And the boys of the NYPD choir were singing Galway Bay - an ode to Fairytale of New York.

- The Pogues were one of the greatest Irish groups of all time. And, in ‘Fairytale of New York’, they produced a classic that captured the hearts and minds of countless people all over the world. It is widely considered to be the greatest Christmas song of all time.
In the chorus, Shane MacGowan has a standout lyric on which most listeners join in: “…the boys of the NYPD choir were singing Galway Bay…”. While people all over the world belt out that line, very few realise there has never been an NYPD choir, so none have ever sang Galway Bay…
Until now.
As champions of Irish emigrants the world over, EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum wanted to bring this famed line to life, and celebrate the song ‘Galway Bay’, another timeless Irish classic, penned by Irish emigrant, Arthur Colahan, as a tribute to his homeland.
Last month, we assembled a handful of retired NYPD officers, who together with a local amateur choir, lent their voices to the beloved ‘Galway Bay’ in a Brooklyn recording studio.
The result, we hope you’ll agree is a breathtaking rendition of ‘Galway Bay’, which will be shared with and reach the Irish around the world, wherever they might be spending Christmas this year.
Shane MacGowan, RIP.
This was just what I needed after hearing the sad news this morning. May Shane have rested in heaven an hour before the devil knew he was dead.
"An Irishman's Philosophy
There are only two things to worry about:
Either you are well or you are sick.
If you are sick,
Then there are only two things to worry about:
Either you will get well or you will die.
If you get well,
Then there are only two things to worry about:
Either you will go to heaven or hell.
If you go to heaven, there is nothing to worry about.
But if you go to hell,
You'll be so damn busy shaking hands with friends
You won't have time to worry!"
He would have fallen into Heaven.
😂
Well done boys, what a tribute to one of our own,I am sobbing as I post this, unbelievable!
My lovely dad would sing this to me. I love going to Ireland 🇮🇪 nicest people in the 🌎 ❤❤❤❤❤

Very moving rendition...of Galway Bay....EPIC!
What an amazing Tribute for🖤Shane&Kristy♡Fairytale of New York...🕯R.I.P🖤
Yesssss
It was written about the Irish Something like “ Those who God made mad all their wars were merry and all their songs were sad “ God bless all ! A wonderful people
For the great Gaels of Ireland
Are the men that God made mad,
For all their wars are merry,
And all their songs are sad.
(From the poem “The ballad of the white horse”, by GK Chesterton)
Well done boys sang lovely.I am so proud to be Irish.Tina Ireland.
Fantástico!!!! 👏👏👏🇮🇪🍀🇪🇸
Beautiful harmonies. Beautiful singing. 🎶🇮🇪🎶💚🎶🇮🇪🎶
Beautiful! RIP Shane 🌹💚 We played this at my Dad's funeral 💚😇💚
Fantastic and so beautiful. Well done all...❤☘️
Stupendous arrangement and performance by NYPD Choir.
Well done and thank you for doing this. Fair play to you.
Wonderful 👏👏👏👏
Love This💚
So beautiful, thank you.
Absolutely Love it 💖 Fröhliche Weihnachten from Germany Boys!
FUN FACT. I heard an Irish accent for the first time ever in real life the other day and instantly I was in Harrison Ford's clear and present danger with terrorists all around.
They left out two verses. Too controversial, I guess. A cowardly rendition, not a very good tribute but a mockery I would say.
For the breezes blowing o'er the seas from Ireland
Are perfum'd by the heather as they blow
And the women in the uplands diggin' praties
Speak a language that the strangers do not know.
Oh, the strangers came and tried to teach their way
They scorn'd us just for being what we are
But they might as well go chasing after moon beams
Or light a penny candle from a star.
In the heart of the city, where the lights gleam bright,
A tale unfolds each Christmas night,
The Pogues once sang, in an Irish sway,
A Fairytale of New York, in a timeless play.
"And the boys of the NYPD choir were singing,"
A lyric embraced, the joy it was bringing,
In Galway Bay's echo, a tribute profound,
A melody spun, a connection unbound.
Shane MacGowan's voice, now a whispered song,
In memory, he lingers, forever strong,
Through cobblestone streets and city lights aglow,
A legend lives on in the falling snow.
From the emerald isle to the streets of New York,
A bridge of music, a love to uncork,
In every chorus, in every refrain,
A spirit dances, unbridled, unchained.
In a Brooklyn studio, a choir takes flight,
Retired officers, hearts alight,
They sing of Galway Bay, a distant shore,
An homage to Irish roots, forevermore.
EPIC Museum's vision, a gift to share,
A rendition of Galway Bay, rising in the air,
For the Irish, scattered, a global embrace,
A Christmas connection, transcending time and space.
Shane MacGowan, rest in peace, your legacy lives,
In the lyrics sung, the joy it gives,
Fairytale of New York, an anthem so grand,
Echoing through the years, across the land.
If you wrote this I just wanted to say how beautiful it is and so well done and very touching. ❤
It sure is all as described above. Brought a few tears to my eyes. This redheaded Erin can feel the music & lyrics in my bones. I wish my Irish heritage was so unknown, but I feel it there in so many ways.
❤ Thankyou for Sharing,
I live in Australia my Nanna was from Carrickfergus , my brother, and family are in New York for Xmas and we are both huge Pogues fans.
This poem and ode to Fairy tale in New York are perfect.
What a lovely thing you did!
Just frigging brilliant.
Thank you for sharing it with us.
And a Happy a new Year to all!
And Shane: if I am very fortunate, perhaps I will meet you on the other side of that black river between the dead and the living.
Perhaps we could sing a song or two.
Lovely tribute, very well done. Thank you for sharing
It was a pleasure to help put this together and direct the video. Shout out to the NYPD officers who were game, The Crickets, Bridge Studio, The Public House, and EPIC.
Thank you, agus go raibh mille maith agaibh
Tá failte romha. Bhí sé go leor spraoi
Jeez that was fab, well done lads 👏 May ye have a wonderful Christmas 🇮🇪☘️
Why does this song touch me so much that I cry? I'm fucking Norwegian!
And I'm Norwegian-American! There's something about Irish music. I guess that's why our ancestors invaded the place, lol.
Danish man here, take a boat south and I'll give you a shoulder to cry on. Danskere og Nordmænd er brødre!
@@Swenthorian Danish man here. It's true, us "former" vikings share a great kinship with our Celtic brothers. Not by blood necessarily, but we share a common historical distaste for Englishmen.
Just kidding, I love you Brits😉
It's an ode to Shane McGowan. That he died so recently is why this song makes me cry. Listen to his song "Christmas in New York". A great karaoke duet song.
The NYP got there in the end. Beautiful rendition ☘️
Thank you Irish Immigration Museum. I'm an Irish Immigrant living in Australia and the NYPD choir was the most beautiful rendition I've heard in a long time. Certainly brought tears to my eyes.
Thanks again. God Bless you all at NYPD and Happy Christmas 🇮🇪💚🎅❤🇦🇺🤶🦘
My Dad use to sing this, when I was young. This beautiful version took me back to those days.
The visuals and audio are perfection. Gentlemen, this is how to do justice to this song!
Well done, wished they did all the lyrics: If you ever go across the sea to Ireland
Then maybe at the closing of your day
You will sit and watch the moon rise over Claddagh
And see the sun go down on Galway Bay
Just to hear again the ripple of the trout stream
The women in the meadows making hay
And to sit beside a turf fire in the cabin
And watch the barefoot gossoons at their play
left out ---
For the breezes blowing over the seas from Ireland
Are perfumed by the heather as they blow
And the women in the uplands diggin' prates
Speak a language that the strangers do not know
For the strangers came and tried to teach us their way
They scorned us just for being what we are
But they might as well go chasing after moonbeams
Or light a penny candle from a star --
And if there is going to be a life hereafter
And faith I am sure there's going to be
I will ask my God to let me make my heaven
In that dear land across the Irish sea
My great-great grandmother, Julia Mullen, was born in Galway on Christmas Day 1850
Shane closed his eyes for the last time before he reached another Christmas. I'm sure he never realised how iconic his song would become when he and The Pogues first sang it. The Fairytale (an NYPD Choir) came through. Even the imagery reminds me of that other Christmas classic, It's a Wonderful Life. Did he get a chance to see this, I wonder?
Hi i was with him basically every day for the last good while and remember hearing about it but hadnt seen it. Im weeping here seeing it first time. God bless him and rest him
@@briansea8324..thanks for telling this..

Thank you from a member of the Irish Diaspora in Australia.
Reminds me of and brings back lovely memories of my grandparents, I was left the music box with the tune of Galway Bay and as kids we took turns to wind the little jewellery box up to play this tune before bedtime when we stayed with them ❤
hello annemarie, I am in Ireland now, we do not forget you, we never forget you, we think of you all the time, think of that song 'the fields of athenry', yours Erin go Bragh

Just beautifully done!!! ❤❤❤.
Well done lads. The Irish including some from my family had a tough start in most of the countries they immigrated to. But they succeeded and today we in the Emerald Isle are proud of our diaspora. ☘️☘️☘️
Absolutely performed. So sad about Shane.😢
how beautiful, the Irish know how to make a melancholy tune, i'm born into Celtic heritage so really appreciate this ❤
Tears from a stone😢lovely but lonely🥲for millions .. the stranger came and tried to teach us their way. They scorned at us for being what we are But they might as well go chasing after moonbeams or light a penny candle from a star…..❤
What is the meaning of "chasing after moonbeams and light a candle from a star"?
@@manfaifung4351 well u can’t do either .. so trying to teach us THEIR way was a total waste of time.. the stranger was the English …
Oh, I see. The strangers' job was to rule over the place. Thanks so much. 2:45 e@@maureenmartin4730
Beautiful. Made me long for summer holidays spent in Ireland as a child.... precious memories
RIP Kristy and Shane
Absolutely blown away by this. So sweet. RIP Shane.
So beautiful. Thank you very much. 💗
Absolutely beautiful. Impressive. Brought a few tears to my eyes!
Just for asking, why they were'nt recorded in front of the Washington Arch? That would have been a better tribute to the video of "Fairytale..."
Y'all ever think that maybe.our boy Shane was making a wild juxtaposition?
Very impressive guys, I think Shane McGowan would be very proud.
Outstanding. Great job, boys.
Thank you for posting it! They sang the heck out of it
Absolut empfehlenswert, Daumen hoch.
An absolutely beautiful rendition of this timeless classic. Amazing tribute to a wonderful singer-songwriter...poet extraordinaire. RIP Shane and God Bless!!!!. 🙏☘💚🇮🇪

How fantasti that this, happed,. More please, how about the Galway shawl.Great Job boys.
I sang this song with my parish choir (St. Vincent Basilica Latrobe PA) years ago for the retirement of a former pastor. I had to translate that "praties " means potatoes.
Well played, lads!

What a beautiful rendition of Galway bay, fair play nypd, unreal song, listening to it and imagining it in my head, from Ireland
❤
I wonder if Shane McGowan was able to see this, or hear it, before he died. What a moving tribute.
This is freakin awesome. I love this and it is such a fitting tribute.
A very nice tribute to Shane!
Absolutely fab makes me proud to be Irish
That has to put a smile on Shane's face, and Kirsty's too, as they dance together in another place to that magnificent melody of Fairytale of New York. What a brilliant idea, and hat's off to the Irish Emigration Museum and the NYPD boys who participated. A great tribute.
I Love this Voices. Wonderful.
Thank you,
from Bavaria.
I'm filling up watching this in the uk. I'm sure Shane would be impressed. My grandfather was from Charlestown, Co Mayo so I feel a connection. Also I have relatives in America.

"The NYPD doesn't have a choir" so why did you put that big banner there then?
