This was an emotional journey to those difficult times. I was Michael’s college contemporary - junior to him. Thru my own older brothers in the army, I knew some - not all, of the facts surrounding Brig Dalvi’s heroic tale of survival. Being US based for many years, have continued to keep in touch with the army’s strong binding traditions. Agree, all files should be declassified, an inquiry conducted, and accountability placed where it belongs.
Tears welled in my eyes as Dalvi Jr was narrating the events. I read his father's book almost 35 years back and all the sad happenings flashed through my mind. As mark of respect to Brig.Dalvi & his men of all ranks, (He has dedicated his book to all the ranks of the army) I think we should buy & read his book along with the related ones, as Dalvi Jr has said.
This is quite informative interview, there are lot of moving pieces. We're a family who've lost our grandfather Lt. Subhash Chander Chanan who's commanding company B of the 2 Rajput Regiment. Col. Rikh who's mentioned by Michael who was later Gen. Rikh was from the 2 Rajputs too. It's appalling how our soldiers were treated, paid the ultimate sacrifice and what breaks the families most is no last rites were performed (lot of them don't know what happened to their loved ones). Will there ever be programme to bring last human preserves of Indian soldiers from Namka Chu
The Himalayan Blunder by Brig. John Dalvi is spine chilling. Our soldiers fought till last breath with less to no resources. Every Indian must go through the book.
I came across this book when I was in class VIII, way back in 1993. It took me weeks to read it, in the end I understood that Nehru, Gen Kaul and V K Krishna Menon were the cause of the shameful defeat.
Great video. Himalayan Blunders is one of the finest books I have ever read. The clarity in writing the events and discipline in sticking to the objectives behind writing is there to see. Apart from the history of the battle, the book is a must read for anyone who wants to understand what is strategic, operational and tactical and what are the implications of taking these decisions at wrong levels. An amazing book indeed by one of the finest commanders! Total respect.
As I am listening to this interview, my blood is boiling with rage at the people in power and at the same time my heart is crying out in pain for the soldiers fighting the unfair war. As a teenager in 80s, we heard of this book as the alternative and real narrative of then Gov't propaganda whose attitude was to sweep it aside & glorify nehru & his team of grandstanding bunch. Sadly this book is still hard to find in whole northeastern India where it happened. I searched all the bookshops of New Delhi and found only two copies. Himalayan Blunder is a fabulous book, it shows the courage and intellect of a great soldier... its good to buy and read. Please do not share it free, it will be an insult to the writer. @P Maitra Also, if at all possible the book should be purchased or at least there should be a possibility of making a nominal donation towards the download. Why freeload off a war hero.
Himalayan Blunders is a book worth reading.. the book rightly is a testament of the bravery of our soldiers. With little supplies, in adequate winter clothing, no time for acclimatisation and insufficient ammunition our men fought valiantly.. one of the most moving parts of the book is when the Rajput company, out of ammunition does a bayonet charge on the enemy as one final assault, laying down their lives. In most of the formations, no one one was left even to write citations of what happened, the extent of damage was only known later when PoWs returned back home... The war was failure of Indian political leadership and hopefully never again we will let our men down!
Very nice and touching conversation with Michael Dalvi who played for Tamilnadu Ranji team. 1962 was a disaster. It is now time for Govt of India to put all archival material relating to 1962 war with China in public domain. It will be some kind of a tribute to all those courageous soldiers and officers who fought and lost their lives in that war.
really insightful interview, and enjoyed listening to a lot of facts put up by the guest...but I have to say your editing is so poor that whenever he is getting to a point of explaining something you just cut it off...and the temptation of the host to intervene every now and then gets annoying after a point....

Hello Ms Jyoti, Request you to pls share pdf version of Himalayan Blunder. I did read Michael Dalvi’s write up on his father’s 100th anniversary. There are many emotions which cannot be well expressed. A grateful nation salutes scarifice of soldiers of 1962 who fought valiantly, knowing very well that they are up against a stronger and better prepared adversary. We are yet to learn all our lessons. In any case, to match China, we shall also have to progress tremendously on economic front. But we should never let the guard down on borders. If need be, we should give a bloody nose to china still in the ongoing standoff at a time and place of our choosing. Trust me, I am not a war mongerer but there come times, when one has no choice but to fight to defend one’s fair rights. We, as a nation, are in one such situation right now.
Eye opening interview and it filled a lot of gaps in knowledge for me. You mentioned that we can get access to the PDF version of the book. How can we get a copy?
My father's was the sparrow of that brigade ,he is mentioned in the book lt . Lakshman Singh, he has also written a book letters from the border and untold stories.
@john doe he was in his office in new Delhi. Soldiers fought 😒 we call ourselves socialist democracy but in reality it's all mediaeval mindset of servitude for family or person. Hypocrisy at its best.
He was doing what he thought was best for Indian interest. Inefficient yes. Self interest no. How can you call someone who braved British lathicharge and prison as self serving 😒 hippocracy at its best.
@@karthikpolasani3038 but there is lot of destruction of history projecting and building perception that only a handful braved British...what in fact done by British was a conspiracy that they left thier legacy in the form of Nehru family
This book and others should be read in conjunction with Maxwell's book. As Mr Michael said, the war we fought was not well planned, poorly prepared and in one of the most vicious political environment. My heart goes with the 7 Infantry Brigade, Commander, Officers and men who were killed/lost. There were inadequate ammunition, rations, clothing and deployments in penny pockets which led to quick defeat. But men stood their ground and fought well beyond our imagination. Brig Dalvi and his men fought like Sikhs of Saragarhi, if I can say so. Long live his legacy. Unfortunately our government didn't even realized that truth should be accepted with humility and remedial measures should have been taken to prevent such blunders. We can say with certainty that Indian Soldiers are the finest and lead by finest officers who are ready to deliver anytime, anywhere, under any circumstances what they are trained for. Jaihind
I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation, and it shed light on so much that one has been wanting to know about the India China war ... especially what led to India engaging in that war. Kudos to u Can you share a copy of the PDF version of “Himalayan blunders” to Sunil.gujral@gmail.com. Thanks & regards.
Himalyan Blunder is a beautifully written book. A very easy read with only necessary military jargon. Every Indian should read to understand the events in 60s and almost nothing, except better equipped army has changed. The behavior of politicians and knee jerk reactions of Indians is a mirrors today's reality
Gripping interview ! Very disturbing to learn how our poorly equipped soldiers fought and were then disowned by the country . Thanks Jyoti for bringing this into the public domain . Please forward the pdf copy to pramalpat@yahoo.com .
Jyoti, was Michael referring to the lady from Perth as the daughter of an officer from Brig Hoshiar Singh’s brigade right and not Brig Hoshiar Singh himself? I have seen a pic of respected Brigadier KIA in a Chinese blog
Why it was ended so abruptly? He was talking about hope....( Of that military personnel's family.) Video was amazing ...but felt really bad for absurdly cutting the video
@simba1 Ironically Nehru and Menon were so stupid that in the lead-up to the war they still allowed most of the supplies that the Chinese needed for the war, to be shipped in through India, via Calcutta port!
I have read Himalayan Blunder and all other books on 1962 Indo-Chinese war.In my opinion most of these books are a means for covering up the incompetence of our senior Army officers and blaming others. The political leadership under Nehru
Dad used to talk of a general who got his chopper shot at (by own troops) near Tezpur. The gen left on the back of a Sherpa from there. I sense it was Kaul. Have downloaded the pdf of The Himalayan Blunder. Thank you

Seems to be a realistic account of what happened in Sino- Indian conflict 1962. Hats off to our officers and jawans.
The interview is very revealing. can you please send me the PDF of the Book The Himalayan Blunder
Nehrus inefficiency, self-interest stands exposed again...and this stands a reconfirmation of that..
Jaihind
Wonder why there are so many edits when this is supposed to be uninterrupted.
Dear Reporter. Please allow guest speakers to complete their comment before intervening.
Wonderful interview
Jyoti, I am surprised you did not mention Gen. Thapar at all in yr covetsation. Why are journalists so kind to a supine Army chief of the 1962 period?
Could you kindly send me a pdf copy of the book.
With kind regards,
Monodeep Chakraborty
I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation, and it shed light on so much that one has been wanting to know about the India China war ... especially what led to India engaging in that war. Kudos to u
Can you share a copy of the PDF version of “Himalayan blunders” to Sunil.gujral@gmail.com. Thanks & regards.
Reminding. Please send me PDF of the book. Shall be obliges

Can I get a copy of the book Himalayan Blunder
Jyoti, was Michael referring to the lady from Perth as the daughter of an officer from Brig Hoshiar Singh’s brigade right and not Brig Hoshiar Singh himself? I have seen a pic of respected Brigadier KIA in a Chinese blog
Why it was ended so abruptly?
He was talking about hope....( Of that military personnel's family.)
Video was amazing ...but felt really bad for absurdly cutting the video
Is there the book available for me to buy
Not key to the content, but still pointing out: it should be John Parashuram Dalvi, not "Parashram"
Please send me a copy of Himalayan blunder.. Book
12:07 - the chinese were also under equipped.
they were also working around in gym shoes - in fact hand sewn shoes.
@simba1 Ironically Nehru and Menon were so stupid that in the lead-up to the war they still allowed most of the supplies that the Chinese needed for the war, to be shipped in through India, via Calcutta port!
Very touching and sad story of a brave soldier. Unfortunate that we had a useless prime minister nehru and poor leadership in Army in 1962.
Please forward pdf of the book.Thanks.
I would like to have a pdf copy of the book. If you can provide, nothing lik eit

I have read Himalayan Blunder and all other books on 1962 Indo-Chinese war.In my opinion most of these books are a means for covering up the incompetence of our senior Army officers and blaming others. The political leadership under Nehru

Political pressures of "not losing an inch of ground" even today create impractical pressures on officers and soldiers on ground.
