it's hard to imagine sabu being 57 now since i was hearing about him starting around '96 when he was pretty hot. but i'm sure all those injuries are catching up bad now. that's the thing when you're young: you think you're invulnerable. eventually, there's a moment where you wake up one day, you can't eat the way you did as a kid, you're far more careful getting around, you prefer low risk and all those things you did to yourself when you were younger really start to take a toll. i've had an injury on my lower back since high school and it never healed. but as i get older, the injury pops up periodically and sometimes takes me out for a day or two. i can't imagine what some of these guys must be going through at later stages in their life.

Ya'll are shocked he lasted this long?
Gypsy Joe was still no selling in his 70s, and while he wasn't as insane as Sabu, the man was still a hardcore nut.
In hardcore and deathmatch stuff, you either retire in your late 20s or early 30s, or you do it until you physically have to stop.

Sabu started travelling as Sabu the Elephant Boy and wrestled in the CWA. He has the distinction of being the only guy to hit his head on the ceiling of the studio while coming off the the top rope. He and his protege, Rob Van Dam, started as barefoot wrestlers too. His worst table break incident was in WCW and that table looked like solid oak or cedar. He bounced off of it at least twice AFTER his first match there. He also tore his bicep in that barbwire match against Funk. He wrapped it up with tape DURING the match. Fortunately, we were able to watch the program in Indianapolis on independent television.

Sabu is what brought me to ECW. I wanted to see this guy I had heard so many crazy things about. The biggest thing was that Sabu was a high flying brawler. Those guys didn't exist back then and the concept was fascinating. Even the modern wrestlers who took Sabu's stuff...they don't come across as brawlers like Sabu did. They come off more as gymnasts who do garbage spots that are carefully orchestrated.
However, I started to see more from ECW than Sabu. And quite frankly, his matches got kinda boring right around '96. Lots of leg drops and leg whips and just spot after spot. In fact, Pillman used to call him a 'fast forward worker' because when you watched him on video tape, you ended up just fast forwarding to the next spot.
Shane was a worker that I had liked when he was in WWF and WCW but got lost in the shuffle and had the terrible Dynamic Dude gimmick. he was a respectable in-ring talent with good pscyhology. But his interviews prior to Barely Legal were way more than just swearing. In fact, he did very little swearing in those interviews. He had an uncanny knack to know when to swear to get your interest. His promos were sophisticated and edgy due to the context, not the swear words. I'd love to see somebody make a compilation video of Douglas' heel run agains the Pitbulls. All of the matches, promos and angles. It was a masterclass of getting heat

Although I mostly loved their matches, one of my pet peeves with Sabu, RVD, et al., was the way they sold self-inflicted injuries. You know, so the announcer could exclaim things like, “He’s so crazy he probably hurt himself as much as his opponent with that maneuver!”

I figured he retired a few years ago. TNA missed the boat by not creating a character named Genocide, putting him together with Homicide and Suicide, and having Sabu manage them or lead the faction.
Him and RVD had a fantastic match with Hyabusa and Jinsei Shinzaki at one of the 1998 ECW PPVs. I know that sounds like a total shitshow on paper but they mostly play it straight and it ends up being really good.
