    Ok, I wonder if Liszt deliberately composed seemingly impossible to play pieces, except for an elite few, like Valentina. Holy cow!! 👏👏🎹

    • @quarkonium3795

      Yes, mostly because he was one of those elite few. In fact, many times he had to rewrite pieces because he had accidentally made them too difficult to play for anyone but himself

    • @tommywong7748
      @tommywong7748 3 роки тому +12

      @@AKJY I understand how you don't like his clown face, so my solution is to just turn around or close our eyes and not look at the video. If we only focus on the sound, Lang Lang completely wins in terms of clarity, dynamic range, articulation, tempo, articulations, phrasing and overall interpretation in this piece. Just compare the trills at the beginning of the piece and see how exciting and intriguing Lang Lang makes them sound. Lisitsa's interpretation, imo, is rather the erratic interpretation here. At 3:19, she ignores a lot of musical notations such as the rests, slurs and staccato (phrasing) that is written on the score and plays all chords/double stops in legato, linking them all up with pedal. From 6:46 to 6:54, the contrast in dynamic is too small, it sounds like mf vs ff while it's supposed to be p vs ff. Half way through at 6:55, she decides to rush through the rest of the piece all to the end, and don't forget that at this moment the section is marked "elegantemente", meaning elegantly, which cannot be expressed through rushing. At 9:43, the score marks "animato", but her playing, from my *subjective* perspective (I need to stress that this point is entirely subjective), her playing sounds weak and not very energetic. It's like I am tired and I don't even have the energy to press the keys but I still want to practice. At 10:37 to 10:45, she, once again, completely ignores all the markings on the score. The dynamic marking p at the beginning of the phrase, rinforzando at the chromatic scales, diminuendo at the end of the sequence, all these that are done by Lang Lang disappears in her performance. She doesn't even try to phrase the sequences differently to make it sound interesting and show her own interpretation. And at one of the very climaxes of the piece 11:35 to 11:40, she decides to play it in roughly mp. Those octaves are even softer and weaker than the section that builds up to this climax. Heck, it's even softer than the very first chord of the piece. It sounds like Don Giovanni dies because of a chronic respiratory disease rather than falling into the hell. And meanwhile, the score uses the marking "Grave" and ff. I might be able to point out more but to sum up Lisitsa simply rushes through the whole piece and lack the expression required as a pianist while Lang Lang does show his expression and personal interpretation in his performance of this piece. I am personally not a big fan of both of them but when it comes to this piece Lang Lang's performance is much superior to her performance imo. Her interpretation of this whole piece is literally the opposite of what it's meant to be. Not to mention her chromatic scales are sloppy and the rhythm is uneven because she attempts to play fast (and it's not rubato because it's like a few notes sticking together to form unregular groups of notes) and some of her staccatos/staccatissimos are somehow slightly lengthened and doesn't sound like staccato/sstaccatissimo, such as the quiet part in 6:46 to 6:54 (but that's just what I hear and I might be wrong).
      Here is the comparison of the above moments I mentioned:
      Valentina Lisitsa (V) 3:19 vs Lang Lang (L) ua-cam.com/video/azo0g3ESENY/v-deo.html
      V 6:46 vs L ua-cam.com/video/azo0g3ESENY/v-deo.html
      V 6:55 vs L ua-cam.com/video/azo0g3ESENY/v-deo.html
      V 9:43 vs L ua-cam.com/video/azo0g3ESENY/v-deo.html
      V 10:37 vs L ua-cam.com/video/azo0g3ESENY/v-deo.html
      V 11:35 vs L ua-cam.com/video/azo0g3ESENY/v-deo.html
      Obviously I could be wrong on so many things because after all I'm not very good at music and I don't really have a music degree. So if you think there's anything wrong with my comment or there are anything Lisitsa does better than Lang Lang in this piece (except not making clown face because we all know that) please feel free to tell or disagree with me. If you really dislike Lang Lang's clown face you can check out Okada's rendition ua-cam.com/video/JI6JfJXcUjU/v-deo.html or Tiffany Poon's one ua-cam.com/video/chGWf80fSAc/v-deo.html though Poon's one doesn't give you the feeling as strong as Okada's and Lang Lang's because she was just 14 when she performed this. But it's still much more lively than Lisitsa's.

      @Ling Ling Yes, that's why I timestamped it! Check out the same part on my recording, I feel like it's a bit better.

      @Enescu Agreed, Mr. Hu's performance is inarguably superior to this.
