Exploring the DINGLE Peninsula - DINGLE Town and Epic Slea Head Drive!

  • The Dingle Peninsula is home to one of Ireland's most epic and scenic roads the Slea Head Drive. In this video, we visit the only town on the peninsula, DINGLE for some charming colourful buildings, excellent nightlife and food.
If you missed part 1 we drove the Ring of Kerry in a day with more stunning locations and attractions so do check that out!
Spending the night in Dingle town, we got to feel the charm and tradition of Ireland. Colourful shops, pubs and B&Bs make this an exciting and delightful place to stay.
Join us as we have a few drinks in Dick Mack's, the Dingle pub and end the night in An Droichead Beag for some toe-tapping accordion music and Guinness.
Starting our drive in a clockwise route the next morning, we hug the coastline and soon arrive at Fahan and the Beehive Huts. There are two places to stop, the second is larger and has better facilities if you need the toilet on route. (Probably the last stop before you have completed the Slea Head Drive)
The road starts cutting into the cliff face and the narrow winding roads become challenging, especially if you meet a car coming in the other direction.
There are various stopping points where a few cars at a time can pull in safely. The Slea Head Cross is one of those.
Dunquin, near the ferry's entrance, has some stunning walks along the rugged coast. Take a detour off the Slea Head route follow the signs for the ferries and you will soon arrive!
In all, you could drive round in about an hour but with all the stops you need to do expect to spend at least 3 or 4 hours on this amazing drive.
Back in Dingle, there is a second attraction that many forget or don’t see on a tour. Conor Pass. Heading out of Dingle north you start to climb the hills quickly and your ears soon pop as you rise up over 2000 ft.
Conor Pass on a good day ( we had a bad wet day) offers panoramic views across Ireland. Top tip: don’t just stop at the top and come back into Dingle, carry on the drive all the way back down before it re-joins the N86 near Camp. You won’t regret it!

We did both 8 years ago. In fairness we saw much more of Dingle than we did Ring of Kerry. That said, the best part of our entire trip, and still one of our most fond travel memories is Skellig Michael. We drove only as far as Waterville on RoK to catch the ferry. On Dingle we drove the Slea Head drive. Then the next day we drove up Connor Pass, to Camp, then through Caherconree Pass, where we hiked to the Iron Age fort, and then a stop at Inch Beach. I'd recommend both because I really can't choose one.

We asked Which was more stunning? Ring of Kerry or Dingle Peninsula.....
The narrow winding roads of the Slea Head Drive were fun and challenging, it was very hard to decide which was more stunning. For us the town of Dingle, the tradition and charm just had the edge. Both are fantastic and we want to go back and see more....... What about you? ..... Which did you prefer.... let us know below? Happy Travels!

Awesome tour of an amazing area that I hope to visit one day! Such a raw landscape clinging to the edge of the continent. My great great grandmother left Dingle in 1856 at the age of sixteen to work in the mills at Lowell, Mass. I was born 104 years later twenty miles away. Cheers & safe travels!

MemorySeekers yes! I have an Airbnb also up along the coast in Donegal for a few days as well and paid $60/night. The one in Dingle is slightly higher but only $90/night and right on the coast. I’m glad you mentioned driving clockwise in your video-because some of those roads hugging the cliff is terrifying.

Glad you went o Dick Mack’s and the Little Bridge pub in Dingle, but for music how could miss O’Sullivan’s Courthouse Pub? Tommy on guitar and a parade of great musicians playing with him each night-the best music in Ireland!

Those bottles on the wall of Dick Macks are Irish whiskey. It's worth ordering a dram because plenty of them are not sold outside Ireland. The pub has twice won Ireland's best whiskey bar award. Don't miss Conor Pass whatever you do. It is only 20 mins from Dingle and offers a real heart in the mouth driving experience.

As for which peninsula is better well Iveragh is prettier and Dingle is more spectacular. Why not see both ? It would be no trouble at all to spend a week between the two.
