Just made my Saturday seen this pop up ... great to see all 3 back ! Get this international muck out of the way and then buckle up ... think we will have the quality to get over the line .... just
Listening to Brendan ,he explained why Khun was not quite right . Illness due to surgery on his mouth, meant he had lost a bit of weight. So as usuall criticism was misplaced, fans at the game get on players backs at the slightest mistake. Us old timers have a bit more patience, we have seen it all before.
Anyone who thought Starfelt was hopeless didn't know what they were talking about. Yeah, he had a mistake in him back and forward but that happens when you play the way Ang wanted. Starfelt was great at moving the ball as quickly as possible, contorting his body to do it. That means the player receiving has more options. Scales and Welsh slow everything down allowing opposition to get back in shape. He was also quick , experienced and his record of never losing a game with CCV was awesome.
Starfelt had a bit of a howler on his debut at Tynecastle and a lot of fans made up their minds there & then and never changed it from that day onwards.
I admire your optimism when you think Khun will ''only get better'' & whatever this means exactly & he's going to get his full opportunity to do so as we fast approach the business end of the season, with a wee visit to Ibrokes in a couple of weeks time & then us hosting them & not forgetting the Cup Semi - Final too & it's ONLY in these type of games that we can see & properly assess is Khun of the ''quality'' that we NEED domestically, never mind at ANY level in Europe, & I just don't see it sadly, but ALWAYS love to be proved wrong in such instances.
36:00 - Jamie Carragher had some interesting insights on this subject a few years ago. He & Gary Neville were discussing if it was easier/harder for a "Local lad" to come through at Liverpool/Man Utd as opposed to some 21yo signed from Spain etc... Carragher gave the example of VVD at Liverpool He was 26yo old when he joined Liverpool He had 16 caps for Holland already The Liverpool fans never saw him play as a raw teenager at Groningen and never saw any mistakes he made They never saw him as a 22yo on his Celtic debut in Europe getting rag dolled away at Shakhtar Karagandy.... He only really appeared in the consciousness of Liverpool fans when he started showing up well for Southampton in the EPL. The flip-side to this is that Jamie Carragher on the other hand, made his Liverpool first team debut at 18yo. So the Liverpool fans saw every single "School boy error" every single misplaced pass etc... that Carragher ever made before he ever became an International defender & CL winner... On the whole Carragher's view was that it was harder to come through at a big club than it is if you're transferred in to that club at a later stage in your career. So I don't think the snobbery that Enda talks about is unique to Celtic fans. I think it's just part of football culture/perception
carl starvelt DID get a bollocking by celtic fans. not just michael stewart. it wasnt until the end of the treble season when people saw the clean sheet record and then never realised what he brought until he went to spain
Starfelt (note correct spelling) is indeed Franco Baresi like when making ANY kind of direct comparisons with the completely awful & on his way out of the door as soon as humanly possible & should never ever have been signed in the first place Lagerbielke, injury prone & near invisible £4.3 million flop Nawrocki & not forgetting steady & honest pro Scales, who got us out of a big centre back hole this season, but of course, is NOT any kind of long term ''answer'' in this regard...
great chat guys, at a reasonable hour living in oz , pity i missed it live, have to divege a little on jjs st j's tactics . the goto plan in the league other than rangers has been a phased retreat to a low block , playing a 5,3,2 or if you think celtic arent that good 4,4,2. apply a press but dont fight the transition and jog not sprint back to a defensive posture . levien opted for virtually zero pressure and a very poorly drilled low block , but the block was in no mans land not high enough to pressure celtics movement in the final third and not low enough to prevent celtic getting in behind . re khun- the arms race between celtics wingers and the rest of the non rangers league kicked up a notch when ange arrived . the leagues solution was to work very hard to neutralise celtic overloads on the flank and lateral runs by either double teaming , or setting blocking patterns . the only winger since angeball and now rodgers that has won that battle , is jota . great to see khuns jotaesq performance , have to wait and see what tactical counter measures the rest of the league take re khun , and whether he wins that battle. stay tuned for zero space for khun , re refs- remember cricket had issues with umpiring many moons ago. you couldnt get an lbw in pakistan for instance, or if you did , there would have to be a stewards enquiry. the solution was neutral umpires . a european zone neutral ref system a good idea .
In general agreement on opposition tactics and how poor St Johnstone block was, but it is within a spectrum, IMO. I disagree on your characterization of relative pressure. It was concentrated within their defensive half, but it was unusually intense for a bottom 6 opponent. For context, they had 247 pressure events with 79% of them within their defensive half. Aberdeen on Feb 3rd had 205 and 60%. Ross County on Jan 27 143 pressures and 73% defensive half. St Johnstone in the Aug 26 game 163 and 78%.
If you want to compare Scales against Starfelt, surely it would be fairer to use his stats only when Scales play with CCV, and not use his figures for the whole season.
In the 90s Scales would have been great beside John Hughes. Not what we should be looking for now. The eye test in my opinion shows that he is too slow, not dominant and wasteful with the ball. P.S. I was never a huge Starfelt fan either, he was terrible when it came to passing and decision making.
Scales is a contender for player of the year and big Starfelt was a great player but both were and are hampered at the back because they had to always do their own job and Taylors job for him because he is useless at defending and can't tackle won't tackle !
Yes indeed, I was never ever ''a huge Starfelt fan either'' but as I've said elsewhere on this thread, if making a direct comparison with the current lot, he's in a different class to them & that ONLY shows just how terrible the current lot are & so with every passing month & the terrible current lot are still with us, Starfelt will ONLY become more Baresi like in the memories of more than just a few & just as Julien did when he was out injured for ages & of course the best one is Jota, who becomes more Messi like with every passing day & how can he NOT be I suppose, when Palma & Khun are now what we're dished up instead?
@@jpj-pl7jx Of course Scales ''is a contender for player of the year'' & how can he not be, since he's basically been the ONLY centre back and/or defender, who hasn't got injured (until now!!) since the start of the season & even more importantly, he has put in overall good, steady performances domestically & in Europe to date & who else is there, who has done that on a sustained & consistent level & I'll give you a wee clue, there isn't anyone!!!!
Contrary to what Enda said, there’s Celtic fans online who praise Scales just because he’s Irish. Let’s also remember Enda said Kuhn would never make it as a Celtic player only a few weeks ago. Doesn’t really fit his point about giving foreign players more leeway.
Yes indeed Wee Enda said ''Kuhn would never make it as a Celtic player'' & I completely agreed with him then & I certainly am still of the same view, indeed I've only ever continually referred to the nine we signed last summer, plus Kuhn in January, for around a huge big whopping TWENTY THREE MILLION POUNDS & ALL on very silly & very erroneous FIVE YEAR deals as ''duds'' & most sadly they've ALL lived down to my overall description as such & is there really ANYONE out there who can see even three or four (absolute maximum) of this TEN actually proving to be of some proper worth in two - three years time because i just can't sadly.....?
If not at left centre back ,I would rather have Scales in his traditional previous position at left back rather than useless Taylor who has been the weakest link in our defence all season both in the league and especially glaringly in Europe ! @@fidelservare5852

Hola, a little off topic, but is anyone collating data on potential SPL transfer targets for Celtic this summer ? And, come on James, are you trying to be provocative with that attire ?
Enda, I love the show and your views, but you are way over the top about your perception on people wanting Scales to fail or that if he was from a different league he'd be viewed differently. Totally clutching at straws. With your logic people would say the same about Idah. The fact is (if Alan's analysis is to be accepted) is that Scales is a Schiachenko level player and us as fans want better. Nothing personal and I'd be astounded if any Celtic fans wanted him to fail. You've taken this too personally, and your allegations are unjustified in my view.
Sorry, but any person, especially a celtic podcast that defends Liam Scales is smoking something. You guys have made a reputation for being analytical. The view on Scales is absolute utter nonsense.
Their view is that Scales is a pretty average defender. Not a world beater by any means but not absolutely dreadful either. In the context of all the CB's who've come & gone in the last 10-15 years he'd be somewhere in the middle of the list of "Best to Worst" In what way is that utter nonsense?
Are Celtic ''good'' again? Not particularly, if at all, but we're still in ''flip a coin'' territory ish as to whether we win the League Title & the £60 million that goes with it & winning the Scottish Cup & the £100 you get for winning that, will be completely NO compensation if the other lot win the League & for those who actually believe that we can still win a League & Cup double, such a feat would be ONLY near totally miraculous & last but not least, if Scales is the answer now & for a few years down the line, then in God's name, what on earth is the question?
You've gone a bit OTT there. None of the panel said Scales was the answer. It'd hardly be "Miraculous" if we won a League & Cup double from the position we find ourselves in. We're (effectively, assuming rangers win their game in hand) 2pts behind in the league with 8 games to go (two of which are against rangers) and we've got a Cup SF versus a very poor Aberdeen side. Winning the League & Cup from this position isn't even in "Tall order" territory nevermind miracle territory. So let's just worry about beating Livingston first of all and save the hyperbolic screeching for all the Facebook aunties.
@@Mantis_Toboggan_MD. It just might sound & look ''a bit OTT there'' & particularly in the context too that we ONLY ever operate in a duopoly & that fact too has also come to our aid, because if we had ANYTHING like a true & proper Aberdeen, Hearts & Hibs, we just might be fighting it out for second in the League (or worse) with one of that little lot, but the fact that they're ALL total crap means we will have THREE games against the other lot to secure a League & Cup double & we just ain't going to win ALL three to get that League & Cup double, hence my ''near totally miraculous'' comments & as ALWAYS, I would just love to be completely wrong in this regard....
