7. Narrowboat internet

- A big job on my list of jobs to do before I could move in was setting up the internet, this is mainly because I work from home and need decent internet, but also because I love streaming movies!
In this video I talk through the items I bought, what's in the boxes, and what connects where. I hope this will be useful for some others looking to set up internet on their boats, and perhaps interesting to those who haven't thought about the possibilities of wireless internet in the home - you don't need a boat to go wireless!
I bought my router and antenna from: www.solwise.co...
The router is a Teltonika RUT240: www.solwise.co...
The antenna is a Poynting A-XPOL-0001: www.solwise.co...
The magnetic mounting pole is a Kuma Magpole which I bought from ebay. These come in different lengths, mine is 450mm long.
The SIM card I chose is from SMARTY, it provides unlimited data (plus a package of calls and text which won't be required) for an introductory price of £16 per month for 12 months then £20 per month subsequently. This is not on contract so I could switch SIM's every month if I wanted! See all Smarty's SIM only deals here: smarty.co.uk/s...

Great vid from someone with a clear voice who isnt trying to sell themselves. Possibly posted genuinly for the benefit of others ( as you tube should be), exactly what i needed to know, thank you very much indeed 😊
Aww thank you so much!! Yes you're right I do try to do videos for the benefit of the viewer - this one particularly, as when I was researching narrowboat internet I had to go to several sources, so this is the video I was looking for for myself but didn't find! Sadly this video is now a bit out of date as both the router and aerial are no longer manufactured, so I don't think the links will work anymore. But both websites offer upgraded versions of the same thing so it's still definitely a useful information video.
Glad you got your internet working 👏. My usual routine is 1. Light the stove. 2. Don’t do anything else until the stove is lit.
Yes, you will be uncomfortably cold this time of year without the stove ticking over. It takes hours to heat a cold boat through. Don’t delay…get it lit !😀😀🔥….and slippers are an absolute essential!👍
Haha I LOVE your routine! Definitely sounds like a good idea 😁
Any brew goes cold before I have a chance to drink it 😂
I'll shop for slippers, thanks!!
Love it, just love it…nothing like a bit of improvisation….well done you.
Aww, that's so kind thank you!!! 😊
Good informative video, people always ask about Internet so now I will send them in your direction 😉
Aww thank you! That would be great!
Really useful video! Thank you ☺️ I just subscribed. I recently bought my first boat and look forward to following your journey ☮️💟⚓️
That's great, congratulations!! Thanks for joining me, and I wish you all the best in your first boat!
@@narrowboatnoob thank you 😊 maybe bump into you on the cut sometime when I’ve got to grips with the boat! ☮️
@@KayakDreadgirl that would be super cool 😁
I'm new in a 60ft boat on the Oxford canal, so far it's money money money to get everything sorted as I like, how do you feel 1 year on?
Brilliant you did it... Great use of that box.. 😁
Haha thank you! I'm thinking I'll find more uses for it still 😁
OK so this is two years old... Fair enough, but frankly even then I would have wanted kit that could manage 4G and now definitely 4G and 5G (both). 3G is being turned off now.
Superb choice of the Teltonika, but there is another router out now which is a few hundred pounds cheaper than their 5G one. Worth looking at GL x3000 . It's got everything the Teltonika has, but not the pro stuff which we don't need.
Nice to see a woman doing tech reviews for a change and nice choices for two years back.
Thanks for your comment! Yeah great point about 4G and 5G, I'd definitely go for that if doing it again. I still have the router but may need to upgrade in my area soon - knowing Shropshire though, we'll probably be the last to get switched off! 😅
It's lovely of you to mention doing tech reviews as a woman - I agree, there's not enough of it!
LAN = Local Area Network (PC) , WAN = Wide Area Network ( Internet - e.g. when using a telephone line ADSL Modem)👍
Thanks!
I wondered how wifi works on a boat. Is the signal from satellite or towers? Just curious. Glad it's working for you.
Wear slippers! I live on a lower floor of a building with a cement slab under the flooring so I'm always wearing slippers, even in summer. Makes a big difference.
Good question! It is possible to get internet via satellites but I'm not sure how that system works, I just know it's expensive! My system is much more common amongst boaters and gets the internet from towers.
Haha yes slippers are a good idea! I have also lived in a house with solid concrete floors, yikes it was cold! Rugs were everywhere 😁
When you start continuous cruising it might be worth taking a look at Starlink.
Ah will look that up, thanks for the tip!
How much was the Aerial? Just got a TP link MR200 router for my boat just looking into a aerials now 🤗🤗
It was around £90, you can get cheaper, but I didn't want to risk it!
Hi.
May I ask which internet provider you are using and what are your download and upload speeds?
Thanks.
Hello! I'm using a Smarty SIM. Speeds vary enormously but I'll do a speed test when I put the pc on later and get back to you. I do stream video and play online gaming fine, but uploading to UA-cam takes FOREVER!
Despite it being an omnidirectional antenna I'd say direction is still important! The signal drops out in hot sun or bad rain/wind. Not great for the UK changeable weather, sigh.
Right, this morning's speed test is as follows:
Latency - 106ms
Download - 9.8mbps
Upload - 1.1mbps
Not too shabby!
Hey narrowboat noob, just wondering are you going to be a continuous cruiser or are you at a marina? I want to continuously cruise and if you were doing it wondered what job do you do that you support it with?
Hello! At the moment I am in a marina, mainly because I have no idea what I'm doing and need the support! Also because I love this area and my parents live close by. But next year I will certainly be considering continuous cruising. It may not be possible as I do need that near constant internet connection really, and reliable power for the laptop! However, I work remotely doing administration for the civil service, so theoretically I can work from anywhere in the UK. Definitely a sector that's worth looking into if you want to work remotely. I currently work full time so fitting the cruising into the evenings during winter may not be much fun or safe! I'd likely try and book a winter mooring and cruise during the summer.
