I'd gotten so accustomed to seeing her as an MP, I'd forgotten how incomparably gorgeous she was. Fifty years ago, after having seen her performance as Elizabeth R on PBS, I wrote her a gushingly sycophantic fan letter, found her address somewhere in the library and sent it off. Much to my surprise, she replied. What a thrill. It's one of the enduring tragedies of my life to have lost her letter. Goodbye, Glenda. You were a wonderful woman, a brilliant artist and brave champion of justice and freedom. Thank you.
This was the show we nearly didn't have as it was made not long after Eric's heart bypass. They were so popular that even the thought of no Eric and Ernie over the festive season was enough to ruin most peoples' Christmas. Bless them both.
@@GFSTaylor Yes, my dad had a similar operation and he was never quite the same again. When you think the ill health Eric endured just to make us laugh.

Dame Glenda had the ability to tackle anything she'd handle in life. I was just a toddler when she won "Women in Love"; she is the last of the surviving acting Oscar winners from 1970 to pass yesterday (06/15/2023). My sympathies to her son upon her passing and other family members. She will be missed. R. I. P. Dame Glenda.
“But I’m a woman!” Exclaimed the actress who would play a triumphant King Lear in her 80s. God, she was great. Brave too, appearing with Morcombe and Wise. They worked so well together. Here and on their comedy series. Their Cleopatra sketch is still brilliant!
Watching this after losing those incomparable comedians and last year sublime Glenda I feel so emotional - we were so lucky to have seen them at all, and to have seen them together was bliss.
I was watching a film last week 'The Triple Echo' with Oliver Reed. Saw her once at Blackheath station, spoke to her, she was very nice indeed. God bless her, XXX and David Frost, Morecombe and Wise too.
Just be thankful M&W graced the world with their genius. So little of what we thought was funny stands the test of time, but thankfully Morcambe and Wise do 🤣
Shame for those who don't get M&W, they just looked like a couple of likeables winging it but every step, every move down to the flick of an eyebrow was considered and rehearsed until it looked that natural, I wouldn't wish the world we have now on them but miss them all the same

Agreed, but the Honours System was very snobbish in those days. Some people moaned when they got the OBE in 1976. Can you imagine if they had been made Sirs? They'd probably have asked The Queen to do the show. ❤
Those were the days when ‘event’ television was part of cultural life. Nothing was more of an ‘event’ than the annual M&W Christmas show at a time when there were only 3 TV channels.

A great episode from their late 1970s and early 1980s ITV series which I've got on DVD it featured a running gag with Des O'connor too trying to sing, the chair routine was done on a BBC episode in the early 1970s with Roy Castle, and Eric, was the one that went up and down, I've got the entire BBC series including surviving episodes of series one from 1968, and six VHS Tapes of their Two Of A Kind ITV series from the early 1960s apart from this Christmas special I've also got on the same DVD their first ITV special from 1978 plus two other Christmas specials and their first ITV series for ITV post BBC which includes many routines they done for the BBC series and throughout their BBC series and ITV series are all the appearances of Peter Cushing, with his not being paid running gag in which we see him finally get his payment in one of the 1980s ITV Christmas specials, I've also got their three films from the 1960s plus their final made for ITV television film Night Train To Murder, screened after Eric, died along with The Two Ronnies' they were amongst the best comedy double acts on British television
Why on earth did Thames TV chose David Frost as host of this special. David Frost was the kiss of death to LWT in 1968 and TV AM in 1983. He was pure sleeping draught. Des O'Connor should have hosted it.
Choosing David Frost as host was just pure nonsense. He never appeared on any of their previous shows and seemed to be in another world during this Christmas edition. At least Des knew the two well, and took their mick taking with good humour, Frost was just a non entity.
Thought you would be aware Des O'Connor was under contract to the BBC in 1979 and would have been unable to present this as was Parkinson and Harty so that didn't really leave any other big enough names for this
@@tomhaskett5161 Apparently in Part 1 he was dressed in a normal suit and Morecambe and Wise asked why he was not dressed up like them, so he changed, however the gag was Morecambe and Wise changed into normal suits for Part 2.
Frost not very good at this interview because he doesn't have same sense of humour like Glenda and Eric and Erny do. David would take some waking. So funny. David could play sleepy or dopy in Snow White Brilliant singing!
