  • After many deliberations I have decided on Sprat & Winkle couplings to standardize my varied collection of (mainly old) goods wagons.

    Beautiful and fantastic simple Invention of coupling. As an enthusiast of DIY train models myself your video on the couplings is an eye opener. I will definitely try to adopt your technique. Thanks for sharing such a valuable and descriptive video.

    Wow, a brilliant demonstration of how to prepare and fit Sprat & Winkle couplings. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to put your knowledge and craft onto You Tube.

    Haven't seen that many videos talking you through this coupling system as well as the assembling stages. I too have these couplings fitted to my wagons and I find them quite handy when performing my layouts operations. Good job. Gained another subscriber.

    This layout is simply fantastic !

    Thank you for explaining in a easy to understand manor talking us through the stages....I'm about to embark on a shunting puzzle/diorama build & am considering this type of coupling for the layout....

    These look beautiful, a lot better than those nasty plastic lumps.

      @@davidhyde4329 are there any more ways I can make this? I don't have the brass ones on my hands.

    Nice build video for these couplings. I've got some of these on a few trucks, but never really completed the conversion. Maybe it's time I did!

      Hi Scott, thanks for the comment. I have built a jig (see my last update video). Things need to be more carefully aligned to get consistent operation. I will do another video shortly about my goods yard operation, will cover the S&W couplings again. I was, at one time, considering abandoning them, but now I am pleased I didn't. Look out for the next video. - David.

    Thanks for the information and "how to". I just cant get the hang of soldering yet but when I do get it ,I think I may try this coupling.Barry. Devon. (about to subscribe)

      Hi Barry, thanks for your kind comments. I nearly gave up on the S&W couplings, They did not always stay coupled. After reading the BRM article on them (2014) I made a jig. Please see my update #5 for details. They now work great - and - I am not going to solder them any more. I am so pleased with the way they now work I will do a Part 3 for the S&W couplings - I am glad now I did not change. - David

    Not bad, I have been torn between these and dinghams. It's a shame the magnet idea doesn't work though as that would be more simple but no real way of keeping stock uncoupled

      +Michael Henfrey Hi Michael, thanks for your comment. I did also have problems with buffers locking when the trucks were pushed, depends on how tight the curves are I guess. I use Peco medium radius. I have come across a variation to the S&W couplings in a back copy of BRM magazine which I will try out. On balance I am tempted to stay with S&W couplings.

    Great demo video, well done! Have tried these, but got distracted with automation (!), but I have a question - how well do these cope with changes in gradient or curves? Thanks!

    What is the chemical you used to blacken the couplings?

    • @davidhyde4329
      @davidhyde4329  8 років тому

      Hi Asa, Its a metal finish product by Birchwood Casey called 'BRASS BLACK' - designed to blacken Brass, copper or bronze. Got mine from ebay. Any problems come back to me. Its a touch expensive but used sparingly will last a long time, and it looks great. - David
