I actually knew one of the Cockettes... in Cairo of all places in the late 90's. The epitome of "appearances are deceiving". He was then an unassuming grey-haired ex-pat. Fascinating history. During his Cockette period he a was a designer, a tres gai profession. Then, because of his skills, he switched to the butch/nerd profession of designing computer circuits. (Back then it was tricky to cram components into limited space on a circuit board, required design skills. ) His earnings allowed him to retire, but only to a place where the cost of living was cheap. He eschewed the English-speaking enclaves, became fluent in Egyptian Arabic and lived in a typical Egyptian neighborhood. I ran into him once in Garden City. (He was on his way to Cairo's only AA meeting.) He said, "Did I tell you I'm a Muslim now?" Seriously? "If I'm going to live here, I have to fit in and I can't drink anymore". (Alcohol is forbidden to Muslims.)That's the last I saw of him. I assume he lived there happily ever after. (Sorry about the TMI, but it's a fond memory.)
I've seen this before, it's brilliant! I think all the little Lady GaGa fans of the world need to watch this and learn where the truly avant garde originated from...
@JhonathanFree NOPE! Nothing avant garde ever existed before the Cockettes, that's exactly what my post was trying to convey. Luckily you stepped in to correct me, you're obviously a very savvy connoisseur on the subject...

One of my favorite documentary! Hands down!
I watch this with my boyfriend and we both cry and touch each other x
This has to be one of my all time favorite comments on the film, even if 8 years old! I'm the producer/ co-director
I had the privilege of knowing Lendon Sadler who was in the Cockettes. He passed away yesterday may he rest in peace.
I too was profoundly impacted by and honored to have a friend in the late and far too great Lendon Sadler :-) RIP Lendon
