  • Today we review the Atari 7800 Homebrew Baby Pac Man! It was originally done by a team over at Atariage led by PacManPlus and represents a lot of time and skill from the consoles most talented people. But does that make the game worth playing, or was it a lot of wasted time? Lets find out!
    If you want to download Baby Pac Man to play on your favorite emulator or flash cart then please grab it from the developer below. The alternative is to pay a kinds ransom on eBay!

    1. Bring awareness to Atari, especially the often ignored Tramiel and 7800 era
    2. Make sure the hardworking people both new and old (from the old guard at Atari corp to the new developers keeping Atari alive) get the recognition that they deserve for their hard work
    3. Preserve the history of Atari in the video game hobby so that it survives long after us

    Nice review. This is the only home console version of Baby Pac and it’s just like playing the coin-op. I’ve played the coin-op at the Morristown Game Vault arcade in Morristown NJ as
    well as Ground Kontrol in Portland. The coin-op itself is kinda rare. The first couple of times I came across one, it didn’t work. The one in NJ was in excellent shape and always working when I would visit. I agree with your 5/5 pro-lines. This is an amazing accomplishment. Hats off to Bob D., and team.

    Great review! I’m happy to see it so well received. I bought a copy a while back but haven’t gotten around to playing it (it’s a common theme with me and my games). It’s super cool of Bob to have made the roms of his games available for free.
    Thanks for including shots of the actual arcade game. I wasn’t familiar with the arcade game, and now I have a much better idea of the experience that the 7800 port is aiming for.

      It's definitely one to pull out and try! And I thought it was important to show the arcade machine for that very reason so I'm glad it helped you in understanding and appreciating what Bob did!

    What I can say is I look forward to trying it! It was one of the 3, or 4 games I bought at the last chance sale that I HAVEN'T received yet. Heck I haven't even got a response from them in months and I dont bother them much at all. At least I deserve a update. Not great customer service. But, I'll wait it out because I really want my games.

      This is just ridiculous. You'll get it I know you will, Albert isn't a con artist. But making you all wait this long is nearly just as bad. I wish he could've discovered a way to get these done in a timely manner...

    I remember seeing a cab originally at a Carmike Cinemas in Albany GA as a kid. I'm very appreciative there's a more manageable version of the ghosts, in addition to the original.

    My local arcade has a Baby Pac-Man, so I can compare. Thanks for the pinball playing hints. I haven’t figured that portion of the game out yet.

    I played the arcade recently at one of our local arcades they had for a little while (assuming the machine is working because they do tend to have some problems in the pinball portion). Tell the truth they gave me a bloody nose right off the bat because it’s a tough game, but I found myself saying “please, sir may I have another?” and kept playing!

      So the brutal difficulty of the 7800 is arcade accurate then? That's good to know!

  • @rayforceaddict
    @rayforceaddict 4 місяці тому +2

    This port is just incredible and I’ve played it quite a bit. Good stuff. The synergy between both halves of the game makes for such a rewarding experience. I like how it’s more about milking the stage than even the other Pacs.

    • @rayforceaddict
      @rayforceaddict 4 місяці тому +1

      Fwiw you can exploit the AI and get the ghosts to file into the warp tunnel by hiding near it. It’s key to getting great scores on this.

    You're right that the arcade ghost behavior is just super nasty. This sort of leads to Baby Pac-Man's biggest problem as an arcade game: Any given arcade usually has both a better Pac-Man option and better pinball option.

  • @serqetry
    @serqetry 4 місяці тому

    Wow I'm really impressed how the video portion looks so accurate to the arcade game. I think it's weird they added an option to change the ghost behaviour... one of the most defining features (besides the pinball part of course) of the arcade game is how bizarre the ghosts move compared to other Pac-man games. They behave erratically in a way very similar to the ghosts in the Apple II game Gobbler that got Sierra sued... I've always felt this was possibly intentional since the lawsuit means Midway was very focused on Gobbler, and especially since this is the first Pac-man game to have a green ghost (which was also in Gobbler due to the Apple II's color palette). After the lawsuit, Sierra had to change the game into Jawbreaker. Maybe I'm reaching here, but it's my head-canon.

    • @TheAtariNetwork
      @TheAtariNetwork  4 місяці тому

      It is on mame and it works ok. My comment on it not even being emulated on mame correctly had more to do with the fact that they can only recreate the pinball aspect because the true one is a mechanical pinball game.

    Man, I gotta start looking for 7800 home brews...this one looks great! I've been wanting to maybe do my own, but watched a video on Atari programming, and was immediately discouraged as it is very difficult compared with something easy like writing on C+
    The other thing I have no clue about is how to transfer the data onto an actual physical chip to stick in a rom cartridge, so you can actually use it in a real console and not an emulator.
