  • Most of the footage is from the 2022 herring spawn, but there are a few clips from years past as well. Each year in late winter, the herring start to arrive on the West Coast of the island. They congregate in deeper waters and their arrival attracts humpback whales, sea lions, orcas, and all kinds of birds to the area. Usually in late February or early March, the massive schools of herring will enter shallower waters and one day they decide to spawn. There are so many fish spawning that it turns the water white. A single female can lay tens of thousands of eggs. After the spawn, grey whales move into the shallows and feed on the eggs that were laid by the herring. This is one of the reasons that herring lay so many eggs... most of them do not make it to adulthood.

I appreciate the drone footage, allowing us to see the whales' behavior without disturbing them. Beautiful video, thanks!
The still shots at the end were very lovely, too.
