Thanks for the great video! I have ditched Adobe Premier Pro and have been using this software. It works great for my needs. I've been using it for creating intros and credits for homemade movies. I have like 50+ VHS home movies I've been converting to digital.
the green screen is just amazing on this. im using v14. its so much more advanced that final cut and premier which are far more fussy about how you light.
Another excellent video. This looks like a comprehensive video editing tool. A thorough guide into using some of the features of this video editor. Thank you, I think I might check it out.
I found this video after watching all your RPi 3 cooling videos. I downloaded it and will give it a shot when I have some time. Really enjoy your videos, so I liked and subscribed.
Thank you very much. I cannot find a video about picture in picture in Davinci Resolve. Your video answered the question. Also, could you demonstrate more functions?
Yes... More Resolve videos, and maybe add a couple things: Compare Resolve to KdenLive, and and maybe talk about using it in terms of a process for creating videos for starting a new you Tube channel.
Very informative, thank you for sharing. I do have a question tho. Can you use a series of photographs and some music to create a slide show presentation?
I've tried to use davinci resolve, and while I now use it for color correction, I'll continue to use Premiere for the actual editing. The lack of customisation, features and the slow scrubbing makes it a pain to use. It's great for a free editor, but it doesn't stand a chance against Premiere for more advanced editing.

Hi Christopher, may I use DaVinci Resolve Free Video Editor to edit Videos for clients/organizations or must I first obtain permission for commercial use? Thanks for the great FAQ presented. Very helpful.
What is the best Raspberry pi to buy? Also will you talk about bitcoins about how it will affect the economy and the future, its aspects, mining, the history?
"Best" depends on what you want to do. The Pi 3 is the fastest and has WiFi. The Pi 2 is, in my view, the absolute classic Pi, and a very good buy if you can get it cheaper than the Pi 3 (in theory they are now the same price). The Pi Zero is great -- if you can get hold of one -- where you need a small and cheap board. Basically, all Pis are cool! :)
ExplainingComputers Ok thanks, also will you do a video about bitcoins, they are complicated interesting and in the future it can have massive effects. I will give you some info if you need any
+ExplainingComputers if you need any information about it, its history and how it works and stuff, i can help you as i am a regular bitcoin miner and learned from my past experiences
People panicking and thinking a program is a virus because their OS asks for confirmation to install it? I think that says a lot about Windows security.
***** 12.5 is no longer a Beta. HitFilm is a great, easy to use video editor. DaVinci Resolve is a Pro video editor. So if you want quick, easy but limited consumer editing, go Hitfilm. If you want more control, and to learn a pro editor, go Resolve.
Excellent videos, it would be excellent if they added support for MP3 files in the future, especially as you say they are trying to get into the consumer market. Although I understand why they are not supporting MP3, it is after all 23 years old!
MP3 is also problematic for keeping in sync when used in video editing, as sections of silence can end up a slighly different length after encodes/decodes. Pro editors will hence always edit non-compressed audio files.
Hi great video. I have just downloaded the software, but I cannot import the files I have. They are all avi files. Does resolve support these type of files? If not how do I convert them? Many thanks
Firstly, having installed the package, reboot your PC. Then make sure you are trying to load footage into the file manager at the top left of the media screen. Resolve has a very specific workflow that you must follow. There are lots of other places where it appears you can import in your footage -- but you cannot. You must load top left in the media screen, then drag files into the media pool, then go to the edit screen, and finally drag files from there to the timeline. Good Luck!
Pictures can be imported in the same manner as video file. For "lights behind" you may need to key out the foreground (eg person) by shooting against green screen. I am producing a video at the moment on further Resolve techniques.
Question.....do davinci resolve compress the video....I am using Handbrake (free download) to compress a 700mb video into a 100mb video...and it is still to big for the 25 mb facebook upload....is there a way to compress a video from 700mb to under 25 mb , without having to chop the original video up ?? thank you for your assistance.
I tried out the rotation of video ...and it took a 700 mb video...and made it into a 3.75 Gb video..I have no idea how I managed to blow up the video MB into GB...what am i doing wrong ? I even chopped my 700 mb video (3 minute long) into less than half (1 minute long) ...??
for me it says that quicktime de / en coding has faild and i cant use my mp4 file (i use 12.5 beta 3, and quicktime 7.7.8). Maybe someone has a idear what i could do. *after restarting my Pc the message didnt appear anymore and i could use mp4 files. thanks for the great videos
Hey Explaining Computers. I just wanted to make a list of videos that you should make: Build Logs Video Editors Looking at different OS` Unboxings And Gaming!
This is a good list! :) And many of these things are on my list too! Esp. different OSs, video editors, and some unboxings -- in fact, only five minutes ago I accepted a product invite for an unboxing/review. And I must build a PC, or two . . .
Not a virus :'( No fun in installing it now. Also I think Blender might have a video editor? Might that be better/a good alternative (If you use the zip file of it, it won't bring up an administrator popup so you won't get people asking if it's a virus!)
Blender certainly has video editing functionality that I intend experimenting with one day. But it is has nothing like the features available in Resolve. :)
Geez.....I had to use 5 programs to make a video production....omg....Microsoft Screen Capture to get a video live made......then use Microsoft Expression Encoder to make the saved screen capture into VLC ....then I use HANDBRAKE to compress & convert it to mp4 format...then I use OBS Studio program ....followed by tweeking and cutting and splicing with VSDC video Editor or Windows movie maker Or Davinci program (which is way to complicated and can't remember how to use it)....LOL Takes about 4 days of recording, and converting, splicing etc....to make a 30min video ...
Thank you for your very good job although I am French and I don't understand English very well when it's spoken quickly :). On my computer it's very difficult to have sound with the edit mode. The sound is jerky. Perhaps my computer is not enough strong (i5 64 bits). I have to remove the sound for a smooth picture . It's not very confortable :)
Hello, I would love to use the editor but it cannot work with videos recorded by OBS Studio. Whenever I drag it into timeline, it says "Media Offline" message in the preview pane. When I save the project and reopen it, it reads the video fine for a while and when I work with the editor a little it starts to display that message again. I posted my issue to their forums, someone had similar issue and solved it by changing some x264 encoding parameters but this fix doesn't work for me. It is pity as I like the editor otherwise and would like to use it. No other editor has a problem with those video files :( Thanks for any ideas!
Just tried to Install Resolve on my Windows 10 machine. It requires installation of Quicktime for Windows to work. Is this going to be an issue for the future if Apple won't update or support Quicktime in the future?
You should be fine. If you are worried, once Resolve is installed, uninstall Quicktime and do a minimal install. I explain this in my recent video "The End of Quicktime for Windows": ua-cam.com/video/Fjn11dC_8kk/v-deo.html
You may also consider Shotcut. It is also a completely free video editor which supports all the basic and some advanced functions. Besides being free it is also open-source and has a version for Linux, Windows and OS X.
I know your basket of requests is quite full to overflowing but I feel quite certain there will be a grateful demand/request for further Resolve tutorials, please! Regardless, I hope you are well and that you are having a great time!
Thanks Kevin. It will all come down to the views! :) My first Resolve video has done very well in that respect, so if this one does OK I will do more. Already there has been a request linked to titles. And I think Chromakey may make a good video. :)
Previously i download this softwear but after installetion its ask qudqa acceleretor driver reqired- this driver not availble any where -how to solve this problem
I have an important question. Can this program accept GIF formats? I'm an aspiring animator working in hand-drawn 2D animation, and I really need to know if I can upload animations in this format.
I found out why the editor does not recognize all my .MP4 videos - I will only accept those that are encoded with the ISO standard compression. Converting the un-recognized files with AS4YOU to an ISO standard, made it work as desired.
DaVinci Resolve 12. After installation, trying to start Resolve, I get an error message: "No CUDA Acceleration Hardware Detected". I have a fairly strong video card. What's it asking for?
There are two possible issues. (1) try installing as administrator (right click to access this option when you have the install file selected). (2) make sure your video card drivers are up to date. When I upgraded to 12.5 I got the message you did, but fixed it with a graphics card driver update. :)
hello there i'm having a problem with my davinci resolve verison 12.5.0.052 this is what im getting when i open davinci. how can i fix it??? Error: Decoder client version (12.5.0.052) does not match RED Decoder version (12.5.0b.042) Failed to initialize RED Decoder with the configured number of decoders.
I tried running that installer in administer mode but the two error messages poped up again... "quicktime decoder initialization failed" "quicktime encoder initialization failed" I spent at least 8 hours today trying to find a solution but no one seems to know how to fix it. And comments like this usually get ignored... I really want this to be the video editor I've been searching for. Since you know a lot about computers, could you figure out what is causing that issue to happen? (I read somewhere that Windows could be blocking the connection between Quicktime and Davinci Resolve but I don't know if that's true) But you don't really have to figure it out if you don't want to though, I don't want you to waste your time on something stupid like this.
I am pretty certain this is a Windows issue. You could try running the program in administrator mode too (if you have got through the installation?). Or try using an administrator account on your PC. Or try uninstalling Quicktime (if installed) and then reinstall (minimally, as administrator) -- see my recent video on "The End of Quicktime for Windows" for more on this. Good luck! :) The end result is worth it.
WHAT ARE THE SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS FOR DaVinci Resolve? How much RAM do i need? Can my laptop run this program? specs: RAM 4 GB HDD 500 GB CPU core i3-2328M @ 2.20GHz,2 Cores, 4 Threads GPU Nvidia GeForce 610M
I'm afraid 4GB of RAM will not be enough. :( The minimum spec is, in theory, 8GB RAM and 1GB+ video RAM. From comments below it appears that you can run in 6GB, but this I am sure will be the limit. Sorry.
I guess i will have to use moviemaker! My pc has a spare RAM slot and I have a spare (form an other computer that i almost never use) DDR3 SODIM stick, and it's 2 GB! Only problem, my pc doesn't recognize it as usable memory!
there are a few other free movie editing programs, I need to go through and try them, I'm disappointed that Resolve doesn't run on my computer as well.
+ExplainingComputers no! It installed and it's working! I haven't done any rendering test, but if I try to use it, my PC becomes a blow torch with 99% RAM, 95% CPU, 95%GPU and 80°C on CPU and GPU, but it seems stable!
ExplainingComputers or anyone can you tell me why After about a minute my video and audio are not in sync? I have my intro audio and title then when my primary video begins to play it loses sync after about a minute. Thanks for your time
DaVinci Resolve is not officially supported for Ubuntu -- it is released for CentOS. But there are various guides: eg www.thefanclub.co.za/how-to/how-install-blackmagic-design-davinci-resolve-125-ubuntu-1604-lts But I've never tried this! :)
can someone help me?? whenever I try and open resolve it always says this "Please quit Resolve and install a OpenCL accelerated GPU card or update your OpenCL software driver to the latest version before continuing to use Resolve." what does that mean?
It means that you must use Resolve with a graphics card with at least 1GB RAM (not internal graphics), and that the drivers for your card must be up-to-date. For the latter, check you have Windows Update turned on, or run any software that came with the card for accessing updates (eg GeForce Experience). Good Luck!
It created an error for me stating it couldn't initialize Quicktime encoder and decorder. Despite it installing quicktime components. Rebooting, reïnstalling didn't help. De-installing.
lactobacillusprime It may be worth uninstalling and then reinstalling (minimally) QuickTime). Also, check that your graphics card driver is up to date -- Resolve is picky about this.
Full screen playback. Ability to export audio (a massive issue if you want to clean it up in another package). Customizable UI. Smoother playback. etc, etc.! It is a really major upgrade. :)
Lovely video. I've never felt so eager to download and play with a video editor like I do now.

I couldn't agree more. Christopher is an excellent tutor.

thanks for the tips, looking forward to playing around with it :)
Thank you very much. I cannot find a video about picture in picture in Davinci Resolve. Your video answered the question. Also, could you demonstrate more functions?
I will be making more Resolve tutorials I think. :)
Thank you. I was wanting a free program similar to premiere.
Great video with lot's of valuable info. Does it have it's own music library that's free to use without copyright issues???
No, it does not have a music library I'm afraid.
I would like more tutorials on this software :D btw, In the inspector, retime and scaling, what settings do you have there? thx for the video :D
Yes... More Resolve videos, and maybe add a couple things: Compare Resolve to KdenLive, and and maybe talk about using it in terms of a process for creating videos for starting a new you Tube channel.
This looks great! Would very much like more on this.
Flipping the video is really useful, thanks.
Very informative, thank you for sharing. I do have a question tho. Can you use a series of photographs and some music to create a slide show presentation?
Yes, you can do this -- by importing photos rather than videos and editing as I show in the music cut here.
Thank you.. I will have to check this out

Excellent videos, it would be excellent if they added support for MP3 files in the future, especially as you say they are trying to get into the consumer market. Although I understand why they are not supporting MP3, it is after all 23 years old!

hi i am facing a problem in running Davinci resolve 12. is stopping automatically. pls help advice
I found out why the editor does not recognize all my .MP4 videos - I will only accept those that are encoded with the ISO standard compression. Converting the un-recognized files with AS4YOU to an ISO standard, made it work as desired.
Now this is very useful feedback for many here -- thanks for sharing your experience.
can resolve basic do video enhancements such as color, Hues and contrast changes. I would like to make my videos look more vibrant.
What's the highest output resolution of the free version
The free version can handle 1920x1080, UHD, but not full 4K.
+ExplainingComputers is there any editor that's free and exports 4k? I heard of VLMC but still there is no stable release.
nextsef I'm not aware of anything handling true 4K. This said, I intend to do a wide review of free videos this summer, and will report back! :)
does this work on 32 bit window .. reply asap thank you
Sorry, it will only run on 64 bit.
It seems to be a good editor (especially for the price) but the supported file formats limits it's usefulness.
This is true. The target market for Resolve is professional, and hence it still focuses mainly on editing pro formats.
Yep. I understand that, but it does make it a bit less useful for the average Joe Shmo.
cee128d Totally agree. :) This said, Blackmagic Design is clearly very sensitive to this issue, and I am sure will include wider format support ASAP.
What video file formats does it currently support? I'm wondering if footage from an iPhone can be easily imported...
What about adding text to the videos? Is it possible to add or create some lower thirds or something like that with this editor?
Yes, you can add still or animated titles -- perhaps something I should cover in another video. :)
And I can probably add the ones I make on Photoshop, just like any other editor
Olga Nastya Yes, totally. Save titles with transparent backgrounds as pngs and they come across fine into Resolve.
How about side by side movie's for Google card board. ta.
is that free license at all , even we use for comercial ?
Yes, the free version (download on the left, not the right) is free for any purpose. There really is no catch! :)
How to make flying video by davinci resolve
Error: Decoder client version (12.5.0.052) does not match RED Decoder version (12.5.0b.042)
Failed to initialize RED Decoder with the configured number of decoders.
Install again as administrator (right click the install file to access this option). Reboot. If that does not work, then Resolve as administrator.
I tried running that installer in administer mode but the two error messages poped up again...
"quicktime decoder initialization failed"
"quicktime encoder initialization failed"
I spent at least 8 hours today trying to find a solution but no one seems to know how to fix it.
Hi, how to extend photo? I mean it can shows picture like 10 sec not like one sec..I try with speed but It does nt work.thanks
Drag the end of the clip (photo) to make it longer.
Na for answering me in the video
how do you convert mp4 to work
WHAT ARE THE SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS FOR DaVinci Resolve?
How much RAM do i need?
Can my laptop run this program?
specs:
RAM 4 GB
HDD 500 GB
CPU core i3-2328M @ 2.20GHz,2 Cores, 4 Threads
GPU Nvidia GeForce 610M
AL_O0 Excellent! But do try and keep your laptop cool -- eg by ensuring any vents are not blocked. :)
ExplainingComputers or anyone can you tell me why After about a minute my video and audio are not in sync? I have my intro audio and title then when my primary video begins to play it loses sync after about a minute. Thanks for your time
I cannot explain this I'm afraid. I've not experienced this problem. Sorry. :(
I figured it out, but thank you for your fast response.
Mine doesn't work non of my video's show in it,Please help me ;c
there's a problem, it says that I don't have or its not detected a license dongle and it doesn't let me in,
You have downloaded DaVinci Resolve Studio (which is not free), rather than the free version on the LEFT of the download screen.
Hey I have a dell desktop and I am trying to get a graphic card the get me a 60 fps rate what graphic card fit?
60 fps on overwatch
gtx titan x
I can get it to work with Ubuntu. Could you help me.
How to put things in you video
can someone help me??
whenever I try and open resolve it always says this
"Please quit Resolve and install a OpenCL accelerated GPU card or update your OpenCL software driver to the latest version before continuing to use Resolve."
what does that mean?
It means that you must use Resolve with a graphics card with at least 1GB RAM (not internal graphics), and that the drivers for your card must be up-to-date. For the latter, check you have Windows Update turned on, or run any software that came with the card for accessing updates (eg GeForce Experience). Good Luck!
My mac is up to date yet I still get the problem. I still don't understand?? Is my Mac too old?? or am I installing it wrong??
how to u do 2 videos in one
more functions ;)
It created an error for me stating it couldn't initialize Quicktime encoder and decorder. Despite it installing quicktime components. Rebooting, reïnstalling didn't help. De-installing.
Oh dear, this is a shame. :(
ExplainingComputers Not sure what is up with the encoder and decoder not initializing.
lactobacillusprime It may be worth uninstalling and then reinstalling (minimally) QuickTime). Also, check that your graphics card driver is up to date -- Resolve is picky about this.
ExplainingComputers Thanks. Will try those suggestions.
Im having the same issue.
not getting the free download for linux
No, there isn't one I'm afraid . . .
what is new in the 12.5 version compared too 12
i also would like to know if you have the abilety to upgrade from 12 to 12.5 without reinstalling the new version
Full screen playback. Ability to export audio (a massive issue if you want to clean it up in another package). Customizable UI. Smoother playback. etc, etc.! It is a really major upgrade. :)
Sadly not . . .
mine isn't like urs
