I was just looking up the Nikon D850 and I’m really considering it myself. I currently have a Sony that I have had for over 10 years and I really want to get back into photographing wildlife.
Congratulations on your new D850. I have had mine for a few years now and the creative possibilities are just about endless. You will discover the strengths and weaknesses of your various lenses fairly quickly. The camera is a rock.
I also bought a Nikon d850 this week. The decisive factor for me is the fact that there is a large selection of second-hand lenses. You can find almost new lenses at "small" prices, the Z mount and Canon RF mounts are much more expensive. And the D850's photo quality is superb. I think I have a wonderful hobby with it. Btw, nice and informative youtube channel 👍
How lovely to see such a charming lady photographers reaction on opening the box for the first time. I think we all underestimate that feeling of excitement at that moment. I switched from an APS-C D5500 to a D810 six years ago, and then three years ago, moved on to the D850. It is truly an epic camera and you'll never fail to be pleased with your results. Especially with those trinity lenses you just aquired. In fact, I very recently downgraded my ultrawide from the 14-24 to the 16-35 because it was both a heavy lens, and impossible to use filters without huge cost and inconvienience. The 16-35 has distortion, but one or two clicks in Photoshop etc and you're back in the room. I shoot landscape mostly, otherwise I would have kept the 14-24 as filters are very rarely needed in other kinds of work. I only use ND and Circular Polarisers so its much easier now. Going back to the camera, it is a mighty beast and does need lots of taming. The customisable buttons are as much of a boon as they are a curse, as oftentimes you forget what you have set them to do. I swapped my PV button from preview to exposure mode and a few weeks later couldnt figure out why I couldnt use preview on that button! The main thing though, is, you have probably the best camera Nikon ever made now, I think it is so durable you could use it to whack people over the head in a bar fight and it would still work just like new. I didn't see such a jump in resolution as you will, as the D810 was already well packed with pixels, but, there is a jump to be sure. The main thing I wanted to say was to thank you for reminding us just how joyous it is to have the release which a new camera (camera in particular) brings to us all. It is durable, but, treat it kindly and it will probably last you a lifetime. Just wait until you take one of your favourite shots with it, you'll be so pleased you updated.
It definitely felt like Christmas morning opening that box! I’m already so impressed with its durability… I photographed a waterfall a few weeks back where I walked behind the cascading water, and while it didn’t get drenched, there was enough overspray to get a bit damp. It held up like a champ! Hopefully I’ll never have to test out the bar fight scenario 😁, but I’m sure it’ll hold up to that as well. Lol! So far, no regrets at all in upgrading to the D850. I’m still getting used to its features, but I’m super happy with the photos I’m creating!
I was the same way when I got my d850 and unboxing it, I felt like a kid when my dad bought me several Tonka toy trucks. Everyone enjoy and keep taking beautiful photograph to share with the world.
Thanks, I sure appreciate that! We used the iPhone 13 Pro and DJI mics to film this particular video. Here’s a link to my gear page which lists all the gear I use for photography/videography: lovethatshot.com/photography-gear/
Very happy for you. I use the D810 since 2018, before I had the D7100. It was a huge upgrade, however the learning curve with Nikon is so easy, you will have a great time. The D850 is still one of the best cameras out there right now.
Thanks so much! It’s great to hear from someone that’s made a similar upgrade that the learning curve isn’t too bad… looking forward to mastering these new features!
D810 also since 2016. Oly 5.6 mp point & shoot before that. I waited until I thought Digital quality caught up to film. Still have my Canon AE-1 Program 35 mm film camera purchased in 1983.
Excellent video! I shot with a Nikon D810 for eight years and decided to upgrade to the Nikon D850 recently. I am extremely pleased with my purchase just as you are. I purchased a sony mirrorless camera years ago but I just couldn’t get used to the EVF. I’m old school, and still love the OVF. Maybe in 5yrs I will reconsider.
I did the much the same thing as you in 2023 - upgraded to the D850, as well as purchasing the the NIKKOR 24-70 f2.8 VR lens (in lieu of going mirrorless). No regrets! Superb image quality, plus you just can’t beat the ergonomics and general “feel” of this camera. Enjoy!
I started with a D70, then went to a D7100, picked up a refurbished D7200 body and use that almost exclusively now. But I've slowly been collecting FX lenses for the eventual leap to full frame. I wanted the 750, but waited for the bugs to be worked out and thought the D780 would be it. But I think after seeing all the amazing shots and videos taken with the D850, that will be my FX camera! I totally agree with you on mirror less camera's and how dslrs just work better for me.
I looked forward to upgrading to full frame for the longest time… and I’m not disappointed at all. The D850 keeps blowing my mind every time I use it! You’re going to love it, I’m sure!
I shoot an 850 for my two main arenas, small item product, and a sort of rural "street"/landscape. But through my grandson a genre came about to shoot youth sports athletic analytical videos (pitching mechanics, batting mechanics, etc.) As it turned out the quality desired and preferred optics (allowing me to hide behind a chain link fence) resulted in the D780 being the best option. Video a half a cut better that a z6 (better than the 850), using F mount glass, with my preferred OVF when not shooting video. Thing about it. Even with the z8 I still don't have a compelling reason to "upgrade"(?) to mirrorless except it's could become my "precious."
Great video and I know you’ll love your new DSLR! I switched to full frame mirrorless in June of 2022. I was shooting a full frame Canon 6D Mk II and decided to stick with Canon and their mirrorless system. I’ve been very pleased with my decision so far. 💜😎💜
Excellent choice, I also purchased this gear recently. Comparing to the previously used D610, the D850 image sharpness and performance in low light situations is mind blowing!
Awesome! I upgraded last year to a D500 from a D200 in order to shoot indoor sports (my daughters play a lot of volleyball). I bought an excellent used D500 from KEH. I've had an excellent older version of the Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR and an older version of the Nikon 28-70 f2.8 (non VR) in my lens arsenal for about a decade. I've always invested in GOOD GLASS (typically non DX) with the theory that you can use it on upgraded bodies over a much longer perion of time. I recently bought a used 14-24 f2.8 from KEH. It's an impressive lens. So now I have the Holy Trinity of pro grade lenses. I'm waiting for more used D850s to become available now that the Z8 has been announced. Then I will snap one up. You made a great purchase. The D850 is considered the finest DSLR ever made.
Congrats. I also went with the D850 a year and half ago because of my 3 prof. 2.8 lenses. I have owned Nikons for 30 years and it’s the best one yet. I’m sure I will get a Z8 eventually but I don’t regret the purchase.
I have a d850 and a couple of Olympus mirrorless with all pro lenses and yes the Olympus is awesome for weight and size but the d850 is a beast it is heavier but I’m a big guy so no issues with the weight have a great time with you new camera and i hope it gets you where you need to go
Congrats. I too recently got a D850 after switching to mirrorless a decade ago and now back to DSLR. The other pros of DSLR shooting especially with the newer DSLRs like the D850 and D780 is the dual AF systems, the OVF where with EVFs of mirrorless you get lag due to its real world viewing to refresh rate if you are shooting fast subjects. The others are Much better battery life and the ability to natively use any F mount glass dating back to the early 1970s, oh and also it is universally rated as the best DSLR ever made for multiple uses.. Enjoy your new D850, it is a wonderful and solid tool, I love mine and finding it is that desert island camera that will last for years to come.
Congratulations. I have had the Z6 for several years, but just added a used D780 because I think DSLRs still work great and it is the best platform for all the F-mount lenses. I wish the D780 had the control layout of the D850. The professional layout is best.
I bought a new D850 last summer. I can use all my old manual focus Nikon glass on it natively. And I can add to the kit with zillions of Lenses from the used market
You will love your D850. I have had mine for 4 years and it is still like a brand new surprise. There is a lot to learn, but the adventure itself gives you something to challenge you.
Hi I just came across your channel and I'm a new subscriber. Been watching reviews and looking into the D850 in the last couple weeks and decided I'm going to be buying one this coming week. 👍🏻
Greetings from Scotland from this fellow Nikon fan. Thank you for your beautiful video. I suspect your new purchase is the beginning of a lifelong friendship and relationship. Happy adventures!
Congrats! You are correct, the newer/mirrorless cameras don’t take “better” photos. The mechanics are just different and video and autofocus are improved, which is beneficial in some ways and some ways unnecessary. But the actual photo quality of the D850 will always stand up against anything out there. I personally switched to the Z9 last year for my own reasons, but I am keeping my D850 because it’s just so good. IMO it’s still the best DSLR, a camera you will be happy with as long as you choose to own it! Happy shooting!
Congrats! Have been using the d850 for a long time now! Its a beast, a powerhouse, never disappoints, always gets the shot somehow! In my opinion the last best dslr ever built across all manufacturers! Have fun!
I am surprised you were not getting good images in your work with the d7000. With the pixel density with a crop sensor it is equivalent to a 32 megapixel on a full frame. I am happy for you, enjoy your new camera.
I used the D850 for so many events and was never disappointed. Then, I updated to the Z7, then very recently the Z9 (with quality Z lenses). I have yet to be able to capture photos as beautiful as those I captured with the D850. I'm sure it's my shortcomings, since the Z9 is in every way amazing (except what seems to be noisier photos at some ISO values). Nevertheless, I'm now returning to my D850 with a sigh of relief--so glad I kept it. I wish you the very best with your D850--may you have many years of wonderful photography. Thank you for your video.
I appreciate you sharing your experience! I know eventually years down the road I might consider mirrorless, but that probably won’t happen until I find a limitation with the D850. I’ve been enjoying it immensely! Thanks again, and glad you enjoyed the video!
Hi, I'm a new subscriber. I just came across your channel as it popped up on my suggestions list. I'm glad it did. The first minute, you got me hooked, thank you. The sheer joy on your face on unboxing your delivery, priceless.
I still love my d7000. I have tried the r7, 100-500, z6 II, d500 and still go back to the d7000 but I am seriously thinking of getting a d850 :) Mirrorless has so many quirks especially rolling shutter.
My best photos are on a D7000. I will say I purchased a Z 8 and rolling shutter isn't noticeable with how I use it. Also it's an amazing piece of hardware if you have a camera store nearby I would recommend you go to one and try it.
Hi lovely video I've just got my first fx camera I have a D7200dx and just purchased a D610 fx about a month ago was torn between D610 and D750. I'm going to watch your blog site to see how you get on as I try my fx camera keeping the D7200 as its a cracking dslr. Seeing how you get on I might when I'm more experienced with the D610 I might be trading in for a D850 later on at moment I can't really see the point in a z camera as most my glass is for a dslr , right thanks for your time I shall follow you now as I've subscribed watch your experiences from across the pond 😮
It definitely makes a lot of sense when you’re invested in dslr lenses to stay with dslr cameras. So happy to have you joining us from across the pond for our adventures!
Thank you, Misti. I've been shooting with a D750 for a few years now with some great F glass: 16-35mm f/4G, 24-70mm F/2.8G, 70-200mm f/2.8G, and a few primes. I'd like to upgrade, but like you, I'm torn on which way to go (D850 or Z7II), but want to still use my F lenses (yes, I'm aware of the FTZ adapter). My heart says stay with DSLR (albeit relatively dated tech), but my head says go with the future and mirrorless. Your thoughts were helpful as I try to discern my path. All the best.
I have a 750 and a 850. I find after shooting with the 850 the 750 is a shame…. Once you get spoiled with 45 mp pretty hard to go back…. Dynamic range of the 850 pretty hard to beat. Good luck 🤞🏻
Why not a D780? People took this as an incremental upgrade from the D750 but it's not; BSI sensor from the Z6 and Z6II, ruggedness of the D850 but with more features. Also, the only DSLR with usable Liveview and as a matter of fact the same system (including autofocus) as the Z counterparts. Finally, the only DSLR that support AF-P lenses (other than the D6), so truly every F-mount. I upgraded from the D750 I might add. I also jumped to the Z system but will keep my D780 forever, I love it so much.
Best of luck with your D850. I did own both the D750 and D850 and recently traded in my D750 for a used Z7. The Z7 is a great body for travel and vacation shooting due to its lightweight, with the "Z" series lens but when it comes to my landscape shooting you can't beat the D850.
Like you, I'm tossing up whether to go mirrorless or switch my D7200 for the full frame D850. At the moment my head is spinning from watching, and reading, to many reviews on what is out there. I went from a D700 to a D7200 a couple of years back and now I am hunting those extra pixels for printing. I will be watching to see how you find your new D850 as I am still leaning in that direction.... Good luck with that beauty...
How exciting 😃getting a new camera is always a great moment and you've certainly picked a fantastic camera, probably the best in it's class, a true power house. I upgraded my D7200 a while ago and decided to go mirrorless with the Z7II, I now also have the Z9 for wildlife and sport. I've subscribed and will be looking forward to seeing your images with your new camera, take care.
Thanks so much for the sub! It’s the best feeling in the world to experience an awesome new camera. I’m looking forward to sharing my experience with it in my future videos.
I think you made the right decision based on your new lenses. I have a D810 (along with a bunch of other Nikon bodies) and Olympus, Sony, Nikon & Fujifilm mirrorless cameras. I definitely think that mirrorless is the better option with cameras today, and I generally choose a mirrorless body over a DSLR these days when I head out to take photographs. But for full frame, I don't think you can go wrong with a D850 - I'd love one, but I'm not paying £2,200 when I have my D810! Nikon menus are pretty standard across all their cameras and the best/straightforward of all the manufacturers I have used, and you should have no problem adapting to the new camera menus. I look forward to hearing what you have to say about your new camera when you have had a chance to spend some time with it. I am sure you will love it!
Thanks! I finally got a chance to take it on on its first photo adventure this last weekend. I had a blast. Still adjusting and getting used to things, but I think I came away with some pretty good shots overall.
So Great to hear that from somebody today 😊 Everybody just wants to upgrade rather than enjoy the gear they have 🙈 I think that a D850 is all you ever need to become a Great photographer. It is just a great camera. One D850 in my area is for sale and has 850,000 shoots with original shutter. I called the Seller just to ask if it is really original shutter. He confirmed 😂 Amazing 😊
I shoot both Nikon DSLRs ( D7000, D610, D750, D850) and Mirrorless (z5 and Z6 ii) It doesn't hurt to go mirrorless given that you can always use all of your F mount lenses via the FTZ adapter. It just broadens your perspective and mirrorless works like an Automatic car ( vs. stick shift ) I will probably continue to use DSLR because there's a certain character to these old F mount AFS -G lenses that the Z lenses are unable to give. I was a Mirrorless snob for years until I finally realized the advantages it can give you
It's so refreshing to listen to someone who was using essentially an average camera and getting great results, it's long been said to spend money on your lenses because a great lens will still give you great images from an average camera, but average lenses on an expensive camera will still only give you average images. Right now I am wrestling between the D850, Z6 and Z7 moving up from my D610 which has the best low light performance I've seen in a Nikon
Thanks so much, I appreciate your comment! You’ve got quite the exciting decision ahead. Those were the mirrorless cameras I was looking at as well. I’ll be interested to hear which camera you land on.
Showing up with the D850 is game on (not that the others are bad) as it's an amazing camera. I shoot full manual besides autofocus and have distortion control on. If you would like to tune into a community of photographers check out AP Studio's as every Wednesday & Saturday there are live stream chats/texts. All good people with a variety of information. Gratz on the D850!!! Those 50mb RAW's are going to need another hard drive!
Having a camera this powerful is a dream!! Already seeing my hard drive fill up! 😁 Thanks for the community recommendation, I’ll definitely check that out.
Hello! Best wishes from Germany. You are so friendly and it's enjoyment to follow, which kind of Nikon D850 - Trips you realize. For a few days, I went the same way and bought a new D850 because, I love the bigger haptic and dynamic Range of it. So, I am very happy for you! Best Regards from Osnabrück, lower Saxony.
Awesome! I have a very similar experience. In 2023, I upgraded to the D850 from the D7000. I went with the Nikkor 200-500mm for bird photography. I bought the Cotton Carrier chest holster to carry the 200-55mm. I can't wait to get the 14-24mm!
I started with the Sony a6300 and i upgraded to the a7iv when it came out. I wish I would have started with a DSLR, but trust me I will get my hands on this D850. Really love the robustness of it, the big girthy body.
I agree with your reasons for not going mirrorless. Here are mine for what its worth. 1. Cheap F mount legacy glass, there are simply not enough Z lenses yet and they are way too expensive. 2. Battery life. DSLRs have a significantly longer battery life (more economical to run and better for the environment). 3. Weight. We aren't comparing like for like with say a D850 vs a Z7, a Z7 is significantly less capable than a D850 at the same price, but yes, has the same image quality. The better comparison is D850 vs Z8/9, not only more expensive but pretty much the same weight. 4. Lenses are getting bigger and bulkier as the AF motor moves into the lense not the camera. I like the small form factor of Nikon's older screw drive AF. 5. Adaptablity, older lenses on FTZ mount don't work with AF, even G lenses on Z mount I have found to be glitchy, and 3rd party lenses aren't recognised by the software. 6. OVF vs EVF. I don't like looking through a TV screen to see the world, an OVF and a live view screen, in my opinion is the best of both worlds and removing the OVF on mirrorless reduces the options, it doesn't give me more! 7. Mirrorless is an expensive marketing game that doesn't give any advantages for the extra price. My bag at the moment is a D780 (brilliant) and D850, I won't be changing anytime soon.
Excellent choice. I'm making the slow transition to the Z system but I'm still favouring my D500 and D7200 (as I also have F lenses that are still valuable). I mainly shoot sports and some limited events work. I'm beginning to experience why many still refer the DSLRs.
This is a decision that I struggle with as well. I do appreciate the silent shutter, because I shoot birds and wildlife. Owls and raptors in particular. Since many of these pictures are taken in lower light the fact that you see your actual image through the view finder as you adjust your setting is monumental. I think that I am leaning towards the Z8. Sheesh it is expensive!
I can see how the quiet shutter would be very helpful in photographing birds, they are quite "flighty!" Good luck with your decision, any time there's an opportunity for new gear, it's a time to celebrate. :)
@@lovethatshotadventures The main reasons I moved to the Z system was for eye-tracking and for the near elimination of chromatic aberration with Z lenses.
@@heyheyleina3366 you mean the eyebrow tracking? The Z9 is the worst mirrorless camera you can actually spend money on. Better off with the canon R8, or a Sony, than a Z9. Only worse cameras than a Z9 is the Z7ii and Z6ii.
Congratulations on your purchase! I think mirrorless has a ways to go maybe a flagship model with stacked sensor, but few have the budget including myself. Take care
With your new camera, I wish you to take beautiful photos and collect wonderful memories. Rather than the quality of the camera, it is the signature of the person using it that he sees in the viewfinder. In this sense, the photographic camera is a tool by which the decision maker finalizes his decision. I just discovered your channel, subscribed and turned on notifications. I will be waiting for your new videos. Thank you.
I wholeheartedly agree… it’s the photographer, not their gear, that creates the photograph. Thanks so much for subscribing! I can’t wait to share more videos!
I was considering the D780, used, when I was making a decision. That’s a well-loved camera too. In the end I opted to go with the D850 for more megapixels, but I know I would have been happy either way. Have fun with your new upgrade!
Setup Live View with Face Detect, and you'll find it works better for taking photos of people than the Z9. More accurate. Better BSI sensor with higher dynamic range. Unless you take photos of birds in flight, Group Autofocus through the Viewfinder and Face Detect with Live View are better than any Nikon autofocus system currently on the market. Find yourself a 28mm 1.4E for street photos used and you'll have the best camera setup on the market.
8:30 That "selling point" of mirrorless being lightweight is such a scam from all camera brands. Because when you look at the majority of Z lenses, they're three times as big compared to the D lenses (which I use) and the same size if not sometimes twice as big compared to the G counterparts. Even micro 4/3 cameras and lenses are no longer compact like the first couple generations from 2012. BTW awesome video! Glad to see people out there are still buying new Nikon DSLRs. I primarily use Nikon film cameras, but I had D200 since launch 2005 and sold it in 2021 for a Nikon Df. It didn't perform how I expected for weddings, so sold it and picked up three Nikon D700s instead. Before choosing the Df however, I contemplated between it and the D850. I skipped on the D850 because it lacked three features I depend on: close subject priority AF, pop up flash and AF assist beam. Features that are crucial for low lit reception venues. I thought I could get away with the lack of those features with the Df, but nope. So I had to go back one generation with the D700.
First, I like the unboxing video and secondly I love Nikon dslrs. But what was the real reason to upgrade to the Nikon D850? For me its the other way round. I love the older Nikon D series and the D7000 is not yet in my collecton.
Don’t get me wrong, the D7000 is a great camera! It treated me well for ten years. It was just time for me to upgrade due to the reasons I gave in my video. The big one being, I needed to be able to print larger and the D850 checked all the boxes for me.
Good choice.. I use the 850 alot. I use the lumix G-9 alot. For a large print or portrait work I use my Hasselblad 503cx. To me every kit has its place for every project. Just have fun that is the way to deliver your best image. GRINS
Congrats on your new D850 and I like your channel you seem nice. I once had a Nikon camera but now I loath the brand and have shot other brands and now am a Pentaxian. A word of warning regarding the D850 from a channel that shoots Nikon called "Straight out of Camera" . Also the website by the famous Nikon shooter below discusses the problem. When Nikon made the D800 with 36 mega pixels, a certain number of lenses could not resolve the 36mp. Pentax uses this same sensor in its K-1ii. Then when the D850 came out with 45 mega pixels, even more lenses could not resolve the sensor. And this is a problem in every brand that when they bring in new models with more pixels, you have to re-learn photography slightly and maybe change lenses. I would suggest that you return the D850 camera and swap it for the Z7ii, and adapt those lenses and invest in Z glass that will be future proof. Now I'm not telling you this because I think you're dumb or something, but this will ALSO BE A PROBLEM FOR PENTAXIANS soon. Pentax brought out its first full frame dslr with 36mp, and created all new full frame lenses for the camera. But there were also vintage lenses and the film era lenses like the Pentax Limited's that also needed to resolve on that 36mp sensor. I would presume that Pentax might do the 45 mega pixel some time in the future, but currently still sells its professional series medium format camera thats 50 mega pixel. So until Pentax upgrades the pixel size on the Pentax 645z, Pentax might hold off on a full frame 45mp or 50mp sensored camera. So because Nikon is TRANSITIONING from dslr to mirrorless, I think mirrorless would be the better bet. In fact I would think Sony would be the better bet because they basically make the sensors, and upgrade their lenses accordingly before every company bar Canon (who make their own sensors) can. But its ultimately your decision. If you look at the Mansurov site below the 14-24 and 24-70mm barely properly resolve the 45 mega pixel sensors. What he does conclude is that all the Nikon dslr lenses CANNOT RESOLVE THE 45MP, and few can resolve the 36mp, while others can do it stopped down (This is where your two lenses rests). He concludes that the Nikon Z lens ranges can all resolve 45 mega pixels no sweat. I have researched some of the Nikon Z range and the resolution figures are well off the charts. This was something I saw when I researched Pentax years ago that so much of their dslr lenses were out resolving Nikon and Canon lenses and why I switched. This was also a problem with Fujifilm who recently released 2 cameras that are apsc crop sensored with 40 mega pixels, and many of their lenses cannot resolve it. Fujifilm even has a "Recommended List" but much like the Nikon recommended list its not too true as people are finding out. So Fujifilm users are having to dump some extremely sharp lenses, that cannot resolve the new 40 mega pixel cameras. And 40mp apsc works out to 90 mega pixel FF sensor. Fujifilm lenses also tested as off the chart sharp. I also had two Fujifilm bodies and 4 lenses including the 56mm 1.2, and yes, Fujis lenses were super sharp but lacked the character of Pentax glass. So I sold off all my Fujifilm gear last year, and now look in horror at what will be facing many Fuji users as they have to upgrade their lenses for 40mp and higher on apsc. That first series 56mm 1.2 tested sharper wide open @1.2 than the equivalent Nikon 50mm 1.8 at its sharpest which was @5.6, and cannot resolve on the Fuji 40mp bodies. - that was a ridiculously sharp prime lens with zero character and barely any 3D pop dimensionality. So you need to factor in that we could be seeing full frame models of cameras in the next cycle having up to 90 mega pixels, and there will be a massive number of old dslr lenses that cannot resolve that sort of mega pixel counts, and will become literally worthless over night and orphans (Except to the film shooting guys). (The problem with lenses not resolving is as the pixels get smaller, lenses cast "airy disks" that cause more and more blurr as the pixels get smaller and smaller with each iteration of camera sensor. Not a problem on film) I would return that D850, and exchange it for a Z7ii and adapt your existing zooms. Save up my money for SOME PRIME LENSES (preferably) in Z mount and sell off those zooms at a later date. You're always better off with primes as they're always sharper and better anyway. But if you decide to keep it, then go on and enjoy it and it should serve you well for many many years. People rave about the D850, I don't know why, because it doesn't have IBIS like Pentax's do or Pentax Astrotracer, just maybe good auto focus and thats it. If you keep it, I would have to suggest prime lenses even off brand like Zeiss and Sigma should be able to resolve 45 mega pixels - maybe. Dslr is not dead by the way. photographylife.com/nikon-dslr-resolution
DXO formed a list that recommends lenses for the D850 and this was the first time seeing this and they basically mostly recommended non Nikon lenses for the D850. This seems quite accurate too based on my own research of 3rd party lenses and concurs with the reviews I've seen on the real and proper lens review sites like Ephotozine and Lenstip. Optical limits and DXO is typically bulls**t in its reviews of Nikon and Canon lenses always ranking them higher than every other brand. But this list they formed is actually accurate and concurs with other reviewers - I am stunned. But that does not mean I will ever use DXO because of their past grievous lying. The only list where Nikon is on top is telephoto primes because no one else makes telephoto primes anyway. Like one of the sharpest 24-70 2.8 was the Sigma but on some youtube reviews they played it down and said it was mediocre, and on some other sites marked it similarly , but the real review sites had it as off the hook sharp. But the DXO puts the Sigma 24-35 f/2 on top and then the Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 which isn't as sharp, but has lower CA's. Similar with the ultra wide zooms section with the Tamron 15-30 on top. The Tamron 15-30 and 24-70 is rebadged for Pentax which means if Pentax does go 45mp, its got the trinity lenses for it. But I'd say 50mp will be the end point. Look sharpness isn't everything. When we are talking about sharpness here we are talking about resolving ability - can the lens resolve the sensor or is it not happening. You can make exquisite pictures with un-sharp lenses because the lens has character brought on by CA's which help to produce the 3D effect down a single lens. Or lens flares that are used for artistic effect. So if you stick with your D850 here is a great source. www.dxomark.com/the-best-lenses-for-the-nikon-d850/
Congratulations on D850 it’s a great camera! I still own mine and find situations where I prefer D850 but, if you make the jump to mirrorless one day, you’ll see quantum leap forward in technology and image quality. I’m enjoying your videos and passion for photography! (The Z8 would be a great companion 😊)
@@gertwallen that’s nonsense. You need to understand the technology. Z cameras use a different size lens mount. The F mount is 44mm and the Z mount is 52mm. Why is this important you ask? Because Nikon wanted to design a whole new generation of lenses to allow for the lens to be physically closer to the camera’s sensor. Thus virtually eliminating chromatic aberration and lens flare with their newer design and coatings. The rendering of these newer images are actually sharp from edge to edge even wide open and not “soft” as their F mount counterparts are. There really isn’t much comparison between D850 and Z8 or Z9. It’s an entirely different camera. Nikon has already announced that they are discontinuing DSLRs. Nikon is selling what they have to be rid of them. Nikon’s future is in mirrorless. The old DSLRs can create wonderful images but, it’s not mirrorless and even the older F mount lenses render better on Z mirrorless bodies with the FTZ adapter. I just don’t understand the mirrorless bashing from Nikon users who either never owned a Z camera and are diehard DSLR users. You don’t need to take my word for it, just watch it happen before your eyes. I’ll take my Z9 any day over the D850.
@@jorsetti Thanks for your reply. First off: I'm not bashing, I was just asking since I really see many reviews where they compare D850 and Z8 pictures taken in same conditions and they say (of course it's subjective) that color rendering looks better and other comments. I never owned a D850 or Z8., my last camera was a D800E many years ago. Now I'm planning to return to my hobby and evaluating which camera to buy. The price difference is really enticing. The Z8 as you say is technologically more advanced and futureproof, but not considering video, just landscape photography mainly, the D850 which is a tank can last a lifetime with proper care and probably if you show same picture taken with the Z8 and D850, most people would be unable to discern which of the two cameras was used for the shot.
@@gertwallen you have consider the Nikon D850 has a mechanical shutter and eventually will break. When it does break parts to replace will be scarce or not available and likely a used shutter from a previous D850. On the other hand, the Z8 has no mechanical shutter (like the Z9) and no one knows how long a camera will last without a mechanical shutter, it’s too new to know. If you’re only doing landscapes, the D850 is more than capable. I’ve never been disappointed with the color science used in Nikon sensors, even in their DSLRs. It’s all good with Nikon. I suppose if you only shoot JPGs instead of RAW, you have some options otherwise you get what you get out of the sensor. However most photographers (eventually) shoot RAW to adjust the dynamic range and color grade in post with software. It’s kinda the way of the world these days.
Huh, this is strange... I do have an Instagram account. The link doesn't work when I'm not logged in, but as soon as I log in, it works (double-checked the settings and it is public). Instagram must be having a glitch. Anyway, if you're logged in you can find me @lovethatshotadventures It's a small account and I really should update it more often! Lol!
Make sure the firmware is up to date [1.30, but at least 1.20] and then get CF Express Type B cards instead of XQD. XQD was a proprietary card format, owned by Sony but they didn't even use it. Nikon and a few others did. CF Express is an open format, and is the 'standard' for the foreseeable future. The card readers are cheaper since the XQD card readers have to be licensed from Sony. Delkin has a CF-Express[B] & SD combo card reader which is perfect for the D850/Z6II/Z7II.
Definitely a great choice. I have a D7500 and I prefer it to the Sony A7111. It just feels great in the hands and the menu makes sense. But the D850 is the ultimate AND you can use the original Nikon lenses. The Z lenses are nice but EXPENSIVE!! Great purchase. I’m looking for one NOW! lol
Lovely video. I’ve kept my D850 but not tending to use it now as much as my Z6II. My thing is sports and nature, outside of a Z9 mirrorless struggles for my type of sport, its “ok” but D850 just gets it most times. My D850 is now on 750,000 actuations not a peep of an issue yet. The Iso handling is amazing on the Z6II for for arenas its brilliant but when that light isnt an issue the D850 comes out. I will be taking a Z8 or Z7III if either comes as i think its time to move over for me. For Nature - no sound on a click is a game change over the clack clack, but…if its not an issue for you then for me like you the D850 was and is amazing. I do think its the best camera i ever had. It doesnt have the the AF of a D5 but for me its a jack of all trades when it comes to simply delivering an image. I think the first time you have a mirrorless camera for any long period, you will start to swap over. There are things you simply miss through speed of use, speed of setup or simply ease of use,but you only see that when you move back to the D850. Am looking forwards to seeing your work. Keep us updated.
Thanks so much! I am looking forward to experiencing mirrorless at some point in the future. I can totally see the benefits in certain situations. Thanks for the follow!
@@lovethatshotadventures The D850 was one of the best things happened in my life.... It has practically changed by view towards life.. That's right ! A camera changes my perspective towards life. 😇
Congrats, but now that you are climbing the mega-pixel ladder you are going to see how good your technique is. More resolution is going to bring out all the "flaws" in your technique and lenses. You mentioned upgraded glass that is a great move. You may also think about getting battery grip and then you can take advantage of using the bigger batteries that go in the D4 and D5. Now go out and make images and have fun!
I took it out on a photo adventure this weekend to test out the new-to-me features and I’m loving the improved detail and clarity in my photos. Definitely happy with the upgrade. Thanks for the tip on the battery grip, I appreciate it.
Congratulations! You will love it. I love mine D850 and just added a Z9 to the stable. Totally love your project and am in love with Idaho. I have a DVD on the full operation of the D850 and several books on it along with a pocket handbook to refresh my memory in the field. There is a learning curve to it. Make sure you try photo stacking with landscape shots. It is a fantastic feature. Best of wishes. Jim
Thanks so much! Yes, Idaho is just so full of awesome landscapes. I’m planning on tackling photo stacking for sure. I love the effect it gives a photo, especially the detail it brings out in the foreground. I can’t wait!
Beautifull real dslr , the last one nikon made , its a tough hi def beauty , you enjoy your next ten years , your photos will come alive now , everyone that hated full frame fans ,(because they felt inferior) daft , always love the d850, mirrorless is disposable , they have mk 10 and 11s now 😁😁 you will be taken.totally serious withna Dslr , mirrorless users arent keen on learning ,
@@lovethatshotadventures I use the D850 for 4K or 1080P recording also, I like the characters of the sensor and the F mount lenses. They have a certain tinge which adds flavour to the video.
@@lovethatshotadventures some advice on the actual focus, if you are doing talking heads or headshots then go with manual focus and a higher aperture. I actually used the LOAWA super macro 2x for F-mount to do some nice sentimental videos.
Congrats on your Nikon D850. You will love it. Enjoy!!!!!. Rock n Roll!!!!.
Thanks so much! Looking forward to the awesome shots I’ll get with this guy.
I see you Vahagraphy 🌹♥️
I was just looking up the Nikon D850 and I’m really considering it myself. I currently have a Sony that I have had for over 10 years and I really want to get back into photographing wildlife.
The D850 hasn’t disappointed me yet! I upgraded from the D7000… used that camera for 10 years, too. I’d love to hear what you end up choosing. 😊
Congratulations on your new D850. I have had mine for a few years now and the creative possibilities are just about endless. You will discover the strengths and weaknesses of your various lenses fairly quickly. The camera is a rock.
I’ve really loved it! You’re right, the possibilities are endless. 👍🏻
Love how you transmit your ideas, nothing complicated or fancy like other photographer channels.
Thanks! I appreciate your comment. 😊
I want one now! You sure made this look so good! 😮 I wish Nikon kept making dslrs I for one would be buying!
As far as DSLRs go, you can’t beat the D850!
Thanks so much, it’s nice to meet a fellow D850 fan! I hope you enjoy your new camera!
@@markrakenzes4113 I love this! Yes, let’s all keep on capturing the beauty around us!
Well, all I can say is it was a joy watching you be joyful about your new equipment!
Love my D850. Never let me down. I shoot in all kind of weather and never failed. You are going to love it.
Congrats, your video quality looks awesome. What's your gear used

@@derekjordan8420 Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video. Congrats on your new upgrade, too!
Enjoy!
Totally agree! The quality, the feel, it’s a great camera. 👍
Good luck with your new camera. Many believe that the D850 is the best DSLR made (by any company).
Thanks! I’m really enjoying the D850. I feel like its as if I’ve unlocked a new level in a video game! 😁
I love my D850! It has never let me down. A pleasure to use and a worthwhile purchase.
I’m just now seeing your comment… I’m looking forward to many years of use out of my D850. I’m already loving the dynamic range… it’s a dream!
You did your research before your purchase, and you made a good choice. Too many people purchase gear that is not fitted to their use case. Well done.
You‘ve made the right choice. I’ve also own a D850. I really don‘t see the point of switching to mirrorless camera.
Congrats. I also went with the D850 a year and half ago because of my 3 prof. 2.8 lenses. I have owned Nikons for 30 years and it’s the best one yet. I’m sure I will get a Z8 eventually but I don’t regret the purchase.
My thoughts exactly!
Thanks, Art! I'm really enjoying getting to know the D850. You're right... definitely desert island material!
Congratulations. I have had the Z6 for several years, but just added a used D780 because I think DSLRs still work great and it is the best platform for all the F-mount lenses. I wish the D780 had the control layout of the D850. The professional layout is best.
This is the best in the hand feeling camera I’ve ever tried. The grip is fantastic.
Agreed!
Congratulations on your purchase! You've unlocked a whole new world with Full Frame!
Thanks so much! I’ve been dreaming of stepping into the Full Frame world for a while. Excited to finally have this camera in my hands!
I’ve enjoyed the challenge so far! I feel like it’s leveled-up my photography for sure!
Hi I just came across your channel and I'm a new subscriber. Been watching reviews and looking into the D850 in the last couple weeks and decided I'm going to be buying one this coming week. 👍🏻
Congrats on your upcoming D850 purchase! I hope you have a ton of fun with it in the coming year! 😊
Greetings from Scotland from this fellow Nikon fan. Thank you for your beautiful video. I suspect your new purchase is the beginning of a lifelong friendship and relationship. Happy adventures!
Hello to Scotland! I follow a few photographers from your neck of the woods… it’s beautiful country!
I feel your joy! I´m a Canon shooter myself, but, by all accounts, the Nikon D850 is an awesome camera.
How fun! My sister shoots Canon and loves it, too. 😊
Thanks so much!
Congrats! Have been using the d850 for a long time now! Its a beast, a powerhouse, never disappoints, always gets the shot somehow! In my opinion the last best dslr ever built across all manufacturers! Have fun!
So glad I made a good choice. I’ve been having a blast with it so far. And I agree, it hasn’t disappointed me yet!
Happy for you Misti! Looking forward to going out on some shoots with you.
Yes, I can’t wait! I’ve got some fun ideas. 😊
I am surprised you were not getting good images in your work with the d7000. With the pixel density with a crop sensor it is equivalent to a 32 megapixel on a full frame. I am happy for you, enjoy your new camera.
I was getting good enough images with my D7000, but felt it was time to advance my gear. I’ve sure enjoyed the D850 this year! 😊
Good to see someone excited opening a new camera box 😀, love getting new camera gear esp if it feel familiar. Happy Shooting

I still love my d7000. I have tried the r7, 100-500, z6 II, d500 and still go back to the d7000 but I am seriously thinking of getting a d850 :) Mirrorless has so many quirks especially rolling shutter.
The D7000 is a great camera! It was my constant companion for about 10 years. 😁
My best photos are on a D7000. I will say I purchased a Z 8 and rolling shutter isn't noticeable with how I use it. Also it's an amazing piece of hardware if you have a camera store nearby I would recommend you go to one and try it.
Yup, the D7000 had imho, the best APS-C sensor. Unfortunately I hated the AF.
I've a D800 wich I bought used in good condition , a brilliant camera 35mp. I also use a D7200 📷👍
I agree with you on upgrading to mirrorless
I have moved to the D850, from a D7200. I am pleased to have moved. All the best to you on your photography journey. 😊
Thanks so much! It looks like you a made a similar move up in gear… do you feel like it’s leveled-up your photography, too?
I’m glad you found my video helpful, John! It’s an exciting decision to be able to make, for sure. I’ll be interested to hear which one you land on.
As a D850 owner I can personally tell you that you will love it. Best of luck.
Thanks so much, Tony! I had a chance to take it out on a Photo Adventure yesterday to test out the new-to-me features. I have to say… I am LOVING it!
I had a D850 and it’s the best DSLR out there. You will love the photos you’ll get from it 😍
I’m sure loving it so far! 😊
Seeing you so exited, make me so happy. New gear day always make me smile and happy :)
Enjoy your new camera :)
New gear days are definitely fun days! 😊
Good luck on the hunt for your perfect camera! I’ve really been enjoying the D850, no regrets at all.
@@lovethatshotadventures I have never even used a autofocus film SLR let alone a DSLR, as I use the old Nikon F2 which was launched way back in 1971 😳
@@FART-REPELLENT My first experience with photography was with my Dad’s film camera from the 70s. Still have it, too!
I LOVE my D850! It is a dream camera for me and it is amazing how prices have come down. I have no need to ever upgrade it!
We have the same way of thinking, Don! I’m loving the D850 more and more every day.
So Great to hear that from somebody today 😊
Everybody just wants to upgrade rather than enjoy the gear they have 🙈
I think that a D850 is all you ever need to become a Great photographer.
It is just a great camera.
One D850 in my area is for sale and has 850,000 shoots with original shutter.
I called the Seller just to ask if it is really original shutter. He confirmed 😂
Amazing 😊
I shoot both Nikon DSLRs ( D7000, D610, D750, D850) and Mirrorless (z5 and Z6 ii)
It doesn't hurt to go mirrorless given that you can always use all of your F mount lenses via the FTZ adapter. It just broadens your perspective and mirrorless works like an Automatic car ( vs. stick shift )
I will probably continue to use DSLR because there's a certain character to these old F mount AFS -G lenses that the Z lenses are unable to give. I was a Mirrorless snob for years until I finally realized the advantages it can give you
Sorry, but mirrorless with Nikon is garbage. I'll bet you $10,000 my D850 can take photos of people more accurately than a Z9.
I’ll be interested to hear which camera you land on.
go for D780 which good of both world.
Showing up with the D850 is game on (not that the others are bad) as it's an amazing camera. I shoot full manual besides autofocus and have distortion control on.

Gratz on the D850!!! Those 50mb RAW's are going to need another hard drive!

Greetings to Germany! Thanks so much! I hope you’re enjoying your new camera, isn’t that dynamic range amazing?!
Awesome! I have a very similar experience. In 2023, I upgraded to the D850 from the D7000. I went with the Nikkor 200-500mm for bird photography. I bought the Cotton Carrier chest holster to carry the 200-55mm. I can't wait to get the 14-24mm!
How cool! How are you liking the D850 so far? I’m blown away by the clarity and color it’s able to capture.
@Love that Shot I am loving it! Large photo prints look great!
I started with the Sony a6300 and i upgraded to the a7iv when it came out. I wish I would have started with a DSLR, but trust me I will get my hands on this D850. Really love the robustness of it, the big girthy body.
It is a beast and I’m loving it!
@@lovethatshotadventures hope to see more content of you with it. Keep it up !
You make some really great points. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent choice. I'm making the slow transition to the Z system but I'm still favouring my D500 and D7200 (as I also have F lenses that are still valuable). I mainly shoot sports and some limited events work. I'm beginning to experience why many still refer the DSLRs.
Thanks for your comment! I imagine down the road I’ll want to dip my toe into mirrorless as well. For now, I’m really enjoying playing with the D850!
The camera looks amazing ,I'm really happy for you & wish you every success with your photography .
Thanks, Julian!
I just upgraded from a d800 and d810 to a d850. ❤
I also wont miss the built-in flash from the d8 series. When shooting wide it was useless.
Congrats on the upgrade, too!
Not only the camera is expensive... the lenses are often times 20-50% more expensive...
Best camera I’ve ever owned. Recently replaced it with a Z9 but I still can’t part ways with my D850
That’s what tipped me over toward the D850… so many photographers say it’s the best camera they have. How do you like the mirrorless side of things?
@@lovethatshotadventures The main reasons I moved to the Z system was for eye-tracking and for the near elimination of chromatic aberration with Z lenses.
@@heyheyleina3366 you mean the eyebrow tracking? The Z9 is the worst mirrorless camera you can actually spend money on. Better off with the canon R8, or a Sony, than a Z9. Only worse cameras than a Z9 is the Z7ii and Z6ii.
Congratulations I used D200 from 2007 until 2013 than the change to D800 still using that body !
Congrats… I went from the 810 and finally saved up enough for the D850…. It just came in from Japan…. HAPPY shooting 🌺👍

With your new camera, I wish you to take beautiful photos and collect wonderful memories. Thanks, I sure am!
I am thinking of getting Nikon D850 right now. I have a Nikon D780.
These are great tips, I really appreciate it!
Thanks so much for your comment, you make some good points, and glad you enjoyed the video!
Right decision indeed 😊❤
Good choice.. I use the 850 alot. I use the lumix G-9 alot. For a large print or portrait work I use my Hasselblad 503cx.
To me every kit has its place for every project.
Just have fun that is the way to deliver your best image. GRINS
Thanks so much for the tip. I’ve been having so much fun with the d850 this year!
Not a problem on film)
I would return that D850, and exchange it for a Z7ii and adapt your existing zooms.

Thanks so much for your comment, glad you're enjoying my videos! 😊
Quantum leap? Really? Please elaborate. I've seen reviews where some people claim that D850 pictures look better than those taken with the Z8. Thanks
I agree with you entirely on the mirrorless. Enjoy it the D850. No instagram account?

Make sure the firmware is up to date [1.30, but at least 1.20] and then get CF Express Type B cards instead of XQD. XQD was a proprietary card format, owned by Sony but they didn't even use it. Nikon and a few others did. CF Express is an open format, and is the 'standard' for the foreseeable future. The card readers are cheaper since the XQD card readers have to be licensed from Sony. Delkin has a CF-Express[B] & SD combo card reader which is perfect for the D850/Z6II/Z7II.
Thanks for the tips, very helpful! I really appreciate it.
You won’t be disappointed D850 great camera
Definitely a great choice. I have a D7500 and I prefer it to the Sony A7111. It just feels great in the hands and the menu makes sense. But the D850 is the ultimate AND you can use the original Nikon lenses. The Z lenses are nice but EXPENSIVE!!
Great purchase. I’m looking for one NOW! lol
It’s a great time to be looking at the D850… prices keep coming down, which is awesome!
