  • This performance was recorded live in the Closeup Gallery at the World Famous Magic Castle. The show is a tribute to the memory of magician Dean Dill. Dean was one of Dan's early mentors and was a tremendous influence on him (and countless other magicians.) Dean passed away in February of 2015, 4 months prior to this performance.

One of my favorite things about magic and being a fan is the love and respect that generations of magicians have for the others who influenced them and watching them pay tribute in their performances and acts. Whether I'm at a show or just watching stuff on youtube I'm constantly amazed by the skill/dedication it takes to the craft. This was terrific Dan thanks for sharing!

I agree. I stand on the shoulders of giants. I'm glad you liked the performance. Be sure to seek out Dean's work. He was just great (as a magician and as a human.)

Dan, I have tracked down and am going to download Dean Dill's version, through Vanishing Magic Inc. It's an excerpt from Extreme Dean ( as I'm sure you know!). Is your version available to purchase also? I am based in the UK. With best regards, Lee

Pazuzu, I'm glad you liked the show. Thanks for your kind words. Be sure to seek out more of Dean's work. And since you're just getting started, I'll suggest some of my other favourites (in no particular order) :
      Pop Haydn
      Jonathan Levit
      Shawn McMaster
      Andrew Goldenhersh
      David Minkin
      Bill Goodwin
      Rob Zabrecky

Thanks Dan -- looking up clips right now! I'm familiar with Jerry Andrus through Shawn Farquhar, and the rest I'm really looking forward to getting familiar with.
[Later]: Man, Jonathan Levit's C4 is amazing! I've vowed not to buy high-end tricks till I've mastered the basic sleights and other skills in Bobo and Erdnase, but that's definitely going on my list as an incentive.

Dean was one of the most influential people on in my teenage years. Even though I hadn't met him, I corresponded with him through email regarding original tricks of mine. I had met him at a convention and purchased Extreme Dean. From there I corresponded with him even more, showing him my performances of his effects, and he would give me advice. I dropped out of magic for a while, but when I found out he had passed it was pretty upsetting. He was a great guy and your performance here is a great tribute.

I hope that's a valuable process for you Nicholas. I imagine you could learn from my flaws as well as my successes. Back in 2000, I spent the year living in LA so I could be near the Castle. I spent lots of nights watching the same magician do his or her act over and over, learning little bits from each show. It was so enlightening to see how an act would morph from show to show.

I don't understand. All i can think of is magnets or somehow pulling the coins back up into your sleep with some device but even that doesn't make sense. 11:48 at .25 speed you can literally watch the bottom coin disappear. I've watched it 50 times and it just vanishes and his hand does nothing. Is it his ring? I really don't see how and his hand looks clean after

There are lots of great sources. The 'bible' of coin magic is JB Bobo's New Modern Coin Magic book. But to get started, I'd suggest David Roth's videos from L&L Publishing. Start with the first one, then go from there. www.vanishingincmagic.com/magic/magic-dvds/basic-coin-magic-volume-1-david-roth/ Be patient - coin magic can be tough.
