This album was really important to me and really shaped the way I thought of music. At the time I was really into things like Circa Survive, Chiodos, and The Fall of Troy. I also had this obsession with The Mars Volta. This album really bridged a gap between those styles of music and opened my eyes and showed me how these types of music could coexist in some weird way.
Love TSOAF, just came from one of your Rx Bandits reviews. If you want to hear the bandits lineup simply playing as TSOAF, listen to " Blessings Be Yours Mister V" from their third album
It’s not a demo version. It was a release. Craig wasn’t in the band until the next album. They remastered this cd years later and added shit. Members from finch were in the band at first as well.
It’s also basically all Matt embree on the music. He writes all guitars, bass, and arrangements. Cgak drumming is the other main piece, with rich adding the vocals and ideas which Anthony adds to. Those 4 are the core, it’s basically two old band members creating a weird project and bringing in friends
So what are the different time signatures used here? Could you maybe place time stamps and put 4/4; 12/8; etc. next to them? Such a great album and brings back awesome memories
enter shikari next maybe? the sounds of animals fighting and enter shikari entered my life around the same time, so that's where my brain went next after seeing this.
This was really awsome! I never heard of these guys before, need to check it out. 😊 Bryan, i´m sorry i can´t donate any cash to your chanel.. Can hardly afford feeding my kids in this insanity we live in.. But i do hope you one day can look in to Third Ion. ❤
People don’t give Steve Choi enough credit for this band, dude is the only original member who doesn’t have his own Wikipedia page lol. The riffs in this song are wild and somehow they work.
I love that you listened to the original version of this track. Owens is not on it, that part you thought was him is actually Rich Zahniser from The Hippos. The only album that Owens is on is Lover The Lord Has Left Us and he was only part of the live lineup on their first tour.
Man, Sound of Animals Fighting is a trip. Their second album is especially experimental with a decent number of songs sang in Sanskrit, a song who's beat is made up entirely of kitchen utensils and appliances (which then has a breakdown with an opera singer) and more. I'd almost describe them as post-hardcore Igorr on that album most specifically.
i loved the tiger and the duke so much i got the second album cover tattooed on my forearm. the early 2000s was peak music. so much experimentation that created some of the most incredible songs that are mixed with so many genres. its all been downhill since.
I'm gonna lose my whole year discovering and diving into post-hardcore supergroups now, aren't I? 😄 But yeah, thanks. I'll definitely be checking that out.
Possibly the only reaction channel I've found that has covered my top 3, RX Bandits (well at least the members on this), Coheed, and Dear Hunter. Much respect to the amount of effort you put into these.
You should keep in mind that this first album was written from the drums up. Rich Balling basically took a bunch of raw drums that their drummer recorded, assembled them into songs, and had a bunch of musicians come in and lay different parts over them. That’s why the music is so uniquely chaotic
Wow this takes me back down memory lane! This was definitely one of my favorite songs back in my dance Gavin dance post hardcore phase and this song still holds up
I don't know this band but wow, what incredible chaos. I immediately went and listened to the studio version afterward. This demo is better, by a mile. The vocals are so raw and effective, and they are effective because they are so raw. The studio version with its perfect EQ and balance just deadens the intensity completely. And I didn't find the guitar tones nearly as mesmerizing as they are here. There is a LOT to be said for proper mixing and production, but something like this needs to be handled in a special way or you'll just kill it by making it "perfect". If I heard the studio version first I probably wouldn't have been interested in the band, but this version is something special.
I’m so glad you reacted to this song CR!!! It’s one of my all time favourite tracks from any band. I’ve travelled hundreds of miles to see them live as their tours are limited with only a small number of venues. I hope you dive deeper and continue to enjoy them.
Just an FYI TSOAF have scheduled some more shows starting in April!! I’ll be heading down to Seattle to catch them a second time this year, if they tour close to you go check them out!
Pretty sure Anthony went in to the studio with no lyrics planned, got high, and pounded out all the vocals in one night. May be why they don't make a ton of sense. Heard it on a podcast with him somewhere.
Really good proggy, mathy, post-hardcore; it's bordering on too chaotic, but I chalk a lot of that up to it being a demo and I can easily imagine the studio version being much more palatable with just a better production. Really dig the polyphonic vocal style, and the busy guitar/drum work also keeps my interest for what's going on underneath it. I just think for something that's this complex you really need a super clear production to be able to hear and appreciate everything that's going on.
I love this band, and is a strange coincidence that you've mentioned the Mars Volta because I was just looking at your reactions to them. You do an excellent job dissecting these songs..very discerning. I enjoy it. Thanks.. if you're looking for more TSOAF I suggest I, the swan which includes the vocalist from RX Bandits which you've done a reaction to
One of my favorite bands! They have a very interesting music writing process for this album and their new one, where they don’t sit in a room together. Song ideas usually start from drum parts and then it gets passed onto other members to build upon.
You know how you have certain vocal styles that just completely grate for you that you have to consciously force yourself to look past to properly analyze some tracks? I loved literally everything about this track; it’s a wild ride in the best way (for me), but the tone of the clean vocals on this skipped the line and jumped straight to my last nerve. I know that’s a me thing, not a them thing, but I always hate when there’s just one element off my tastes, but that element is so far off it takes over.
Totally understand, especially given the vocalists. There's a lot of "whiny emo" singers put together here and I'd imagine that only amplifies how grating they'd be if it's not what you enjoy. I hit this stuff in my formative years and love it but even my friends who listen to similar stuff find Craig Owens' vocals grating.

interesting, never heard the demo version
ha! half these guys are from my town, remember when their demo tape was making the rounds. Neat.

Interesting. I'll have to look up The Hippos to hear Rich in isolation.
@@CriticalReactions the original vocalist actually did it live with them in this video ua-cam.com/video/214KQG5zgTc/v-deo.html

It wasn't Craig Owens on the demo or any of the versions. It's a man named Ariel from the band The Hippos.
Craig owens is not on this. Only on lover the lord has left us.
A lot of people seem to not know that. Glad you do.
The 2 guitarists, bassist, and drummer for this album are RX bandits. This whole album is SICK AS FUCK
Please do Sianvar! They were a “supergroup” Hail the Sun vocalist Donovan Melero.
I'm gonna lose my whole year discovering and diving into post-hardcore supergroups now, aren't I? 😄

Ive been hoping for a TSOAF reaction for so long! lol its criminal how few reactions to their stuff there are on youtube >.
Wow this takes me back down memory lane! This was definitely one of my favorite songs back in my dance Gavin dance post hardcore phase and this song still holds up
I don't think I'll ever leave my post-hardcore phase 😂

Hundreds of miles for a live show is certainly some dedication. Given what little I've heard though it's certainly a trip worth making.

@@man-o-steel-1977 That's awesome! I gotta check if they're coming down here.
