Excellent video. Of course, I expect nothing less….what an excellent workout doing all the kata back to back is. As one of my karate mentors likes to say regarding the practice of kata:“first, motion study, then, FULL POWER”. Or, as I now say, “one for show, and one for GO!”;). Thank you again for all you share with us.
One for show and one for go is the best way to sum up the difference! Truly we are lucky to receive your wisdom in our comment section, Mark! You share so much with us
You are very welcome! Hopefully having all the kata in one place (finally!) will help students see them as a thematic whole, and help everyone on their journey 🙏🏻
@@GojuRyuKarateCentre perhaps it was worth to make two or three parts. Or film on various days and then add in one. Unless the editor told you to keep kata-ing because she has other things to do. :)
Thanks so much Sensei! Being new to Goju Ryu, this gave me a good overview and a lot of appreciation for the discipline that goes into the skill set. Much appreciated!
Ah, I'm so happy this is a great overview for you! Goju Ryu has great depth, and takes a long time to get to the bottom of the ocean (or top of the mountain) but we are so glad you found this video as a foothold in your journey. Wishing you an amazing training year in 2025!
Thank you! As a Tani-ha Shito-ryu practitioner, it is interesting to see the small differences between your style and ours. The katas were much more similar than I expected. Strangely, the kata that differed most was Sanchin, which we consider the most basic of the Naha-te katas. (We practice Shuri-te katas as well.)
It's always so nice to hear from our friends in other styles! The differences and their applications make karate so interesting, and should be a source of discussion, rather than division! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment 🤗 wishing you a splendid year of training in 2025 🥋
Such a beautiful message to receive! Thank you for your kind words, and we wish you abundant light and incredible training in 2025! Thank you for your support of our channel 🤗🤗
It is the best kata for developing those legs! I'm such an average kicker, Seiyunchin should be my favourite kata, but I fear I lack the gravitas for it! (Side rant: I wish they would stop using it in Cobra Kai with actors that have NO understanding of karate. This is such a beautiful and weighty kata.)
Kiai is younger than the word karate. It was something used to build team spirit at schools and universities. And has evolved into sporting shouts today. Our dojo only have children kiai (application is a bite, and we show the bite).
Love the video, so far. But as soon as Jaeger, Sensei mentioned the “ bouncing phone”, an idea occurred to me ( one I’m sure you’ve thought of already, yourselves;). That idea is to sow a pocket inside a gi or two , to hold the phone ( or whatever) specifically for these videos. Just a thought. You could even make a pockets that closes/seals ( for less bouncing;)- Anyway- back to the video, and thank you for it in advance! Take care!
For tokui-gata, mine would be shisochin perhaps as I'm a pacifist and there are no fists (sorry for the pun) or seiken-zuki, to be more precise. And when I'm lazy for kicking due to my knees, then seiyunchin is good still to work on legs. But every kata has its own flavour so jedem das seine. :)
Ah, I've never thought of Shisochin that way, but it's so true! Also, it's a little bit flashy and dynamic, and I don't have the gravitas to pull off the other Goju kata lol 🤣
When I saw the thumbnail, I was expecting a little bit of a different type of video. For example I practise Shorin Ryu and we have some 20+ Kata, but the 3 most important ones for Shorin Ryu are Naihanchi, Passai and Kusanku. I was expecting a similar video here... 😅 BTW: We also have Geki Sai Dia Ichi, but we call it Kihon Kata San and as we do Shorin Ryu we do the technique differently too. But basically the same Kata.
Haha, luckily we have a smaller kata syllabus! It's hard enough to get through our 12 main kata (plus a couple of supplementary ones) in a lifetime. We definitely share overlap between our styles, and Geki crops up in a bunch of them. Always great to hear from our karate cousins in Shorin-Ryu 🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️
Hello, master my name is blessed I olso do karate , I follow you in youtube the vidéo on Katas and It is excellent what you do I would like you to make us even more vodeos on learning Katas , explain to us and teach us step by step sol would like to learn more katas of different style and I love it and I 'am passionate about it .
Can you give me some advice I know white and yellow belt kata I am a yellow belt after just starting on October 1st this year so in 2 months training November 16th was grading I'm wondering if I should start training for green belt kata
Great question! I always believe that it's important to have a solid understanding of the kata before moving on to the next one. But, the sooner you start working on the next one, the more time you have to seek feedback and to improve it. So with guidance from your Sensei, it helps to look at where you are heading next.
So we don't have audible breathing in most of our kata, but we know some styles have hot/cold breathing, and that ffft ffft breathing too. Hope this helps!
Because it preserved a lot of joint-lock and grappling techniques. But on a contrarary, Goju-ryu strategy is more agressive (pressing to a close combat) and brutal in applications (see for e.g. sepai where one literally grabs an oponent, lifts him and smacks to the ground).

Thanks for the edits Sensei Zoë
Any time! I didn't have the time to do more detailed edits, but we also do have a bunch of videos for every Kata, at least 🤗
What a wonderful catalog! Arigato!
Sanchin dai-ni is missing (running to duck). :)

Great katas sensei, thankyou for sharing. My favorite kata would be Seiunchin.

My worst is the hadeda kiai - some competitors sound like birds falling out of trees!

...how has this idea not occurred to us in 4 and a half years of video production?
We will definitely look into it! I'd love one of those Rhode wireless mics, but they are eye-wateringly expensive 😢

Are you breading when you punch?
So we don't have audible breathing in most of our kata, but we know some styles have hot/cold breathing, and that ffft ffft breathing too. Hope this helps!
Sensei is there any specific reason why we only came forward while finishing the kata geki Sai dai ichi.. regards
To finish embusen in a spot where it started. The rest explanations are just rubbish. :)
The other explanation I've heard is because its an aggressive, wartime kata, but your explanation makes more sense!
Why Gojuryu seems to be more defensive and less offensive?
Because it preserved a lot of joint-lock and grappling techniques. But on a contrarary, Goju-ryu strategy is more agressive (pressing to a close combat) and brutal in applications (see for e.g. sepai where one literally grabs an oponent, lifts him and smacks to the ground).
Couldn't have answered better myself 👏
@Burvedys puts it best! It looks defensive, but that's only because the kata starts with a 'block', which is just an attack disguised as a block lol
@@GojuRyuKarateCentre yes, it starts with a pistol shot but in self-defence, of course. 😂
