I played Secret Agent, before Crystal Caves - both only Episode 1 out of the 3 episodes made for each game. Loved them. Those, and Commander Keen, I played A LOT ...
Guess what: same here, they were shareware. But then I found out that somehow, through quite obscure means, it was still possible to purchase the full games! So I have played all episodes now.
This was probably the year I was introduced to PC gaming as well, we must be around the same age I've always figured, 31 for me. I remember in 90 or 91 my mom's awesome boyfriend at the time (who she made the mistake of not marrying) was the one who always convinced my mom or talked her into them buying a PC and all the latest game consoles, and we had A LOT of consoles and games for PC. Leisure Suit Larry 1 the VGA remake was one game we owned I remember watching him play but certain parts I had to leave the room for lol, also Wolfenstein 3d of course.. many other games.
I had memories of which I did not know if they were true or imagination. So I was searching for DOS-games a really long time until I finally found crystal caves. I just then realized the memories were real and I did not dream or imagine things. Such a great feeling.
I just came across this channel because of my love for the old DOS games. I've played a lot of the games you posted here but I would like to mention a few more that were some of my favorites. Jazz the Jackrabbit, Jill of the Jungle, Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure, Llamatron, and don't forget about Full Throttle, Under A Killing Moon, Rex Nebular and Dark Seed. I am now setting up a new (OLD) system, and will be revisiting these old DOS games again.
I was born in 87 and these games brought back some lost memories of playing these at my relatives house as a young kid. probably didnt know what i was doing back then anyway. Great vid as always!! thumbs up
It's always amazing to me to see the vast difference in graphic quality and style. Even over the course of a year for the same company. Good work on the video!
Great video! And thank you for doing it with the correct aspect ratio! Too many people don't take that into consideration when they make dos games videos.
@@sassymenses yes but can you talk about 32-bit era in 1985 when i386 was introduced. Motorola 68000 also had a 32-bit instruction set, but can you also tell it was a fully 32-bit processor belonging to 32-bit era? For me there are three main eras: 8-bit (early home computers), 16-bit (amiga, atari st, pc dos) and 32-bit (windows era). I know I am simplifying here...
@@spearPYN ok I got your point clearly. But still I definitely see a straight separation between "classic" 16-bit DOS games and 32-bit DOS/4GW / CWSDPMI games. Dont forget that there were a lot of games for DOS after Win95 release, meant to be executed under Win95 DOS-Box (just cuz DirectX aka GameSDK was not so popular/trustworthy). F.e. MDK. DOS MDK doesn't really look like a typical 16-bit game, does it?..
Isn't it amazing how DIFFERENT these games are? In both their visual style and gameplay. It doesn't seem like Street Rod 2 and Monuments of Mars should be from the same year as say Police Quest 3 and Another World. What a time to be alive.
Street Rod 2 uses EGA graphics and Monuments of Mars has the even more outdated CGA. Most games were now using VGA in '91 since by then VGA was now standard and mainstream. At this point most games using older graphics formats in 1991 were companies on a low budget or those experimenting with Adaptive Tile Refresh such as Id Software, in the case of the Commander Keen series and Duke Nukem, a trick not available on VGA, meaning that company continued using EGA as late as 1993 with Dangerous Dave's Risky Rescue. I'm not entirely clear why Monuments of Mars is CGA but apparently you can't run the game on a 5150. Crosscountry Canada is also from 1991 and uses CGA but to be fair it was originally ported on the Apple II in 1986 and they didn't bother to update the graphics when ported on the PC five years later so the graphics weren't much better than the Apple II original.
Police Quest 3 was so hard for a 12y old non-english speaking child :( But man I loved that game. Still got the box. And the intro theme by Jan Hammer (Miami Vice) - just dope on Sound Blaster FM synth.
Interesting how after seeing this video, I'm concentrating on and seeing the pixels of a modern computer. Looking back I think those big pixels, trying to represent something with a few of those blocks, had a certain charm to it.
Less graphical fidelity leaves more to the imagination. And our mind can sometimes do a better job than an artist. Not to mention that some things look less interesting the more detail you give them. Like the monsters in DOOM vs DOOM 2016.
Played most of these games later on! :) By 1991, I was a student of computer programming and was still playing Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (the action game) on a Schneider Euro PC 2 at high school ;) Thanks for this ;)
Fantastic nostalgic content. Played a handful of these games in the day, but not too many. This is my first time learning Sim Ant was SVGA on PC. I assumed same visuals as on the Super NES. Looks like it was way more playable on PC...
Falcon 3.0 got me into config.sys and autoexec.bat optimizing ... DOS=HIGH,UMB and DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.SYS RAM FRAME=E000 after HIMEM.SYS so I could DEVICEHIGH and LOADHIGH the rest - because that game wanted like 615k of free BASE memory to start !!

Very interesting era of PC gaming. You can see some of the games are in EGA and some are in VGA. Some artists clearly had no idea what to do with the extra colors. If you are wondering what the risk was going for the VGA, it is like having an exclusive game for the new generation of "gaming system" except the market was only 1% what it is today.
les manley in los l.a. I was looking for that game. Thanks so much!!! I could not finish this game . Last chapter. almost 20 years ago. I hope someone played this. I want see end of the this game. ))) wohooo
Space Quest IV was about the coolest thing on a PC back then. And I didn't even care much for adventure games. Awesome graphics and full of laughs. Out of this World was just incredible. Hey i'm looking a game played in 1990-1992 Could be commodore or amiga game, I don't remember very well. The character in the game was wearing a fez (or a different hat like this) and wearing a shoe that looked like aladdin's shoe (maybe a sandal from ancient cultures) There were zombies and skeletons in the game and if I remember correctly there was a dark background. I couldn't give much information but maybe it can be found
Hey @Dos Nostalgia, I don't suppose you'd know the name of a game that had its floppy disk art as some white man (like actually white), or some white ghost or something holding a flashlight underneath its face? The colours of the art were just red, white, and black. I think it was some kind of horror game. I checked if it was Alone in the Dark but it's not. Can you think of any other horrors game that have that kind of game cover artwork? The art work looks similar to The Evil Within 2 (too young of a game) and Prisoner of Ice, but the colours don't match just red, white, and black. Thanks.
So many memories, expecially with Crystal Caves and The Simpson's game. Please somebody tell me if knows the name of a game with a pirate dog (or cat), the graphic was awesome and the gameplay too.

Thanks.
Hmmm.... Idk. Sounds a bit like Personal Nightmare, but it probably isn't. Do you remember anything about the actual game at all?
The year i was born :D
COMMANDER KEEN
I specifically requested a Willy Beamish haircut as a little kid. It was the worst haircut I've ever had in my life.
I had no idea the simpsons aracde game was also on the PC/MS Dos
These were good retro games 😌😁🎮🕹.
So many memories, expecially with Crystal Caves and The Simpson's game. Please somebody tell me if knows the name of a game with a pirate dog (or cat), the graphic was awesome and the gameplay too.
Claw/Captain Claw (Monolith Productions, 1997)
@@dosnostalgic Thank you very much! Looking for it on the web, I see it is a CD game and I can't explain how I could play it from a floppy disk. Anyway, your answer was really appreciated, thank you again.
I feel like Fight Night was the first game to succeed 4D boxing.
-91, year of Commander Keens :P
That's the remake of Larry 1 showing there. Pretty sure that came out later in the decade.
It came out in 91. The original was from 1987.
