Not only in the amazon river. They are pretty common in most of Brazil`s territory. They are incredibly common in large cities. It is great for them because their biggest predators like the onça pintada (Jaguar) - another incredible animal - do not roam in cities.
@@lkslokinhow It's illegal in Brazil and Chile, yes, but the various sources I'm reading all say there are several legal exports of Carpincho leather and year-round hunting for their meat in places like Argentina.
@I_killed_that_beard_guy hmm, not likely, they need a tropical climate to survive, you can probably mimic it in a big place but as a house pet it would be quite difficult if not impossible to keep it healthy
People think they have enough space but they don't. What's enough space for you isn't enough space for them. They need atleast 20 acres of undeveloped space in a place like central or southern Florida with wetlands and a variety of fruits and vegetables in their diet. They need this so they continue to be mentally and physically stimulated. Anything less is torture.
@@jaxstax2406 Well, getting informed on the specific needs of a pet, specially exotic one, is a very important thing to do before becoming an owner, not just a capybaras.
I live in São Paulo and there are Capivara herds in Pinheiros river. Once I was late at night waiting for a train connection near Pinheiros river, then large "dogs" came out of darkness to eat grass closer to the rail. Took me a few seconds to realize what that was in fact. A large Capivara family.
"you'd think that an animal three times bigger than a beaver would be a meat eater" wtf no you wouldn't, most of the world's biggest animals are herbivores. Cows, buffalo, elephants, giraffes, even hippos.
I don't recall hippos being herbivores, though it's not saying much since the only thing that stuck in my tiny brain about them is that I don't wanna be near one.
They're not actually ALWAYS chill. I worked at a zoo for a while, and part of my route was the capybara enclosure. The little ones would come and look as I was cleaning, and the adults usually just chilled. But once we had to catch one of the adults for a vet visit... @@Sanquinity I absolutely love them, do you think since we have a cow farm with land, we could maybe get a few Capys & any idea how many so they'd be happy? Or is that a bad idea?

They are pretty common where I live. It's fun cause they go around with their family, and even if you get near them at night they won't get alarmed because they are used to humans, they'll at best just walk away back into the rivers. Sometimes they will cross the streets with their pack, or just chill in the middle of it at night when there aren't many cars around
I think is better to take them to other place where they can be happier, if you dont want them to be eaten alive by anacondas, crocodiles, jaguars and eagles
One time I went to a flea market, and it had one of those circus-like stands that said "see the largest rat in the world!", and located next to a box was a binocular stand to look within it.
