A ragamuffin is someone dressed in rags, the English name for the war is pretty accurate.
But it wasn't because they were dressed in rags, that is a popular misconception. The name came from how liberals from the south were referenced way before the war.

It's not charcoal briquettes, it's "Charque", A kind of beef jerky that was produced heavily in the region. It was a vital commodity at the time before refrigeration.
Rio Grande do Sul was being heavily taxed on it, while the rest of the country started buying it from Argentina and elsewhere.
RGS was also salty because of their huge participation in most of Brazil's wars as conscripts and the constant border disputes with the Spanish colonies made them super militaristic and ready to fight for any reason.
This prompted the landowners, army and iluminist intelectuals to begin a revolt against the Brazilian Monarchy. The point of the revolt was to turn what they could of Brazil into a collection of Republics in a sort of Federation. This is why your War Goal in the game as Piratini is annexing Santa Catarina. It actually also broke up from Brazil and became the "Julian Republic".
This revolt lasted for 10 years.

Who fled from Napoleon was Joao VI of Portugal, Pedro I was his son and declared the Independence of Brazil (his heart came here this year, the 200th year of the Brazilian independence, its conserved in formol), this episode is funny because its probably the only time a ruler declared independence from himself (he was also the heir of Portugal, he would inherit Brazil with or without independence).
After political struggles in Portugal, Pedro I prefered going to help his motherland while keeping his son, Pedro II, here in Brazil, to rule when he came to age (18, but they made a coup so he could be crowned at 15 to avoid more instability).

Slavery in Brazil was abolished by his daughter in 1889 and she was the reason he had to abolish it and free the slaves
Plus Deodoro was a insignificant minority who didn't get a majority of support of the Republic and the Brazilians were against the Republic, but they didn't fight back because our emperor abdicated due to how unpopular he got with the military after the Paraguayan War in the 1860s-1870s (I think) and they had different opinions of the emperor since a ton of people died in the war (especially Paraguay, who lost almost the entire male population and it's dictator had to send women, old people and children to the war but still didn't stop the Brazilians)

Honestly, Brazil's strat and in fact most underdeveloped "big" countries is to join a Custom Union, preferably the French and join in their upswing in industrialization. Brazil's advantages comes when rubber becomes an important input and I'd argue that out of all South American land, the most desirable for conquest is Venezuela and Bolivia for that sweet sweet oil in the late game, so puppet and Annex early.
By joining the Custom Union you'll avoid the worst of shortages, specially in basic inputs as food, coal, iron and wood, then you can improve the standard of living quickly by focusing on the bottlenecks of industries, mainly clothes, furniture and glass. Also, focus on the colonization game in South America early, as the southern tip is amazing and RUSH the "Liberalization" mission and then in the "New Colossus" for the flat extra migration to the whole country.
Just be careful to actually build these basic inputs before leaving the custom union. With this strat in the 1870's Brazil was already the biggest GDP and 3rd world power by prestige and have the highest migration attraction the world for almost the whole country. In the 1900's I have double the GDP of second place.

"He is one of the reasons slavery was ousted in brazil [...]"
    It's actually quite the oposite
His monarchy is the main reason Brazil was THE LAST country in the americas to ban slavery.
Why? Well, the landowners were the main group supporting the emperor. To keep their support and mantain the monarchy, he kept slavery going for as long as possible, despite international pressure to outlaw it. But eventually the british were able to force the imperial family to ban slavery. And a few years later, as expected, a coup ended the monarchy and started the republic.

  • @lucasithegreat2711

Fun fact, during the real Ragamuffin War that happened in Brazil from 35 to 45, the rebels against the Empire never got the support of Rio Grande do Sul's Capital, the city of Porto Alegre. So they established their Capital in the city of Piratini, hence the reason the Rebel State they formed was called the Republic of Piratini (or just Piratini) and not the Republic of Rio Grande do Sul, the latter was always a province of the Empire and never joined the Rebel cause. Now the actual fun fact: So because of this gesture of loyalty to the Empire, the Emperor Pedro II gave the City of Porto Alegre the tile of "Loyal and Valorous City of Porto Alegre" in 1841, for remaining loyal to the Brazilian Empire.

I think the best strat as Brazil is to declare on Bolivia (lots of coal, sulfur and later oil) as soon as you deal with the internal wars, it is easier to fight them before they form Peru-Bolivia. After that you should focus on Peru (lots of gold and some oil from the start) and Chile (lots of gold, coal, sulfur and some oil from the start). After that you can do whatever you want but Venezuela (lots of oil) or Guyana (a LOT of gold) is far worthier than Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay (I usually let those for later because they don't have any important resources and they can colonize the rest of South America for me)

Another tip, "J" sound in portuguese sounds the same as in french. It's totally different than spanish, english and the eastern european languages, and yep, your "Carajas" sounded like a slang for "penis" in portugues when you spoke "j" as in some slavic language or in greek, and sounded like the same slang for "penis" in spanish when you pronounciated the "j" in spanish.
I really don't know how your romanians pronounciate "j", if it is also the same as in french and portuguese or it's the same as the soft g sound in italian which is the same as the "j" in english, or if it's the "j" in the slavic languages which sounds like an "i" for all the romance languages.

He was beloved by the people and, I don't have to say, but he wasn't much for outlawing slavery, after that we decided the best way to go was indentured servitude by way of immigration in the South. But he was progressive other than the slavery question

In my opinion the vasall system sucks.
I played ethiopia and was a vasall of france. I started a rebellion against france, because they had a rebellion in the mainland and i lost the connection of the france market.
In the rebellion i was still in the france market and this f***ed me so up, that my entire country just died.
They should change this system. If you rebell you are in your own market and not in the market of your overlord.

Imagine believing that publics schools benefit the poor people... When in reality a private education system would be way more efficient

So you just click on as many provinces as you want to colonize? Not limited by colonists or anything?
Oh, you have to defend them?

"Shit in a nice package" like public schools. I can't imagine why government run schools would teach you that the government is the best at running things.

You talking about Pedro the Second makes me wonder why we Brazilians are still insisting in a broken republic with every president trying to be worst than its predecessor. They should all aim to be at least half of what Pedro the Second was instead.

infrastructure only deals with market matters when you decentralize your economic buildings. if you stack everything in one tile, that one tile won't need market access. I'd suggest you try out a one tile minor nation, and ignore 'access to market' issues.

It's fun that a Afro-brazilian revolt occurred in Bahia in 1835. The Male Revolt tried to create a Muslim State with Sharia in Bahia

Small correction Ludi: Pedro II spent his last days in Paris, until his death in 1891 (3 years after the republican coup).
