My high school doesn't report weighted GPAs but i'm in the IB program with a unweighted 3.88 GPA
Will that meet the ivy league benchmark?
Hey Josh I got 3.77 and 3.9 GPA freshman year. I’m going to take 2 honors classes this sophomore year. If I get a 4.0 or more gpa for the next 3 years. Will Ivy Leagues like the improvement in my gpa? I want to go to either UPenn or Yale
Though you point out some good points, like challenging yourself with AP & Honors classes is appealing to admissions officers, Colleges will not throw out you application if you dont meet an arbitrary benchmark. People from my school have gotten in to UPenn, Princeton, and Darthmouth with a 3.3 - 3.7 UW Gpa. They have an upward trend in their GPA (low in freshman and sophomore but 4.0 in junior and senior). While having higher GPAs helps, be aware that almost everyone applying has them, and truly it doesnt define an application as long as you show that you have been improving yourself or challenging yourself. (They also had high SAT scores so that was another validation to their effort)
I’m 11....why am I watching this
idk bro
Me neither
I'm 12.... why am I watching this?
I’m 11 too
The Poem And Their Power sammmeeee
Easy. You gotta be smart like Einstein
Except not easy.
Omg this video makes me scared for college in let's see 7 years. Yale is my dream school so I'll do anything!!!
i will sell my soul to get into yale
Do you live in ct nh
Yale: I wanna except Josh, I’m sure he’ll be successful.
Josh:I wanna be a UA-camr
Tiger Roar37 accept*
U mean accept
😂😂
What if your school's highest possible GPA is a 4.0, even with AP courses?
That will obviously be considered, then.
nobody :
me, 12 yrs old and is still awake at 4 in the morning : give me the APsss
Same but I’m 13, I don’t think I will ever make it into Yale but all I need to master the most is math cuz I suck
Taking 6 AP classes my junior year i start the 16th i know it starts on a wednesday 😞 Wish me luck 😂🤞🏽
Btw Love the videos 👍🏽❤
You got this!!
Congrats, you got through!!
how did u score?
Lg Marquez HOW WAS IT
Truly don’t understand how you manage to take so many AP classes. I’ve had 2 this semester and I spend usually 3 hours per night on homework plus around 10 on the weekends. English takes up the most of my time though, with 2 of the hours coming from that.
I really don't understand that. I go to a top public HS (top 15) and took 4 APs last year and got all As with around 1-1.5 hours of homework/night. What could possibly be taking so long..?
Share your secrets, I'm struggling with 2.
Lmao I'm taking 5 this year and cannot keep us as much as I try. Guess I was lucky last year. Would not recommend BC Calculus
Caitlin I’m taking 6 as a sophomore and I usually have 0-1.5 hours of hw per day
Im in 8th grade and watching this
lol

Yo me to next year I am a freshman in high school

It’s never too early to start

I both feel stressed out, and very prepared for the rest of my high school career, and I’m only a freshman

Dude, keep doing what you're doing, this is such good stuff. VERY helpful and motivating as well as specific to everyone's needs. My school's system is on 4.0 unweighted, 5.0 weighed scale. We have academic classes, which are 4.0 classes, and Pre-AP/AP are 5.0 classes. As of rn I have a 3.92 going into sophomore year, with a 4.46/5.0 GPA. should I be fine?
Hi Josh! I understand you probably won't get this but you have been a HUGE inspiration for me. My dream is to get into an ivy league school, and I believe I am setting the paths for that. I'm currently applying to get into a college course high school that also revolves around music. Of course, there are times where I don't know if I can do it. I'm a 3.5 GPA student, and that puts me down sometimes, but you have honestly motivated me to study, and try harder, and I'm hoping for that 4.0! :)
I love how you said you took AP classes when you didn't necessarily enjoy them...currently me with AP Chem and AP Physics C
AP Chem is fun wdym.
I feel very fortunate to have attended a high school that provided well over 25 AP classes, so I never felt like I was forced to take a course for the GPA. Even though I'm not a big science guy, AP Chem was one of my favorite classes I've ever taken, and social studies doesn't stick with me but AP Comp Gov is really fun.
Basically, if you're debating if you should take a class just to get the GPA boost, try it anyway. Worst case scenario, you switch into another class, but at least you know
Honestly, this video is very subjective. You can talk about what your grades were in high school but you can’t determine what the “GPA cut-off” is with colleges like Yale. The average GPA at Yale is a 4.19, Harvard is 4.04, and Princeton is 3.9. So there is no way to tell how the admission officers determine what a good GPA is, especially as specifically as you did.
Ben Martin is that weighted or unweighted?
Rebecca Kaiser weighted
Dagfinn pretry sure it's average gpa in the campus, so the average of the student's who are currently there
pretty sure that's unweighted because no way could that be the average of a 5.0 weighted scale
its unweighted but some students send weighted scores because what yale would be saying is that our students averaged a 91 in their class which is good, but not enough for ivy league.
He was apart of that whole Yale thing
I know junior year is supposed to be the most important year to keep your GPA up for college applications, but I did very poorly compared to freshman and sophomore year. If I improve my grades senior year, will that make up for a rough junior year? (PS, I'm not applying to Yale, but I find your videos really helpful for applying to other competitive colleges.)
Colleges only see your first semester senior year grades, so they won't do a lot in boosting your GPA. I would focus on strengthening the other aspects of your application.
Loved the enthusiasm in this video! My friend got into Yale and she applied an hour before the deadline, we have her go away party today, so sad to see her leave :( I think you two have the same major, it'd be cool if you guys met up! Can you make a dorm room tour or a college home essentials video?
Cool! I can definitely make a dorm tour video!
At my school we don't have weighted GPA, so it works the other way. People avoid AP classes because they bring your GPA down. A lot of the people who want to be valedictorian take the minimum amount of AP classes you need to be valedictorian (one) and then just take regular classes. Honors classes don't really exist, you just do the regular class and then have some extra assignments.
I’m pretty sure colleges will re-calculate grades based on their scales so AP classes would help.
Thank you very much. I'm a student in Taiwan local highschool and what you tell me about AP classes is helpful.
THANKS!
hey Josh, quick question. i have a 4.7 GPA on the 5.0 scale but a 1270 on the SAT. what do you think colleges would think about that? I'm taking the SAT again but still
?You should be fine, but try to raise your score as much as you can.
Umm what? A 4.7?
Thank u so much for this!! I like to watch your videos when I need school motivation haha
I’m 10 and I’m watching this but I really want to get in Yale even tho it’s a lot more years until college stuff lol
What is the Yale GPA needed on a 4.0 (total) scale?
Were you valedictorian ?
You should make a playlist on your channel for this series 😊
I definitely will! :)
this was actually really helpful
So yeah, I guess you are pretty smart. Hope you are enjoying Yale ...
Can you talk more about how to make your resume look better? And also what extra circulars do colleges see? Do they look at like you in-school cubs as part of extra circulars? And what are some extra stuff you can do outside of school to make your resume look better? Thanks
On the Common App you have 10 activity slots where you can choose to put any activities or ECs you want. I made a video about which ones I used so check that out if your curious!
Josh Beasley , link?
Just look up it up, Yael.
Hey I am gonna be honest, I pretty much bombed second semester of my freshman year. I was at a totally different school in a new district
that was over an hour away from my house. I hated the time consuming car rides and the people there, so I pretty much lost motivation to be academically successful. Sophomore year my parents transferred me to a much closer high school where my old friends went and my grades have been phenomenal ever since. 96 average sophomore year and 98 average junior year (I had all 100s averages except for English, Gov and Band). I have always loaded my schedule with the most rigorous courses like AP, Dual Credit and IB. Do you think that because of my freshman year, my chances of getting into an Ivy League school is ruined? My friends keep telling me not to worry because my SAT score and AP test scores are great, but I would like to know your input.
You should be fine! I would definitely recommend mentioning that tough experience somewhere in your application though. The admissions officers like to see that you've overcome challenges.
Some schools like Stanford only look at sophomore and junior year grades so try applying for those ones too
Josh Beasley awsomee
I have a similar issue with my middle school grades on my high school transcript. I worked really hard and I’ve brought my unweighted gpa to a 3.75. Considering that I got another year and a half of high school, could I possibly get into an Ivy League?
Ethan C
I have this same issue! I'm thinking about summer school to try and boost my gpa up or something. I'm taking a lot of honors next year, aiming for A's and a lot of ap senior year and aiming for A's.
I love science and completed my sophomore year with a 97.3% in chem hn. I’m taking ap physics this year, and I received a 0/4 on my first summative assignment. I’ve never received a score below fifty, especially not in a science class. I feel incredibly discouraged, but I want to stick with the class because I love science. Why did I perform so poorly on my first actual physics assignment when I was the top student in chem last year?
Thank you Josh, thank you.
I have a question, how does the international student admissions work? For example - my school has AP classes and everything but those are only available to Grade 10’s+, and we don’t use a GPA or SAT’s. Can I still get in?
They only expect you to take advantage of the highest level classes that your school offers, so just make sure you're taking as many high level classes as you can handle. As for GPA, I'm pretty sure they take whatever sort of information your school offers, so if your school doesn't do GPA they'll just look at your transcript (I believe that's how it works but I'm not 100% sure). You will need to take and submit either the SAT or ACT. You can go to the college board website and find sat testing centres near you. I never took the ACT but I'm sure you can check online as well to see if it's offered near where you live. Good luck!
Love this serious very helpful can you also talk more in depth about your studying habbits because Yale university has been my dream school for as long as I can imagine and i have some additional question about your process so may I have your email to ask some questions thanks you
P.s. You should do a q&a!!
Hey Josh, I found that Yale's average GPA is 4.19, and I'm wondering which GPA scale is this based on? At my school, my weighted GPA is 4.83, but my unweighted GPA is 3.92.
I'm pretty sure that its weighted since unwieghted can only go up to 4.0 and thats the scale colleges use.
Do you have to have good grades or could you just pay more money
I would love if you could get someone who has applied successfully from an international student standpoint!😊
Hey Josh! So, my high - school doesn’t offer AP or Honors classes. My average is 87%. My high - school is private, so it’s WAY more strict than a normal public high - school. Do u think I have a to get to Yale?
I don’t necessarily aim to go to an Ivy League school, however I try to boost my GPA just to improve my chances into getting into the colleges I want. I too am taking loads of classes that I don’t necessarily care for, but I am fortunate to go to a large high school in a university town with a plethora of college credit classes and AP courses.
You pay off administrations, professors and you will be fine.
He was apart of that whole “Yale” thing
MsUsagi513 no it’s from American Psycho with Christian Bale.
Lmao
Does being from a remote like Azerbaijan increase your chance of getting in?
What high school did you go to in Texas?
How do you get higher than 4.0?
I want to get into upenn, but the GPA part is a struggle. I have had B's in math from 7th through 10th grade (in 11th now) and its severely dropped my GPA (4.0 end of sophomore year). I got the subjects, I just do poorly on math tests. Idk, Upenn has a great reaserch/science coarse and art program but I'm considering applying to rit instead. Is it worth it to still apply?
My high school's range of honors classes is often limited based on demand because it's a very small school. If I couldn't have honors one year even though I had it before, how do I let them know it was beyond my control even though I really wanted that course? And can you really explain one bad grade (sophomore year)?
What if your GPA is 3.6 but have a perfect score on your SAT?
I am a junior and i am currently taking 4 aps and my grade comes out to be 97% for my first semester do you think that is good enough for ivy league?
Go to school.
Behave.
Take notes.
Study.
Go above and beyond.
This is what I've even waiting for 😁😁😁
Thank you!
What looks better: dual enrollment English or ap Lang?
My dream college
Hello! I know this video is a bit old, but I just have a quick question. Will it hurt my admission chances if my school's GPA Scale (AP A+ = 4.62, A=4.3, A- = 3.9775; Honors A+ = 4.515, A = 4.2, A- = 3.885; Normal A+ = 4.3, A = 4.0, A- = 3.7) is proportionately less rewarding than the standard 5.0 weighted scale? I am a sophomore in HS, and I have a 4.32 for the semester with my school's scale, and with the 5.0 scale, I have a 4.36 (no APs offered yet). I know there is not much disparity now, but I fear the difference will increase when I start taking APs. Great content btw.
My high school doesn’t use a weighted gpa, so there isn’t really any way I can get more than a 4.1. What do you recommend?
What is website for apply Yale university?
Hey jw but i go to a prep school where u can only take 8 classes max. I take chinese(no honors or Ap offered) and orchestra and AP scinece take up two class blocks. Overall i can only take about 6 Ap courses in HS idk what i can do. Also, im a sophmore and the only way i fould take an AP now would be if i was way ahead in math or programming
All you have to worry about is challenging yourself with all that your school offers. Everyone comes from a different background and colleges understand that :)
Josh Beasley really appreciate your response. Goodluck at yale a teammate from my school is going there
Why am I watching this. Im 13. Oh well, It's my dream college in the future.
Did you mean 3.5 at 1:52?
Bro how much percentage of exam mark is safe to get admission in yale?
I’m a freshman in High school and I had a 95.15, is that good?
Will Yale help a career in being an author?
My school has a really weird GPA scale so I'm not sure what 4.6 looked like for you... did you get any A minuses or Bs in high school? Thanks so much :)
Hey, where can an unweighted 3.93 GPA in high school get me? Or does it depend highly on my test scores?
does avid really help because I got dropped? I'm moving schools and I don't know if I should take it again ?
Once you get accepted, your income or anything doesn’t matter, the Yale industry has so much cash they’ll pay of anything related with the college.
So i’m a 9th grader in high school and i’m trying to aim for a good college. I have (A)s, (B)s, and 1 C. Do you think it would still be possible for me to get into a good college like Stanford?
I'm only in middle school, but it's a private college prep school and they are already telling us that we need to figure out what we are going to do with our life and it to stressful for all of us...got any advice?
I'm a sophomore in Highschool with a 3.5gpa out of 4.0 and when they look for activities will that hurt my application later on if I don't do anything? I never cared much for any of the activities or clubs here. I just show up and maintain good grades. I'm not saying I want to go to Yale or anything I was wanting to go to Purdue for Aerospace Engineering
I could make a how NOT to get into Oxford, but I doubt that would get many views - UCL is still global top 10 though 😏. Its absolutely crazy how big the difference in admissions processes is between UK and US.
I am 11 and already know all about yale
How many AP classes did you take?
if freshman year you have a 3.9 gpa with no ap or honors classes but get a much higher gpa in later years.
So with the way my math school’s system is, I’m going to be taking Calculus BC in my senior year (I’m a freshman right now). Will I be able to put that in my college application? Or will it be too late?
Hey Josh, I am an Indian, and we do not have any AP classes or option to choose our own courses, it is a complete set to study, so, for getting in to an Ivy league, what should I do?
Is it necessary to get all a’s in your honors classes to get into an Ivy League? I’m a freshman and I occasionally get b’s and I’m worrying that it will screw up my chances of getting into an ivy leauge
what if our gpa system is weighted out of 4?
honestly the teachers one is true, my teachers are so nice about grades but my friends teachers are 😬
do colleges care about middle school grades? They're on my transcript and drop my gpa by a decent amount, as I took them in 7th and 8th grade. Will colleges take that into consideration?
my freshman & most of my sophomore year really wasn’t as good as i wanted it to be, but then my junior year brought my weighted up to a 4.0. do you think they will take this splurge of better work into consideration? or do you think there’s no hope?
Why would I wanna do that?
My school doesn’t offer AP or honors (small school) would taking duel enrollment help?
I’m from an asian country, our grading system is different here. i want to try to apply for the ivy leagues or the ucs, but i dont know how. although my grades are not that excellent, they are okay, mostly from 85-98. i am excellent in the writing and speaking field, like debating, theatre, and declamation. do you think i have a shot? and also, how do i apply. im gonna try to boost my application form by completing a book or something.
Hello. I am just a freshman. I am in all the possible honors classes right now, but for some reason my school doesn't offer Honors social studies. This lowers my unweighted GPA. Do colleges look at the possible classes in each school or just look at your GPA? I am in one of the best public schools in Massachusetts and maintaining about a 4.17-4.20 GPA but I can't take any AP classes because I am a freshman. Do they consider the difficulty of the school during the application process? I would appreciate a response. Nice video.
That intro song is clean 👌🏻
I have a 4.28 GPA but my school weights classes as 1.0 for college prep, 1.1 for honors, and 1.2 for AP. What even is that system
please send help 😭
Why does my school (5 point scale) say AP 5 and Pre AP 4.5 yet I have 4-5 preap(all a) and 2 ap(1b 1a) and my GPA is still a 4.2?
I just want to tell my parents one day that I got in to yale
I am 13, and my dream is to get into Yale or Berklee, so Wish me luck
Just A Commenter good luck man
I want to get into yale
Hello, i was wondering if i still have a chance, i'm a sophomore in high school, freshman year i didn't do well at all and i took almost all honors classes. I didn't do well because i didn't care. Now i care and i am no longer in honors classes, only one. I plan on taking AP and honors next year and senior year. But this year i am going to at least 200-300 hours of CS and do clubs and stuff.
Hey, so I have a question. I did kind of bad my freshman year and now I’m going to be a sophomore next year. I’m going to try really hard to get my gpa to be good. Will it matter? Like will it ruin my chances of getting into colleges.. especially that I want to go to Yale.
I’m an international student and I plan on applying to Yale, I have a 4.0 GPA but a very limited amount of schools offer AP in my country, the one I’m in doesnt have AP courses. How will this effect my chances of admission. (I’ m expecting an SAT of around 1510-1530)
I got into Yale this year and will be attending in the fall. My school is similar in terms of limited AP and Honor courses. I believe the Yale admissions officer told me that the courses you take are cross-referenced with the classes offered at your school. As long as you show that you are willing to challenge yourself and take the more rigorous courses (available to you), then you will be a good candidate. Hope that helped!
Lee Anna Thanks!
Do you think it is possible to get into Yale in an undergrad program after completing a bachelor in Canada ? I'm a french student currently studying international studies in Montréal and I'd like to specialize in gender and women studies, which is a program that Yale offers. Do you think having already done something helps (along with extra-curriculars) or not ? Thank you so much!
If my school doesn’t weigh accelerated (we call them accelerated at my school , not honors or preap) courses, only ap courses, is a 4.45 gpa good?
I have a really difficult Algebra teacher. She gives me a perfect A and then half way through the quarter she brings it down to a C and I’m not the only one with this issue. I have a friend that has the same scores as me and she still has an A. What do I do?!
I’m a freshman. Should I start taking AP classes in Junior year? Or should i start with AP classes in Sophomore?
early as possible, definitely my biggest regret. depending on which highschool you go to they'll let you go take as much APs as you want and you can drop the ones that are too hard first semester and it won't show that you dropped them. Talk to your counselor about this.
i live in England so its different and i dont really get it and i would love to understand because i want to go to college and university in America
why not oxford/cambridge?
i dont know i kinda want to live in America and go to university there
I bombed freshman year. T20 is completely out of the question, but will I still have a shot at an ok college?
Noah Hinton no
I'm a sophomore in high school, and my grades are usually 90's. Would it be better for me to be in lots of extracurriculars and have a pretty good average (overall 91% ish) or do very few extracurriculars and have a 96% or 97% GPA. I'm currently in XC, Indoor Track, Outdoor Track, Class President, Student Council President, Treasurer of our Athletic Leadership Program, Big Brother Big Sister, lots of volunteer work, I am on a board where members are selected by teachers in which we decide were money goes in the school, and French Honor Society, however my average last year was 90.2%. I also take some accelerated/ honors courses. Should I drop extracurricular activity and bring my GPA up to a 95%/96% or remain with a 90 - 92 average and stay in lots of extracurricular activities? Which would look better?
One more thing, does freshman year REALLY matter? Or are sophomore and junior year just really important
As long as you didn't bomb freshman year you should be fine. But even if you did, that could be an essay topic. :)
Josh Beasley thanks so like I had around 96 average freshman year overall is that good enough to get in almost ivy-league level school? Like if I maintain that 96 throughout my high school career?
Yeah, definitely.
Josh Beasley ok thanks
Marky Pants then you're trash
Jk
