I love hearing your childhood memories about these games. They're so relatable for many of us. It's one of the reasons that sets your channel apart from many others in my opinion.
You've been gradually putting a lot more effort into these vids lately, and it shows! Keep it up, you're one of the most genuine challenge dudes out there.
I had this exact same experience during my very first playthrough of Red as a child. I finally got to the E4 after getting stuck in Victory Road for a week. Then I read the dialogue about starting over if I failed, and I thought I'd have to start the game over, so I ended up not challenging the Elite 4 until much later when my brother got a used copy of Blue, and the save was right in front of Lorelei (with only a Golbat and Tangela for a team). I tried the fight, lost (obviously), and discovered that my save data did not in fact get deleted.
Aerodactyl is my favorite fossil, even though I never use it. The thing always terrified me, when I played as a kid, because I loved my fire amd fighting types, aaaand that didn't go so great.
As a kid growing up with ADHD it was so hard to focus on things like school, so while trapped there for hours every day, I constantly just thought about Pokémon Yellow. Especially things like the Safari Zone, Elite Four, Silph Co. and the Pokémon Tower in Lavender were all just so captivating to me. Almost 20 years later and I'm still learning tips about the game. Your videos have become some of my favourite content on UA-cam. Sharing your stories about your childhood with Pokémon just sounds so much like how it was for me. Going through Rock Tunnel without Flash, trying to catch all the Safari Zone Pokémon, among others. I just enjoy sharing the similar experiences with other fans of the series. Thank you so much for the great content and allowing me to relive my childhood along side your experiences. I hope that my young kids soon will appreciate this game the way I do.
Algorithm commenting, gonna let it play through on my computer while I cook dinner. For the people who do come here though for the first time, please watch Scott is a pretty good Poketuber!
I have a fun story about Aerodactyl: When I was a kid, I thought that the secondary typing of a Pokemon only affected their moves and not their weaknesses. I proceeded to have 6 Flying types. Aerodactyl was my MVP after getting 3 Ancient Power boosts against Lance. Lance kept kicking my ass until that stroke of luck occurred.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Lol’n. I was pretty bad too. Literally would judge effectiveness of a move by the mons sprite/design. Cut on a Scyther or Sandslash made more sense than a Krabby, Thunder on Nidoqueen would be gimped, Tackle on an Onix was clearly superior than a Caterpie, Wrap on a jellyfish was weaker than from a snake but came with a small risk of inflicting poison (Toxic), and the damage of bite was affected by the mon’s perceived jaw strength. ... Oh and of course Electrode had the strongest Self Destruct because my perception was that it was its signature technique. (Dig for Dugtrio, Hydro Pump for Blastoise, Thunderbolt for Raichu, Thunder for Zapdos, FireSPIN for Charizard, Mega Punch/Kick were boosted when paired with the respective Hitmons and so on - signature move implying it was made to fit a mon but not exclusive to the mon as was the case for moves like Skull Bash)
I feel this nostalgia so hard. Pokemon Yellow was 5th grade for me, but man do I remember so many of my runs through this game. I think the reason I love gen 5 so much is that it emulated for me as an adult what original R/B did, with 150 brand new pokemon to randomly find, learn about, and have fun with. Brought back memories of seeing a pokemon, not knowing what types it was, not knowing what it evolved into, and enjoying the journey finding out.
I for SURE also thought I'd lose all my progress if I lost. I was so scared that I'd lose my Pidgeot with Gust, the best of all moves because it has a little whirlwind and whirlwinds are strong.
I love all the positivity in this video, and the awesome backstory of the experience you had with Aerodactyl. Especially since Aerodactyl is also my favorite pokemon since gen 1 games. I've always like dinosaurs and pterodactyls especially, so Aerodactyl being a powerful, fast, rare fossil pokemon just did it for me.
Your story reminded of the first time I made it to the league. My team was in the mid 40s and I couldn’t defeat Lance. My brother passed with a dewgong so I decided to try to use an Articuno because of the ice type and it worked.
When I was a kid (5 or 6) I thought the pokemon center increased status resistance. So I would heal like 10 times at it so I could "reduce" the chance that weedle would poison me.
If you use strength on the truck 69 times, the Buckingham Palace guard will appear and battle you with a level 420 Missingno. If you win, he gives you his hat.
As a kid i didn't know about seafoam islands I always accessed cinnabar via pallet town As such Articuno is my fave Of the trio of birds Because I never got to see it
Your friend giving you that lvl 100 pokemon and letting you keep it is an awesome memory. I have many great pokemon memories like that so grateful got to experience these games before the Internet they felt so mysterious.
The badge boost *feature* is fair play, and I actually wish they had something like it in other generations. Typically stat buffing moves are learned by pokemon who already have a high stat of what it would buff. Having agility actually do something beneficial for the fastest pokemon in the game I think is a good feature
I think badge boost existed until gen 3 or 4. The badge boost glitch though was an unintended glitch in gen 1 only, and it was fixed up until they removed the feature entirely. The crazy thing to me though is that they never mentioned it any of the games I think.
Fly on jolteon looked like the best call (besides mimicking something else). Due to its high special and your low special, I think fireblast would have been worse. So good call
Your poisoned Pokémon to see in rock tunnel idea is something I never of but honestly that’s genius. Like Jojo plot armor genius. I subbed on that immediately
When I was about 6 or 7 playing Pokemon Red for the first time I thought that the elite 4 was the trainers inside victory road. Also, my older brother convinced me that once your pokemon was level 100 that it died and it gets sent to the lavender tower and left your party all together. Needless to say my level 96 Nidoking named Richard is still in my PC...
That's so cute. Level 96 seems like a safe place to stop leveling up. Got a few levels to keep it safe in case you have to get a fight done or something.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon The funniest thing is I could one shot just about anything in Victory Road with Thrash. If only I had a chance to try it out on the Elite Four.
I played Gen 1 for the first time when it came out on 3DS. My two HS friends and I got Red, Yellow, and Blue respectively so we could complete the dex together. Since the games were so old by then we had heard how glitchy they were, and breaking them was half the fun. I glitched a level 100 Nidoking before Brock to plow through the game with, and we passed it around as we progressed together. I named it Seth after the broken character you get in the beginning of Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones. We also used the trainer fly glitch to get Mew, the fourth Eevee, and the first and mid-stage starters. Then we capped it off by using the old man to fight professor Oak. Fun times. Now we're all in different parts of the state and rarely manage to get all three of us online at once. It's bittersweet.
Too bad it's hard to all get online at once. It's a tough time right now to coordinate with friends too... Glad you're here though. Thanks for sharing your story.
That level 100 Aerodactyl story reminds me of my own first playthrough of Yellow. My first level 100 in that was my Venusaur, whom I loved so much because its Razor Leaf tore through everything (yay gen 1 crit hax). Seeing it effortlessly destroy Lorelei blew my 11-year-old mind. After beating the Elite Four I actually genuinely believed I was one of the best Pokémon players in the world... until I battled my cousin and his Charizard wrecked my precious "invincible" Venusaur. LOL
I feel like what you said at around 12:59 was the case, Ground types were meant to be this sort of glass cannon, they hit really hard, but that's why their often dual typed as Ground/Rock.
When I was a kid I was too dumb to figure out that you needed to go back to cut down a tree in Cerulean and was convinced I needed to move Snorlax. It took me three restarts of the game to figure it out but I didn't care because I had so much fun.
I didn't know about the mew rumor as a kid. (Small town Canada) but I was curious about the area so traded my friend for a ratata with cut and explored when I got surf. By the time the mew rumor came around I already knew it wasn't true
that poison type scouting of the rock tunnel is SO SMART. My story is actually about the old amber. As a kid, i was like 6-7 years old when i found the fossil reviver. I took it to the fossil reviver and it says "come back in a few moment" I went to ask my mom how long a few moments was, she said 3-5 mins. I waited in the room for 3-5 minutes. Then i went to ask my dad, and he said the same thing. I waited ANOTHER 5 mins and the fossil reviver still told me the same thing. It took 2-3 years for me to realize that all i had to do was walk outside of the building and then walk back to the fossil reviver.
These videos make me wish that I was young enough to experience this game the way that you did. I was around 11-12 when these came out, and I had access to the internet so there was no mystery for me.
Being a child with Pokémon games that give zero direction on what to do is another plane of existence. I once had a level 64 golem before facing Misty that my friend had traded me. A blastoise before the third gym. Stuck in pallet town for hours. Level 94 lapras at the elite four. Didn’t know how to switch Pokémon in my party in gen two and cried when someone swapped my croconaw for togepi at the 1st slot. Saw wild raikou and my brain assumed created a story that the developers used a tiger to move things around because it looks like it is carrying a bag, took a picture of the tiger, and somehow uploaded it into the game as I had never seen raikou before that exact moment.
Aerodactyl is also one of my favourite pokemon because of my fascination with flying dinosaurs. I think there's a pokemon out there for all of us to appreciate and this is one series that may be aimed at kids, everyone can enjoy it. I was just getting out of college when gen 1 hit...and many of my friends and I were playing right along with the younger kids. haha
wow great run!, When i was a kid i never used mimic, i saw it like a filler move, but it really can bring into the table some wild strats like the "spoon master bird", the weirdest thing that happen to me when i was a kid playing pokemon with a gameboy color was when my gameboy screen "burned" in the exact part where the text is dsplayed, so i had to play the game without knowing which moves I used, and beating the game by trial and error, also, my first languaje is spanish, so as a kid, that maked the games more challenging overall (and one of the reasons that motivated me to learn english :D ) . Cheers Scott, keep going with the good work!
I once played together with a friend and stepped into a wild Gengar lvl. 5 at the entrance to Mount Moon. We both freaked out. I caught it and it immediately became my favourite Pokemon. Since then I had always wondered how this could have been and every time I reentered Mount Moon I hoped so badly to meet Gengar again. It was not until 15 years later or so when I learnt about the Mew glitch and the big mystery got solved. After such a long time I again felt really lucky having set up this thing accidentally. By the way, I really like your stories about how absorbed you got playing this game. This puts an extra layer to your runs.
Glad you're enjoying the stories! Thanks for sharing yours. That's really cool that you found a Gengar. Any idea how you triggered that sort of glitch?
Gen 1 came out initially in 96. The year I was born. As soon as I understood how to, I got a Gameboy and Pokemon Red. Saffir was the name of my Charmander
I enjoy your channel so much! Love hearing the nostalgic stories. I was 12 yo when Pokemon came to the US. Nothing but fond memories. PS: I also thought the entire game would reset if I lost in the Pokemon League. My two little brothers traded me their best Pokemon (Charizard LV 73 and Sandslash LV 82), combined with my LV 87 Blastoise I managed to win the first time through...but oh my goodness! That stress and absolute fear of possibly losing my entire Team but also my brothers was tremendous. Thanks
One of the best parts of Pokémon as a little kid, mispronunciation of everything while still being an expert at the game, that was me and Pokémon emerald when I was little :)
Props on making a poll, and immediately acting upon the results in your next video. Also I freakin love Aerodactyl, it's not my favorite Rock Type(that being Crustle), but it's certainly up there.
Since comments are good for the UA-cam algorithm. Lightning doesn't often strike flying birds because they're not grounded, so the electricity doesn't find them a more suitable path to the ground than the open air around them. This makes the type matchup make no sense, but it does make flying Pokemon not being hit by Thunder make sense.
My reaction time for video edits is usually pretty slow because I usually am producing several weeks in advance while I finish edits on the current video. But with ads etc I can react really quick!
I found HM fly only after finishing the league many times. Actually, someone showed it to me. The truck kept my cousin and me busy. Especially once we heard the rumor that you need a Rhydon on level 100 with strength. This didn't work so we tried many other pokemon, on different levels with different HMs. Good times. Loved your nostalgic stories!
Funnily enough rock slide was actually my solution for Lance's Aerodactyl in my Charmander Fire Red solo run because it was the only super effective move I could learn for it and the flinch helped me get through without losing health.
WOW!!! This guy is great at the game. He really has a good thought process around the game and he puts together really intelligently done videos. The data and the methodology and stuff is rigorous and we trust his results.
I remember my friends and I playing Gen II, I had Crystal and they had Silver and Gold. When we got to Ecruteak City, we couldn't figure out how to get through the Ghost Gym! We all kept falling through the floor, being stupidly unaware of the pattern you had to follow. So for the next month or so, we just explored everything we could in the game, and each got at least one of our Pokemon up to level 100 until my friend, Kenny, figured it out hahahaha
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Absolute jubilation! Finally beating Morty and then having the entire rest of the game opened up to us was amazing. It felt so good to finally actually USE Surf outside of battle and face all the other gym leaders
@@cocomunga yeah it was just a month straight of us training our Pokémon like crazy. I think my friend’s sister had the idea that if one of our Pokémon were level 100, that was the “key” to get past the gym or something? 😂😂😂

Also speaking of Pokemon memories, I don't really have too many about gen 1 since my first game was actually Crystal. I remember one time as a kid I got stuck at the Ice Gym and had to get an older boy to do it for me at the daycare, and we had lots of tiny rumors about "secret evolutions" that I don't remember the details of. Also once when one of my older sister's friends was over, she started a new file and then saved over mine, all the pokemon and legendaries that I spent so much time catching was gone, and then I lost my Crystal cartridge too on vacation a little over half a year later. :(
I once accidentally softlocked my copy of pearl from fucking around with an action replay and trusted a friend to try and fix it. A few days later he gives the action replay back and says he lost the game just like everyone else reading this
I can relate to not understanding most of game, as (while I was able to read, I was starting to learn English and my vocabulary was very limited... I can appreciate how KEY WORDS were in CAPS, it made it very accessible to non-native English speaker).I remember wandering around all the places, so I found Flash before going to Rock Tunnel (I had more than 10 different Pokemon so it wasn't problem when spamming A in dialogues). I remember Cinnabar Pokemon Mansion being problematic (but I also managed to find key). I remermber how in Gen II (Silver) I was wandering aimlessly around Whirl Islands, it was simmiliar story to your Zapdos one (though I managed to catch it and it became my ace). Good times. Nice Psychic/Flying video btw.
Not Pokémon related, but the positivity in this video is exactly what I needed to hear today. First world problem, but I'd been beating myself up for getting one mark off of 100% in an exam today. Scott talking to himself about typing before the rival fight before the league made the original Pokémon theme song. “I want to be the very best!” 😂 Great video Scott! I’m a Gen 1 guy, so that’s one of the reasons why I love your videos. Growing up I had Red and my brother had Blue. Because I was a dumb kid, I actually thought I had to choose Charmander as my starter, so I had a level 100 Charizard. The most heart breaking moment of my childhood was when I left my Pokémon game cartridge in my pocket and it got washed and dried. I tried for months to get it to work again, but the game was ruined. I never had another level 100 Pokémon again. But it’s not all bad though, because I relive my nostalgia through all my favorite Poketubers. Thank you for the content!
Only used my starter Squirtle on my first playthrough, and never ran from anything. It was almost 80 by Lavender town. Good run overall. Also, had to show the missus you used me for a vid, was like "woah"
Btw Scott I love that you use all type of moves and strategies, not just defaulting to the BBG or abusing one move for the entire run. You make great content, keep it going man
That little route east of vermillion that you said you never go to (AKA Route 11), I always thought those were electrical wires on the side of the path, because one of the trainers talks about being careful of electricity or something like that. I also thought the guard at cerulean cave had one of those massive hats that the british royal guards wear as a kid! Everyone that played pokemon at my school knew of MissingNo, but no one really knew how to trigger it and there were rumors of it breaking your game if caught, I didn't hear of the item duplication until many years later. In my mind MissingNo was it's name, no one I knew at the time realized it stood for missing number. It was like this fascinating horror pokemon that everyone was both fascinated by and scared of at the same time.

In rock tunnel with your partner pikachu, if he knows thunderbolt or thunder, talking to him will temporarily light up the cave!
You've been gradually putting a lot more effort into these vids lately, and it shows! Keep it up, you're one of the most genuine challenge dudes out there.
“By the way, there’s a fossil race coming soon”
I trust in his integrity, but it would be funny if he rigged it so that the Helix lost
That would be funny haha
I had this exact same experience during my very first playthrough of Red as a child. I finally got to the E4 after getting stuck in Victory Road for a week. Then I read the dialogue about starting over if I failed, and I thought I'd have to start the game over, so I ended up not challenging the Elite 4 until much later when my brother got a used copy of Blue, and the save was right in front of Lorelei (with only a Golbat and Tangela for a team). I tried the fight, lost (obviously), and discovered that my save data did not in fact get deleted.
That is exactly what I thought when I was a kid when seeing him at Cerulean Cave! I am so glad I am not the only one!
babe wake up scott’s thoughts just posted
Wake up an idea floated by?
Aerodactyl is my favorite fossil, even though I never use it. The thing always terrified me, when I played as a kid, because I loved my fire amd fighting types, aaaand that didn't go so great.
Your video quality has greatly improved since you first started! Keep up the excellent work! I really enjoy your content
Thanks! Watching my older stuff makes me cringe a bit. I'm so glad a bunch of people stuck around and helped me learn!
I'd love to see nuzlockes, those are always unique and intense
Coming soon.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon have you thought of releasing episodes of nuzlocks? And how soon? Can't wait!
I love your way of saying how you did this instead of the normal humorous way. I like how this is a story and a how to at the same time.
Algorithm commenting, gonna let it play through on my computer while I cook dinner. For the people who do come here though for the first time, please watch Scott is a pretty good Poketuber!
I have a fun story about Aerodactyl:
When I was a kid, I thought that the secondary typing of a Pokemon only affected their moves and not their weaknesses. I proceeded to have 6 Flying types. Aerodactyl was my MVP after getting 3 Ancient Power boosts against Lance. Lance kept kicking my ass until that stroke of luck occurred.
I didn't even realize Pokemon had second types. I was just like, "it's green, must be grass." haha
Scott: Noooo you can’t just use the badge boost glitch
Jrose: Haha stat boost go brrrrrr
You see, the real way to move the truck was to transfer someone with rock smash from Gen 2, and then break the truck.
The 6th Pokemon in your party has to be Pikablu
Your story reminded of the first time I made it to the league. My team was in the mid 40s and I couldn’t defeat Lance. My brother passed with a dewgong so I decided to try to use an Articuno because of the ice type and it worked.
When I was a kid (5 or 6) I thought the pokemon center increased status resistance. So I would heal like 10 times at it so I could "reduce" the chance that weedle would poison me.
What's Scott's girlfriend going to think that it took 3 tries to get this posted??
If you use strength on the truck 69 times, the Buckingham Palace guard will appear and battle you with a level 420 Missingno. If you win, he gives you his hat.
True I have done this
Actually got a laugh out of me. Well done.
I love the nostalgia dive you take on this one. Cheers, my friend.
As a kid i didn't know about seafoam islands
I always accessed cinnabar via pallet town
As such Articuno is my fave Of the trio of birds
Because I never got to see it
Your friend giving you that lvl 100 pokemon and letting you keep it is an awesome memory. I have many great pokemon memories like that so grateful got to experience these games before the Internet they felt so mysterious.
The badge boost *feature* is fair play, and I actually wish they had something like it in other generations. Typically stat buffing moves are learned by pokemon who already have a high stat of what it would buff.
Having agility actually do something beneficial for the fastest pokemon in the game I think is a good feature
what exactly is the badge boost feature?
I think badge boost existed until gen 3 or 4. The badge boost glitch though was an unintended glitch in gen 1 only, and it was fixed up until they removed the feature entirely.
The crazy thing to me though is that they never mentioned it any of the games I think.
Fly on jolteon looked like the best call (besides mimicking something else). Due to its high special and your low special, I think fireblast would have been worse. So good call
Time to watch the whole thing again!
Your poisoned Pokémon to see in rock tunnel idea is something I never of but honestly that’s genius. Like Jojo plot armor genius. I subbed on that immediately
No matter how often it's uploaded i will leave a comment!
Sabrina simps have to stick together after all xD
We do! xD
First off I’d like to say congratulations because this the first Aero challenge I’ve seen
Kabutops and Aerodactyl teaming up in that one Pokémon movie always makes me smile.
I just liked it.
I wouldn't have known Flash was a thing either in Gen 1, but I got a game guide with my copy of Yellow, and I'd read it when I couldn't play.
Gonna watch the whole thing again to help the algorithm out for you 💪😤 love your videos man!!!
Legend!
LOL
To this day I've never beaten Giovanni on Yellow. I was pretty noobish back then lol
You are steadily improving the quality of your videos mate. Hat's off.
Watching again!! Love the content.
I feel like what you said at around 12:59 was the case, Ground types were meant to be this sort of glass cannon, they hit really hard, but that's why their often dual typed as Ground/Rock.
Would love to see a Snorlax run in the future
You'll be happy next Sunday.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon literally saw that on the video. My shot in the dark is level 64. Thanks for Radicate! I feel apart
I took it to the fossil reviver and it says "come back in a few moment"
I went to ask my mom how long a few moments was, she said 3-5 mins.
Thanks
Dude I'm so glad to see your channel gain some momentum! Keep up the awesome work!
I thought the same about the Cerulean Cave guard. Thought it was a big hat. Comments are good for the UA-cam algorithm
I had My own wierd methods of exploring and combat misunderstandings, its part of the nostalgia. Thanx for sharing, good vid. Always liked Aerodactyl
Damn that is crazy!
That's so wild. What feeling did you experience when you figured it out?
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Absolute jubilation! Finally beating Morty and then having the entire rest of the game opened up to us was amazing. It felt so good to finally actually USE Surf outside of battle and face all the other gym leaders
Wow you must have played a ton to get a level 100 that early.
@@cocomunga yeah it was just a month straight of us training our Pokémon like crazy. I think my friend’s sister had the idea that if one of our Pokémon were level 100, that was the “key” to get past the gym or something? 😂😂😂
i love your comments from when you were a kid experiencing pokemon! especially when you said you thought you had to start the game all over again haha!
2:40
I don't recall when Dudunsparce and Overqwil came out in relation to this video, but you definitely got what you wanted!
Hearing about such forgiveness of yourself allowed me to feel good about the score I did get- so thank you.
You’re welcome BunnyKeepsGoing! I’m glad the positivity was just what you needed.
Dude that Pokémon Yellow opening music and scene with Pikachu brought back SOOO MUCH MEMORIES, back to 2001 when I was 6 and first played this. Good times…
Such good times!
I really liked your anecdotes. It made the video a bit more engaging than a typical pokemon video
Yeah, trying to bring something a bit different to the challenge genre. I like playing through the game, and I like watching people play through the game, but I just also have this urge for Pokemon discussion and community. I figured a video like this might be a place to start.
Thanks so sad :( You're welcome for the content! More coming soon!
I also have never ever been able to see the dude guarding the cave as anything other than a brittish palace guard.
I like how your commentary and confidence has grown since the first videos. Love the Canadian humour! Fan from the UK
I promise to continue growing! It's been quite the journey!
You make great content, keep it going man
Thanks so much Maravillante!
The story of your friend and the aerodactyl was really really sweet! He seemed really kind to do that for you!
You’ve become one of my favorite Pokémon UA-camrs. All info, interesting content, and you manage to do with it without being cringe. If you ever decide to stream these attempts on Twitch, I’d instantly sub.
I may stream in the future. I'm always considering it... Twitch > UA-cam for this sort of stream?
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon I imagine the earning potential would be higher, with subscriptions, bits, etc. On the other hand, it’ll be some work building up your base on a second medium. Definitely worth looking into it and seeing it if makes sense for you.
Either way, I’ll be watching!
