    In 18 years of cabinet making that's the first time i've ever seen a rotating table anywhere. Such a good idea! I can't even tell you how many times I spin a cabinet during it's construction and depending on the type sometimes you have go be very careful spinning it so you don't scratch the thin veneer or edge banding. As i'm sure you are all to familiar with seeing as how you thought this up! Ingenious. I'm going to make one tomorrow.

    Absolutely wonderful. How do you keep ambient dust/debris/dirt out of the open containers on the bench? That's always my problem.

    hi Paul - another inspiring video - It is really amazing to me that not only are you consistently delivering these really inspiring messages, but you have also so cleverly figured out that the best medium to deliver them is through short videos. This is the way people today want and in most cases unknowingly EXPECT to get information. I am sad to say that I will take an instructional video 9 times out of 10 over a written lesson, and with cloud storage it possible to purchase and store virtual library - I guess I am a product of the youtube generation were I am no longer intimidated to attempt most things because i know I will be able to find a video if I get in a jam. Do you have any pics or additional information on how the floor blower down draft table works - I "think" I know but it seems like something I would like to build?

    • @FastCapLLC
      @FastCapLLC  7 років тому

      Thank you for the kind words. I try hard. I'm just a regular guy trying to help as many people as possible. I will make a quick video of how I made the downdraft table so you can understand it. It's very simple, but very effective.

    I’d love to know how you built the bike rack stand. I’ve wanted to build something like that for my rack, but I can’t find something to hold it like you have. What does the rack slide into?

  • @DefensorFortis

    Awesome. Did you make it a massive project, or as part of your 2 second rule, did you do a little bit here and there, or have one time frame a day or week to keep on top of this besides your other household maintenance?

    • @FastCapLLC
      @FastCapLLC  7 років тому +2

      Definitely it was a series of small improvements over the course of many years, but my maintenance guy who often uses the shop was struggling to get it to a hundred percent. I took one week off of work and worked with him side-by-side and we completed every detail. As I reflect on this, it was a huge mistake that I did not take a week off of work sooner because for several years the shop was at 80% and having it at 100% is a massive difference. I lived with it at 80% and it was very functional, but when we got up to 100%, our productivity went through the ceiling. I want to clarify that when I say it's at 100% I don't mean it's perfect and there are no more improvements to be made. I just mean every corner of the shop is an order...there is no clutter or anything undone. There's still plenty of things that can be improved as we work within the shop.

      It's awesome, and I show your videos to my kids as it breaks down all of the lean talk into practical use (they know what gemba and kaizen means, lol), but the "100 mile" rule with a different person showing them its real and it works is very inspiring. And I like the pictures on the storage units so you don't have to memorize what goes where.The hard part is flipping the switch to decide it is important enough to justify the week to go from 80-100% on something that is not related to cost or profit, unless you think of time as a resource as well.Thank you so much.

    Nice woodshop, whenever I move into a larger space I'm stealing the rotating workbench idea. So obvious in retrospect:) Haha, I miss my whole room in bellingham for my lab. Such luxury! Now I'm building it all into a portion of a closet in a San Francisco studio using hanging closet door rails holding vertical boxes with kaizen foam for my tools :) Luckily I can go to the local hackerspace for my big work. I've built two tables, a coffee grinder, and prototyped a mechanism already, with less than a tenth of the space!

    Paul, love your videos! The one thing I would love to see that I have not seen is how you and your team use lean on your computers. I have seen alot of videos about the gemba but I work as a freelancer and my main tool is the computer and various software so some videos showcasing how you apply lean there would be super helpful/inspirational for me. thanks!

      Just had that question earlier this week and this is how one of our IT folks responded, "I think it is challenging to show those improvement in a video because if you don't use the application (e.g., DreamWeaver/Photoshop) you won't really understand the improvement. But I thought of one automation tool that is easy to share. I use TextExpander(textexpander.com/) to automate a lot of keystrokes....saves a ton of time. Even in coding, I keep short keys (called snippets) for code I use often. Also just for phrases, etc. I also use it to keep track of information on every FastCap product."
      I do have some videos. Look at the "Tech Tricks" playlist in my Paul Akers Channel and my FastCap Channel.

    If that's a "really small shop" mine is miniscule... i mean mini micro to the point of almost being non existent compared to yours.
    With your success.. you may have forgot how the rest of us working stiffs live. Then again, maybe you've always been fortunate and to you, that is a small personal shop.
    It is nice... don't get me wrong. But your shop is 4 times or more than what the size of the place i live in..
    No complaints, it is what it is for the moment. But you have shop many work a lifetime and don't have anything close to that size.
    just saying...
