    Beautiful work. Only one bit of advice learned the hard way. When you build a closet to hide water pipes, make sure they don't interfere with the heating. I made this mistake and on a really cold day, the pipe burst. The solution was to use a louvered door that let the warm air in to prevent freezing.

    Eddie, when building the wall with the door in front of the electrical panel does it need to be build out farther then your standard 4 1/2 inch from the block wall so the door will be able to close?

    • @BasementFinishingMan

    Great video and lots of great ideas. I'd like to suggest that the stair railings at 13:09 may not meet code in many areas that follow the 2003 IRC.
    "311.5.6.2 Continuity. Handrails for stairways shall be continuous for the full length of the flight, from a point directly above the top riser of the flight to a point directly above lowest riser of the flight."
    The inspectors in my area, at least, are very specific about interpreting "continuous" to mean "without removing one's hand."
    I suppose opinions may vary! :-)

    • @BasementFinishingMan

      If your referring to the basement wall wrap that was existing, we just leave it behind the new framed walls untouched. It's good insulation, usually with an R-11 insulation rating we just don't mess with it. Hope this helps you. Good luck with your projects!

    Should the air supply ducts be insulated before they are framed in? What's your take on that?

    • @BasementFinishingMan
      @BasementFinishingMan  7 років тому +2

      We use an insulated "flex" heat feed line that requires no insulation. But...if your using uninsulated metal runs for your heat runs you should insulate...it really just depends on what type of feed-run material you are using Ben.
      Eddie

    • @benjaminu12
      @benjaminu12 7 років тому +2

      I was wondering about the existing main air supply trunk in the video that is wider... Not one of the feeds. It didn't look like you were insulating them.

    • @BasementFinishingMan
      @BasementFinishingMan  7 років тому +1

      These feed trunks in my videos are all an insulated duct-board type that has a fiberglass layer in place. These do not need any additional insulating.

    • @fixitwithzim
      @fixitwithzim 9 років тому +1

    Eddie I have a question I cant seem to get the same answer from many different builders. What is the correct "layering" for insulation and framing? I cant seem to get a common answer on where to put the vapor barrier (if at all), what type of insulation I should use for my basement walls. My house was built in the 50's, cinder block foundation, and i plan to have a water system track installed before i finish.

    • @BasementFinishingMan
      @BasementFinishingMan  8 років тому

      Hi Sarah! Use Drylock on the block walls before framing exterior walls. Then frame and insulate with R-13 batts w/ no vapor barrier. Vapor barriers cause more mold conditions than they have ever prevented.

    My ceiling is only 7' to the floor joists, so would you still recommend soffits for the ductwork? A soffit would mean a 6' ceiling in those areas. Also, doesn't finishing the ceiling trap the warm air in the basement rather than sending it to the floor above?

    • @BasementFinishingMan
      @BasementFinishingMan  8 років тому

      +Dan Olson Yes soffit the ductwork...they will be lower but it's the way to go! They will probably be 6'-4" or so when done. Yeah it keeps the basement warm and that's what you want! You don't want to lose your basement heat through the floor.
      Eddie

    • @danolson8458
      @danolson8458 8 років тому +1

      Okay. I have exposed brick in the upper floor, which doesn't retain heat as well so I've been using the basement heat to assist with heating the upper floor.

    Hey Eddie, do you have any youtube videos showing how you created that extended door jamb on the inward opening door?? The way I have mine framed out (before I saw this video) I have 3 inches of space all around the door which will have to be trimmed out like a picture frame! I think it's going to look very unprofessional and would rather use your technique. Hope you can help :/

    How are you Eddie, thank you for posting all the videos first of all! I would like to ask you if you can recommend me someone here in Canada (Vaughan, ON) to do my basement please (1600-1800 sq. ft.) Regards

      @BasementFinishingMan  8 років тому

      +P JC Hello...Your welcome! I wish I lived closer I would love to do it myself! Unfortunately I am not able to recommend anyone as far away from me as Vaughan, ON. I would recommend getting at least 3-4 estimates from reputable basement contractors or general remodeler's who have good track records and go from there...Make sure you personally inspect their work and speak directly to the past clients to get the real story about each contractor!
      Good luck with your finished basement project...I am always here if you want to run something by me!

      Hello Desola! I'm very sorry but I do not no anyone personally ion that area that I could recommend...being based out of Hershey PA we do not work with anyone that distance from our work territory. I would start by getting 3 or 4 estimates from reputable remodeling contractors in your area that specialize a part of their business in basement finishing. Good luck with your project!

    First tip Question - is that laminate flooring in a basement? seems scary for water

    • @BasementFinishingMan
      @BasementFinishingMan  8 років тому

      +john stempinski Yep! And it's made just basements and the higher than usual moisture levels and even an occasional "act of God" basement flooding scenario

    • @BasementFinishingMan
      @BasementFinishingMan  8 років тому

      It called Resilient and it's made by Shaw. They have a few different shades of color as well. You can get it at Lowes. Home Depot also has their brands of synthetic flooring as well which are very close to the Resilient model by Shaw.
      Thanks for tuning in to my basement channel John!
