For anyone wondering, here's the reason why the axe handles are often curved:
First let me get this out of the way - no matter if you are using straight or curved handle, the amount of force your swing has will not change at all. Doesn't make your axe hit harder.
What it does do is shock absorbtion for the wood and your hand. The curves make the shock wave that travels from the head to your hand clash, and cancel each other, so your hand receives less of a shock wave back from the wood (or the skull of your sworn enemy) with each swing. Makes you tire slower, and avoid injuries to the hand and wrist caused by less well-designed handle.
It is however kind of a matter of preference, and I heard many people swear by straight handles. Those are also more durable as far as I know because the wood grain runs along the entire handle and doesn't have any odd places where it has to shift sideways.
I always thought they were curved to reduce the risk of it sliding out of your grip...go figure
@@fdort3971 That would be accomplished by some form of leather braiding around the handle, if you want to get fancy. Or by carving a little ergonomic handhold. Or by making the end of the handle a bit larger so it doesn't slip out. All of those can be introduced both to straight and curved handle. But the curvature of the handle doesn't really do anything for slippage.

I am loving how we're seeing you literally look at this from start to finish - a lot of projects you do are awesome, but feel like there's a lot of planning before hand (and obviously a lot of the time there needs to be, getting materials, etc) but that has happened off camera, this feels like we're seeing your whole process, and it's awesome to watch.

I love everything about the doors! The Cricut is an awesome tool, I cut vinyl decals as a side hustle and it is my cutter of choice. I also use it to cut the stencils to etch the maker's mark on my knives. Helpful tip if you plan to do more etching, use a 50/50 mixture of distilled water and apple cider vinegar then add salt to the point of saturation.

Handles came out killer...with the doors.. It looks like the entrance of a medieval hall and as they open up and there would just be a giant table full of the meats.... Just awesome, blown away and inspired

Those handles are fantastic. Great idea, well executed. I watch a few wood working/ builder channels, but this is my favorite. Enjoy the self depreciation humor, not taking your self too seriously, but also not being over the top dumb on purpose. Mistakes are gonna happen, laugh, learn and move along.
Now that’s irony… a Pittsburgh Steeler etching an Eagle onto an axe head.

Cricuts are awesome for stencils to use on the bandsaw as well for folks without CNC routers. Particularly more useful when making multiple of the same thing, as you don't have to worry about tracing or perfectly matching a handmade paper stencil. Great stuff as always.
At 13:23, when you explained this process, it reminded me of restoration channels. My mechanics had a similar process.

to get a better result wrapping leather on a handle like that, soak the leather in warm water for 10-20 minutes. then wrap it, as it dries, it will shrink, tightening the wrap, and giving it a much better look, as well as being better in hand if it was on something you were actually using.
A cool product to spray metal is called Dull Coat. It's a flat finish clear coat(no gloss or shine) You can get it in a rattle can at hobby store. I've used it on building model railroads for decades.
John, those handles are awesome. I've seen the electric etching before and have always liked it. Beautifully done, all the way around. And Gimli (plus Thorin Oakenshield) would approve.

I think they make an attachment for the cnc plasma that allows you to trace something that it can then cut out. That would be a sick addition to the flow. Love your content, keep up the awesome work!!
I've made a pen plotter head for my CNC. Plotting is useful.

Not sure I’ve ever seen the eyebolt trick for drilling a straight hole. Brilliant!
Lovely job with the etching. I often etch copper for flight boards using acid and vinyl stencils, but another trick you can use the vinyl cutter for is for staining wood. I've made several wood signs without a CNC by prepping the wood with Shellac then laid down the stencil and hit it with some Gel Stain. Takes a while to dry, and might need two coats but the result is fantastic and with the stain you see the grain under the design.
Torching wood also leaves a super rad organic look if you ever want to try that instead of the glazing technique.
Got 3 doors to do for my house and it's cool to see how you carved them doors and make them handles, opens up alot of channels for me..very cool...
The curve adds leverage with the swing so you refrain from using a full arm swing

The curve in the handle is to reduce shock and build inertia if I member correctly. Same concept as a framing hammer.

Just a thought, but you could've welded a stud onto the axe head, drilled a through-hole with a counter-bore on the backside, and tightened down a nut into the hole on the backside of the handle.
Squirrely factor: 1,000,000. Pretty awesome looking build. Now I want to try power carving with my Dremel.
Chris fix has a really good video on etching. I think he recommends using vinegar instead of water. The extra acidity will help etch better and he also uses a car battery charger. It has more juice than a 9v to do more
Etching can be weird. Or at least plating can be. Etching is the reverse of plating. It's the same process but your sacrificial piece is your finished product when you etch. That's the difference. But more juice doesn't always mean better effect.

not sure if this might help but why not drill a hole through the head of the axe handle and weld a 1.5 inch long all thread to the back of the axe head. you would get the appearance of the axe with out to much squirrelly bits

I have a Silhouette that you don’t need a cut matt it just goes off the roll so you can cut as long as you want ,the longest I’ve done is 48” ,the only limit is your width of cut so you have to stick for wide items which I did for a world map on a 43” diameter clock I made 😜

You're giving me too many ideas, and I love it! These turned out better than I could have imagined!
Now u just gotta install automatic door closers on those doors since there are no handles to pull the doors in when you enter and it'd just be easier to have em close automatically. Also installing door stays/stoppers to hold it open would also be necessary.
Looks cool, though i would have lifted them up so you mostly use axe handles as handles to avoid messing things up. Also mounting options... using two part epoxy that mixes in the nozzle for couple dips is just wasteful as all hell. Just use basic 5min epoxy and put treads on the metal cylinder so you can screw it in from the another side. On axe head, could have done that from the get go with welding. If you dont have metal lathe around, just go check neighbor they out to be and take maybe 5 bucks to make 6 parts like that.
John I love your work. But you should have gone to a Pburg blacksmith and let them build the ax head for you. Thereby allowing you to seriously focus on and create the handles. The resin is such a low rent option and doesn't really fit the doors

One of the greatest projects I’ve seen and hands down the best door handles out there! I’m going to make these for every door in my house, which means I’ll probably be divorced in 6 months but damn, they’re cool!

@ 2:30, a clear reason why plasma cutters were invented. Expensive, yes! But in a shop this well equipped, its a no brainer.
John even has a CNC plasma cutter.
I find that the Xfasten woodworking tape is better IMO than painters tape and CA in most of my uses

I'm surprised at 2:40 you're not using mini magnets when tracing with spray paint. If you watch random hands, that's what they do.
