Great tutorial. I would however suggest to use the rototool (for a bit more advanced follow up) for the finger instead of the second more precise track...
You could do that if it works for your shot. But remember, you already have the main track data available to create your finger already. That might offer more flexibility if your finger has a lot of motion blur or doesn't key easily with the rototool.
Hola. gracias!! gracias!! no me animaba a aprender algo más y necesitaba usar Mocha para algunos efectos de A.Ef. y acá encontré una gran explicación para aprender. Gracias!! Saludos de Argentina. Carlos
It's basically the same. You'll have to do the process twice. At the end you will have multiple layers though; the original, the TV insert, the phone insert, and any foreground objects in front of the phone.
You are welcome! Thanks for watching all the way through. If you want to learn more about Mocha, we have a full free training series called Mocha Essentials. You can probably skip to Exercise 03 after watching this one : borisfx.com/free-training/mocha-essentials/
I followed the first minute of your tutorial. My precomp with my picture in it is even the same size/dimensions as my normal comp, and after I followed your steps, my picture looks squished.
Does it looked squished in the precomp? If not, it should! Right-click on the layer in the AE timeline, then go to Transform > Fit to Comp. It should look a bit goofy, but when you go back into your main comp it will look correct.
Do the same as with the single finger. Cut out any objects that aren't coplanar. If the fingers are just sat on the screen, but aren't moving, you may use those as part of the track, if they are co-planar with the screen.
This comment is for mocha pro, I always think what if mocha can provide us with the facility to track using different planner trackers within the same layer independent of each other just like we track in Syntheyes or PFTrack. I mean to say we need to have full control over each shape in a layer which is being used for a co-planner track, Like its duration, deactivation at the time of any occlusion and manual keyframing along with parametric animation like when should a particular shape become the part of the entire track and when it should isolate itself just to provide enough tracking data to get a solid track. I hope I'm not as vague as I consider myself lol. But I can create a demonstration video about what I think needs to be the part of mocha pro.
Hi, great tutorial, thanks for that. Now, I'm having a problem when I export and apply the tracked data to a layer (the screen footage), it doesn't stay exactly in the place of the screen, it runs in such a way that it is outside the composition. I have followed all the steps! what can it be?
Thanks for the comment. I think you're running into mistake #6 from this video : borisfx.com/videos/top-6-mocha-ae-problems-common-track-data-mistakes/ Is your insert layer *exactly* the same size as your background layer/composition? If not, it will do exactly this. Simply pre-compose the insert layer and rescale it so that it fits to the edges, and your track data will work as you expect.
@@BorisFXco I keep having this same issue and my layers are the same size. I precomposed and tried with the image being the same size itself. Nothing works, my video ends up being tracked at the bottom right of the screen :( I've tried with different projects too, I can never get it to work..
My first thought is that the image you're trying to insert is a lot smaller than the main image. This would cause a lot of softness because of the upscaling. If it's not that, then please join us on the Discord or forums to show your setup. forum.borisfx.com/ and www.borisfxdiscord.com/
The edges of the shape are used for tracking and masking. The corner pin/Insert will be a straight-lined quad. To round the edges, use Apply Matte in the plugin parameters back in After Effects.
If you're using the plugin and After Effects 2023 or above, Mocha will automatically paste the separated X and Y positions onto a layer, if you have the dimensions separated in After Effects. If you needed X or Y on its own, you can take them from there. Does that help? If not, what are you trying to do with the data afterwards? Maybe I can help with that.
Hi, Random but i do videos with narration and wanted to know how did you get your audio like that? i have a shure mv7 and cant get the dead silence and crispness you have in this video
Sorry for the late reply. Room treatment is the biggest "secret" to this. There was quite a lot of work that went in to the choice and positioning of different audio absorbers, diffusers and even mic placement. A lot of this you can probably cheat with Crumplepop now though! crumplepop.com/ A bit of light EchoRemove and AudioDenoise goes a long way!
can you help me understand how to make adjustments once ive saved the tracking.. for example I want o change my screen shape as its bait off but after going back into mocha doing the change and then saving im stuck on how to make it change in after effects? I apply the export again but it makes the screen replacement go a funny shape and shrink? thanks
Absolutely. The problem here is probably that you didn't clear the corner pin effect that was applied the first time around. Now you have two corner pins making the screen go all strange. Always delete the old corner pin effect and hit the Create Track Data button again after making adjustments. You can find other quick tips to solve problems like these here : borisfx.com/videos/top-6-mocha-ae-problems-common-track-data-mistakes/ This isn't the most easy to find video so I like to link it whenever I can! @@BorisFXco amazing thanks for the reply, i actually worked this out in the end. Ill still watch the lesson. Im interested in paying to learn as i want to improve. I have another question if you could help me out.. ive put so many hours in trying to get this right as its an important project and i dont want it to look amateur.. i wish i could send you a video but ill do my best to explain here . So ive tracked my screen, added an planer shape (rectangle) to the screen and added my pre comp to the tracking data.. all good… my issue is making it fit better and selling the effect.. ive tried using key light to take the green from the original content but the issue with this is for that to work the pre comp needs to be under the keylight (original clip) to be seen… but for the screen to show up with my tracking i was told the pre comp should sit ‘ontop’ of my original(tracked) clip… So the im struggling to get the key light way to work.. So i looked into how can i manually change the shape of the screen thats shown in the finial composition.. this bit is where i get lost.. so the blue planar is also the area that will show my precomp image/video.. but what if i want to cut a shape like the design of the phone to sell the effect? I was told i could ‘’mask it’ but thats vague and im not sure of the process.. so ive tried converting the trackdata to an AE mask so i could play with the shape but it makes everything go black on my screen except the phone im ‘add’ mode.. so i click ‘subtract’ and then the image returns but the phone screen disappears! Im really stuck on how i can get my video clip to sit neatly inside the phone rather than a over the top shape… can you help me understand the tools and process .. thanks

This did not work at all. I am trying to fit a 9x16 video into a phone screen video and when I do all the steps including the pre comp, it just layers the pre comp all distorted, it does not fit within the bounds of the phone at all.
Make sure when you precomp, that your precomp is the same size as the original clip (16:9). im rounding my edges but then when i go to insert clip and choose "grid 16x16" your grid doesnt the edges as rounded. how do you fix this?
