    The Fall of Troy was heavily influenced by the The Mars Volta, if I remember correctly. Hence the last minute of static-y guitar at the outro of the song. Their Phantom on the Horizon EP (original demos titled Ghostship Demos, which I prefer to over the polished Phantom version) is thought of as 1 song broken up into 5 parts, similar to TMV’s Cassandra Gemini. Lyrically, I think a lot of TFOT songs are about sex or drug addiction (all three members struggled with it for several years) and I think this song is about the latter.

    As a musician who likes music thats academically correct. Followed theory and rules. Tfot can be hard to appreciate. But once you drop all that and embrace it for being just good noise, it becomes amazing. It's amazing for the chaos and intensity. Thomas creates noises, melodies and riffs that are amazing.

    the title of this one is a reference to the book "House of Leaves", a really cool take on postmodern literature - trying to even write a synopsis of it is pretty hard, but it's multiple stories and genres nested within each other with recursive footnotes containing entire chapters, angled and shaped text, pages upon pages of technical writing, and many more surprising, densely mysterious parts.
    in it, the Hol[lowa]y Tape is an in-universe part of a film that's the "bottom layer" of the story, one of the tapes about exploring a house that starts out as just bigger on the inside than the outside, and expands from there into a feverish nightmare of a reality-bending labyrinth.
    there's another song on this album "You Got a Death Wish, Johnny Truant?” which is the name of one of the main characters in the book as well

    comes together more as a full album in my opinion. from another commenter "From genius “The Hol[ ]y Tape…” is a quote taken from Mark Z. Danielewski’s novel “House of Leaves,” with “Hol[ ]y” being short for “Holloway." havent read that book but i think i might now

    Went through FoT's discography back when I was checking out math rock and really enjoyed them, especially their first two albums (which included this one). I haven't heard them in a while but listening to this definitely reminds me of why I dug them: the wealth of interesting, proggy/mathy riffs with such incredibly kinetic energy. They remind me of a slightly more accessible Dillinger Escape Plan, or a slightly less accessible Dance Gavin Dance... or maybe even a The Mars Volta without the psychedelia, so they really hit a sweet spot for me as someone who enjoys that combination of complexity, abrasiveness, chaos, and accessibility.

    I haven't read House of Leaves, but my husband did and the little bits and pieces I managed to snoop while he read are simply wild. Musically, this fits certainly because that's a book that pushes boundaries too and as far as I know, narrative-wise it's also pretty experimental in structure. Great insight as always, Bryan, pretty interesting genre discussion!

  • @JordanPeacock
    @JordanPeacock Рік тому +1

    The root of post-hardcore is, to me *experimentation*. People didn't make post-hardcore thinking of it as a genre. They made hardcore or punk or emo, and wanted to fuck with expectations of it.

    I'm guessing that the music isn't as connected to the lyrics in the way you're searching for. I think they just aim to jam around and "make cool music", similar to your thoughts in the recent Polyphia video. TFOT certainly do make cool music and I've seen them live. They are really amazing. But my guess is that thematically it's not that deep when it comes to the lyrics dictating how the music moves. I could be totally wrong about that - would be open to hearing a fan's perspective.

    I've not heard The Fall of Troy before, but really enjoyed the track, so much so that I listened to the Doppelganger album... Really creative and brilliantly schizophrenic. For some reason, one of the tracks reminded me of early Idlewild ' Last night I missed all the fireworks.' Sometimes I wonder what evolution happened to lead to an album like this one, and what heritage/ lineage influenced it's creation.

      a band that TFOT influenced is Hail The Sun too. A man, I used to not give an ear to HTS but after my spotify finish Doppleganger for the umpteenth time, it auto-shuffle into this absolute gem of the Elphantitis EP, the song being 'Will They Blame Me If You Go Dissappearing?' When I heard it, I was smacked in the face with the sound, I had to listen to the full tape. The Elphantitis EP blew me away, from 'OW! Splidao to Eight Ball, Coroner's Pocket' I got blasted with a gem I pushed to the side everytime I saw them in recommeded playlists. From their, I explored outside of TFOT, and I kept listening to HTS. When I finished Elphantitis, I thought it couldn't get any better and THEN 'Rolling the Red Carpet' off HTS's 'Wake' album hit me like a brick (pun from WTBMIYGD above.) 'Wake' doubled down, and hits you, Black Seritonin, Missed Injections, Human Target Practice, Anti-Eulogy, EVERYTHING was great.
      All in All, if anyone is reading this. Do yourself a favor, and listen to Hail The Sun's Elphantitis EP and Wake album. Also even though I just nerded out on one band, here's some other albums I recommend:
      Balance and Composure's 'The Things We Think Were Missing'
      THRICE's 'Illusion of Safety/The Artist in the Ambulance'
      ATDI's 'Relationship of Command'
      SAOSIN's 'Translating The Name'
      Brave Little Abucus's 'Just Got Back From the Discomfort We're Alright (JGBFTDWA)'

Rockstar Nailbomb, Last March of the Ents (Self-Titled), Act One Scene One, You Got a Death Wish Johnny Truant?, Laces Out Dan, Macauly McCulkin (Doppelganger), Chapter I: Introverting Dimensions, Chapter V: The Walls Bled Lust (Phantom on the Horizon), Excreations, Sledgehammer, Seattlantis (Manipulator), for example.

    Hey Brian! I’m curious what you pulled out by the end of this week. I’m been out of touch with the channel for a while, doing some catching up. I’m interested in many of the “post” genres- post rock, Post metal, post hard-core, post black metal, etc. I’ve never listened to metal and understood the historical context in which “ post” Moments arise. I grew up listening to a lot of work, but didn’t really listen to hard-core before that. I didn’t quite have the context to understand what post hard-core actually was. As a big fan of post metal, I’ve been exploring some older stuff and looking at what it is now to see kind of what you are doing this week. I’m also been exploring this with black metal as “post black“ has started to become a thing.
    On a sidenote, the fall of Troy is always blowing my mind that it’s a guitar a bass and drums. They are so chaotic yet create melodic structures in their music. As always, thanks for your thoughts and your videos!

    • @CriticalReactions
      @CriticalReactions  Рік тому +1

      I don't think I found very many common threads here. Like most post- genres it's a grab bag due to it's origins being so diverse. Though there are typically some driving, melodic guitar lines that don't usually do the chugging pedal note riffs, harsh vocals tend to be a bit higher in their perceived pitches and are frequently paired with clean vocal sections, and there's a general driving energy through the songs. That's all kinda vague for describing a genre though, but it's the best I got out of this selection.

    • @ckokomo808
      @ckokomo808 Рік тому

      @@CriticalReactions Thanks for the comment- ya, post-hardcore seems to be more of a grab bag then like post-rock, post-metal. But maybe that’s part of it. Hardcore is a fairly defined genre but the aesthetic and ethos is very DIY, F the system, so maybe post-hardcore focuses more on the ethos of following a rigid musical structure while maintaining a few common threads??? Idk, just reaching for straws 🤣
