It’s so nice to see this trunk again. Any time I used one for my belongings in the military I was reminded of how little I needed to live. Thank you Nathan!
Thanks for sharing your feedback! It’s always interesting to hear how everyone experiences the different pieces.
Great job showing your mistakes and problems you ran into, so the next person has a better experience.
Thanks as always for the feedback!
My footlocker from 1980 had 2 inserts. Makes it very easy to pull one side and get to what you want. Just an option.
I would probably do that if I built this again. Limits the amount of times your need to remove there whole thing.
I was just searching for a footlocker with the two inserts. That's what I had at MCRD SD in 95. They are a lot harder to find than the sigla tray with divider.
You’re talking my generation. The footlocker build wasn’t bad. I like your thoughts regarding the build. Semper Fi
Just getting into building, was wanting to make a footlocker and found your video which is exactly what I wanted. Thank you for making this video. Really appreciate it. Love the content
Good luck on your project!
Great place to stash your jelly donuts.
Indeed
TRUNK , LOCKER PLYWOOD. (that was the official military nomenclature). 1 EACH.
Noted!
Very good video even with a few flubs but it is how things go! I made an ammo box with rope handles to hold my axes and picks came out great! Thanks!
I'm planning to make another one at some point. I want to find some metal corner covers and maybe try rivets. I like the idea of rope handles!
You did great bro. You are always showing us mistakes and problems and explained how to fix it and that makes me like your video cause I feel that you are really doing your project hands on without any hesitation weather you make mistakes or have some problems all in all you are doing great for me, keep it up cause we are learning from you, thank you and God bless.
Thanks Francis! I really appreciate the feedback. I feel like it's a bit of a waste if everyone can't learn from my mistakes.
@@NATHANBUILDS everyone made a mistake and no one is perfect except God and we learned from our mistakes the best thing is honesty is the best policy when people see you made a mistake and you fix it they see how true you are to your self to your work and to people around you. 👊👊👊
love what you did, this seems like a good project to work on for old time sake, thanks, Steve
Thanks for the feedback!
Thank you for the video. I need to make a similar locker for a folding bike. I appreciate you explaining your mistakes (because that's what happens). The cut on your hand makes the effort legit compared to FYI shows.
Thanks! Yeah I tend to make more mistakes as my attention is devided between actually making the thing and filming it! Let me know how your project goes and shoot me a finished image on Instagram if you're on there!
@@NATHANBUILDS Mistakes, accidental cuts, and a little cussin' is always a part of projects. I'm suspicious of the cleaned up HGTV programs. Yeah, I'll send you the pictures after I'm done in a month or so. I already ordered the hardware.
100% agree. My favorite part of woodworking is solving the unforseen issues that come up mid project. It makes finishing very satisfying. Cant wait to see yours finished!
The video gave me some great ideas for building one as a retirement gift for a friend in my squadron. I enjoyed the post.
I really appreciate your sense of humor and I'm inspired by how you bounce back cleverly and efficiently from your setbacks and mistakes throughout this project!
🙏 and I love your rum!
Gold's kinda heavy, (lol) how would you rate this setup for load capacity?
Mine is very sturdy but I have not tested with gold bars😅. If you’re putting a ton in there I would use 3/4 plywood and maybe larger brackets or some strategic pocket hole connections on the bottom. Glue and wood is very sturdy though.
So practically speaking, it can easily hold 200ish lbs before I’d start to worry when carrying it around
Great video and plans! I hope to build this for my soon to be 12 year old son as a coming of age birthday present so he can have keep his valued possessions(away from his younger brother). Well done.
Awesome! Let me know how it goes!!
Great video, that turned out really nice.
Thanks- I am thinking about making another larger one with some of my lessons learned.
Awesome
Very nice I have a original footlocker and I might make a replica one that I can beat up and not worry about
Send me a picture on Instagram if you are on there. Would love to see what you come up with!
I am about to start this very same build. Just alot bigger lol. Gonna use for rifle storage.
Awesome, send me a finished picture if you're Instagram. Would love to see how it turns out.
@@NATHANBUILDS i will film it and put it on UA-cam. Dont have a Instagram
Any type of soft wood is going to look better with spray lacquer as a base
Awesome. I'm not sure, but originally they may have used an oil based paint. Kinda hard to find that at the local hardware, now. Not 100% on that, just something I've heard. It'd explain why you needed x5 cans... wood loves to soak that stuff up.
Yes, having looked at a couple of these old ones I think you are probably right. Some are also gloss finish. I think brushing on the paint is the way to go.
@@NATHANBUILDSseal the wood with shellac before painting, that keeps the paint from soaking in.
Can you help me I've got an old trunk just like that green one foot locker it's a 1943 and I'm wanting to restore it back to normal but how do you get the rivets out the things broke and how do you get the rivets out and where do you get a new lock to put on it
Hm, you will probably have to pry or grind them off. I'd guess Amazon for a lock or eBay for an old one. Good luck!
would you change any of the hardware if you are using 1/4" plywood?
Just rivets and I'd see if I could find metal corner protectors.
Hi trying to download the sketch up file. Do I need to purchase or download an app?? Sorry
Hey - you can download the file without doing anything, but to open it you need the free version of SketchUp. Let me know if you can't figure it out.
Dude can you tell me what are the measurements and what kind of hinges and latch plz
Check out the video description for all those details. Good luck with the build!
I can spray paint the wood before installing the hardware, but do I have to apply gloss before or after that?
I would add some sort of base coat if you're using soft plywood like I did. Then depending what style paint you're using you could either spray after to get a gloss finish or just go with whatever finish your paint was. I just didn't like the mat mine came in.
@@NATHANBUILDS Thank you for insight. I'm a beginner at this, but what do you mean by base coat? Like paint or a protective coat for wood?
Sure! The pine plywood I used really absorbed the paint so I had to do a ton of coats. I would probably apply some polyurethane or something first as a base coat so I could spray fewer coats.
@@NATHANBUILDS OH they makes much more sense now. Thank you!
Awesome project, is this strong enough for airplane trips?
It would be pretty heavy to carry around. You could definitely make a version that is stronger by adding corner protectors and such.
@@NATHANBUILDS Thank you Nathan, i wanted to make a suitcase for ventriloquist dolls
Depending how big you need (as you will need to balance weight vs size), this would certainly work for that. Good luck!
What size rivets would you use?
I have actually never used rivets so I’m not sure but anything should work. Just go bigger for more strength.
do you have written description of project?
Hey - check out the video description for right plans.
Do you sell these? If so where can I find your shop?
Hey - unfortunately I don't. I do include the drawings in the description if you want to build one for yourself though.
God I need to buy a track saw.
Yeah definitely a nice to have but I’ve got no regrets.
@@NATHANBUILDS "Buy Once, Cry Once", right?
Learned that lesson too many times
Where did you get your hardware?
Check out the video description for links!
What type of plywood did you use?
I used half inch, although the originals used quarter inch.
Just paint grade stuff
I don’t think they used screws on the original trunks. I think in my opinion they used nails. But all in all awesome job
Yeah I think a mix of nails and rivets. Thanks for watching :)
I’m making this for my boyfriend and adding Halo themed accents to it
Love it. If you're on Instagram seems me a finished picture of it! That's going to be awesome
@@NATHANBUILDS I will
Nathan were can i order a copy of the plans
Check out the video description for free rough drawings!
Nathan I saw the video but I want to buy a written plan To take to a carpenter to make the locker for me
I don't sell any plans but you can download a digital drawing in the link in the video description. It's not incredibly detailed but it has the dimensions and other basic information. This should be an easy project for a carpenter to make.
Vegetable and fruit holders
Too bad you sprayed the brackets and hasp OD. They would have looked awesome (nice contrast) to compliment the black U.S. on the lid
Good idea. On the plus side, the paint is already wearing off the metal pieces 🙂
@@NATHANBUILDS That'll give her a nice salty look. A question if I may? If I build one out of cabinet grade 1/4 inch hardwood, do you think I could add strength by using finishing nails in addition to wood glue for joining? Or would that be overkill. I've seen footlockers thrown from one end of a squad bay to the other and not do more than scratch the paint.
You definitely could and it would add some strength. Although I think finishing screws would be better for strength as they would grip more. The nails would mostly hold things in place. I think the edge brackets do a lot for the strength when combined with the glue. Good luck!!
@@NATHANBUILDS What dimension are your edge brackets?
Here is the hardware I used for this project. If links don't work let me know!
- Brackets: amzn.to/33QkqUT
- Latch: amzn.to/3kv6o0N
- Hinges: amzn.to/33MsVAh
- Wish I would have gotten a rivet gun or something like this: amzn.to/3kDa4xB
computer desk making
As in you would like to see a video on that?
I'll see what I can do :)
