Maybe it's because I'm a beginner, but I just can't tell what I'm looking at with this thick yarn. Luckily I'm doing fine so far, just watched to see if you do something different & I just honestly can't even tell. Looks like it helped a lot people, as I see in the comments, so good job.
I have crocheted all my life and I was having trouble seeing what she was doing with the dark bulky yarn and the dark wood background. it was not just you.
This helped me so much. I was always having that trouble and constantly ripping out rows and rows of stitches - NO more!! Thank you for a very clear presentation
I have had to trash so many sweaters and I couldn’t for the life of me understand why it kept going wide. the other videos I’ve watched did not explain properly. I understood I was adding a stitch at the end of the row but from the way others explained I thought I was adding into the cast itself not that the cast was the stitch. Thank you so much!! Very clear and concise video that explained every aspect of why this occurred and how to prevent it. You saved me one more headache
thank you ! Thank you! I cannot tell you how many projects I have started and ending pulling out because of crooked rows/ends. This was spot on and makes total sense now with the way you explained!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
For the first time, after making more than a dozen scarves, I made one with straight sides, both sides, and I am over the moon happy with it. I have 5 more to make for Christmas gifts and as long as the others turn out as good as this one did, I will never change how I make them. I'm using HDCs, I put a stitch at the end, chain one and turn. I then make a HDC in that first stitch that you are saying not to use. So either I'm misunderstanding you or it depends on the stitch you're using. (SC, HDC, or DC)
TY for taking the time to demonstrate and explain how to make the straight edge. Thank you also your hand and hook placement. Other fvideos did not consider these.
Thank you so much for a very clear explanation and tutorial...I am still learning so much about this hobby...I have been working on an ‘easy’ pattern for a month now and my sides were every which way but straight...I am trying again following your directions and I am finally having success...bless you for sharing❤️
Thank you so much for this video! I just watched a different one that told me to do the opposite of this and it left me confused because thats what i was doing! I’ve been teaching myself how to crochet exclusively from youtube and this is a golden tip i will NEVER forget 💕
Thank you so much for your very clear instructions. Learning to turn the work over to check for the right stitch to crochet into was a wonderful, new-for-me, tip !!!
Been doing that for years and almost gave up crocheting. Thank you! I started knitting because of this problem but now I think I'm gonna give it another go. Yay!
Thank you so much! I am new and have watched multiple videos and still was having issues. I thought it was just me having the problem with the turning stitch. I should have watched this a lot sooner!
Oh thank you so very much, this was clear and so helpful!!! I watched another video and it was different, worked I guess, but this way makes sense to me...thank you. I subscribed to you also....no more ripped out work!!!
Sometimes, I can't get a straight edge this way. Sometimes I can't get it the other way. Everyone's tension and little crochet quirks alters their work so if you're having trouble one way with wonky edges, try the other way 🤷 Do a small swatch one way and a small swatch the other way and see what works for you, what makes you proud of your work.
This was so helpful, I've only just started crocheting and my work was turning into a triangular shape. I'm still not 100% sure about which is the last stitch in the row.
At last a miracle lady has helped me with straight edges, explained slowly, could you help me I have all different coloured wool , can I crochet a blanket thankyou from many miles away in 🇬🇧 uk.
This has been a great help, what I’m having trouble with is my sides with a pattern that has a hdc ch 1 row ch 3 turn, sc row . Sc to end and go into turning chain of hdc row , ch1 turn repeat , I don’t know if I’m going into the wrong turn chain in order to keep my count right Should it be the second chain or the third . Help ☺️
Great tutorial, been fighting that battle of wonky rows. I’m curious, you started with 10 stitches across, when you stopped was there still ten? I was not able count them. Lol! Look forward to hearing from you.
I understand what you’re saying and the concept but having trouble distinguishing the V because of the super textured chunky yarn you’re using. Following pattern, designer says nothing about chain 1 counting as a stitch - just stitch count throughout. (Ch 61!p, then sc second ch from hook = 60. Always thought turning chain does NOT count as stitch. However, I like the no gap doing it your way so I guess I should count it as one of my 60 sc. Plain light color yarn always best for videos. In the meantime, am testing it out on a swatch so I can see the Vs..... thanks for video. Much appreciated.
Some designers count the initial CH as a stitch and others do not. I usually leave it up to the maker. If you like the look then use it as a stitch and if not do the CH called for in the pattern but then place the stitch you’re meant to do into the CH space. ☺️
This is a great idea if it would work for me. However, when I do this, my stitches in the row are decreased by one each time I turn. What am I doing wrong? Appreciate guidance.
Some patterns call for a stitch in the CH 1 (2, 3 etc) at the beginning of the rows. But other times the CHs at the beginning count as stitches. That being said, you are likely taking a stitch away at the beginning of each row or you’re forgetting to crochet in the CH 1 of the previous row assuming that is an actual stitch on the pattern you’re following.
I tried this on a chunky blanket yarn and a frogged it over and over and over again until finally went into that first - already utilized stitch - and now all the edges are straight. I'm so confused as to why this is the case. I'm rather new to crocheting so I'm trying to follow the rules and have drowned in video after video trying to get it right so I am clueless as to why the "wrong way" is working when it shouldn't.
It could possibly have something to do with tension. Perhaps the strength you use when making your stitches isn’t effecting the stitches as much when you place your first stitch in that space. Just a theory though. If you have found something that gives crisp, straight edges, then keep doing it! 🙌🏻
Uhh yea me too I’m confused now because one video says go into the very first and your’s doesn’t. And they both look straight...but also what if the pattern says to go into the very first stitch...then what? Do you work the last stitch into the turning chain or not!? 😭😭
But other videos say that skipping that stitch causes a big gap and that's the wrong thing, so they put into the first one. I've watched several of these videos today and they are all different so that's confusing.
I love the way she talks to you like you're an idiot. This is the video I needed. Because I'm an idiot.
You explained the mechanics of the process better than any other tutorials I have seen! THANK YOU!
At last!! Someone who explains CLEARLY Thanx!!
Glad you liked it!

Thank you. Can you demonstrate sc, then dc? For better edges?
This was so helpful, I've only just started crocheting and my work was turning into a triangular shape. I'm still not 100% sure about which is the last stitch in the row.
Thanks so much now I’m sure i will be more vigilant n able to get my edges straight

The foundation row is also great!

Thank you so much for your advice for years I had this issue now I wont thank you thank
I found it difficult to distinguish the stitches, because the yarn is so bulky. Could you demonstrate this with a simpler, more lightweight yarn?
Very helpful💕
nice explanation. plz give such tips so we can also do better work. **SWATI**
How does double crochet work? Do you go over to second chain
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
So tell me does this apply with the hdc and double crochet as well?
Do you do the same for half double and double?
Do we do the same with double crochet?
Where have youi been all my life?????????
I tried this on a chunky blanket yarn and a frogged it over and over and over again until finally went into that first - already utilized stitch - and now all the edges are straight. What 😭😭 this other video told me to go into the first chain for a straight edge but I have to go into the next one whatttt lemme go cry
oh noooo!!!! I hope I didn't confuse you :(
This is the way I always get straight edges and how I've always taught my in-person students.
Uhh yea me too I’m confused now because one video says go into the very first and your’s doesn’t. And they both look straight...but also what if the pattern says to go into the very first stitch...then what? Do you work the last stitch into the turning chain or not!? 😭😭
Im the Master of making new shapes😬🤨😆
Thank you
Thank you for the clear explanation. I learned to crochet back in the 80's and I STILL get confused.
I tried this and I get straight edges but it results in one less stitch every row so that I’m essentially crocheting a triangle. I’m confused…
I'm still a bit confused. It was hard to see where the chain one stitch was coming out of and where to put the hook with such a bulky yarn.
I ran this video through at 0.25 speed but your thumbs are in the way just when I wanted to see where to go. Regards, D.
But other videos say that skipping that stitch causes a big gap and that's the wrong thing, so they put into the first one. I've watched several of these videos today and they are all different so that's confusing.
