- Vampire Weekend perform a cover of the Grateful Dead's 'Peggy-O' for SiriusXMU Sessions, featuring Amber Coffman on additional vocals and Ray Suen on violin
April 5, 2024
Folk songs have long branches and deep roots - today Vampire Weekend have become the sun from the sky granting Peggy-O new spring leaves by making it their own. I am looking forward to the day when a new generation inspired by this version is credited for "Covering The Vampire Weekend song Peggy-O" :)
i've scarcely ever heard a violin player that even stays 100% in tune... but this guy is phenomenal!! best violinist i've ever heard!!
You should check out Tim with Railroad Earth
Tim Carbone
❤ VERY COOL
Probably autotuned
Check out Alex Hargreaves from Billy Strings, one of the best fiddle players out there!
Really cool arrangement! The violin alternating between that cool slide and plucking really made the song.
Need this on Spotify asap ❤
Fuck Spotify
Excellent version. Haunting, weird, and original. Can’t get the beat out of my head.
String cheese shirt ftw
While technically not a Grateful Dead song, it is my favorite tune the Dead would play in concert during their amazing 1977 run of shows. And Vampire Weekend is one of my favorite bands from today. So this is a real treat!
Ah, it was 1977. I remember being at Winterland in 1977, standing darn near at the stage and looking up at Jerry while this song brought me to tears. Thanks for reminding me what year it was.
True it's not their song but they've made this version populat...bob Dylan's is much different and the Irish folk song is also different
Me too! Peggy O during ‘77/78 shows still one of my favs.
The '77 ones are my fave, particularly May 19 in Atlanta, and September 3 in Englishtown, New Jersey.
Nassau 1980 is a cool one, but a little bit faster and bouncier (influence of increased coke-intake I'm told lol).
You don't need to be a Facebook friend when someone gives you a plus on the other side of the world
They got a hold of alan vega drum machine and vw used it for a grateful dead cover song wow thats why i love this band
* guess it would have been martin revs tho
Dylan song
I always kinda figured when Vampire Weekend were growing up they only had Grateful Dead and Paul Simon records to listen to.
Mother of hades this was/is incredible 😮
As we rolled out 💗💗💗 good shit guys, keep up the good work LOL seriously more dead covers from VW highly welcome
Vampire Weekend dig the Dead. Harmony Hall is basically Touch of Grey.
my god you're right
I don't hear that; both great songs but don't hear the connection. In what way?
@@heiferman
Oh man, go back and listen to the guitar solo thingy in Harmony Hall, it's clearly quite Jerry-influenced. Compare to the solo in Touch of Grey.
As a deadhead I approve
Absolutely amazing
This is such a good choice !!
Vampire Weekend: "let's cover a GD song.".....
"Ok...we'll cover it with perfect harmonies and even more perfect plucky violin notes!"
Ezra is a huge GD fan
Amazing thank you so much guys. This just pierced my heart deeply . Oh thank you 😢
So much hate in the comments! This is brilliant in every way! Enlighten yourselves
Yesssss! 💀🌹
Gotta get a hes gone vw version ezra if you see this
Phenomenal version!
This is actually pretty damn good
Love it!!
Absolutely fresh!
That is so good
Absolutely wonderful! 🎶 Kudos for posting this gem! ❤️👍
The acoustics, voices and deep sound are enchanting!
Wow! Great sound great choice and thank you!
Fist time That I heard them play was on Saturday Night Live during the nineties, I sensed they would be around awhile!
Mmm nice cover. I don’t know if this song was originally Grateful Dead, I think it’s a traditional song. I heard it first from Simon & Garfunkel, Wednesday Morning 3AM
It’s a super old Scottish folk song. Many artists have covered it, but GD’s is probably the most well known.
This is a cover of the Joan Baez version of that folk song which was also the version that inspired Jerry to cover it! Lots written about this song since like 1590?? Amazing what we passed down through oral tradition!
Sweet!
Perfection 💨💨🙌
Absolutely my favorite non-Dead cover of peggy-o
Respect from Slovenia.
Nice!!!
Bravo…
Dang that was really good ✌🏻❤️💀
Nice treatment of this lovely folk song. I think I have an old Simon and Garfunkel album where they sing this tune.
Whoa. Amber!
Amber needs to be a full time part of VW going forward
Who is this violin player he’s phenomenal ?
Every brothers vibes
This is art. Well done. Jerry would be smiling.
No he wouldn't I can guarantee that @whitemoubtaingirl maybe out of laughter
Nailed.it. wow.. wow wow
Let's go Mets!
How are Ezra and Amber both almost 40 yet could pass for mid-20’s?
😁😁😁😁🍺
Not a Grateful Dead song but still amazing
It's an old tune, not a "Grateful Dead" cover.
Clearly their intent was that they were covering specifically the Dead version of this traditional tune.
Grateful Dead’s is a cover too.
Yeah isn't this a Simon and Garfunkle song?
@@MasDouca traditional Scottish song sang by Dylan before S&G and the Dead, but the dead reworked it and Dylan later played the Dead’s version
@@denis1717 Cool thanks
who is the girl?
Amber Coffman. (See: Dirty Projectors)
I’m in love
This scares me because I've never really got the GD, but I get this.
EDIT: I understand now, not really GD.
Dead didn’t write this man. Hell of a cover but give credit ya know. Jerry would be frowning haha. Peace and love 🍄
Literally MUCH better than any version than the Dead ever did. So, so well done
Isn’t it great that music is subjective?!
Ehh idk about all that. This is cool, but honestly I prefer the more beat-down, soulful, ramshackle way the Dead did it (especially in their '77 shows, but also the Nassau 1980 one is a fave).
Not even close lol. Lap time duder.
When did music become the Olympics?
What in the actual EFF this blasphemy #wifeofataper #onthebussince89 #imissyoujerry 👑🌹💀⚡💀🌹👑
Appreciate you all got up in front of a crowd and did something, but man, this isn't for me.
Plus this is like 25% of the song
Wonder why Peggy0? I could hear St Steven or the Wheel…
I think they wanted to showcase the duality of having Amber sit in.
Aweful
not bad but very simplistic and just sort of okay. the national did a much better cover. also this sounds more like the Simon and Garfunkel version than the Dead's version, which is also kind of a shame.
Why the nonstop cricket sound in the background? It ruins this completely. SssssSSSSsssss
This isn't a Grateful Dead cover. For chrissakes. It's frigging awful too.
Way to ruin a classic song
i thought it was awesome.....better than some of Jerry's later takes on it.
If there’s no guitar solo it doesn’t count
