i don't think Toyota knew how people were going to view this SUV when they first redesign it back in late 2013. but ever since this car came out i see alot of families driving the Highlander, and 3 of them live in our neighborhood. if your looking for a vehicle for a family of 4. a husband, wife, and two kids, but you don't wanna spend money on a Van, then i say get this.
only the limited-platinum has the panoramic sunroof. you can do an entertainment system - and then you have two separate moonroofs. the limited has chilled front seats. the platinum has heated seats in the 2nd row as well.
Dave, Hi. For several years I've been watching and generally like your reviews. I would like to see you include headlight performance in future reviews. down-the-road light output, low & high beam performance, do the headlights blind oncoming drivers, etc. This is so important for vehicle safety. Maybe 60 seconds of each video for the headlights. Thanks
Lol I know this is 2020 now but my mom just bought one of these yesterday 2017 Toyota Highlander SE blizzard pearl, honestly would recommend best car ever!!!
This car is really nice and would be even nicer if they made a performance version of it. Toyota out shined on this design. If i owned this is would remove the third row. I dont even care if the seats fold i still would want it gone.
This is my 5th or 6th Toyota/Lexus loan in the past 2 months. I'm very happy to say that my audience will be seeing more from Toyota and Lexus for a while :-)
Good day! You have some really great videos. I have a request for a video and/or perhaps more detail in future videos. Or perhaps a recommendation. Please be patient while I try to explain what I am looking for. Currently, I am in the market to buy a new vehicle which I plan on keeping long term. I am leaning towards a Honda Pilot, however, I have to travel in order to test drive anything but chev products. Even still, the in-town choices are limited, so, I have turned to the internet to help narrow the choices. Although videos have been helpful, pretty much all of them are lacking the kind of information I need to narrow my choices. Basically, I do ALOT of small scale home renovations, landscaping projects and short impromptu road trips with occasional camping & light off-roading. Most of this is just me and my dog. Being a mature female in average shape, my upper body strength is not great so I am looking to avoid hauling things that are strapped to the roof. I prefer to just chuck things in the back. Having videos showing seats that fold down and a rear window that opens to allow for transportation of longer pieces of wood and other gear/supplies would be helpful. And a demonstration of the seats that fold down for a decent impromptu camp out (hard shell camping). Most of the videos state cargo size in volume rather than providing a clear visual with common supplies and/or people/gear. I've seen videos with seats down but without at least a 2x4x6 (or 8/10/12) piece of wood for clarity, those shots are almost useless. I am hoping to see more of that but with common building supplies or sports gear (bikes/skis/paddle board). So, I guess I am asking for a very visual cargo space comparison video. Should that not be of interest to you, I would appreciate a recommendation. Please note, I have larger building supply orders delivered. I could buy a truck with a canopy but it seems like too much vehicle for the scale of my projects and camping. I used to own an older Chev Blazer 4X4 4-door which I loved in every way EXCEPT gas mileage. I currently own a Toyota Corolla which is good on gas and reliable but does not suit my lifestyle. Thanks for your time and attention but mostly for the most through videos I have watched thus far. Cheers!
Highlander is crushing the redesigned Pilot's heart in its hand in the sales race. People not digging a swole CRV The leather here does look cheap and cheezy.
Nissan TitanWarrior: ah what are you talking, and what people do you know don't like the CRV. i wouldn't buy it, but i don't have a need for it so the sales numbers debunk your theory my friend. but the Highlander doesn't compete with the Honda CRV, that would be the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX5, Nissan Rogue, Ford Escape, and Hyundai Tuscan just to name a few. your right about the Pilot though, because it does compete with that. but your also leaving out the Chevy Traverse, Nissan Pathfinder, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Mazda CX9, and the Hyundai Santa Fe. and the leather looks fine, plus this just the SE trim levels. usually the SE comes standard with cloth seats like the LE does, but i think he has an upgraded tech package on this one. so that could explain the seats. if you want better leather as opposed to sporty leather, then you'll want to look at the XLE.
Hope you can give us an ideal of how good it would be in bad weather. Also I hope the stop start thing can be turned off. When I want the car I'm driving to be turned off,I will turn it off myself.
Why in the world would they cut us option to have SE trim without captain's chairs? Highlander isn't big as Explorer or Durango for that to make sense. Toyota killing people who are trying to find "sporty" looking SUV and still have practicality of a mini-van (or almost practicality of a mini-van).
I wonder if they will change anything for the '18 year model. I love Toyota, never been stranded, but the chevy traverse just seems like the styling and packaging are a lot better
djclown7pb I went with the explorer, not as reliable but prob the second most reliable in it's segment and it's safe, and it looks great and mine gets 35 mpg on the highway with a 6 speed, not bad.
Puff the Magic Dragon the styling of the ford is kind of nice, But the infotainment kinda sucks, and those eco boost engines are just a bomb waiting to explode. Not only that but I just don't want to drive a cop car around, it's like driving a crown Vic, my old explorer was a work horse but wasn't reliable, and I'm Glad I sold it but feel bad for the person I sold it to because a lot of things broke like the year after selling it...
Too bad Toyota doesn't put more performance into the Highlander. A nice design as is, would be better with over 300 hp and a sportier suspension and handling. Of course Toyota's outdated infotainment system needs a serious upgrade.
it's got 290 hp, that's more than enough for a family of 4. and the infotainment system is fine, it's designed to be simple and stress free for kids. get a girlfriend/wife and a daughter like me and maybe one day you'll understand, but until then keep your mouth shut.
J High, the only one's in this segment that offers high performance trims is the Explorer Sport and the Durango SRT. If Toyota did offer a performance setup it would be a tiny portion of sales.
Very comfortable vehicle, but man is the Highlander a snooze mobile. Wife has one and its just too soft and cushy for me. Point A to B transportation and that's it. If you don't enjoy driving this is your SUV.
David Nacson not really, not the same price, not the same reliability, not the same resale value, gas mileage , can't fit 8 in a Durango, doesn't have the same safety features that comes stock, etc , but I bet it's more fun to drive.
Dark Raven Jr is right. You could take it off road, but ground clearance is minimal and besides, the Highlander is designed for those who want to who have kids and they have to bring their friends as well. It’s for the Soccer Moms and Dads.
The highlander (as cool as it is) will not do well off road, not even if pulled by a Land Cruiser or a 4Runner!. IDK why Toyota refuses to put a locking differential on it!
There is a locking differential on it and the gc is over 8 inches, not land cruiser for sure but that s more than most in its category, but yea it s not really made for that, just light off roading, but that s why they sell the 4runner...
Cx 9 is worst, try them, but the HL is not good for sure for the 3rd row for adults for long rides, perfectly good for kids though, which is I believe who it was intended for
i don't think Toyota knew how people were going to view this SUV when they first redesign it back in late 2013. but ever since this car came out i see alot of families driving the Highlander, and 3 of them live in our neighborhood. if your looking for a vehicle for a family of 4. a husband, wife, and two kids, but you don't wanna spend money on a Van, then i say get this.
I usually don't notice things like this, but your speaking audio is VERY clear and easy to understand. Bravo.
only the limited-platinum has the panoramic sunroof. you can do an entertainment system - and then you have two separate moonroofs. the limited has chilled front seats. the platinum has heated seats in the 2nd row as well.
even it looks dated. i really like the simple center dash

Love it. And i absolutely love that color. So beautiful!!!
Love the highlander Toyota has stepped its game a lot
Congrats on getting Toyota back after all that time, no one tests a Toyota in snow and ice like you do! ;-)
Lol I know this is 2020 now but my mom just bought one of these yesterday 2017 Toyota Highlander SE blizzard pearl, honestly would recommend best car ever!!!
Was it a 8 speed transmission??
highlander is really killin it in terms of design
im getting jeep grand cherokee vibes
From it’s headlights and silhouette you can tell this was a direct shot at the GMC Acadia, Chevrolet traverse and Ford Explorer market share
This car is really nice and would be even nicer if they made a performance version of it. Toyota out shined on this design. If i owned this is would remove the third row. I dont even care if the seats fold i still would want it gone.
Hey Dave, has Toyota reinstated your press car privileges? Or did you go through other means? Hopefully this means they're lending to you again.
This is my 5th or 6th Toyota/Lexus loan in the past 2 months. I'm very happy to say that my audience will be seeing more from Toyota and Lexus for a while :-)
Cool!
Great review 👍
Btw Dave I'm glad your getting Toyotas again. Just don't "scratch" this one k
Thank you.
Excellent Review. 👍 Best MIDSIZE SUV in USA. Just bought one last month from SunTOYOTA. Great Dealership.
What year
Always nice to see the cheap hood stand, fine on a FORD not a Toyota of this level
Helpful review!
7:42 Ahahahah your beer cans bouncing around man!
Lol
2018 Highlander vs 2018 Pilot
francob911 Highlander
francob911 Pilot
Highlander
Pilot of course!
Highlander
Looking forward to see the new Subaru Ascent!
Would never own another Subaru
Dave, when are you getting the Outlander PHEV to review?

What did you get?

The leather looks well made, what are you talking about.
Highlander is better design than the yellow school Bus? yup!
Honda Pilot the best SUV under 45k
Pilot is too expensive for what it is.
They need to update the remote fob. It looks like it's from the 90s.
yes because we spend so much time looking at it.
The wheels look likes aftermarket doesnt look like OEM..
is there a major difference in the LE Plus & SE 2017 Highlander?
The front looks like a Range Rover
Has a valer look to it.
Does anyone get the 4 cylinder version of this very heavy CUV? I can't see anyone getting that version.
Hope you can give us an ideal of how good it would be in bad weather. Also I hope the stop start thing can be turned off. When I want the car I'm driving to be turned off,I will turn it off myself.
With good tires its really good in bad weather, but there is a button to turn off the SS but you gotta do it everytime you start the car
That's good info to know. Thanks!
you can get a qx60 for the price
They have like 10k difference both new
And I believe the QX60 has a CVT.
I love Toyota, never been stranded, but the chevy traverse just seems like the styling and packaging are a lot better
true but the Chevy traverse anit as reliable nor comfortable as the Toyota Highlander
djclown7pb I went with the explorer, not as reliable but prob the second most reliable in it's segment and it's safe, and it looks great and mine gets 35 mpg on the highway with a 6 speed, not bad.
randomrazr True but the rest of the car is great. I think the interior being a little lackluster is a result of it being a model introduced in 2011.
Puff the Magic Dragon the styling of the ford is kind of nice, But the infotainment kinda sucks, and those eco boost engines are just a bomb waiting to explode. Not only that but I just don't want to drive a cop car around, it's like driving a crown Vic, my old explorer was a work horse but wasn't reliable, and I'm
Glad I sold it but feel bad for the person I sold it to because a lot of things broke like the year after selling it...
randomrazr found on road dead
Does the se have a v6
Too bad Toyota doesn't put more performance into the Highlander. A nice design as is, would be better with over 300 hp and a sportier suspension and handling. Of course Toyota's outdated infotainment system needs a serious upgrade.
The Highlander has 295 hp and a sport trim, that's good enough for this car. What more could you want?
TRD package?
it's got 290 hp, that's more than enough for a family of 4. and the infotainment system is fine, it's designed to be simple and stress free for kids. get a girlfriend/wife and a daughter like me and maybe one day you'll understand, but until then keep your mouth shut.
J High lol

The fake stitching and leather design look nice but still the car is all hard plastic
Chris Frank how? All of the dash is soft touch.
Leather is real...only the 3rd row is leather like, his camera is not that good though..
I wish my cherokee came with a toyota or honda 3.5 😐
useful.
Dude, were you a cheerleader?
plz do toyota prado 2018
Very comfortable vehicle, but man is the Highlander a snooze mobile. Wife has one and its just too soft and cushy for me. Point A to B transportation and that's it. If you don't enjoy driving this is your SUV.
Highlanders are one of the funnest cars to drive, i test drived the 2014 highlander and it was a blast
randomrazr The suspension tuning is too soft. Slow steering and after driving it there is nothing memorable about.
Oh thats funny what year was it
Agreed, I could easily fall asleep after a long day of work lol
This or Durango?
jaime Durango
HL on a buy, Durango on a lease, but then again, in Canada, they re about 9k apart so not exaclty the same
Ben B The Durango literally blows the Highlander out of the water.
David Nacson not really, not the same price, not the same reliability, not the same resale value, gas mileage , can't fit 8 in a Durango, doesn't have the same safety features that comes stock, etc , but I bet it's more fun to drive.
Take it off road
it's not designed for that
Dark Raven Jr is right. You could take it off road, but ground clearance is minimal and besides, the Highlander is designed for those who want to who have kids and they have to bring their friends as well. It’s for the Soccer Moms and Dads.
Billy Sou he took a cx3 off road and it has less clearance
The highlander (as cool as it is) will not do well off road, not even if pulled by a Land Cruiser or a 4Runner!. IDK why Toyota refuses to put a locking differential on it!
There is a locking differential on it and the gc is over 8 inches, not land cruiser for sure but that s more than most in its category, but yea it s not really made for that, just light off roading, but that s why they sell the 4runner...
Want!
just 44 grand
3rd row is worst in class
Cx 9 is worst, try them, but the HL is not good for sure for the 3rd row for adults for long rides, perfectly good for kids though, which is I believe who it was intended for
The 2020 Highlander by comparison, is hideous
Talking too fast
I'll slow down next time.
Wow, this may be the least informative and/or opinionated review of a cat I’ve ever seen
super bad mpg
This thing drives like a SCHOOL BUS I kid you not. So bulky and super dated design back to 1980.
Zam zam I think you commented on the wrong video. Perhaps you meant to post this comment on the "all new" and redesigned 2019 Pathfinder??
Kind of has a Range Rover look
