Sadly, most people have never heard this performance, and instead only have heard the version used in “Ghost” [the studio/record]…if you listen to that version, you will quickly notice how vastly superior and different this live performance is. So much more power and vocal coloring/agility. One of the greatest live vocal performances in TV history.
Not only does no one do it better...no one's even come close...he hits over 20 seperate notes in this performance...hits them effortlessly...not many can replicate that range
i will never ever understand how a human can sings this song...the notes he hits and the effortless breathing...as i understand this was performed live, and his mother was in the audience... it just stuns me to understand how a person can sing this flawless under so much pressure...
It was the studio version you heard in Ghost which is a great version, but if you listen to this alongside the studio version you'd probably agree with me that this live version is near perfection. Near a 1000 other singers have done their version of Unchained Melody, but I can't imagine any of them equaling or bettering Bobby Hatfield's masterpiece.
To be fair, though, Elvis Presley performed it on his last album, "Moody Blue", before his death in 1977 and put his all into it. A very worthy contender.
The night he performed this song, his mom and dad were in attendance. He sang his heart out and you can imagine how proud he made them here. Amazing live performance!
They have used this song in movies. Bobby Hatfields version to me..is the Absolute Best!!! His range & control is out of this world!!! No auto tune & Live!! He was just amazing & made it look so Easy! Bill Medley & Bobby Hatfield are the Righteous Brothers. They had solos they did...
Bobby hit 23 NOTES when he sang this. He hit SIX different octave levels when he sang this live on Andy Williams. i remember watching this on tv and i was blown away then and still do now.
The greatest love song EVER. I grew up during this era and the girls would just MELT everytime the late great Bobby Hatfield sang it. He hit 24 different notes singing this song. He sang this live on the Andy Williams show in 1965 and many still consider it the greatest live performance ever
The absolute control Bobby Hatfield has over both his tenor(chest) voice and falsetto(head) voice, and how he can blend them into a seamless several octave range is amazing. A talent for the ages.
I saw a comment somewhere that during rehearsal Bobby and the orchestra leader noticed how great the acoustics were in the studio and they worked together on some changes to take advantage of it.
The gentleman’s name is Bobby Hatfield, sadly he is no longer with us. I saw Bobby at the old Academy of Music in 14th St in NYC back in the day. His vocals were pure and powerful, he could have blown the roof off of the theatre that night with his voice and performance.
His beautiful sound was known in the 60's as "blue-eyed soul". His voice draws out emotions now, almost 60 years later, as much as it did then. Your reaction is priceless!!!
“The Righteous Brothers” are considered by most to be the Greatest Male Vocal Duet Of All Time. I agree. Between Bill Medley’s Lows and Bobby Hatfield’s Highs they can hit every note on an 73 key piano. No other male singers can do that. Legendary. “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’’ was the most played song on radio in the 20th Century "Unchained Melody" - Bobby Hatfield Live 1965 Andy Williams Show (with his mother sitting right behind him) Considered by most as The Greatest Live Male Vocal Performance In History... I agree. Bobby’s use of “Runs” is masterful. He created the style and set the table that all others have fed off of for decades. 7 notes just to say the word “I” is melodic brilliance. Their name came from doing a show near a marine base in So Calif and a black marine said to them…. You two guys are Righteous Brothers. In 1983, in Newport Beach O.C. Calif. Bill and Bobby at the Jolly Roger Restaurant . I was 13 feet away for... "Unchained Melody"- "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" - "Soul And Inspiration".... They were perfect, awesome, amazing, incredible......
I heard this song as a child, I'm 67. The righteous were called the blue eye soul brothers.years past, it was used in the movie ghost. But it first came out in the 60s or the late 50s. My favor Righteous Brothers is, Just once in my life, please don't confuse it with, For once in my life. Both great songs. Everyone Smile.
How times have changed. This song did not go over favorably with the Woodstock generation in the 60's however it seems to be an extremely emotional song judging from the reaction I've seen from different cultures.
CAN YOU BELIEVE A PERFORMANCE LIKE THIS FROM BOBBY HATFIELD BACK IN 1965. THIS IS WHAT WE NOW CALL "X-FACTOR PLUS" MANY SINGERS HAVE SUNG THIS SONG INCL ELVIS , DIAMOND, HUMPERDINCK, BUT BOBBY REALLY DID SING IT THE BEST. HE OWNES THIS SONG
In the movie Ghost it was a recording, us old folks that hear it on the Andy Williams show in the 60's it was pure and clear, better than a recording in a movie, it they were played in the same room you could tell the difference, no autotune,in the 60,I think auto tune came into play in 1998
He got help from the NBC orchestra, because he was under pressure. His mama was in the audience. Don't you embarrasse me. He lived to sing another day.
Just a man and his voice. No autotunes, fillers or accompaniment. This song has always been considered one of the great vocals of all-time. One of the great sultry love songs. A song to get things going if u know what I mean. Thanks for doing this reaction. I know that u appreciate it.
@@jnagarya519 Just so you understand... the orchestra wasn't even required except to color it up for the audience. Bobby Hatfield's vocal performance would have been just as beautiful without it. He could sing this song in the shower. Not sure WTF your point is, but it just demonstrates your complete inability to appreciate what you just watched.
Pure talent, good looks and unmitigated soul was Bobby Hatfield. He never disappoints and ALWAYS delivers us a perfect PUNCH. This performance was when he was 25 in 1965 and better than the studio cut which charted twice no doubt thanks to Ghost. Check him out solo with My Prayer.
You heard the studio version in the movie Ghost. So its very likely you were listening to this live version for the very first time. It is the best version by Bobby or anyone else for that matter. In my opinion.
1000% Better than the studio version that they played on Ghost, this was done Live in front of a studio audience that included Bobby's mother and sister.
years ago this song came into my head and i couldnt remember who sang it and i couldnt get it out of my head all week and it was driving me nuts until it came on the radio and i thought finally i am going to find out who the singer was and at the end of the song the announcer said that was unchained melody sung by bobby hatfield who died on this day back in 2003 spooky moment right there
Thanks for the shout-out. It would have been nice to hear your reaction to the performance; this is one of the most iconic performances in music history. This is Bobby Hatfield's song- I think virtually everyone agrees that nobody does this song better. He knew he aced the song at the end, when he smiles.
Probably the greatest live performance of a song in television history, hands down ! Bobby Hatfield was only 25 when he performed this song. Blue eyed soul baby ! First time I've seen you, your really cool and cute as hell young lady. Have a great day, ☮️ 💕
Although you knew the song, your reaction to the video was genuine and it's great to see all generations enjoy this brilliance as I can appreciate all generations of music from any time and all genres. Cheers!
I saw them live in 1965 in San Diego with the love of my life, Sharon. They were classy and it was an incredible show. There were some Black folks there too who I think thought they were Black. Everyone there loved these guys...everybody. Great reaction.
The title comes from the fact that this was the theme song of the 1955 prison movie "UNCHAINED", where a prisoner approaching the end of his sentence ponders whether or not his love has waited for him. I believe The Platters recorded it for the movie.
In the movie it was an old black guy sitting on a cot and the guy was thinking about going over the fence. This was played alot on million Dollar afternoon movies on tv in NYC in the 50's
I assume that was the first time by the Righteous Bros. and that's ok .. almost everyone I know has heard that song.. You had to have talent to sing back then ..no auto tune, no re-takes, no gimmicks .. just pure God given talent ..best version ever ..Bobby owned this song
I sang this to my wife at our wedding in 1983. She, however she said I murdered it. I'm guessing it's not a song for a baritone, she told me I was of better sticking to my drumming. I thought it was an appropriate song as I was in the Royal Marine Commandos, I had returned from the war for the Falkland Islands when I proposed, and now was shipping out to Sierra Leone two days later, so much for my attempt at being romantic. On the upside she liked me in my Dress Uniform, and having my comrades forming the sword tunnel helped. I must have done something write because we're still together. With 4 children and 7 grandchildren, we got busy on baby's when I was home. I served my Queen and Country for 38 years as a Royal Marine Commandos and Specialist Forces, and the last 2 years in hospital, and she stuck by me even though I'm wheelchair bound now. We do actually have a song by Queen called "Your Me Best Friend", a very apt song as she has been my best friend since we were both 15.
What reaction?????? She didnt say a single thing about this performance, likely the greatest in live TV History! If you cant find a positive thing to say about that performance, you are in the wrong job!
Good music lightens your mood, Great music makes you fall in love or breaks your heart, It lifts your soul or crushes it. The difference between a catchy tune and a great composition... 😉
It doesn't matter any time I see this song being played for a girl, it immediately "melts them"... Never fails... I'm a white guy and I played this song for my Iranian girlfriend and just like every other girl she was completely love struck by the song. LOL 😉
No one and I do mean no one done this song any better than Mr Bobby Hatfield
No one was even close
Affirmative
Correct in spades!
Sam Cooke is really good too
Absolutely 100% correct
Sadly, most people have never heard this performance, and instead only have heard the version used in “Ghost” [the studio/record]…if you listen to that version, you will quickly notice how vastly superior and different this live performance is. I agree totally.
Agree 100%. Bobby is just magnificent in this performance. IMO the orchestral accompaniment is superior to the studio version, also.
Absolutely damn right!
Nailed it!
Absofragginposilutively!!
However you never heard it like this live version there will never be another blue eyed soul like Bobby who now sings amongst the Angels.
I haven't heard anyone do this song any better than Bobby Hatfield. He was the very very best.
Not only does no one do it better...no one's even come close...he hits over 20 seperate notes in this performance...hits them effortlessly...not many can replicate that range

That's why I call it
Bobby's Song."
@@dawnaberry8452 So do I, Dawna.
"Bobby Hatfield" Live TV 1965 the Andy Williams Verity Show. No Auto-Tune, his parents were sitting in the audience.
Keep in mind Bobby Hatfield for the righteous Brothers singing unchained Melody this was actually live
That ending. Wow. Incredible. Absolutely incredible.
He was amazing ! He worked and practiced hard to get his voice to that place !
The night he performed this song, his mom and dad were in attendance. He sang his heart out and you can imagine how proud he made them here. Amazing live performance!

Well now you saw him sing it live with no gimmicks, raw talent.
Blue eyed soul…
Bobby hit 23 NOTES when he sang this. He hit SIX different octave levels when he sang this live on Andy Williams. i remember watching this on tv and i was blown away then and still do now.
This came out a long, long time before the movie "ghost".
We all knew that at the time and tried to just be happy for the extra income for Bobby Hatfield.
The greatest love song EVER. I grew up during this era and the girls would just MELT everytime the late great Bobby Hatfield sang it. He hit 24 different notes singing this song. He sang this live on the Andy Williams show in 1965 and many still consider it the greatest live performance ever
I watched it with my mother when I was ten years old.
Live on the Andy Williams show. No autotune and his parents were in the audience.
What's even more incredible that this was a live performance.
Never got tired of playing this live show
The absolute control Bobby Hatfield has over both his tenor(chest) voice and falsetto(head) voice, and how he can blend them into a seamless several octave range is amazing. A talent for the ages.
Pure, raw talent, singing live without auto tune or studio enhancements….We still love you Bobby Hatfield!
Again live no voice over no auto tune no lip syncing !! Raw talent
One of the most beautiful songs ever.
In my opinion this performance was perfection. Other's since have tried to with this song. But only Bobby hit it on the head with perfection...
I mean your not wrong but I feel The King's rendition was perfect in its own way too
This one one take. No auto tune. No fillers. And his mom was in attendance for this and he was extremely nervous. But this is music at it's finest.
The best version by far ever, nobody did it better including Elvis.
Best live vocals ever...easily
I believe this was a one-take - "here's the mike, bobby. Sing" Amazing to this day!
1965. No autotune, no sophisticated audio filters, no cut & splice from multiple takes. Just live, one-take, pure, raw talent.
His voice was a gift 🎁 from God.
Absolutely!😀
Nah, he practiced and worked on it. He could not sing like that till he was inspired by earthly things and then worked his butt off to get that great.
He had a natural tan, prominent features and was gorgeous. The voice of an Angel.
The orchestra was killin it too.
I saw a comment somewhere that during rehearsal Bobby and the orchestra leader noticed how great the acoustics were in the studio and they worked together on some changes to take advantage of it.
Andy William's Orchestra was superb...as befits such a great singer.
@@ChicagoDB You know it! Lots of great musicians behind the scenes like The Wrecking Crew for instance.
That song has been covered 670 times ,,,,,nobody has done it like Bobby Hatfield . Righteous Brothers in R and R . Hall of Fame ..
I am a HUGE Elvis fan and this is the only cover I believe Elvis couldn't top. This is just too PERFECT!
The gentleman’s name is Bobby Hatfield, sadly he is no longer with us. I saw Bobby at the old Academy of Music in 14th St in NYC back in the day. His vocals were pure and powerful, he could have blown the roof off of the theatre that night with his voice and performance.
I get chills listening to this.
Bobby Hatfield was 24 years old when he sang this.
TWENTY. FOUR. YEARS. OLD.
RIP Bobby Hatfield 1940-2003.
Wow !! This is Live , this is Talent , Magic !!
The one and only BOBBY HATFIELD!! Iconic song

We use to call this "BLUE EYED SOUL." Bobby Hatfield was 25 years old in this video. It was 1965. Bobby is in the ROCK hall of fame.
Here he sings it the way it was meant to be
He got help from the NBC orchestra, because he was under pressure. His mama was in the audience. Don't you embarrasse me. He lived to sing another day.
The background music was taped.
His parents were in the audience and he wanted it perfect for them. I remember watching this at the time live on TV.

It's actually from the movie, "Unchained", hence the name. It was used, many years later, in "Ghost".
You can hear it many times and it still sounds new
It’s really a pity that most people have only heard his version used in Ghost…this is far superior.
He's got The bluest eyes
This isn't from "Ghost" -"Ghost" used a recording of the same song by the same singer.
