Headlight Replacement G6 - How To Replace A Headlamp Bulb on 2009 Pontiac G6 - DIY
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 жов 2024
- In this video, I am going to demonstrate how to replace a front #headlight bulb on a 2009 Pontiac #G6 car. Headlights used to be an easy job, but with so many makes and models, cars have become difficult to work on. This vehicle used an H11 amzn.to/427lDmx
The headlight bulb cost me $19 at O'Reilly's Auto Parts and took about 20 minutes to change. The only thing I would add to the other video is to apply painter's or masking tape around the edge of the bumper cover where it meets the headlight assembly to prevent chipping or scratching the paint.

8 years later and this video helped yet another! Thank you! I didn't even notice all those plugs lining the front.
I have a 2008 G6 and you are a life safer along with $90 bucks a hour at the dealer. Followed your instruction and it worked great.Thank you.
If your hands are small enough to get between the light and front of the car, you can replace the bulb without removing the whole assembly. I managed to do this, and it saved me big time, and without the hassle of trying to wrestle with the headlight. Whoever the engineer was that designed this, needs to be fired.
Preston Miller My Civic was easy just like this as well 😎
Did you put your hand right behind the assembly
_Whoever the engineer was that designed this, needs to be fired_
Is my daily mantra.
I've serviced various equipment for 30 years.
Nonsense engineering occurs in every industry.Obviously the engineers have never had to service it.
$$$ Make a seemingly simple job so complicated for Joe Public that he has to take it in,Its a friggin headlight replacement, save a few bucks in assembly costs.
The 366th day failure on a one year warranty business model.
Heh If things were engineered,to last forever I'd be unemployed.
The trick is the tape. It makes that tight fit slippery so the headlight assembly slips right behind the bumper. I'm a 67yo woman on a pension and this saved me money by doing it myself. Thanks a million for this!
Always test the repair before reassembly. Turn on the light first.
fuckinfried68 Good advice!
Just replaced my low beam bulb this morning. Your video sure did help. I used painter's tape like you showed, popped the assembly out, and with a little twist the whole assembly came right out. I replaced the low beam with a Sylvania instead of the Phillips bulb. I noticed the Sylvania was a little thicker, so I ended taking one of the rubber washers off and it went in just fine. Job done in about 20 mins. Thank You ! Great Post!!
I just completed this job for the second time... I found the trick to getting the light assembly to pop out easily is to apply most of your force to the outer and lower edges and it sort of lifts out. part of the difficulty is that the weather stripping may be adhered to the body work over time and not want to let go at first. good luck everyone... it's much easier the second time!
I have never changed a headlight before today, thank you! Now I’m not scared to drive to work in the morning !
You did good with the video I have been asking for someone to fix my headlight for week's and nobody (my husband) would help me so I watched your video and 20 minutes later I don't have to pray for no cops going by me at night because I fixed it myself. thank you for taking the time to do this
You're welcome...I'm glad the video helped.
Great video! I looked at the placement of that bulb and figured I was heading to the dealer. Found your video and had the new bulb installed about 30 minutes later and that includes the trip to the store. Great call on the tape to protect the paint. It's my kids car and he would have had a fit if the paint got damaged. Thanks!
I replaced lights today and with this video I was able to do it just fine. thank you for making this.
Thank you so very much for the advice on how to change out the low beam bulb on my Wife's Pontiac G-6. The last time I tried to change bulb on opposite side I gave up because of the bumper not allowing me to remove headlight assembly. My Wife took vehicle to dealer and paid over $100.00 to have one damn bulb replaced. Dealer said wiring harness to bulb was melted and also needed replacement? You showed me how easy it is to loosen top of bumper. I'm embarrassed that I couldn't figure this out on my own. Good Man!
Michael Kavchok I'm glad you found the video useful. Thanks for watching.
Thank you! Worked like a charm (took the advice from the commenter to check the light before putting it all back together). Took about 30 minutes, start to finish, including a couple of breaks to review the video.
great video! Got to do this on my wife's car today. Whoever came up with that headlight design should be destined to hell and have to change Pontiac headlights all day every day! :)
Keith Ledbetter and this is why I am considering replacing my headlights with LED lights.
GM was top heavy with engineers trying to justify their existence and the result was monstrosities such as this. Another was using the inside door latch to turn off the interior lights. The Japanese continued to use the time-honored pushbutton in the door jamb design that works 99.9% of the time. GM deserved to go out of business and NOT be bailed out. The fact that it was bailed out is a slap in the face to every taxpayer and disgruntled GM car owner.
Worked like a charm. Also, when pulling the light housing out, it helps to lift the light housing up nearest the center of the vehicle (bright headlight side) to clear the fascia (grill) after you've pulled the housing clip out near the fender well. That housing will lift straight up.
The dealer quoted me 70 bux to change the low beam headlight in my G6!!!!after watching your video,I got'er done in like 15 min.s. thank you so much for sharing this video!
You're Welcome...I am glad the video helped you!
Thanks for a video. Took me just over 5 mins to replace the bulb after watching this.
Thanks, bud. 4 years later, and I just now used this video on my 2010 G6.
You're welcome!
Thank you! Saved me an hour and a half estimated service time and $35. Super fast and easy :)
Wasn't gonna do it. Was afraid to do it. Watched the video and knocked it out in ten minutes. Thank you.
Thanks for the video! The hardest part of doing anything with these headlights is getting them in and out of the body. If you watch how he puts it back in and just reverse it, that's the easiest way to take it out. Replaced the headlight plug using this and another video without a problem.
Zack ONeill You're welcome, thanks for watching!
Glad it help and for letting us know about taking one of the rubber washers off. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video. I have a 2010 Pontiac G6 but it worked just the same. My car manual had some instructions and it mentioned removing those 6 plugs with a screwdriver but it didn't say anything about removing the two screws on the light fixture with a 7mm ratchet. That worked perfectly.
***** I'm glad it helped you…thanks for watching!
Thanks for uploading this. I just changed my headlights on a g6 09 and it took me 30mins tops. To buy all the bulbs i needed was like $30 total. You saved me from going to an auto body shop
Useful video. Thanks. It SHOWS clearly what my manual describes poorly. I changed the bulbs on both sides. On one side I didn't bother to take out the clip on the side that holds the assembly in, as it is kind of a pain to deal with. I just loosened the assembly enough to get at the bulb and that worked, although it is easier to deal with the bulb if the whole assembly does come out.
I agree, everything is much easier after you've done it once. Thanks for leaving your advice!
Very good video! I had about 98% of this figured out in my head. I wanted to make sure there were no hidden fasteners before I started pulling. Thank you!
You're welcome!
I'm really glad I found this video. It was much more helpful than the owner's manual. It was helpful to see how much muscle was needed. I would have been afraid to pull on the light casing and fascia if I had just read the manual.
sarah schuerch Thanks for watching…I am glad the video helped!
Your how-to video clarified what I couldn't figure out from the owner's manual. Thank you!
I am glad the video helped. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for making a realistic and extremely helpful video!
I had both headlights go out on me, so I didn't have time to set an appointment with the dealer. And if I just read the manual without seeing the amount of effort needed, I probably would have quit out of frustration or fear of breaking something. Folks, if I can do this, anyone can. I highly recommend this video to anyone.
Mark's little sweetie pie here--- I changed it very easily this time!!! And please use the extra advise from ramrom340x------- lift from the bottom of the headlight!!! It made the head light come right out.
Everythinth that you said after that (cause ramrod340x did not give instruction after getting the headlight out) is great! My headlight is working, and wonderfully!!!!
But don't forget the pulling from the under side of the light to get it out!
it was a little difficult to get it back in, but you gotta get the front part in, then gently and specifically, get that clip in the (wheel well area) back in.
Thank you for your instruction!!!! I did this in the dark with a flashlight in my mouth, ad it was simple, because of the advice of the 2 of you!!!
Watched your video prior to attempting this for the 1st time myself, and it worked very well; not at all complicated. Thank you.
I just want to say thank you for showing me how to change headlight. My daughter and I went to O'Rielys for her front headlight was burnt out. The guy working said he would change it for us. She bought the bulb I got in car and after putting up hood my daughter got in car. We were watching him unscrew a few bolts. (I wanted to see how he did it so being a single mother I like to be taught new things on vehicles so I can do it myself next time) he put the 2 bolts that he just took off right back on and put hood back down. My daughter and I just looked at each other and thought ???. He then handed her back her new bulb she bought n told her he couldn't do it cuz she had to take off the front bumper in order to put new bulb in. I said what? I've never heard of that before. But figured he knew what he said and cuz he worked at ORieleys that he knew what he was telling us as being true. Now I just watched ur video and have learned from you the correct way to change bulb. But I'm kinda mad that the guy told us he couldn't do it cuz front bumper had to come off. I some times think the guys who work there tell women the wrong answers cuz they think we're not worth knowing the truth. Or if we aren't a blond with big boobs that they are trying to impress not that my daughter can't catch a mans eye cuz she can she's beautiful. But for him to say to me the bumper needs to be taken off was pure bull____ if u ask me. I just wanted to tell u thank you for not letting me take bumper off when it didn't need to be taken off.
That is true with most vehicles, now.
Great instructions! FYI, I used a 9/32" socket wrench and it worked just fine.
Thank you for posting this!! I actually got my headlight changed in 30 minutes. 👍👍👍
to any body that does this at home or repair shop be careful because the headlight and/or bumper on one side may make the bumper look crooked or the headlight.
also, DIY How To Paint A Car School thank you for your videos they helped me out on my cars... so keep making them please.
pontiac G6 Thanks
I appreciate this video. I've a Pontiac G6, and I changed my left headlight today. This video came in good handy because I didn't know "how to" to the job. THANKS!
i just finished my G6... thanx for the help.. this video saved me quite a bit of money and was super helpful, im not the handy type, but this was easy.. i replaced both headlights
Thank you. Done in 10-15 minutes. Now the State Troopers can leave me alone.
Glad it helped. Thanks for watching.
Thankyou the video and tips I just orderd the H11 bulb from Amazon for then G6. Great job and detailed! I subscribed. 👍👍👍👍👍 2023
Thanks man! Took me ten minutes....should have followed suit with the painters tape...doh!
thank you 9 years late and it helped another
Hahahah me too just ordered the H11 bulb. How did it go?
Easy peasy @@JohnPiperBoots
Thank you Mr. Smith. This worked exactly as you stated on my 2008 G6 GT hardtop convertible. I also saw your clear coat permanent headlights remedy and did that as well. Much appreciation from San Diego!
Can you tell me where this video is? The “clear coat permanent headlights remedy” one. I was told I really need to replace the whole headlight housing assembly because the reason the bulbs burn out SO QUICKLY is because moisture gets in.
Thanks! This just what I needed. Changed the bulb with no issues.
Wow, this video probably saved me an hour. I was able to replace it in less than five minutes
I'm glad it helped...thanks for watching.
Took me an hour to do but I have long nails and I'm not strong 😩
Old video, I know. But just what I needed. Thank you.
Thank you for showing this video. I have a 09 Pontiac..same color. I just realized my dim light is out. Now I know how to change it. Great video!
This helped me so much! I saved 60 dollars when avoiding the dealership. Thank you so much!
Dro God You're welcome, I am glad the video helped you.
Cool that I found this, especially since my '09 G6 last owner lost the manual. I watched this video as I worked on the car, it helped. Thanks for posting, man!
And your awesome cause you saved me money that I was able to waste on beer and Tacos!! Thank you, Again!
Sean Chapmam lol…you're welcome. Glad I helped you have beer and taco money!
Thanks for making a woman like me feel powerful and for saving me money. I did it OMG
This one worked for me. I replaced the bumper shell on the car after my wife and winter one day, never painted it so don't have to worry about that. I did find a broken piece of plastic that I had no clue as to what it was and figured it bounced into the skid plastic down the road somewhere, now realizing it is the twist cover to the lights....
Thanks bro, now I'll be safer in this foggy WA winter
thanks you DIY!! very useful video. saved a bunch of money. i was ready to take the car to the mechanic. didn't know how to do it myself. thanks again!!
This is the first car I've owned where I've had to take out the entire headlight assembly. Super annoying.
Regardless thank you for this, really helped me out.
Thanks so much for posting this video. i would not have been able to replace my headlight without it. Your tip about the paint tape was also helpful. My headlight was a little more stubborn than yours and scraped the front piece when pulling it out.
Have a GREAT Day!
I am glad you found the video useful. The are harder to replace than many other cars. Thanks for watching. You may find these other videos for the G6 useful too. www.collisionblast.com/auto-body-and-paint-tutorials/pontiac-g6-tutorials/
Wifes G6 needs this done and she doesn't want to pay a mechanic. After seeing this I REALLY miss my '87 Chev pickup.
Thank you SO MUCH for this tutorial! I thought replacing the break light was bad (in 2 weeks, rear and front lights both burned out? Not good) but my front light was a royal pain in the butt. I could not get the front assembly to fully detach and pull out (I noticed you struggled there a bit too) so I had my wife hold the bumper plastic and assembly as far forward as possible so I could twist everything out. Even then I had to detach and reattach the bulb twice before it would turn on. Careful with them! They are SCORCHING to the touch when lit! It's in and working though, couldn't have done it without you.
Get Video! I would add one more minor step after you have replace Bulb and ready it is ready to be put back in place.turn on headlight to confirm it is working before you put it all back together, just to make sure it working. It is possible to get a Defective bulb out of the package.
True...
I use your video every time i need to change my bulbs! Super helpful!!
I like the way you just get to the point , I will be looking forward to more G6 fix it classes. Peace ✌️
This was very helpful. My bulb just blew and I was not sure how to get the assembly off.
I agree with gpof. Just did mines. Painters tape is a good suggestion. Also used Sylvania taking off that second rubber. Work well. Took me 10 minutes. Thanks.
Thanks for the video, my bulb blew the other day and need to replace. Much appreciated.
I'm glad the video helped. Thanks for watching!
I am glad it went well for you! Thanks for watching!
I found I didnt even have to pull the light right out (Very difficult and worry about cracking plastic grill surround) I just wedged it out best I could. Saved any paint from chipping, cracking, and the paint putting it back in. Either way, great tutorial, thanks!
Seriously... thank you so much for posting this video. This gay guy was clueless, with your help I changed my light bulb! Again thanks!!!
+miguel Carrillo Thanks for watching!
Thanks a lot. I knew I could do this myself and I probably save a boat load of money.
As the owner of an '08 G6 GT sedan purchased new, I can totally relate. It's now my daughter's car. Even done the easy way, it's not so easy. I suppose you could reach behind the headlamp and do it, but I have large hands. LOL
Not sure if anyone else had this issue, but I couldn't get the light fixture to come out from the bumper. There just wasn't enough clearance, and I was worried I was going to bend the bumper. I started to really pull and twist and press, but I could tell the plastic was about to reform..
However, I was able to reach my hand in and carefully remove the bulb cover, bulb and replace. It definitely takes some patience; wear gloves; and if you have small-medium size hands, you'll be okay.
Thanks for the great video!
That's awesome! I am glad it helped you! Thanks for watching!
thanks man had a lil trouble getting it out...all i needed to do was take a couple plastics out. Lights... check.
Very helpful and so much easier than I would have imagined it to be.
Thanks for watching. You can see more G6 videos at www.collisionblast.com/auto-body-and-paint-tutorials/pontiac-g6-tutorials/
Thanks, your video saved me a trip to a mechanic.
You're welcome!
Thanks for the video! =) this will help me out a lot. Who knew a little bulb could be so expensive.
Thank you for the video. Your way worked perfect. They don’t make it easy. 👍🏻👍🏻
Just followed your video, it was exactly the process.many thanks !!
Awesome...I am glad you found it useful!
I'm glad it helped!
Great video! Much easier than the Malibu.
Thank you, Pep Boys said you had to take off the whole fender to replace the bulb and will cost me $99. OUCH! I'm going to do it myself your way!
BY THE WAY!! this is not the poster, Mark Rudge, this is his little teeny homemaker who likes to learn stuff and surprise her sweetie after a long hard day. I tried it the way that you showed it..... I couldnt get the headlight off, then I watched the "redeck way to do it" that you talked about ( he is ramrod340x, btw), and the one thing that he emphasized, was that when you pull it forward, you have to get your hands underneath the headlight, then pull. That was something he emphasized. (if you did say it, and I missed it, sorry, but he said that it was the only way to get that [side] clip out. The clip was my problem. hope it works!!!!!
I'm about to try it, and let you know how it all goes! My hard working man that lets me take care of the car and the house and the rental house, and that confidence in me from him, makes me wanna learn how to fix things! a month ago, in the car oil and filter, and cleaning the distributor, then I replaced some under sink stuff and helped with a washing machine hose yesterday!
I don't mean to brag, but to be a biology nerd and a little mommy, I get proud of myself and super excited when I can do grease monkey stuff, and even better when I do it on my own!!!!!
Thank you for your instruction!!!!
One more question--before the change, it seemed that the headlight itself was taking in moisture, like it had rained inside the headlight. Is there a seal or bolt or other thing that is loose that might be causing that?
I have various tapes and stuff like that (I know you said you were a body shop guy.) I have plumbing tape. I am very much going at a long shot- would one of them help the water leak issue? (sorry if that is a horribly ignorant question)
Mark Rudge there is a special product you can buy to remove the condensation in the bulbs
jaidsalgado I worked for GM and they will tell you that that condensation is normal sometimes. GM is not the only automaker that has that issue. I have seen it happen on newer Mercedes also.
This method got the job done just fine I appreciate the video sir.
Great video, going to buy the headlight bulb now. Thanks!
OK, I just changed my bulb for my drivers side headlight in my 07 G6 and for other novices like me I wanted to give a few comments on things..
First the tabs are like dry wall screws the way they go in they expand. So what you want to do is wiggle the outer layer all the way out letting the inner layer contract and come out so they don't break. You also want to pull the two layers at the top so there is a gap when replacing they go in real easy then, pop the bottom in then press on top layer..
thanks for the video, saved me a bunch of time and scraped paint
Thank you so much for this! We were able to change out without a problem and quickly!
+Shelly Chambers You're welcome, thanks for watching.
Thanks so much for that, you just saved this girl a pretty penny!!
I'm glad you found the video useful and saved a few bucks. Thanks for watching.
Thank You for taking the time.
thank you, made it easier for me to replace the light bulb
Ma man you just made my life a whole lot easier!
Amazing!!! I was able to do it in no time st all!! Thank you very much!!
Thanks for this video ! Look forward to seeing more !👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Had no problem thanks to your video! Super, thanks!
I agree, why can't they all use the clips. Much easier!! Thanks for watching
Just my wonderful luck that I got a ticket this evening for missing a headlight and for not having insurance (been unemployed for several months). The insurance charge will stick but I was at least given the chance to replace the headlight within 72 hours and to have that charge dropped. I wish I had seen this video earlier in the day. My sibling purchased the bulbs with the last of his money but we take the car to a dealership for changing headlights because we're scared about ruining the vehicle. We tried it a few years ago and after seeing the front had to come off, we just...gave up. Your video was made in 2012 and we tried to change it in, like, 2014. Too bad we didn't find this video back then :/
Anyways, I think tomorrow morning I'm going to try installing those bulbs. I've gotta start learning how to do more for my car on my own because unemployment and mandatory vehicle maintenance do not go hand in hand :(
This method definitely works! I didn't do it on my own though. I needed a wrench that'd fit the 7mm socket that I had and thus went to Advanced Auto Parts. The wrench was locked on the shelf by an anti-theft device but when I went to ask a rep for help getting it off the shelf, he inquired as to what I was trying to do to the car. I told him, he instantly got a tool kit and just helped me change them right there, three bulbs in all. He didn't have to do that and said he wasn't supposed to do that much. I definitely was appreciative, so I paid him $20, which is paltry but it's all I can spare since I also need to scrape funds to pay for car insurance. We got the headlights off using exactly this method though so indeed it works :) Thank you!
Oh, and he too mentioned that should they quickly go out again, it likely is the connectors. We also slapped some clear tape over one of my headlight covers because I didn't notice it had a crack, exposing it to rain water.
Thanx for your help on my good ol G6
No problem 👍
Thanks for the tips, doing the project tomorrow!
Thanks for watching. I have more videos for this G6 at www.collisionblast.com/auto-body-and-paint-tutorials/pontiac-g6-tutorials/
Thanks Cheator40!
Damn they didn't make this easy, Very helpful thanks!
