    -- Gen 1 Crit Rates: www.smogon.com/rb/articles/cr...
-- Crit rate is determined by dividing base speed by 512
-- High crit rate moves determine their rate by dividing base speed by 64

The spooky story from the guy in Celadon plays on the name of Curse itself: In Japanese, the words for “curse” and “slow” sound the same (のろい “noroi”), so ghost-types use the “curse” meaning and all others use the “slow” meaning. They couldn’t translate the pun into English obviously, so the humor of the story of a kid thinking their bike was *slowing* because it was *cursed* kinda got lost.

I think the most nostalgic parts of these videos and your stories is hearing how you learned and heard things at school. I think SO MANY of us relate that immensely. Haha I had to get that test as well and it confirmed I was literally allergic to everything. I had to get my test because after camping one time my face was fully swollen and so bad I couldn't see out of 1 eye it was usually bad but not like that. Then I had to get allergy shots for a while until my parents got tired of taking me. In case you are wondering I got this test for my daughter done and now they just test the blood instead of testing it on you so it's much better these days.

Like, part of it explains the badge boost glitch in a way as of no one ever heard of it and is unfamiliar with game mechanics, so it’s simple to understand. Or like the Bide attack being affected by status conditions. Or other things you have encountered or shown in your various videos. It would be really enjoyable and useful to have them all to reference in one video. I felt that Slowpoke Well anecdote on such a personal level! When my brother and I were little, our mother found two Gameboys, Pokemon Yellow, Gold, and Silver, and Pokemon Pinball at a car-boot market. We were so excited to finally have the games after watching so much of the cartoon, but we had no idea how to play them.
The thing is, we didn't know how to leave the house. It didn't click that the doormat was an exit to the room so we thought the games were broken. We were trapped. Disappointed and angry, we ended up just watching the opening cutscenes or playing Pinball.
One afternoon I discovered that walking into a wall makes a funny thud noise. I started walking into every spot on the walls until eventually I stumbled out the front door and our lives changed forever.

I really like your personal stories about playing Pokémon when you were younger. :)
They remind me of my own experience I had with Gen 1 and 2. Especially your story about not being able to read ...
For example: I remember playing Pokémon Yellow when I was 10 years old and since I'm from Germany, I had ... well, a german copy, of course. But there was the trainer class called "Teenager" and since it's an english word I never heard before, I always read "Tee-Nager", which means something like "tea gnawer" or "tea rodent" in German. I imagined that these trainers liked to gnaw on their tea cups, which didn't make sense, but I didn't know better and just took it as a fact... xD

This was a joy to watch. Aerodactyl deserved some love. And you aren´t the only one not finding certain entrances or caves in the gen 2 games. When I first played them I was so confused, that after a hard battle for the last batch I wouldn´t be rewarded. Instead the leader ran away ... and for some reason I have missed the point that she left for the cave behind the gym.
This led to a young boy very confused running all around the whole region to find the gym leader. It took me the better part of a week to find that one cave. It simply never occured to my that there is a cave behind that gym. Fun times all around!

Good video again for the fossils. And the little animations for the pokemon on the side are good too. Aerodactyl seems happy that it's doing well in his battles when he wins and determined to win while battling. The anecdotes were really nice too. I like hearing people's stories with pokemon. The Johto Region as a whole is very special to me and my favorite region because it's the region that I started pokemon in. When I was a little kid my parents got me a Gameboy Advanced and Pokemon Crystal for finishing my summer homework. My first ever pokemon was a Cyndaquil since my father helped me set up the game. I still have the original cartrage too for Crystal, just need to change the battery inside if I want to play it but I got it on the 3ds for Virtual Boy. Cyndaquil, Quilava, and Typhlosion have been my favorite starter line for years and I love when I get the chance to have one along for the ride. I even have two Cyndaquil plushies for myself. One of them is a normal plush that you would get. It's one of the plushies that came with the plush poke ball, in Cyndaquil's case I think it was the repeat ball. The other one I have is one that I bought myself at a convention. This one is a hand crocheted Cyndaquil. It's really special to me since I don't normally get hand-made plushies for myself. I just wanted to get the little guy though since it was my first pokemon ever. Long story not so short, Johto is like a second home to me in the pokemon series. Please keep up the good work.

I didn't have a favorite team of 6, I had a huge roster of pokémon which I switched between as-needed, and I spent hours grinding to keep as many of my pokémon at a decent enough level, so that none would fall too much behind in case I would need them on my team in the future. The result was that I had lots and lots of pretty under-leveled pokémon. This was felt HARD in the sudden level-jump between Jasmine and her lvl 35 Steelix, and then Clair and her lvl 40 Kingdra, and then the whole E4 + champion with lvl 40-50.
I had managed to make it as far as I had because most of the time I simply had more pokémon on my team than what the opponent had, but when I came to the E4, which suddenly all had 5+ pokémon, which was all at equal or higher level than my highest leveled pokémon, the E4 was this seemingly impossibly difficult wall for me. when I first faced will, he simply sweeped me. Most of my team was simply outsped and one-shot by his Xatu using Psychic. It took me like 2-3 of my team to chip-down his lead, and then his next pokémon would just keep using psychic to do SO MUCH DAMAGE..
After tons of grinding in Victory Road I finally managed to just barely beat Will. It was at this point I learned that you can't go back and heal and then take on the next trainer, how I'd managed to get through hard parts previously, but that I had to beat several fully stacked elite trainers in a row! It was at this point in the game that I learned that maybe buying potions to heal and restore your party between battles was a good idea (previously my thinking was: "Why waste money on potions when healing at the centers are free")
It took me so much grinding training, and my whole bank of money spent on buying potions and Full Heals to finally beat the pokémon league, but the moment was absolutely magical, as it was the first pokémon game I ever actually beat

You're not the only one who played video games before they could read! Though I'll be showing my age here, I learned to read a LITTLE through playing Dragon Warrior for the NES. My dad had to tell me what weird symbol blobs meant heal, so that may have ended up being one of my first words I could read. I also started learning math without realizing it as I saw damage numbers. I also remember i liked magic damaging spells, so I think I started learning those too. At least, it logically would make sense as I don't see why I'd have wizards in my party if I didn't know how to use their spells.

About Ice Path, I had the same issue for a long time. I ended up having some kid at church do it for me and I was so thankful. Today, I don't have any problems with these kinds of puzzles. The Myst series taught me how to see patterns and think several steps ahead. Thanks to my dad for having me play those.

I caught my first shiny in gold, a heracross from headbutting trees outside Littleroot Town. I had never seen heracross before and I don't recall it being used in any trainer fights, so I had no idea it was the "wrong" color or why it had those star when I sent it out into battle.

Yesterday, during your Gastly stream you and Matt were talking about the Ditto runs that Matt and Jrose have done. If you decide to do one, I recommend you watch Jrose's video first. He found a very helpful glitch.
When transformed, if you level up mid fight, you'll get Ditto's stats back. That could be helpful should you go up against someone who uses a bad Pokemon to start with. The won't help with trainers like Surge, since he only has one Pokemon in Yellow. I don't know how helpful that will be in the endgame, but in the early and mid game, it should be pretty handy.
I have no idea if the glitch works in gen 2 and beyond though. As far as I know, it's only a gen 1 thing

I feel you dude. Pokemon crystal was my first game in the series, and at the time i got the game i don't even think i could fully read and/or write my native tongue, so english was a no go. the game became more about trial and error than strategy, and who even knew what STAB and type effectiveness was.
at school we had this ritual where everybody would use Fury Cutter against the rivals gastly after the 2nd gym, because it was the only move we knew that would hit it, and we did it religiously because we thought that it was the best solution even if our starters had water gun/ember.
while i did manage to find fly, i never got to experience the post game fully in my crystal game because i couldn't do the power plant quest. there was only 1 guy who had managed to get past it and he didn't remember what he did to progress the quest so the rest of us were stuck lol. Oh also that reminds me that there was also only one guy who knew the path to Lugia, and he was a bully in school so it was a coinflip if he'd help you or kick your ass.
Also i killed suicune by mistake lol. forgot to save before engaging it, and had no pokeballs. however, Raikou is my fav of the three beasts, and zapdos is my fav bird.
well this was a real blurb but honestly they are all good memories.
edit: wow i just remembered my first league win. i was down to my starter (feraligatr) and lance was down to his aerodactyl. feraligatr was hurt badly from the dragonites and only had 1 move left, which was water gun. mind you i didn't know aerodactyls typing at the time, and as mentioned above i had no idea what STAB or supereffective moves were. i land the water gun and it either one or two shots it, and im just vibrating with excitement and joy while screaming at the top of my lungs. the next time i'd feel something close to the same was in gen 3 when capturing Rayquaza.

However, I do remember getting absolutely annihilated by the Elite 4 in Yellow and had the overwhelming feeling of "this game is easy as heck" for the second gen.

I remember not realizing that the red Gyarados was a shiny when I caught it as a kid. Thought it was simply just that, a red Gyarados and it was kinda explained at some point, it was red because the magikarp was evolved too quickly and under force, so it was red.
That was, until I caught my first shiny pokemon in the wild, a golden ratata in front of pallet town. This was in my silver edition. I called her Serenity and cherished her a lot, even though she was just a ratata.
