I found on the back side of the cells if you lightly scratch the squares where the tabbing wire goes you dont need solder the wire will stick well just another tip for ya

thank you for your contribution to diy green! Came across your video as I prepare to make my first panel this weekend (if my cells arrive). So ive never soldered a solar cell, but I do have a good amount of general soldering experience (small-med elect. & plumbing). From watching your method you appear to be doing what i have heard called "drip soldering". In short, its melting the solder enough to liquify&pool around the contact, rather than creating a good electrical connection...
...by not holding the heat long enough, the solder is not sucked into the joint. you will know the difference because a drip soldered joint will have a dull appearance, while a proper joint will be shinny&smooth. let me know if that helps, or if your experience suggests otherwise! What exactly were the methods that did not work? I used polycorbonate on the back and laminated the cells to it with EVA. Then I put some silicon caulk on top for cushioning before covering it with tempered glass and framing it with 1/2 inch aluminum c-channel. The voltage is correct. It does 19 to 20 volts, but the wattage is low. I've only gotten 23 watts out of it so far. Haven't tested it in better sunshine yet, but I was hoping it would do 65 watts... or at least 40. Any advice?
Whats stopping me from using solid core copper wire as the connections ? also why have the tabbing wire run the entire length of the silver strip on the front wouldn't it be more economical to use the bare minimum when connecting the cells i.e. from just the bottom to the just the top of the next cell rather than run it trough the entire length of the first cell and then the second cell.
I was wondering, do all the solar cells have those patches on the back for the tabbing wire? Or do you have to purchase them separately? Also could you give me a list of items of what not to use?
I have some cells that I got on ebay and the tabbing wire doesn't seem to stick on. Most will solder on smoothly but after moving them around gently they just seem to pop off. On most of these cells the the 2 white lines are no longer white, they look gray as if that white coating has pulled off. What am I doing wrong? Any tips?
Where did you get these large cells? the ones on ebay are only 3" X 6" but it looks like you might have 6" X 6"
@boxybaby3 - I got mine on ebay - I don't see the seller on ebay anymore. Keep searching they will probably be there.
