Gold Coast Barra Tactics - Barramundi fishing tips and best lures
Вставка

- Every year more and more Barra are turning up on the Gold Coast. Rare encounters are usually as Jack and Jew by-catch, though there are a few fishos mad enough to have ground it out hard to earn some consistency in their catches when their stars align. I’ve thought hard about whether to post a video on this topic out of respect for these fishos and the relatively small numbers currently being caught. For that reason I’ve focused on tactics and lure options specifically and deliberately left the rest of the Gold Coast Barra pursuit up to you! If you’re curiosity gets the better of you and you make it your mission to get your GC Barra, good luck to you! ;) The grind is real! Let me know what you think....

Ever since I found your channel my fishing abilities have more than tripled. Thanks for all of the effort you put in to creating these videos
Would have preferred to see you catch one 👍
Oh Mate! Grinning threw the whole video, the prospect of Goldie Barra, speechless! Gotta chase those golden slabs!
Another video with some great information for anyone wanting to have a go, good on ya John
Loved the Abu 4500 in the best colour they made! Ive souped up a 4600 with more $ than id admit to my wife, but now with 9 hybrid ceramic bearings, and a few other bits its smoother than any round reel ive ever held and most low profiles too come to think of it. Thanks again for the great content.
Great to see the Abus in use! ... We spent the 90s doing long canoe trips in the canals between Bond Uni and Cascade gardens, so much fun. I sure do miss those sessions
Awesome John, killing it with your vids mate.
Gold Coast: fish the shit out of the drains
Darwin: walk 2 min from my house to catch an 80cm barra first cast
LOL
Prove it.
Aquatic Mullet okay mate. 😂
@Aquatic Mullet Hes making joke because in Darwin they are sooooo easy to catch. The only jerk off here is you
Awesome stuff mate, been a bit bummed lately cause of all the rain pretty much shutting down the estuaries but you've just sparked the flame again!! Now im off to gear up and get out snd have a crack!!!🎣🎣
Awesome video mate! Great to know some of the tips for barra fishing.
Gold Coast 🤘 Good memories fishing in and around the city 👍
John, are you gonna review the new 5" Holt Productions Swim Prawns? I'm keen AF to get some when they released on his shop tonight
Love your videos keep up the good. I watch a all your videos for tips and the help me get bigger fish keep up the good work
Great vid. Enjoyed the explanation! Barra on the gold coast is something I've never targeted but one day I might come across one or two 🤞👌!
Snagd Fishing hope ya make a video out of it
@@dylanpillar2678 it's on my list mate, definitely keen to scan some up and throw a few lures at them.
Snagd Fishing hopefully it’ll make some awesome content for your channel
@@dylanpillar2678 cheers mate. It'll be epic! 🔥
Snagd Fishing anything on your channel is mate 😉😂
I can’t seem to download your kayaks guide . Can you offer any suggestions pls
Can't grasp chucking into fresh run off on salt fish. Worked a treat fresh on fresh water fish like Bass. Can they adjust that quick?
Yeah mate they can. Up here you have big Barra sitting in the fresh billabongs that will go straight over the barrage into big tidal salt water no problem at all. The run off fishing just makes the Barra really easy to target 👍
Just found your channel
Great content.
Been looking for this info.
Cheers
Stoked to hear you’re into it Peter ;) cheers
I have seen a metre plus barra swimming up a waterfall in currumbin creek in the fresh while I was walking around fishing for bass.
are you serous?? that's crazy
Yeah thought it was kids throwing big rocks in the water and I look over at the water fall and there was a metre plus swimming up it and flicking water everywhere and hit the big pool of water and disappeared.
@@TyCampbell666 was that at the rockpools? i can't imagine what area that would've been, i know there's a body of water around that wooden bridge and the swimming hole
Nah not that far up the creek
Ty Campbell how far up does it turn into fresh water?
Chasing barra definitely isn't for the faint of heart if you want a real fishing challenge then chase these buggers, definitely a harder fish to target then jacks and other esturine species on the Goldcoast.
Taken me over 4 years to have finally caught one😅
Great video as always, you've given people a better shot at catching one of these Goldcoast treasures :)
Nice one John
Great Video , as always top info ! What was your rod and reel set up .? Looks awesome .
Thanks for the helpful info for that elusive Goldy Barra. I would have thought it almost impossible to find with the colder water than up north? Yes, catch & release for sure. We need to look after our fisheries,
What would throw at fresh water Barra compared salt water? Is there much of a difference?
How do you keep your plastics such as the chasebaits prawns from melting? Have tried a number of different ways but still get the tails of them melting a bit and obviously ruining the prawn. Cheers
I found the best way for myself is putting them back into the packet the same way they were on the shelf, if you mix different plastics together they often melt. I know it takes up space and is fiddly but keeps them in good condition.
bottom off tide helps too when barra feed hour before low to low good time
Hey where is this spot wouldn’t mind checking it out
An Abu! Good to see. I still have several i use also. Great basic reel.
using a proper abu baitcaster, what an absolute mad dog
Would really love to see some spring time bass at the start of the new season
I was told by a bloke who worked at a tackle shop that closed down a few years back that him and his mates all threw in and bought a heap of barra fingerling and released them into a fresh water lake on the gold coast.
I’d believe it mate. There’s been plenty of tank Barra released into those lakes over the years too I’m sure. Some more turning up each year now. The canals seem like a beaut spot for em too
Hey mate what size hook combination is best for the 90mm cherry blood.. cheers
I never even knew. Amazing
yeah im gonna try a new type of fg knot where you do the standard 20 wraps then 2 half hitches then a overhand knot with the flouro tag then get that as close as possible to the fg then if there is space in between the overhand and fg's top hitches just fill them up with half hitches then put the half hitches on tag and then a couple on the braid and im gonna test it out
No offence mate I didnt finish watching the video but did you even get a bite?
Bloody good stuff!
Onya Jonny. Great vid. How good has all this rain been! Seen some good Barra being caught. 👍
Surprised James hasn't got you testing the new 5" swim prawns.
Would love to see a vid on the jointed mullet 👍
Great vid
do you guys have trouble with fg knots from the half hitches/ rizzuto finish walking off the fg and coming apart?
Billy Jimy I just use a uni to uni but maybe you’re not doing enough half hitches with your fg at the end or maybe not enough wraps on your leader but you could just watch a video to make sure you’re doing it right.
@@dylanpillar2678 yea i do 20 wraps and 2 half hitches then a 4 wrap (half hitch) rizzuto finish and it comes apart in a couple casts and i make sure it doesnt go through the worm hole of the baitcaster im going to try bunring the flouro tag to see if it stops the rizzuto from walking off the fg
Billy Jimy I’ve seen lots of people spit on the knot and melt the end of the leader tag a bit and roll it up into a mushroom looking thing so the wraps can’t move off of it
@Buster Himen yeah i cant do the double uni ( though i use it on lighter 6 lb braid to 8 lb) leader i cant do it with 20/20 pound leader/braid as it is to thick to cast through guides
Billy Jimy I use 20/20 and it works fine through my guides on all my rods you just have to cut the tags super short especially the leader bc it gets caught very easily but other than that I have no problems with it
where in gold coast is this
Great video mate. As someone who is shithouse at lure fishing this is awesome
When I started watching this, I immediately thought, WT ? targeting Barra on the gold coast ?? it wasn't that long ago that would have been tantamount to targeting white pointers (I'm talking sharks, here) in the local swimming pool, and I though I must be going crazy, but later on you explain the how's and why's about their increasing presence. I used to love chasing them (usually unsuccessfully) and also Threadfin salmon, in Gladstone years ago.
Great video John.
I caught a small Barra (30cm ish) between Jacobs Well and the Pin in the early 90’s. I didn’t believe that it was a Barra so I took it to the tackle shop, they said it was a Barra, I still couldn’t believe it so I took it to Fisheries and they confirmed that it was a Barra and they did get caught in that area not often, but often enough that it didn’t surprise them
Been Barra in the Coomera for as long as I can remember. It's now the worst kept secret but as long as everyone looks after them they'll stick around but will never be prolific like northern waters.
Are they in the Tweed system?
Yep. I’ve seen a couple there, never caught one though.
@@mylurebox I got totally smoked on a Swimbait, off a big structure in Murwillumbah (before the floods). Thought it was mangrove Jack, but maybe it was a Bazza 🤩
Whatever it was, it had some grunt, that's for sure
TIPS ON CATCHING THE ONLY 5 BARRA ON THE ENTIRE GOLD COAST BUT WE CANT FIND THEM SORRY.
TIP 1 GO WAY NORTH
TIP 2 REFER TO TIP 1
Gee mate when do you sleep? Between videos getting made before school then editing to get a video out plus school and lesson planning i could imagine very little sleep along with the kids!!
I want what you are having 😜
Is this lake Orr?
What rod is that? Looking for. Rod to get started in this heavy kinda fishing for the big girls.
Storm Arashi
Model?
Can’t say man, all I know is that’s it’s a Storm Arashi swimbait model.
Its rhe swimbait model
Would it be good for the jacks and flatties too seems long enough for the cast just maybe not a soft enough tip?
You’ll have to try one of my 6” paddles now. 👍
Hey, anyone know what reel that is or what type of reel it is?
I remember years ago someone said they caught a metre long barra in tally
25 mins no Barra ??
Where is this?
Nice
Do a boat review run threw set up sort of thing
Good vid once again mate! However I’d highly recommend running at least a 70lb+ leader, 40/50 just won’t cut it on the big 1m+ fish. This is coming from first hand experience👍🏻
After spending a few nights at Faust Dam hitting barra on soft plastics, I'd have to agree. Probably lost 4-6 barra using 60lb leader. The next day I upgraded to 80lb and was fine. We boated 8 fish that trip with none of them under a metre.
I have caught metre barra on 50lb sunline fc rock without a problem
Ty Campbell never said it can’t be done, you can get lucky, but if the lure is swallowed it’s game over
Luke Baltzer I’ve fished the top end for a decade - WA, NT and FNQ. I use 50 lb leader. I’d increase it if you are in an impoundment among the sticks. But 50 lb is more than enough in a location like that and connects with far more fish.
Martin incorrect, a 1m fish will rub through 50lb like nothing, sticks are the least of your concern, they have razor sharp gill rackers.
Nice👌👍
I honestly didn’t know Barra is this far south.
scott 675 that is very interesting. Do they actually breed as well? I mean are they here for good?
Swedish made Ambassadeur 5500?
Always releasing :)
Never catching lol
cheap schnider 30lb and live yellowtail pike
gold coast doesn’t have runoff darwin has propa floodplain runoff
Stop distracting us and catch one otherwise I don’t believe there are Barra at the gc. If you can’t catch one how could anyone else?
Thats a really old reel! Back when rock n roll was not called classic rock.
You just know this bloke isn’t allowed within 300ft of a school.
Wdym
Great video as usual, but can you stop showing my spots tho.
i didnt see a barra
Should just catch a fish while you're at it . Practical demonstration
Whats up
I see no Barra
Where’s the Barra 😂
So so wrong in so many ways
A fish would be nice now and again..🥴
Next video: how to catch 3m Flattys
That's easy mate... Whole chooks from woolies
noob no barra dislike
Too much speaking
He makes colouring Books with Crayons if thats more your level?
Im first Yeww
The most overrated fish in Australia.
