Hi, my name is David and I belong to Walter, and he is a lot like Bruce. I was really sick and flu-ey one night and Walter jumped up onto my bed and lay the length of me all night to keep me warm. He's so not cuddly at night, as he always wants his own space at night, but that night he wouldn't leave my side. Airedales are like no other dogs. He is the love of my life and the best buddy I have ever had. I love him.

I have two Airedales, both are young and under two years. Everything you say here is true for my dogs except the part about exercise. They need A LOT of exercise or else they will literally eat my house. I mean like bite and destroy woodwork or walls. They get two hours of walks a day and the reason I got two was so they could play together. I think that helps but I also wouldn’t wish two young Airedales on my worst enemies! These dogs are special, yes like humans but I feel my whole life revolves around them. Still, I’m hooked on the breed. They are clowns and beautiful and sweet and stubborn and tough as nails. They boy is very bonded to me and I’ve never experienced a love like this before. He’s incredibly good looking and has some mild separation anxiety because he wants to be with me constantly. He’s not cuddly at all but I believe he would jump through a window to save my life if he had to. The girl is more independent and less goofy. She is the leader of the two despite her smaller size. She would protect the boy at all costs. She is also smarter than him. Can’t stress how much work an Airedale is but the upside is the deepest connection and loyalty. Very special breed indeed.

Dustin, I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost mine 13 months ago and have not recovered from the loss of her. She was 14yrs 3mos. When she passed. My search for another has been frustrating and heartwrenching. When I extended my hand I found her paw. I've had 5 Airedales and I can't picture my life without one. They are the best. Nice video

Hi, I had an Airedale called Barney! I've just been watching your movie about Bruce. It's amazing, Bruce is just like Barney, so very clever. All the things you say are just so reminiscent of Barney. I miss him. He was exactly the same, not terribly affectionate, every thing had to be on his terms! He was great with other dogs and humans. I lived in N London with him, he was a real celeb, people used to lean out their windows and call him when we walked by. No one knew me, l was just the bloke with Barney. He lived to almost 16 and looked and behaved like a pup until the end. I think I might get another, I lost Barney three years ago. Thanks Nigel

I have grown up with Airedales my whole life as my father has bred and showed Airedales for as long as I can remember. Over the years I have heard many comments made about the Airedale, mostly from so called dog experts who really do not know the breed, the way a true Airedale owner does. Watching your video was very refreshing because you really nailed it on the head. Specially about the intelligence of the Airedale, I have been told many times that they are not the smartest dog to train, were as my reply to them is the trick to training an Airedale is, you need to be smarter than the dog your training because if not he will outsmart you. My last Airedale Jake was my best buddy for 14 years and it took me a while to get over loosing him before getting another one. Now I have a new pup Rio the biggest thing he has done is make me wonder why I waited two years to get another Airedale. Love your video and hope it gets seen by many who have the wrong impression about the Airedale. Those of us have and/or still own an Airedale know.

Same here , I've grown up with Airedales. My last Airedale Molly, youngest dog to ever make gold star. One of only 6 dogs to make top dog in 20 years of the dog training club.
I'm really good and fair at training an Airedale. But I'm still months laters, increadably upset at the loss of my little girl.
I have a deposit on a new baby. I seem to be good at understanding and setting my Airedale on the right path, positive experiences only for a baby.
You buy a puppy, it's not their fault that they have to live in your home, it's your fault, just give them an interesting fun life. Whatever the input you put into making them happy, it's returned.

If you are "the Airedale's human" then you will find them easy to train. As and example, my first Airedale, Merlin and I did agility and obedience competitions, and when were learning agility skills, he walked on the "dog walk" unassisted the very first time he saw one, and I never had to "teach" it to him at all. The most surprising trick was the weave poles. The first time we went through them with a tight lead. The second time we did it with a loose lead. The third time was with no lead. I tried to take him through them a 4th time but he sat down and let me know he was bored. He did the weave poles perfectly after that every time, both in shows and in practicing. Yes, ADTs really are that smart. The counterexample would be Merlin's mate, Sarah. I couldn't teach her anything. But my wife (who was Sarah's pet human) tried it with Sarah and it took about 4-5 trips through the weave poles to "learn" them perfectly. I suspect that how the Airedale feels about you is the main governing factor on how fast the ADT learns from you.

Dead on about the Airedale learning curve. I could never teach mine to speak, on command (it's really an easy command, as every other dog I've ever had easily learned it) . He just couldn't see the reason for it. We lived near a childrens playground at that time, and I noticed that he was fascinated watching the children work their way up the 3 or 4 board floors, with crawl space & staggered openings to the slide at the top, so one day when there no kids playing there, I took him out there and in a mere 10 minutes, he would work himself to the top and go down the slide on command. I had to watch him around kids, because though he wouldn't bite, he was a natural referee, and if the horseplay got too rough, he wouldn't hesitate to 'punish' the one he saw as the aggressor. He punished by pinching with the little flat teeth between the canines. Didn't break skin, but it was painful, and often resulted in a little bruise. Unfortunately my wife didn't like him, so when it was time, I would up with a Scottie as replacement. Probably a better dog for an older person anyway. They're different , and in some ways the same. They are also referies, with an innate sense of fair play, and with short legs easier to keep up with.

You clearly love Bruce a lot. I really enjoyed this video. It has been so helpful to hear of the real life everyday experiences of an actual Airedale owner rather than the usual overly pedantic views of a so called expert. I had an Airedale years ago but I had to give him up for various reasons none of which I hasten to add were the dogs fault. But I am hoping to get one in the very near future and hence I came across your video in the course of my research. Really glad I did. Thank you very much. This has been really helpful. Regards to Bruce!

As someone who has had Airedales as companions for decades (the question of which is the owner and which is the pet was settled years ago - clearly the ADT's believe that THEY are the masters...). I absolutely LOVED this video (and will now go on to view your other (others?). You are spot on in about 99.9% of what you explain. There were only two minor things which I might mention, and they are not corrections but just additional information.
We currently have two "giants" or Oorang Airedales. Katie Mae (6) is a bit over 30" at the shoulder and is VERY muscular. She weighs in at a "dainty" 130 lbs (59.1 Kg) and her last "puppy", Archie (4), is a just a touch under 32" at the shoulder but is slender and weighs approximately 110 lbs (50 Kg). Katie Mae (yes we are in the deep South in the US) could happily go for years without a walk, although she can be as energetic as the typical Jack Russell when she feels like it. Archie on the other hand is EXTREMELY active (and "hunts" in our fenced in yard continuously). He demands as much exercise as possible and would thoroughly enjoy a 2-hour trip to the local dog park twice a day. My wife thinks he is hyperactive, but my own suspicion is that he would love to be on a large farm where he could keep the vermin under control. Here is a fairly urban residential setting, he is the reason that no one on within a half mile of our home has squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, coyotes, red foxes, or white-tailed deer any more, and had he been a bit faster one might have added hawks to that list as well (missed the hawk by about a foot when he jumped to catch it. So while I completely agree that most ADT's can manage with less than an hour a day of exercise, that applies only to MOST. Some require a good deal more - and if they don't get it out of doors, then they will manage to get it by running laps (and running roughshod) inside your home. (sigh)
The only other thing that I would like to add concerns grooming. You are again spot on about bathing - enough is enough and too much can be a disaster for your Airedale's coat and skin. But as to grooming if you are in a hot climate (I am in the Atlanta, GA area in the US), then clipping OFTEN in the hot months is not merely a good idea. It is more of a way to keep your Airedale from getting heat stroke. Temperatures above 100 F (roughly 38 C) are not not all that unusual here in the summer and highs run only a 3-4 degrees lower than that for sometimes as long as 5 months of the year. So depending on one's location, more frequent grooming may be necessary. (Note: I have an on-line friend who lives in Alaska. The summers there are brief and can be hot; however, the winters are long and very cold. My friend has the opposite problem, and he grooms once a year in the late spring. Surprisingly his Airedales (3 of them I believe) are comfortable outside in the winter when the temperature is above -10 F (-23 C) and they only have to wear their "booties" and "canine parkas" when the temperature drops to or below the -30 F (roughly -35 C) range.
Many apologies for going on so long - Airedales are a passion of mine and the longer I am the companion of such creatures the more I at their intelligence, their creativity, their loyalty, their sense of "protection of family and home", and their obvious sense of humor.

William Austin I have had two and on my third Airedale. They are very loyal fun companions and love most friendly people. Airedales in general are not hyper if given the right home and environment. My young dogs were good with 2x short walks a a day and a few romps in the yard with or without a soft type ball or soft frisbee. After about the age of 6 one walk a day is sufficient as long as outside play breaks in yard. Awesome watch dogs within the home. I do not recommend this breed of dog if they aren't given opportunities for a walk and some exercise outside the house and soft play inside. These are not dogs to be left outside if you have winters or in hot heat if you live in the South. They are definitely house dogs and need to live with their human companions. I live in Connecticut which has cold winters so I never have them out to long in severe cold weather. Actually no one should own any dog if not given the proper care and any special care given to that special breed of dog. A dog is only as good as its owner.

In regard to bathing, we lived in the country on a lake, and our female 'dale spent hours swimming. (Remember, they're part otterhound!) We never had to bathe her with soap, except when she ran into a skunk! Water doesn't deplete the oils in the coat, soap does. Give your Airedales a chance to get in the water and swim from time to time -- they love to fetch a ball or stick -- it's great exercise for them and they really enjoy it!

I have a giant schnauzer, English Mastiff, and will be going to get my Airedale this Saturday! My giant is defiantly the smartest dog I have ever owned, so I wanted to go with a similar breed. Or mabey it just cause the previous dog I trained was my mastiff😂. She may not be smart, but she can basic things like potty outside, sit and walk on a leash. Plus she is sweet with kids, and friends, but is also very protective. My giant is a little more aggressive though. For some reason there are a few people that he absolutely hates. Anytime they come over he literally will bark the entire time, and growl. I don’t want to punish him for being protective, so I usually just put him in my room and tell him to lay down.He never barks at people on walks, just when people come near the property. I’ve even taken him into stores before and he was fine. I hope the Airedale is a little more laid back, but I want still want him to be protective of me and my family. Super excited!

I have Airedales, and I once had a neighbor who had a giant schnauzer. From observing both and seeing them play together I suspect that the Airedale had a lot more brain-power than the G.S. -- The ADT was forever tricking the G.S. and getting her way in everything while the G.S. seemed to be a good deal less "sharp" in a lot of ways. Of course, that could have been that individual G.S. - one should never "generalize" from a single case. But in any case, YMMV.

And the most highly decorated war dog from WW1 was an Airedale who despite being shot either 9 or 11 times still manged to get into the German pillbox and disabled all 3 of the Germans who were in it. Surprisingly the Airedale lived. I've read that ADTs were both the first "war dogs" in the 20th century as well as the first police dogs (back in England in the late 1800's/early 1900's).

I grew up with 4 male dales - one was a bossy know-it-all. One was very regal, but devoted companion, that got visibly offended, if the punishment didn't fit the crime. One was a scared brat, that turned into a cranky old man, that pretended to be deaf when you asked him to do stuff he didn't want to - but he could still hear you cutting cheese, in the kitchen, even when he was in another part of the house - and the last one, who was a really cute, fuzzy and really friendly goofball.. but he had serious separation issues..
I loved them all, and they helped me through many tough times. and now, as a grown up, I'm at a point in my life where I'm thinking about getting my own.. and I kinda got me wondering, should I get a male or a female Dale?

thing to remember is they grow fast so you should limit their
exercise in the firsts 12 months to 20mins or so because their bones
are still forming. Vary the training to keep it fresh. Not good for
small apartments. Bored Airedale's can be destructive. Lots of
exercise prevents that. A Fantastic Breed and you'll never have a
better friend. Great Guard dog too.

+Oliver Earley There's so much about airedales that can't fit in one video, I could have talked for hours! All medium to large sized dogs should have limited exercise; I go by the 5 minutes for each month of age rule. Exercise, play, games and training helps with boredom - I could exercise Bruce for hours but if he doesn't have the mental stimulation he#'ll still get bored. They really are a fantastic breed!

you have great insight , a very high level of observation skills. I wonder if your Airedale stands around looking like he is thinking or even might have a slight case of temporary dementia , my dog does that often.
My Airedale when let outside to pee he prances to the middle of the yard barking looking around as if you say stay off my property im here now and youll be sorry if you breach my property line. lol

My puppy is very mischievous yet intelligent, but she's not very well trained. She turned one a couple days ago. She is difficult to train. When I throw the ball she keeps it with her. Should I give her paid trading before she stops learning.

    • @williamaustin8364

We have had Airedales for 30+ years (and severa litters of puppies along the way. Airedales NEVER stop learning. Our 13-1/2 year old male (Obidiah) learned to open a door by gripping the knob in his jaws, clamping down, and twisting when he was 13. I think they MAY stop learning about the same time they stop acting like puppies. I.e, maybe a day or two before they [ahem] cross the Rainbow Bridge from old age.
Although earlier training is better (because YOU will have more energy and patience), we were in one obedience class with a 10-month-old female and there was also a 10-year-old ADT female in the class as well. They were the two "stars" and both learned everything before any other dog in the class.
This is just my two cents' worth, and of course your smileage may vary.

MY welsh never brings the ball back until Im not paying attention. He likes to posses the ball and run but fetching he's take it or leave it. He truly likes stealing someone else's ball and posses that and keep it away. You can almost hear him chuckling as dobermans, rottweilers, or Sheppard are TRYING to chase him down for their ball.

Airdales love the bush and being real dogs , I have had them for years , your right about not being over handled , very independent dog , but loyal , bloody naughty though ,,,personally wouldn't own one in a city as they love being in the mix of stuff , not a excessory to ones hand bag , or brat kids ,, let them be what they are breed for , in the country on the back of trucks with their owner all day ,, not doggy daycare bullshit ,, same with wirehairs which I have had also ,,

    • @tinatorfridge2098
      @tinatorfridge2098 5 років тому

My Airedale is almost all time off leash. He is only getting stubborn when he has no action for more than two days, then he get's bored quite fast and does random things for getting my attention. And I of course have to be very fast when there's a cat crossing his path. But he is very attentive to my commands and I never have to get too loud or strict (which would actually be the most counterproductive tone, he would just shut off).

It depends on the climate where you live. I live in the Atlanta area and in the hot months I try to groom about every 3 weeks, while I may go 6 weeks to 2 months between groomings when Winger gets here. However, a friend in Alaska combs, removes foreign objects from their coats regularly. BUT she only gives them a "haircut" once a year in the late Spring, just before summer. [ Hmm. Let's see... wasn't Summer on a Thursday this year in Alaska? :-) ] Now that fact could also be related to the fact that she had either 12 or 13 Airedales the last time I saw one of her posts, and they ALL like to pile on the bed and keep her company at night. (No, I don't know how many of them make it there and how many get there late and end up on the floor. I just found they fact that they ALL try to get on the bed at night to be interesting...)

+Allan Cp Not great - they are active dogs, and though they aren't huge, they are quite large dogs. They also love to run around when they get excited, and they definitely need a garden they have a lot of access too as they love the outdoors.

I would say the more room the better. The more important thing is time followed by socialization. Airedales that are left alone especially when they are young seem to have more anxiety and are more destructive. Airedales people ae a funny lot too, we instantly love any other Airedales person we meet and will be friendly to people that know it is an Airedale and not a Goldendoodle. Many many people I've met only know me as Max's dad. BTW Max just turned 8 on August 3. Happy Birthday buddy !!!
