Nice overview of Red Sonya/Sonja's publishing career. Interesting how a one-off character from REH has become her own cottage industry. Simone's Red Sonja sounds like quite a far cry from Frank Thorne's version.
I'll be interested in knowing if Dr. Jenny's excursion into Red Sonja's world is similar or very different from her encounters with the Spur western series.
I had no idea this was coming out, I'll have to give it a look. Gail's a fantastic writer, and she's very conscious of issues in how women are portrayed in popular media (she coined the term fridging) so I'd wholly expect her to handle a Red Sonja novel thoughtfully without losing what makes the character fun
It has to be said in defense of the chain mail bikini, and it's perceived lack of actual bodily protection, that she was introduced as a guest star in Conan who didn't wear armour at all most of the time, apart from a helmet... sometimes. One does rather hope the scale mail (not chain mail in most of the comics) was at least lined!
'I Come to Praise the Bikini not to Bury it.' such a great title for a biography, maybe Jane Fonda or Carrie Fisher, not sure either would necessarily agree with the sentiment.
'Red Sonja Consumed' sounds interesting, I don't read enough comics & graphic novels, I really should. No more drunken weeping into beards, we're not off to a good start... I'll have to weep on my own. I think I might be with Dr Jenny on this one, bikinis in boys own adventures... You have me curious, but maybe not enough... Weird. The latest issue of BACK ISSUE features an article on Marvel Graphic novels...One of them...MARADA THE SHE-WOLF by greats CHRIS CLAREMONT and JOHN BOLTON began life as a Red Sonja story.
