Glad Backlund is getting some love. Pound for pound one of the strongest wrestlers. Could legit go in the ring. Fitness freak. His insane 90s heel run was so underrated.
About 10 years ago I was sitting with Ivan Koloff in Queens N.Y. at an autograph signing an not too many people were around, and I asked him who he thought was the strongest wrestler, and without hesitating he told me Bob Backlund. Koloff said that "Backlund could lift a 280 pound wrestler up with one arm and hold him up on his shoulder for the atomic kee drop with no problem." I figured Koloff would have said Patera, SSBG, or Sammartino. He basically said what Jake the Snake said, that Backlund was so strong, with a freak of nature type strength.
@@drwlpwasright5132 Jack Brisco in his book says he was one of Bob's first -- if not THE first -- matches, and Leroy McGuiirk, the promoter in Oklahoma then tolkd Jack to take him in hand, keep him from flying off the handle and to watch out for his strength, because the really young Bob didn't quite realize just how strong he was. Maybe not quite Danny Hodge strong, or maybe not in quite the same way, but it was something everyone was told to watch for when he was a journeyman. One of the wildest videos of him I ever saw was of him wrestling Hogan in....'80? '81? and Hogan puts him in a short-arm scissors (yes, Hogan DOES know some pro wrestling mat moves), and Bob rolls to his feet and almost one-handed, lifts Hogan up to his shoulder and walks him around the ring. In. Sane.
Bob was one of the greatest wrestlers to hold a title in the profession. He and Brad Rheingans were standout wrestlers at North Dakota State. Bob was wrestling strong.
I was at an event in pa for pictures and autographs a few years ago. Out of nowhere Backlund stood on the table started yelling incoherently and just sat down like nothing happened. Hilarious
As a kid born and raised in ny we had one champ backlund, he beat every heel from late 70s/early80s, forget about race, bockwinkel, etc, no cable, no ppv, no internet, no smart phone, they had magazines then but they were off by 2-3 months then!
Rick Martel said Bob Backlund is freakishly strong! Apparently this arm wrestler was hassling him and Bob wasn’t interested, so the arm wrestler got aggressive! Rick Martel said Bob ended up arm wrestling him and smashed his arm down a dozen times and the arm wrestler couldn’t do anything to stop him!
The whole time I was watching this all I could think about was how Mr. Backlund was the only wrestler other than Sheik to ever be able to use his Persian Clubs.

Its refreshing to be with like minded people that can appreciate a good maniac. My wife was introduced to me originally that i was "the good crazy " hah.
I remember on one of the Saturday afternoon shows like All Star Wrestling when they were filming in, I think, Hamburg, PA and he came out in the beginning of the show with one of those wheels with a handle on it and did like reverse sit ups for the entire hour show. Backlund was a freak of athletic nature. As Ventura said he just wasn't flashy.
I was told a story how he was working out with Ivan Putski who was always known for his power and muscular physique and Bob rag dolled him all over the ring.
Bob was the odd man out in his second stint. He should've been at least a manager or commentator. Now if it was Jake instead of him at that time, the New Gen era would've been better for sure
@@user-og5qp4rn8o Bob was 'America's hero' back on the 70s. Defeating Billy Grahmn for the world title and getting cheated in 83 to the Iron Shiek (Skalaand throwing in the towel) is how he's remembered. That's what the majority of people remember. Wrestling didn't start when you began watching. Try to remember thar.
@@johnliberty3647 Many have passed, but most are still alive. Millions of fans who were born in the 40s, 50s and 60s (baby boomers) are still around. Life expectancy is much higher than 65. @johnliberty3647 Really? The late 70's/early 80's wasn't THAT long ago! Most of the boomers and gen Xers are still alive. You make it sound like Backland was champ during the Depression 😆
Mr. Bob Backlund in the 90's was hilarious as a heel 😂😂
I wish they would have let him run with the belt for a few months while they got big Kev ready. Would have been entertaining as hell.
Bob in the 70's and 80's was so boring
@@qaz-fi1id So true. I never would have expected him to be such a good heel.
Our next President Mr. Backlund endorses this message.
@tedcox6969 Never would have expected that from Mr.Bland.

Minnesota guy.

Brad tossed Stink Ass Vader around like a rag doll in training

Backlund is awesome
Loved 90's Bob Backlund 😂
He was champion when I started watching the "WWWF" in the late 70's. Does anybody remember the Harvard step test with SGT Slaughter? Great fun!

WE WANT BOB BACK AN JAKE BACK TOO !!!!!!!! YOU BOTH ROCK !!!
Bob is great with the youth. He is hilarious and inspiring!
Keep em coming. I know Jake is super busy but these are always great. Keep telling it ,like it is 😊
Always loved Backlund especially when he'd slap on the Cross faced chicken wing and start screaming
I thought Kevin Nash did the most f bombs

I remember backlund always wore the bow ties
I remember Diesel saying he wore false teeth and Barney Miller suits. Lol
I was told a story how he was working out with Ivan Putski who was always known for his power and muscular physique and Bob rag dolled him all over the ring.
its true Backlund was just freakishly strong and would hurt you. He was a Nice enough guy. I think the lunatic stick is him kayfabing.
That’s what you get when you go your whole career without ever once eating marijuana.
Bob had that deceiving strength!
Watched Bob Defend the WWF Title in Torontos Maple Leaf Gardens against Greg the Hammer Valentine Great Match ! Never knew he was so strong
That’s. Mr. Backlund!!!!!!!
80s Backlund vs early 2000's Angle would be epic
Any Andy Kaufman stories?
Sour grapes from Jake. Backlund made it clean.
I met Jake and Bob in my life. Both were larger than life.
Bob was the odd man out in his second stint. He should've been at least a manager or commentator. Now if it was Jake instead of him at that time, the New Gen era would've been better for sure
Bob was a great WWWF Champion.
Howdy Doody 😂
Damn.. Jake dropped like 10 F-bombs in under 3 minutes. That's a bit excessive even for Jim Cornette's standards
i met bob on monday night raw and i ask for his sutograph he said buy my shirt and i will sign it i said no thanks im good
MR Bob backlund vs Kurt angle
If they were the same vintage, that'd be an interesting match.
Harley Race brought him to his wrestling school and the young kids couldn't keep up with Bob Backlund
When you're so demented, normal people seem like maniacs to you.
It's like Lizzo saying Twiggy is fat.🤣
Gotta build the vocal memory in a 1 year old that way. They end up in top 3%.
Heel Jake vs Mr Backlund = another missed opportunity!
Mr Backlund was a dangerous individual - nobody was safe from the perils of the crossface chicken wing in the 90s
Jake on oxygen
His new high
is Jake having trouble breathing?
Why is Jake on oxygen?
COPD
To breathe
Bob should've never turned heel. Terrible call on Vince's part.
You are in the minority with that opinion. He's more remembered for that than anything.

Very drunk. But, is he using some breathing apparutus. Not good.
Oxygen is a breathing apparatus? I mean it’s not a trachea tube
