  • This video is from a hike up Mt Helen, across a class 3 ridge to Father Dyer Peak, and then over to Crystal Peak and back down. I've hiked Father Dyer and Crystal in the past but from a different ridge. This should not be attempted by anyone unfamiliar with class 3 scrambling and without a helmet!
We started the hike early at the Mohawk Lakes trailhead. We had to climb straight up the very steep eastern slope (there's no trail) and made it just at/below the summit of Mt Helen to watch the sunrise. The first leg of the ridge was easy enough, basically just walking across with the spots of exposure off to the sides. It got a lot more spicy though with areas to climb and descend/reascend when the ridge seemed to cliff out. After the spicy sections it's an easy enough hike up to Father Dyer Peak, and from there getting to Crystal Peak was the easiest part of the day. Crystal Peak is a centennial 13er (one of the highest 13ers in the state) and surrounded by several other centennials too with Quandary Peak (a 14er) not too far away. The last time I hiked these I also tacked on Peak 10, but this time we descended via the trail on the Crystal-Peak 10 saddle down to Upper/Lower Crystal Lake.
