The Ending Of Midsommar Explained

  • Ari Aster’s Midsommar is a shocking and disturbing horror film, just like Aster's debut film Hereditary, but the film deals with much different themes than its predecessor.
Midsommar is about Dani, her boyfriend Christian, and a group of Christian’s friends attending the festival of a bizarre cult in Sweden, but it’s also about the disintegration of a relationship. Dani and Christian clearly should have broken up years ago, only sticking together due to a tragedy in her life, and the ending deals with her finally moving on. Let’s take a look at the explanation of the ending of Midsommar.

BTWimagod i believe it had a lot to do with the trauma that was expressed throughout the rest of the movie. Like the whole jumping off the cliff thing, that was treacherous for Dani, and when Pelle tried explaining to her that he understands and everything made her extremely anxious. Of course there are other reasons to the trauma and horror she experiences, but the family’s suicide is crucial.
There’s even a theory where Pelle actually killed her parents to try and convince Dani to coming because he knew she would be the perfect May Queen. I would go into more detail but it’s a lot hahah
But yeah, I think that the family’s suicide is super important to the film as a whole. At least it wasn’t a jump scare like all shitty modern horror movies haha

I think she's the furthest thing from "sober" at that moment. She has experienced some devastating things very recently and she apparently needed therapy before the sister killed herself and her parents... then everything this cult- like village adds to it.... No where near emotional or logical balance. She's no where near sober, no where near thinking straight. I think she snaps, psychologically, in the end. There's little to know sanity left anymore... so why not "join in?"

    • @TheMovieWatcherClub

I fully agree with you... It's in my opinion that all of these things were manipulated in this direction. She can't have a life of her own. She can't leave... ever again. According to the precedent set in the movie... no one leaves except to go to a college in another country to make friends and manipulate them into visiting your home village for a "summer festival" ... I think she's better off with a crappy boyfriend at college than where she is now. But I think she snaps in the end... and there is little no sanity left.

@@manospapas5349 No, he wasn't into it. If he was, he wouldn't have bolted like he did afterwards, the woman wouldn't have been helping him get the girl pregnant. The fact is that Christian was drugged several times by the cult & the redhead girl cast a love spell on him, the girl told him that the drugs would lower his defenses. The same thing when Dani is drugged and Pelle knows this & plants a kiss on her when Christian is behind her. They knew what they were doing. They were trying to take everyone away from her so she would only have them. Pelle's sole purpose in the film was to bring Dani there, he kills her sister, her parents, writes the suicide note on her sister's computer, the big clue is that he leaves those flowers in her parents' bedroom, the same flowers Dani's wearing at the end.
The cult couldn't put it there, since they were in Sweden, Pelle did it because he was the only one that could've done it. He also gets rewarded for this at the end by the cult. Christian wasn't perfect by any means but he was drugged on purpose, the woman was even helping him, then when the drug wears off, he bolts, looking for Dani. They wanted Dani to see Christian because he was the last thing she had. Pelle intentionally tries to manipulate her, telling her happy birthday before Christian, not reminding him that it was the next day and her birthday. Real question is do you think if Christian wasn't drugged or under a love spell, would he willingly sleep with that redhead girl? If Dani wasn't drugged, would she let Pelle kiss her? Personally, I don't think either of them would've done that if they weren't under the influence of the drugs.

Ac_Fauzan Well I was certainly afraid and it was certainly an adrenaline rush. The level of tension and dread built up was insane. I was physically tense for the entire second half and was quite literally shaking afterwards. Horror is very subjective so I can’t say you’re wrong for not finding it all that scary or unsettling, but I’d say the majority of people who saw it were certainly scared and unsettled by it, so don’t presume that you’re in some majority. Not that the majority is overwhelming. Critics ranked the film quite highly while the audience was more of a 60-40 split. I am well aware slow burning, ambiguous horror with a heavy focus on real life drama over supernatural happenings is not for everyone, but I prefer it over pretty much all mainstream horror (The Conjuring, Insidious, etc etc) with its heavy reliance on loud jump scares and superficial demons (not that those movies aren’t good too). I find it mature, nuanced, and masterfully crafted and it sure is deeply unnerving to me.

The lack of explanation behind Connie’s death really bothers me. Shortly after Simon disappears, we hear a woman’s constant scream in the distance. We also get a glimpse of Connie’s corpse during the burning ritual at the end of the film. Some are saying she might’ve been drowned because of the wet hair and pale skin, others are saying she was drained of her blood, but there’s no definite answer from the film or Aster himself. I’m genuinely curious about what happened to her.

baby sufjan stevens Mark was presumably skinned, as one of the elders was wearing his face as a mask. Josh was fatally hit with a mallet after trying to take pictures of that sacred book, and when Christian was running away from the sex ceremony, we saw Josh’s foot sticking out of the ground like a plant. Simon wasn’t killed, but rather dissected into a blood eagle. Christian found his body in the shed during his attempted escape and you could see Simon’s lungs slowly inflating and deflating. He was alive. But we never got to see what happened to Connie. Only her corpse and a distant scream.

One thing that confused me, obviously these people have families, friends and professors that know they went to Sweden with this guy. So what happens a week or two later when they never come back home? Does the Swedish guy just keep going to other colleges, befriending people and tricking them into coming home and becoming sacrifices every few years?

    • @TheMovieWatcherClub
      @TheMovieWatcherClub 5 років тому +81

lol I noticed this too. So I do think this should have been answered in the movie. But the answer is almost sort of it in the movie. The reason they go to colleges to befriend and trick these people, is because college campuses today and the students on them are so careless and so lost, and so consumed with themselves, and popularity, and fitting in, they really have no life experience and therefor knowledge or common sense and don't fully understand what it is that they are getting them selves into. I traveled to Africa for 3 months when I was 24 and 10 different people knew the exact address I was going to, how long I would be there, a local number to contact, and I registered with the U.S. embassy there who checked in on me every Monday around noon... Our frontal lobes don't develop until we are about 25 years of age... yet we send children off to college to make their own decisions and prepare for the world when they barely have the intellectual capacity to understand the world. I also think it's important to note that Pelle looks like he is in his 30s and the americans look early 20s. I also do not think the festival happens every 90 years. I think that's a ploy that Pelle tells them because right after that he says "it's a once in a lifetime experience." I think it happens regularly, and they constantly attend college campuses because it's easy pickings ignorant young adults. I'm honestly a little impressed by the developed background of this.

    • @TheMovieWatcherClub
      @TheMovieWatcherClub 5 років тому +72

I actually don't think the festival happens every 90 years. I know Pelle says that. But I think that is part of the pitch... part of the sales tactic to convince them that it's a once in a lifetime experience.

I get the impression that if you thought the ending was a happy one, and felt Dani's actions were justified, then it says more about you than anything else. The group are barbaric murderers, and none of the actions of the 5 murdered outsiders warranted that outcome.
Christian and dani had a bad relationship, but that doesn't mean he deserved to die. He was painted in a not great light on purpose, but he wasnt evil, just lazy and selfish. "Cheating"on his partner while drugged and taken advantage of is not fair on him anymore than Pelle kissing Dani was her fault.
Dani was seen to be the innocent party but there are enough signals that she wasnt right for him and wasnt prepared to end it either. Still she had the favourable light to manipulate the audience.
I feel the movie slowly wanted to draw the audience in and have them question whether they were happy in that moment (the ending). To those pleased with Dani's decision to end the relationship (by killing him!), they are the people who are easily strayed from logical reason, who seek revenge and who in that situation, would have joined the cult too. I read a piece that Ari and an actor said as much to a screening of people so know there is something to this.
I have seen alot of reviews writing emotions of empowerment in the ending, and I find that speaks volumes about persons moral compass.
I preferred hereditary tbh, but I love reading peoples interpretations. The movie is a rorschach test, and I find how people view it much more interesting than what the film itself.

You know, Midsommar reminds me of a moment that could have occurred on the old sitcom, The Golden Girls. In this fictional moment, Rose, is telling the girls about another one of her stories from St. Olaf, but then Sofia mentions how Rose is always going on about some Swedish town named Helgafin or Lokiwyn that no one really cares about or wants to hear about. Rose, in her naivety, says something like, "Oh, there's no town called Lokiwym, but as for Helgafin, they lived three valleys over, but we St. Olafins never really went there." Blanch says, "Ok, I'll ask; why did your people never visit that town, Rose?" And Rose responds with, "Well, we don't really talk about it, but simply put... they weren't as... progressive as the people in my town. They still practiced the old ways, so I wouldn't encourage taking a vacation there. I just wouldn't." After a brief moment of awkward silence, Rose would probably say, "Ok, who wants some Cheese cake?" And then go into the kitchen leaving the other girls to wonder what the hell she meant before joining her for dessert.

@@sorrygtfo How long do you think Dani's sister was like that in the parents house? Her face looked like it had been there for several hours, I think Pelle did murder her family. He also killed Josh in the room when he was taking photos of the book & saw "Mark", the writer/director even confirmed it was Pelle that killed Josh. Pelle's extremely manipulative, he plants seeds in Dani to get her to doubt Christian, they drugged her and only then is when he kisses her, knowing that the drug lowers your defenses.
I don't think Dani would let Pelle kiss her if she wasn't under the influence of the drugs, just like I don't think Christian would've willingly got that redhead girl pregnant if he was under the influence of those drugs and he was drugged several times right before he's with the redhead girl. Pelle knew he could do that and get away with it, he's probably done this kinda thing before. Pelle killed her family, planted the flowers there in her parents' bedroom, the flowers were the same ones that Dani wears at the end during the ritual. The cult was in Sweden at the time, so they couldn't have planted them there, it had to be Pelle. That's why he gets rewarded at the end and he's so happy. He was a real POS, it's safe to say he tricked many people because they actually think he was good for Dani. He's the reason why she's even grieving her family to begin with, he takes Christian away from her, the only one that was there to comfort her when her family is gone, he does this to leave her fully vulnerable to him and the cult. If you've ever seen Hereditary, Ari Aster's done something similar in that with a seemingly trusting character that's being manipulative to one of the main characters.

The Horga (sp) leads Christian into his drugged infidelity (really he was not responsible in a sense) and the Horga also draws Dani in. If the Horga is representative of Dani's part of the relationship it is, in a sense, saying that Dani is the cause of the guy cheating and leaving, so she also destroys him with vengenance. The relationship dying thing doesn't make sense when you realize that all of the characters are being manipulated by the Horga. It draws Dani it, it destroys Christian and makes him into a human sacrifice... all of his friends are murdered as well as Simon and Conie (was that the British girls' name). If it is all emblematic of Dani' and Christian's relationship ending, then it means that Dani is just really passive aggressive and the cause of all the horror. But supposedly Aster wrote this right after a breakup, so maybe he was mad at his ex.
Even without the tragedy of Dani's life, she was already a psychological wreck.
well acted, good looking, but thematically a mess if it's really about a relationship ending and the emotions involved.

I think Christian was responsible. He was looking to break up with Dani for awhile and he kept flirting with that young woman from the village. Also, we learned that he was not the most ethical guy, nor was he a very good friend. The drugs just helped him participate in the ritual - but he still was lucid enough to be weirded out when one the the women "helped" him complete the ritual.

This was a masterpiece that was so realistic it was hard to watch. A deep look into the roots of a cult. I’ve spent time in Oslo in the summer and the endless days are surreal. Creating a film this disturbing that only takes place in bright daylight took incredible writing and acting. The artists couldn’t rely on the shadows to get the scares.
Sound design was spectacular as well.

    • @PapaPhilip

I agree that it's a good film to see how a cult can take the weaknesses of people and use them to manipulate them into their clutches. Describing it as a "breakup movie" as the director did, doesn't feel right to me. Looking at it as a study of how a cult absorbs a person is much closer to what happened. Your comment in just a few words makes more sense than most of what I've heard people say. The sound was really well done. I agree. I'm still not sure I'm glad I saw it, though :D.

@@connorbrooks4817 Well, let's start with the big one. The opening image is a prophetic laurel that lays out the entire plot of the film from beginning to end and since I anticipated this as I watched, I couldn't help but mull over every detail of the tapestry as it was on screen for approximately 7 to 10 seconds. That laurel idea reappears several other times in the film including the seduction of Christian through the pubic hair pie as well as the Bear burning, which is prodded at early on when Simon and Chloe (i think her name was) briefly encountered the bear. There's also a brief mentioning of what the children are doing as they play. Their game is called "Skin the fool" which of course we see is an actual thing, later on, being apart of the midsommar ritual. But there's more! We also have Pelle mentioning how his parents died in a fire early on, a reference to the fate of those at the end of the film who will also suffer the same fate. Pelle also reveals, although almost comedically that after the age of 72 all elders are killed. Of course, this is the foreshadowing of the elder suicides later on. I know there's more that I'm forgetting but all of this foreshadowing made me feel like a nail and the movie was the hammer slamming down on me over and over again.

I can't express with words how much I love this film. It's the most bizarrely enjoyable and therapeutic thing I've ever experienced.
Despite all of the blatantly disturbing imagery and death, it has an immensely nice, relaxing aura. I didn't finish the movie feeling unnerved; I finished it feeling refreshed and satisfied because of the fact that the movie ends with Dani starting anew. Her harmful relationship with Christian, as well as with his friends, is completely ceased. She is eagerly welcomed into her new metaphorical family, who accept and respect her wholeheartedly for the person she is.
The message of healing and moving on from broken relationships is presented in a very extreme way, with Dani's boyfriend and his friends literally ceasing to live. Dani's smile in the end of the movie as the yellow building burns signifies that she is finally at peace; she is now a part of a family that, unlike her old one, truly loves her. The end of the movie is only the beginning for Dani.

It's not that he deserved it, it's that the symbolism is cathartic for some people. I agree that he was assaulted (Dani doesn't know this of course), but it's how he'd been treating Dani for a year and a half that made him callous. He definitely didn't actually deserve it, it's just that the symbolism makes people horrified and relieved at the same time because she's finally free of the relationship (though now she's a prisoner of a different kind of relationship)
