- The DaVinci Resolve video editor is a competitor to Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and Avid Media Composer that you can download for free for Windows or Mac. This video shows you how, and provides a demo of the program.
Please note that I have no association with BlackMagic Design.
The download link for DaVinci Resolve is: www.blackmagic...
You may need to shrink your browser window (crtl minus) to see the download button at the base of the form -- it does not appear on all screens without doing this, and you cannot scroll down to it).
If you do download via the above link, and instead navigate to the download page on the BMD website, make sure that you download DaVinci Resolve on the LEFT (the free version), NOT DaVinci Resolve Studio (the paid version) on the RIGHT.
For more information on the program, see my DaVinci Resolve FAQ video here: • DaVinci Resolve Free V...

What a great straight forward video without the fluff. Thanks.
I appreciate how there’s no ads, thanks.
No problem!
You seem better at explaining the applications than the manufacturers LOL
That's why they manufacture and don't focus on explaining.
He explains everything better. And at a pace we can all keep up with. He’s not some ego driven caffine fuelled wiz kid . We could save ourselves hours if we could get them off you tube. But that will never happen . This guy even helped me build a gaming pc. ME??? that’s how good he is .
Thank you so much bro! I'm downloading it right now. I've been keeping my eyes open for something to replace ShotCut with.
Yeah, i'm gonna be replacing Adobe Premiere with this. I've had so many problems with them over the years and it only seems to be getting worse at this point. Adobe is not with my money nor my patients.
Thanks for making a video on this. I've been looking for decent software to edit my videos with forever and you've made a really nice demonstration of just that. Thank you!
Thank for the tips Ringo. My band mates are raving about our latest video and it never would have happen without your help.
Thanks for the reminder. I had this program - circumstances precluded its use. Now transferring v14.
You made a pleasant and effective presentation. Thank you.
Thank you very much for this video! I have was using Adobe Premiere for 3 years when i was studding Animation. I have now completed my course and thus i would need to pay to continue using Premiere. Premiere is a fantastic editing software but expensive. DaVinci Resolve in my opinion is just as capable as Premiere but has one thing going for it that Premiere does not. User friendliness! Easy to use and hassle free. I recommend DaVinci Resolve to anyone serious about video editing. You will discover small features that you wont be able to live without. Thank you again for shearing :)
Excellent video, Im gonna try this since I do lots of videos in 4K
Hey Bro, Don't talk down to yourself like that. believe in yourself and don't let nobody change your mindset of that!
Nice! good to know that there is a competitor to hitfilms and Blender.... Personally I use blender and love it! I just wish making text overlays wasn't so technical XD
The main problem with the Blender VSE is it is not multithreaded... I have a six core processor so I have to wait nearly 6x longer to render the video :( Also transitions and effects are not very intuitive and quite limited. But I LOVE Blender otherwise, it is such powerfull and feature rich piece of SW. And even free!
Jan Kadeřábek There's now an add-on called Blender Power Sequencer that along with many other features adds multi-threading support. ua-cam.com/video/LJQptYvXAnw/v-deo.html
I hope that the previous comment didn't get deleted because it had a link :v
i had to install a hard drive onto my computer. the other one was crapping out on me. this software is what i used to add videos on my channel. im so happy to have it back onto my computer to edit my videos. thank you for the video to remind me how i first downloaded this software.
Here are a couple of reasons why DaVinci Resolve is not a proper replacement for Adobe Premiere or similarly capable video editors:
- outrageous system requirements. It reserves 4.5GB of memory just for loading the GUI with nothing going on which pretty much smells like horrible code optimization
- Win10 incompatibility by throwing QT-decoder error which leads to the next problem:
- no native file format support. it relies instead entirely on Quicktime which is not just massively limited in its file format support, but also deprecated. all the issues in this comment section of people not being able to open popular video formats are due to this issue
- no full support for popular video formats such as AVI, MKV, OGM or frameservers. the entire program is built to support high-quality content only, that means content from camcorders. you won't be able to load any files from video capturing software like fraps or obs into it thanks to that which is outright ridiculous. also, the lack of full support also means that SOME files MIGHT work while others will fail
- no indicator of why some files aren't supported as they aren't even displayed within the program
All in all, this is only useful for those trying to edit raw camcorder footage. If you're trying to use your old AVI, VOB, MKV, OGM, MP4s with all sorts of different codecs then you're better off with a proper video editor that isn't so barebones as Davinci.
I just wasted an hour finding all that out and trying to get this to work. I would have appreciated it if the video would have gone more in-depth regarding obvious issues like file format support instead of limiting itself to only three of them.
I did, I think, make it clear that Resolve is targetted at the pro market, and hence handles all pro formats (which it does), but not all consumer ones. On memory, yes, it eats it up -- but so too do other pro editors . . .
"I did, I think, make it clear that Resolve is targeted at the pro market"
Phrasing. You called it a "high end video editor" which can relate to all kinds of things like its features. Seeing how you repeated their marketing hogwash regarding their use in "Hollywood" (which goes for every popular non-linear editor btw), the entire context rather implies that you mean its features by that.
The "professional video editing" line you read on their webpage is merely marketing as well, as there's no clear definition what that entails. Producing TV programs certainly is one of them and they need all kinds of formats each day, especially if internet footage is being used. None of which is supported. Besides, Premiere is a "pro editor" as well, so is Hitfilm 4 and they all support widely used formats.
"On memory, yes, it eats it up -- but so too do other pro editors . . ."
Can you even name one that eats 4.5GB just by loading its own GUI without even having a project loaded? Premiere and Shotcut only use 250MB. Hitfilm 4 also only requires a few hundred megs. I don't have Final Cut ready to check its startup usage, but seeing that it's minimum requirements only list 4GB it will most likely not need more than Premiere. Same goes for Avid.
That editors need more memory during editing and especially when encoding the project is a given, but Resolve wastes gigabytes of valuable memory for nothing, only to require even more memory down the road for tasks that could be done much more efficiently. On my 8GB machine I can edit 1080p content in Premiere just fine and even edit and encode up to 8K content with Avisynth and x264. In Resolve I couldn't even finish a 1080p edit, let alone export it due to its absolutely inefficient design.
You also didn't touch on how future-proof this editor will be. Seeing that it entirely relies on the now obsolete Quicktime framework and considering that its developers didn't even care to address the issue of Apple's ceased Windows support could mean that Windows users could be left in the dust in the future. For Windows users the only advice has to be to stay away from this piece of junk. It does nothing other software can't do, if not even better.
Xiaopang3333 We clearly have different views on this. :) I've supplied film and video materials for broadcasters since the mid-1980s, and in that context refer to a "professional video editor" as one used to make broadcast TV shows and movies -- which does certainly not include most VLEs. As a colour corrector, Resolve is very widely used professionally. As an editor, far less so -- but that is the market they are now also going after (and why a free version is currently available). Personally I still edit in Premiere a lot, but am starting to use Resolve as I am not happy to join the Creative Cloud model. But as with everything in my videos, this is just my opinion! :)
ExplainingComputers Well, I respect your opinion, though I think it makes for a lousy video editor outside a professional environment due to its many shortcomings ;)
Xiaopang3333 I actually think we agree significantly on this one. Resolve is indeed focused on professional environments and formats -- and is hence a good editor for those wishing to learn about the same. The broader problem here is that the pro video editing market has become a mess. Final Cut is now losing users fast now that Apple seem to have all but abandoned the pro camp, Avid still (in theory) requires approved hardware, and Premiere Pro has gone rental only. And it is in this context that Resolve is rising up -- if not there yet . . .
YOU are a live saver. i’ve been losing it trying to find one that works, and this one did. thankyou so much
This video makes me feel like it's 2012

Hi Christopher, many thanks for this very helpful and clear introduction to / summary of DaVinci Resolve.
I very much liked your overview of editing in the programme, and especially appreciated you pointing out that, despite its comprehensive, professional features, DVR does not yet have the ability to work with all amateur / consumer video formats, such as H264 in the MTS format.
Thanks again.
Well done video, i can't believe it's free, I'm going to try it today.
Great video, I'm a beginner, and this is the first DaVinci tutorial I could actually understand. Keep up the good work!
Thanks. You may want to watch my two other DaVinci Resolve tutorials. :)
gg
Very useful!!! Thank you!
+Maggy Woodley (Red Ted Art) Thanks Maggy. :)
+ExplainingComputers what version is it up to now?
And does it run on a Lenovo g50-45?
I can't believe literally no one is talking about how satisfying Nice tutorials voice softs.
Thank you. Well, blow me down ... it's 2019 and this is still available. Very well hidden and without this video I'd never have found it.
And now in version 15! DaVinci Resolve keeps getting better and better. :)
Thank you for the tip ... I normally use Adobe Premiere .. I downloaded and tried out DaVinci Resolve. With the help of some tutorials I was able to create, edit and export a multi camera 5.1 surround sound timeline with footage from 5 cameras and 3 tracks of Tascam audio. Very impressive, especially for a free application.
Great to hear!
OMG, THANK YOU SO MUCH! THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR, FOR LIKE AGES!
With your videos my learning curve will shrink drastically. Thank you.
Thank you!
I was using Windows Movie Maker (Since i don't like to pirate software) and this came in a good time!
Thank the gods for this, I was using premiere pro for my school project when the free trial ran out and I was struggling to find a good free editing software, this one is pretty good.
Actually, the intro is growing on me. Please do not change.
Agreed, I too love the intro.
Thanks for the clear easy to follow instructions on how to download DaVinci for free. When I originally went to there site I couldn't find the free download, so thanks again for the easy simple to follow directions
WOW. I'm doing an upgrade from my old Windows Movie Maker and this is what I need. THX for the Video :)
Just downloaded and installed about 30 minutes ago and I'm already editing! Seems like a lot of really great free software comes out of Oz. Oi oi oi Aussie! Thanks, amigo!
+John Ratko Excellent news. :)
great lecture, I'm leaving iMovie and move on to Davinci, thx a lot.
Excellent. You are entering a whole, new editing world!
You don't have to put videos on separate tracks and overlap them to do transitions. You can put them end to end on the same track, and drag/drop a transition over the point where the videos meet, and the transition will still work. After you drop a video transition, drop an audio transition on the related audio tracks, and the two transitions will be linked.
Yes, indeed, this works as you say. But I am an old-fashioned A-roll / B-roll film editor, and like to work with two tracks :)
Oh, okay. I just thought my tip might help less experienced users doing basic work, like me.
Very good point! :)
Just to trying to help others who are new to this, like I am. I learned the basics from your videos. Thanks!
For one second I thought this guy is Paul McCartney

Great video and what a fantastic software. Been playing with Resolve for a while and I love it.
Hugatry's HackVlog are there any watermarks from using this free software.
@@Sammy10100 no way! This is very high end. You probably knew this though because I'm replying 9 months late but thought I'd tell you anyway 😅
@@mrgedits4478 hey thanks 4 the late reply. But at least y got back 2 me. Thanks again. 😁. Scott.
Thank you for the step by step demo for us newbies
I gotta try this software. I'm using premiere pro. but I don't want to pay for that when the subscription to that is up.
Really... 350 odd MB, why is it the file, a zip file I am downloading is 1.6 Gigabytes?
I am so sad, because I did not know this software needs a 64 bits in the operational system, and mine is 32... thanks a lot anyway!
your still on 32 bit?
Marina Garcia Solorzano how do you know?
ua-cam.com/video/yV1ETLVK89c/v-deo.html
i found it and its helpful for 32 bit downloader..
The introduction was very helpful, thanks!
a 15 version of DaVinci is also free :)
is there a watermark?
I keep coming back to those basics videos because I STILL don't know how to properly use the software. I'm gonna cry
Thank you so much for this. I was told of this product by a friend. :-)

went through when I first started video editing, now it's taking a whole new switch and learning soft will only boost my courage for the
Latest version supports .MTS and .mp4 file format without any issues.

i've never been so much interested to comment on videos but this video is so helpful as i was looking for the best video editor forever. Now that I've finished editing 2 videos i think its better to share the result. Thanks for this
Many thanks. It sounds like you are settled in with DaVinci Resolve. :) But you may find my follow-up useful: ua-cam.com/video/TDGzWfwGgqg/v-deo.html -- and I'll be posting on on node editing and greenscreen in a couple of weeks.
it's so good.
i finaly can edit my video's, thanks for that
Thanks for your easy to follow explanations, one step at a ti. It makes learning less overwhelming!
sooo helpful i couldt find a good free video editor for the life of me
NOt free anymore
A true Wizard 🧙♂️ is one who learns his craft!
Just a small update, alot of things hsve changed in 2 years, with the release of Davinchi resolve 14 ( still in beta but shuld be our if beta in about a mounth) the h.264 audio problem is fikrd, an a complete audio editor is included, tha price for the studio version has allso dropped to$299..
Indeed, as I ahow in my undate video here: ua-cam.com/video/6ZhPgHp3TkE/v-deo.html :)
right missed that one sorry
I just got studio for free
Fantastic intro to DaVinci! Thanks for posting and quick tutorial.
When you're about to "Enter to Render Queue" it shuts off the program. I'm using the DaVinci 15, 2019. Is there a reason for this?
Sorry to hear this. I've not had this error. They do updates fairly regularly, or try an older version via the support page.
Thx Chris - from just watching your 15 min video above, sounds like Resolve is more like a painters pallet & seems to excel in that field - I am interested in editing the entire video together with fade in/out, text animations, catchy screen blasts, etc
DaVinci Resolve is a fully-featured pro video editor, though its heritage is as a colour correction application.
is it still freeee? help!
Yes, it is -- but make sure you download DaVinci Resolve on the LEFT (which is free), not DaVinci Resolve Studio on the right (which is a trial of the paid version).
Fantastic video on explaining this program, I am delighted to have found this and many thanks for such a well thought out explanation, cant wait to fool around with it, have a super day !
Do this have a watermarks?
No, no watermarks.
but i cant download :/ whats the matter? im mac/
You can get it from Mac appstore too :)
if this is for youtube there is an option to add a watermark from youtube.
ExplainingComputers At least davinchi has the common courtesy not to be sellouts and just basically scream "poor"
But still able to explain each stage in a basic manner. Honestly thanks man!
bless your soul! lol
It’s v 16 now, still a relevant vid, thank you so much for your teaching .
Thanks for the post, I didn't know there was a completely free version... I've tried other free ones and always had some kind of problem, watermarks, did not load properly etc. on my older Windows7 laptop. So I ended up buying Sony Movie Studio 13 and it works fine on my six year old machine but I will look into DaVinci Resolve when I upgrade to a Windows10 pc. Thanks, Moses.
Thanks for the motivation. I wasn't sure if I could do it, but I might try it eventually.
If you do, I have a video about the latest version here: ua-cam.com/video/XyzO2MTKwY0/v-deo.html
I didn't believe it when I tried it. Thank you for sharing
It is true. DaVinci Resolve is a great and completely free editor! :) I've a more extensive review of version 17 here: ua-cam.com/video/_bVBa4vF69M/v-deo.html
For MacOS it's in the App store as well.
im a newbie in video editing and i just downloaded the app for my mac.great video!!it helped
This looks exactly what I was looking for, and the review is very well done.
Thank you so much for sharing this insight on DaVinci Resolve! My Windows Movie Maker has been crashing incessantly and have been looking for an alternative. I don't think there are any better than what you've directed us to. I can finally continue pursuing my vlog thanks to you.
+Pascal Brun Wonderful! This is what UA-cam, and the Internet more generally, are all about. :)
I don't mind your system being slow loading. I just enjoy video editing tools no matter what.
This tutorial was well detailed. Earned a sub. I can confirm this is legit.
Welcome aboard. :)
I like your teaching style. If I had seen this then.... ah well.... there's still time.
THANK YOU MY BROTHER FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY AND ANOTHER FAMILY!!!
Thank you for the informative video. I will try this video editor. I am glad it does not have water mark and no time restriction for the video. I am using for the past month Power Director but the free version and expected that it has water mark. My videos have water mark. I am excited to explore this video editor. By the way, I read in one of the comments that somebody addressed you as Ringo, one of the Beatles members. Yes, you have a resemblance. 🙂
Love this channel! I learn so much and discover so much useful freeware
I always thought Resolve was only for color correction. Shows you how good it is at that.
+Folopolis Until a few versions back Resolve was indeed "just" a colour corrector; then they added the editor and are now trying to make headway into the editing market too. :)
thank you so much i have been looking for so long for a video editor!
Also, i downloaded it but it isn’t opening because it says my WinZip 21 has expired does that make a difference to opening the software
The message means that WinZip is no longer working -- so it is now a Resolve issue. Windows 10 should be able to extract the files. Or use a free utility like 7 Zip: www.7-zip.org/download.html
Woah, great video mate!
obsessed with soft design now and more obsessed with cool scales Nd stuff.
I can see from the video this won't work for me. I've only got 2GB of RAM on my 64 bit machine. Oh well. It looked very promising at the beginning. Thanks for sharing.
looks very sofisticated, thanks for introduction
hello! can't even download this. Do we just not have the right kit? says " could not find any open CL capable GPUs . is asking "would you like to review and update your DaVinci resolve hardwear configurations?"
Sounds like you have downloaded but cannot install? The message is I'm afraid indeed saying that you do not have an appropriate graphics card in your PC. You may be able to fix the problem by updating your graphics card drivers. Resolve needs a graphics card with at least 1GB RAM, manufactured in about the past 5-6 years. For alternative free video editors, see: ua-cam.com/video/YiesMpzFYf8/v-deo.html
@@ExplainingComputers thanks Christopher. you make this all so easy to understand... what's the situation with microsoft Moviemaker 10 ? I'm a beginner and not techy. who owns it? google says its not being managed my microsoft, yet it's still in the microsoft store. Also entry level paid for. do you have another video? Im thinking adobe premier .... adobe premier pro
cheers
Premiere sadly is subscription only now. My advice on an editor these days would be Resolve (if you can run it). If not, HitFilm Express (which you upgrade to paid later if you wish), and then maybe Premiere Elements if you want to pay. But Kdenlive -- free -- is good for lower-spec machines.
Windows Movie Maker is I think dead in the water, as far as I'm aware.
thank you for introducing me to this promising editor...i think my search is finally over!!!!
Thank you Chris. I really appreciate it and that was exactly what I was trying to do. No fuss and helping people get on with what they need

You're welcome!
You're right. Understand bit by bit, then try to make a simple soft. You will learn as ti goes on. Even if it's havoc, don't worry, co
As for me, everything is simple and clear. Thank you very much
Thanks for that video Chris, will give this a go. I like the idea of the colour correction tools. Time to change form iMovie.
If you like the idea of colour correction, you cannot beat DaVinci Resolve! :)
Kudos man. You kept it very simple and helped make the first steps in soft soft. Very Helpfull! Thanks!
Thanks a ton! I was in the market for a new video editor and I think this is going to hit the spot. Thanks a lot!
I feel like it's no exaggeration to say you are a godsend. I've been making my own soft since i was 14ish and since then it's beco my
Version 14 is up now, and it is faster to get to the free download, looks like they put the Linux version in the free versions also.
All true! :) Video here: ua-cam.com/video/6ZhPgHp3TkE/v-deo.html
Great video! thanks for the tip. Can you please tell me what software you use for screen capture?
All of screen capture is in hardware via an HDMI recorder.
Thank you for your reply. Can you please provide the name of the Hardware?
Keep em' comin' and thanks for all of the help!!
Awesome finally someone that whilst he looks like a tech geek he is easy to follow and understand. Thanks.
Was just looking for a video editor for cutting extra crap out of Shadowplay videos and didn't need anything professional but after checking about most of the free ones are severely limited, web based, or untrustworthy and then there's this one... Welp guess I am getting professional grade software to make a few gaming videos to show off game mods or just some things I found funny in a game. Thanks for the comprehensive video explaining the software.
Thanks. I've also uploaded a follow-up FAQ video that shows more stuff. :)
Good video!! sorry may i missed but, with the free version can you edit 4k videos? thanks in advance
It depends which definition of "4K" you mean! The "real" one, or the one in very general consumer-tech use. :) The latest version of DaVinci Resolve is version 15, and supports up to 2160p (ie UHD -- 3840x2160). It does not support 4K (ie video resolutions that are actually 4096 pixels wide, such as 4096x2160, as commonly used in cinemas). For true 4K you need DaVinci Resolve Studio. But note that the vast majority of "4K" camcorders or phones do not shoot 4K; they are UHD, whic DaVinci Resolve 15 will edit. :)
I've been looking for something like this, I'm going to give it a try. Thanks for the video ;)
Thanks Chris , will give it a try
Hello Chris. I have been using Windows 8.1 to 10 Movie Maker, which as you probably know is no longer available for new Windows 10 installs. As it seems I'm going to lose it because I have to format and reinstall Windows on my computer, do you have any suggestion of a free movie editor that isn't as demanding as DaVinci Resolve. My PC has Pentium 2 GB RAM 3 GHz 64 bits and no idea how much GPU (most probably very little). Movie Maker usually works well with very few glitches. For the time being I don't need much more than what Movie maker gives me: Cutting clips, adding clips, moving them about, adding music, title, credits and description, saving with and without audio, and not much more. I have 2 other similar PCs with Windos XP and Windows 7, which work more efficiently than the Windows 10 one (terribly RAM consuming BS if you ask me). If there was something similar I could use with XP I might be better off. Or is my only option to rob a bank and buy a top RAM; GPU monster? Thanks for any suggestion.
Go for Kdenlive -- I cover it in about 8 and a half minutes into this video: ua-cam.com/video/GmHAiUcAPwk/v-deo.html Ideally it needs 4GB RAM, but you may well get away with 2GB for basic editing as you describe, depending on the resolution. The trick will be to edit using proxy clips. I show how to do this from c. 3:58 in this video -- ua-cam.com/video/NRsXiRcaItk/v-deo.html -- this is an SBC video, but the Kdenlive setup is identical in Windows. Good luck!
@@ExplainingComputers thanks. Yes, I already have an external HD for saving my videos. I'll try the Kdenlive, looks good.
