TOP SPEED TEST 2021 KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S // German AUTOBAHN // High Speed Wobble?

- Time to take the 2021 1290 Super Adventure S to its top speed and see how stable it runs. High speed wobble / high speed instability was an issue with all the predecessors starting with the 1190 Adventure and including the 1290 Super Adventure S (2017-2020).
I had the brand new 2021 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S for a day and I had to try for myself if the high speed wobble had been fixed or not. If you have not seen my review of the 2018 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S - please check it out below. The high speed instability was one of my major issues with the predecessor.

Thank you for doing this! I had a 2019 SAS and that was one of my biggest complaints. Glad to see KTM resolved this.
High Speed Super Adventure Owners:
Check steering head bearing
Ensure correct suspension settings
Get wheel balance
Use quality road bias tires
Change to thicker steering damper oil
Ensure everything bolted to bars is even
My dampener has been replaced on warranty, made it much more stable.
As a Canadian I have to ask, are there a lot of hard shelled bugs on the Autobahn?
Depending on the season, time of day and temperatures: yes! We had cold spring so it is moderate right now but there are times where your visor gets plastered. Nothing too big to be concerned about safety if that is why your are asking
If your suspension is set too hard it can also cause the bike to wobble....had that issue on a brand new suzuki gsr750......bike would wobble at around 190km/h......I made the suspension softer and issue was fixed.......depends on your weight as well on some bikes....i also had a wobble on the yamaha tracer 900.....im a heavy guy and the bike wobbled over 200km/h.......the lighter guys who took the test bike for a ride never had an issue......check the suspension settings mate
Good point. Sports setting was good here. I did play with settings on my 2018 from soft to firm. Firmer was a little better usually. For me clothing had a major influence- tight fitting leather es better than loose textile gear
I just came back from 3k one week trip in the Alps. I own a SA 1290 from 2019. This is by far the best bike for the Alps. And returning to Germany via Autobahn, I went 240 and it did not wobble at all. Maybe due to my shield from MRA.
I have had times where I could go fast too. I found that clothing made a big difference along with how windy it was. However, there were days were going faster than 200-220 kph
I've MRA screen on my 2022 sas still small amount of wobble anyway
I had the 2017 SAS and never had a problem with high speed wobble. The front did get a bit light with full luggage @ 240km/h but was planted when I dropped to 230.
That would have been the one for me 🤘
me too
When I did a short test on a KTM Super Adventure 1290 S, on a German B road, I wound it up to about 190 with no trouble at all.
I just got the thousand-kilometer (600 miles for US-market bikes) done on the one I bought.
When it was naked I got it up to about 230 km/h (143 mph) with nothing remarkable going on, but there was too much traffic on the Autobahn to hold it for top speed, and I don't want to collect big points on my license for going real fast on a B road limited to 100 km/h (62 mph).
Then I fitted some Ortlieb flexible panniers, mounting them in real tight to the rear sub--frame by removing those large, rather odd, horn-shaped passenger grab handles. The panniers are quite small compared the the standard KTM boxy panniers, and mounted much closer-in, so that they are both smaller and not so very wide, but they still present quite square faces to the slipstream.
So the other day I had a few clear stretches on the A27 where I could gas it up, expecting to just vault up to the promised 250 km/h (155 mph). (That is what is in the official German Fahrzeugschein, but 250 probably is what you will see on the speedometer; the real speed will be at least 7 or 8 km/h less, according to the GPS.)
Aside from now having the panniers fitted, I was wearing standard touring clothing, a cloth jacket and pants, which does go kind of baggy at high speed. Too, I had the standard KTM windscreen set to its highest position, because I am about six feet (1.83 meters) tall. The wind was calm and the air temperature was about 10 degrees C (50 degrees F).
There was a noticeable difference as I passed about 220, as the bike became increasing, slightly twitchy but with no noticeable tendency to develop a wobble. Too, it was a bit slow to reach 230-235 in 6th gear with the throttle held open.
At that point I had to slow down for traffic, when closing the throttle caused the bike to slow down rather rapidly, about like doing medium braking. It might have made it all the way to 250 given enough time, but that might have been a little bit scary, hanging onto the wide bars of a bike that was sort of jumping around a bit.
I think those panniers make for a lot of air resistance, drag, at high speed. (Drag increases as the square of the speed, of course.) The suit was no help either, sort of ballooning out a bit past about 200, thus adding some more drag that way.
Putting all that drag from those panniers back there rather far from the steering head must do nothing good for the high-speed stability. Unfortunately, I have fixed the panniers to the sub-frame with some screws and washers, making them difficult to just remove as normal (really meaning making them "a bit more difficult to steal"), so that I don't think I will bother taking them off and repeating this exercise wearing my tight-fitting leather suit, with the windshield set low. At a guess, this bike should hit 250 in that configuration without too much trouble, but going down the Autobahn at the speed of heat is not quite what it is designed for.
Thank you for sharing your experience with the top end speed of the bike 😉 ride safe 🤙
I have a 2017 SAS and I did have some wobbles at first when the bike was new but I immediately tightened the steering stem a bit and not a wobble since not even at top speed after 20000 km. One more thing to consider is to have the suspension setting to sport when doing high speeds
Thank you very much for your feedback 😉
Little off-topic, but how does the Badlands Pro acts at those Autobahn speeds? Been thinking about getting myself a set lately, never seen one in person, nor put one on, but rumors say it's a quite "baggy" fit.
Got no clue what baggy would look like when it comes to motorcycle gear tbo and if it's a problem at all, when it comes to those speeds.
I like that "baggy" fit of the KLIM Adventure line-up (mine is an older Latidute model - before KLIM made this part of the touring line-up) for most riding situations. For high speed riding baggy clothing is not a good thing as it will cause a good amount of turbulancej - tight fitting leathers would be better here. With that said - you can take your adventure bike to considerable speeds even with baggy textiles ;-)
Rode ducati multistradas for last 8 years. This is the only bike I've ridden that could pull me away. Had it 5 wks now and GOD I love it. Scotland next Saturday can't wait.
Sounds 👍 enjoy Scotland 😎
Congratulations on your video test, thumbs up. I have the same bike but in Italy I cannot carry out these tests on the roads and highways. The goal of the test is the high speed stability test. However, if you want to experience actual top speed I suggest doing it in tight-fitting sportswear, with no cameras on the handlebars, and getting your head closer to the tank to bring weight to the front and reduce turbulence. In these conditions I expect an indicated speed greater than 250 km / h, towards 260 km / h. Compared to the previous model, in 2021 the carburetion is leaner for reasons of emissions and this slightly affects the performance of the engine at the top, but the power is there and the delivery curve is similar. Then in the end the tests are excellent, but (I think) the 5 km/h difference with the previous model is not a drama.
Thank you very much 👍 I am sure the bike will hit 250 km/h easily as you said with sportier riding gear and less head wind. Most important is the improved stability - I would not ride it at 250 km/h for very long but 220-230 km/h is something I would do for extended periods of time if traffic allows. Not so much for speed rush but I find it better to move passed all other traffic rather than move along with it - just safer that way 😉
You're always welcome to try it here in Germany with us as long as the Autobahn still has unrestricted areas. Who knows what the new German government will decide in the next few years...
@@chilly243 I know. Come sooner than later - discussions are ongoing to restrict max speed to 130 km/h 😬
@@MotoVibes absolutely awful discussion, because in my opinion it will not bring the added security or environmental benefits that some claim it will bring. I mean I dont regularly drive 200+ on the Autobahn - more like 160-180 - but even reducing to 140 makes me feel physically uncomfortable because I have to check around my bike or car much more. On a 500km trip I sincerely drive more relaxed at higher speeds than 120-140. Thats going to be absolute horror in a couple of years...
@@MotoVibes and you can bet your ass that they will put up speed traps every couple of kilometers all way down the Autobahn and if you go 140 instead of 130 you will be a criminal "Raser" when they also increase the penalties
Just watched your video, wow that thing really flies with you on it, great riding skills, keep the videos coming awesome 👍
Thank you very much , will do! 😉
I wanted to be composed, serious, and mature, but... WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE FLY LIKE THE WIIIIIIIIIND!!!! What a stunning bike! :P
Thank you 😉
I still have my 2015 1190 Adv. and just did about 230 km/h on the highway this weekend. It is always absolutely stable. When I bought it I asked my retailer about this topic. He mentioned that tire balance have to be perfect, inner spoke and pressure sensor, and spikes balanced. 2.5 bar front and 3.0 bar back. It is a standard check list apparently.
There was an issue with the cases I think, but I have an Enduristan bag for travel. Also, no wobbling issues. I am pretty sure that same applies for the 1290. Ah, set suspension to road or race for high speed for a stiffer ride.
It’s good that you do not experience this issue. A friend of mine also has the 1190 R and no issues. Not everyone sees the high speed wobble but many do. Like you said many factors come into play here. Luggage is a big one of those
You got it, another one great video ktm 1290 super adventure! Im a proud owner 1290 super adventure s -2020. I'd like you compare the two generation models in another video. Congratulations mate, good job!
Thank you Jose. That video will be coming up soon 😉
Looking forward to that comparison!
Hello Jose,
It’s actually a complete different Bike, so much better, hard to imagine since I was (and still am) pleased with the “older” model 💪🏻💪🏾👍🏻👍🏾
Should You upgrade? If you can? Definitely YES 🙏🏻🙏🏾

@@MotoVibes I'll waiting it. Thanks a lot!
@@hedonzx822 thank a lot mate for your answer,...but older model (I'm in love whit😂😂😂) has only already 5 months. its too early to change it 👍👍👍
Great video Oliver, didn;t get that speed with mine yet :) Just be careful, never know who is watching Ride safe my friend
Thank you Guy. It was all legal. Plenty of Autobahn left with no speed limit 😉
Holy smokes! Thank you so much for the awesome video. Wow! Be well.
Thank you very much Jeffrey - Glad you enjoyed it ;-)
Great video as always! Looking forward for a review of the 2021 1290 SAS vs the previous model. You are probably the best to make this review considering your experience with the previous model as well as the 50k km you did.
Thank you Dan - the 2021 S model review is coming soon and it will focus a lot on the difference between the predecessor and the current model ;-)
@@MotoVibes awesome, thank you ☺️
Very interesting to see this Oliver, not yet had mine upto those speeds yet..unfortunately we dont have the luxury of unlimited motorways in the UK very heavily camerad on most these days, but just short of 154 mph, pretty impressive for a big trail bike.
Good to know it's stable at speed though. Great work. 👍
Thank you Steve - I guess for the vast majority the top speed has littel relavance in real life - except for the bragging rights in the bar - and that is where we need to keep orange at the top ;-)
last week with mine 253 kmh driven and between 230 and 240 there is also such a woble in my steering wheel, over the 240 its gone, but the new one is idd more stable than the older version ... what did you think of the new apex suspension ???
It’s works well - so well indeed that you take it for granted and don’t give it any extra thought (which is good) - with that said I did (and could not) push it to see its limits.
Enjoying your content, you are making me consider the KTM super adventure s instead of the BMW S1000XR...
Will you be doing a full review of the 2021 super adventure s? If so can you please compare its on road agility with the xr. Thank you!
Thank you very much - that's the plan! As a matter of fact the video is already edited and will be online soon. However, I am comparing more ot the predecessor than the XR. I did do a video on the impressoin of the XR against the KTM Super Adventure S which you may have seen already ua-cam.com/video/NPsiv_qMUm4/v-deo.html
The smaller wheels will make the XR "more agile" for road riding - it will "turn a bit easier" in direct comparision. However, once I was riding each bike for half a day none of that really mattered to me. What did matter was the engine characteristic - on that end I absolutely preferred the KTM V-Twin over the BMW inline 4-cylinder - that is very much personal preference and this may be completly the oppositve for you - especially if you are coming from a sports bike you may like higher revs better - I don't - I like low end torque - lots of it 😉
I just got a test drive in KTM. I liked it a lot, more than Ducati multistrada V4. I'd try the XR too but it's not possible...
So at the moment i think that LC8 is a better choice for touring/fun bike
@@thefake89 I would like to try the Mulit V4 too one day - just to see how it rides ;-)
Thanks, that's nice to know. It looks as if we could expect 250 or so under better conditions. Good to hear stability is improved over the previous model - it's one of the things that put me off it. My 950 will do an indicated 215 and is stable at that speed.
Glad it was helpful - it was not that I could not reach higher speeds with the precedessor - it was just not very consistent and so dependent on wind etc. The latest itereation of the 1290 SAS seems a lot more robust in that respect as both days I was ridding it were very windy with lots of gusts.
Thank you for your high speed test, just one question, did you compare your speedometer with a GPS speed info.?, because my bike (2018 1290 S.A.R.) has 7 % of speed error (speedometer indication higher than actual/GPS speed)
No I did not check against a GPS but they typically show between 5-8% more than actual speed. My 2020 SAR showed 10% (!) more speed - I had that fixed by KTM though - now it is spot on ;-)
@@MotoVibes ...great!...did they change the front ABS ring?
@@rodrigofabregas7756 no - I asked them to program a smaller wheel set 17/19 instead 18/21. that fixed it with the larger wheels. If I am using the 17/19 I have am ABS in addition which then gives me almost 100% accurate readings
I have a 2021 Super Adventure S. At 70 to 80 kph there is terrible wobble (when you have luggage and top case) I found. Goes away when going a bit faster for some reason but needs a better damper or something with topcase. Dont get it at all on BMW GS - but the GS is not as much fun to ride !
Hi, that is typical for most motorbikes. Easyyto heal with aftermarket damper. The one KTM supplies as stock is garbage.
Top Case is the problem in 95% of the cases. I had no problems without case
I guess @OnTwo Wheels & @jefta88 had you covered ;-)
Interesting video. I have a 2019 1290SAS, but in my country high speed wobbling isn't really a topic, given that you'd lose your license before halfway to an assumed critical point. However, I've heard from two KTM shops that the wobble, at least partially, could be attributed to a front bearing that, over time, did not have ample Nm and needed re-tightening.
Or such was the claim. Since I've had a bit of wobble on the opposite side of the speedometer, e.g. lower speed, something I've been told is "not unusual) my bike is scheduled for a check. Rim and tire could perhaps play a part as well? On a last note, the OEM wind screen doesn't funnel air very well and might actually increase vortices as speed increases. Latter is just a theory.
When one day one can travel again I might try to find out about stability, although with pannier's the speed exercise will sensibly end sooner.
On a last note, for what it's worth, coming from BMWs I was a bit of a skeptic towards the 1290. Now 10.000km later a future upgrade to the new model is more likely than a switch back to BMW GSA. Wobble or no wobble :)
thank you very much! This latest iteration of the 1290 SAS will likely attract even more BMW GS riders I would assume. Not that the BMW GS is not a great bike but the KTM offering does offer quite a few things the BMW does not.
muchas gracias
This 2021 was with the stock screen. On my 2020 SAR I used the tall Givi and the small Puig racing screen - I experienced the wobble at high speeds with both screens.
@@MotoVibes hank you very much for your quick response. I'm thinking of buying this year's SAR and I'm worried about the shimmy and aerodynamic protection, I'm tall and I don't like to go slowly. Thanks for everything. Greetings from Spain
@@jonparker8927 I bought the 2022 SAR last October but I have K60 Scouts mounted which are rated to max 190 km/h so I have not taken the R to top speed. The larger wheels should help stability at top speed but the taller suspension will not. But then again - how often do really go 200+ km/h. Lately my tire choices limit the top speed. Mitas E-07 are also rated to 190 km/h. The Karoo 4 was limited to 160 km/h which was the last tire on the 2020 SAR

@@MotoVibes ktm is rocket
Really good to know - if I am ever on an autobahn without luggage (last time was on my 2018 1290 SAR with hard luggage and I had visions of the cases falling off - so never went beyond 200kph in bursts). That said always seemed stable with or without luggage. Test rode the 2021 1290 SAS three weeks ago and really liked it - much easier to ride on narrower roads and more confidence inspiring - so ordered one. Wanted a predominantly black one so still waiting - but assured it won’t be long. I don’t consider myself slow but won’t be maxing it out in the UK as prison is not appealing - but really looking forward to getting it! So a full review would be interesting (as long as you are kind 😊)
Full review coming up. Won’t all be nice 😂
Good video as usual, mate!
I’m riding SA 1290 (2016 - the white one) and there is no wobbling until 205 km/h (without panniers) and 180 km/h with factory panniers at all. I didn’t go faster.
What is important when riding in such a speed is the tires and their pressure which has to be on KTM values.
I can imagine that even the GoPro can make a difference because in 200+ there is a massive air pressure on each and every part of the bike and if you have it on handlebars… It is visible how it’s shaking.
And now back to what I mentioned at the beginning - I didn’t go faster - because this is not the speed you should go with travel enduro on a daily basis…
1. It is very dangerous 2. You can’t stay focused for to long if you are not “46” or Mark 😉 3. If you want to go that fast, go for super sport and Nurburgring, Most or Brno circle 👍🏻
I have seen a lot of videos and articles where people did discuss this a lot but IMHO this is absolutely irrelevant… Honestly, how often do you go that fast?
Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy the speed as well but sometimes people deal with shit just to have something to deal with 👍🏻😉
Looking forward for next videos!
Cheers
Well, thing is I am 46 😂😂 . I take the Autobahn only if I have to on motorcycle . However, I am comfortable going 220-230 for longer distances even on a motorcycle if the bike and traffic allows it (usually less than shown in this video)- I don’t push it much past that.
@@MotoVibes Well, then my comment is not valid anymore 😉 Ride safe!
I think one-sided gopro makes a significant wobble effect on the handle bars. I wonder if you had tried it without gopro ?
@@hifzullahozkaya the GoPro has minor influence - I have tried it without
My 2016 has a lot of wobble at 130mph and higher. Thanks for posting, that’s one of my biggest concerns with the new model - high speed stability.
I am happy to see this one fixed too - it is not the most important issue but such a powerful beast should go as fast as advertised ;-)
i'm also courius about that 🤞🏼
You might want to try this again, but without that camera mount on the left hand side of the handlebar. Having that thing out in the 240 kmh+ slipstream, tugging on one side of the bar, can't help but influence the bike's high-speed stability.
Yeah. These things do make a difference but not that much. The head winds had a much larger influence on turbulence and the max speed. I don’t usually go THAT fast - this was just to see how the bike behaves and if KTM improved on the top speed stability. I have a 2022 1290 SAR now but the 50/50 tires I am running cap the top speed at 160-190 km/h depending on the type of tire 😉
So many factors will come into play with the wobble! Steering damper, tire pressure, tires sizes, wheel sizes, windshield position, the clothe you are wearing! What matters is that you showed us what the bike could do safely! Good job Oliver, see you at the next KTM Rallye! Cheers
Would love to do the KTM Rallye - do you know if the 2021 KTM Adventure Rallye Europe is happening? Wasn't it supposed to happen this months?
@@MotoVibes You just missed it! It started on the 4th in Greece!
@@patrickcooper9641 next year 🤙😎
true
Great video man. Appreciate the balls of steel you had to push the bike to it's limits in those wind conditions.
But with a full aftermarket Rottweiler kit and a ICU flash, do you think the bike can ever reach 260+?
Without the upcoming wind, of course.
Keep on making these great videos for us 👌🏻
Oh - that is a tough one for me to answer as I have no experience with the Rottweiler kit. I know you end up with a bit more power and torque but the stock engines are tuned so well that it’s hard to squeeze a lot of extra out of them. The top speed gain is probably not the main objective of installing a Rottweiler kit.
No wind or some tail wind would likely show better improvements on the top speed readings as wind resistance is massive on these tall adventure bikes at high speeds 😉
Big fat American here. I'm 6'3" over 300lbs. I have my 2018 s model equipped with a tall windshield, touratech crash bar and aluminum saddle bags. 125mph is about all I can get on an open stretch. So far as the wobble... YES. Starts at about 95mph. But I have to say that my aluminum stock front wheel is slightly bent from hard offroading. So that's probably why lol. I have an Alpina front wheel in a box that I haven't installed yet.
Speaking of America- I just arrived in the US 18 hours into the trip and we still have 3 more to go 😂 I guess I would not be riding in excess of 100 mph a lot in the US but the Alpina rims sound like a gear addition to the bike 😎👍
Great little run, I love how the gopro on the mirror arm us hanging on for dear life.... oh how I miss the ride down to the schwarzwald..... and the auto bahn ride...
Well, just come back and visit 😎 where do you live ?
I will certainly visit again when all the fuss about covid is over... next year will be busy with my fellow Brits and I heading for the Alpine roads... and mountain passes...

@@36moto So, at least you are not too far away then. Getting to the West Alps is a 1250 km straight ride (which I don't do) for me too ;-)
WOW, that was fast, like one of my favorite Queen's old song..."Ride The Wild Wind"......ride and stay safe my friend !!!
I don't normally ride at top speed - I will do 220-230 kph for extended periods on longer Autobahn rides if possible but such high speeds will cause faster fatigue ;-)

I’ve the 2017 1290S and it doesn’t wobbles as much as your predecessor did at that speed. I took it slightly above 200 and it was stable. My previous Honda crosstourer was far worse. Specially with the Givi trekker top and/or side cases. Nevertheless, great video
Thank you Ricardo! On good days I could go 230 kph (speedometer reading) on the 2018 SAS - the new 1290 SAS was a lot more stable overall. My current R model ist a lot worse - especially with the small wheels (17/19) - the bike get unstable at 180 kph
@@MotoVibes well, it’s still fun to ride and if we really think about it, how many times do we really have to take this type of bike to these speeds
@@chocksout Not that often. However, if traffic allows I will go 220-230 kph for extended periods of time. Last time I had knobby tires, luggage and the short wind shield- 180 kph was Max speed and still got me where I wanted to go 😉
@@MotoVibes I normally just do “short bursts”. Just to take the rust out. 😁
Really Excellent video, I have a 2020 SAS with no wobbling until 4500 kms because I needed to change the brake discs -> manufacturing issue. After this change I have shimmy effect between 65 km/h to 75 km/h with my hands of the handlebar. My Wheels are SCORPION TRAIL II that has been balanced already. I ride always with a SW MOTECH top case. Any suggestion ? Thank you.
Thank you very much. You can try taking the top case off to see if that changes things. The 1290 SA seems to be senstive to shimmy effects - more so for me with the R model (that I have owned now for 1 year) than the S - the R model has even longer suspension travel which contributes to the shimmy effect. Even on the S model luggage in general (weight and aerodynamics), loose fitting riding gear and a taller wind screen all affect the bikes stability - typically at higher spees though than 65-75 km/h. I have noticed differences with different tires at 65-75 km/h - the Scorpion Trails 2 were fine but my Mitas E-07+ showed shimmy effects at 55-65 km/h - I had the wheel re-balanced with no change. Now I have the same Mitas E-07+ on the bike at the shimmy effect is gone at 55-65 km/h but shows up around 120 km/h. With the S model I tried changing different modes on the suspension - from soft to hard - with little change. However, try increading the pre-load (increasing it) - it should put a little more weight on the front wheel and that may help a little bit.
Another place to look is the steering head - sometimes tighting up the steering head can help if it has come loose. Last resort is putting a new (better) steering damper in (replacing the stock steering damper) - I have not yet gone that route but I am considering it with the R model now. Hope that helps ;-)

Great, might get a bit more without headwinds. Oliver, I was thinking about the time your tyres disintegrate on the Autobahn will always be there in the back of ones mind.
I had this in back of my mind too. These tires had a few hundred km on them so I felt OK. BUT crazy how hot they get after a short fast ride
How do you find the wind protection in terms of helmet buffeting/wind noise? Thanks!
It’s good for a stock screen- not as good as my aftermarket Givi touring screen on the predecessor. More details in the upcoming review of the bike this Friday 😉
Is it possible the “high speed wobble” is due to the gopro ring mounted off center and affecting your handlebar balance? Have you tried this same test with nothing mounted on the handlebar?
Yes I have. The GoPro is not the main issue - the effects are minor in my experience 😉
how did you cope with the engine heat at SAS. did you do something about it? I find it almost unbearable.
Honestly, I did not pay a lot of attention to it. Once you are moving it is not really an issue (even on the old bike) but I cannot say if the 2021 model is better than the 2020 in this regard.
Nice review. Do the older 1290 wobble ? I have a 2013 ktm 1190 I bought from new .I've. Never felt the bike wobble .After 255 it slowly builds speed 262 were I've backed off. Obviously not Allowed in Sa to go over 120 so this all in my dreams 😂
I understand- just theoretically speaking 😂 not all 1190 or -1290 Adventure or super adventures wobble at higher speeds but there is quite a bit of shatter in the forums about it and something I have experienced with my 2018 1290 SAS and now with my 2020 1290 SAR.
What size rim and tire size
Standard wheels and stock tires. 17/19“ and Mitas road tires
Got to the same conclusion, 240? No wobbling what so ever 🧐👌the predecessor? indeed the front wobbled at around 200 km/u.
Nice presentation 👍🏻👍🏾
Thank you very much 😎👍
Any comment on how the SAR compares to the SAS? Now you have had both to compare. Cheers
Would be worth a video some day wouldn't it 😉 so far I like the SAR for the better suspension off-road - with that said I have only done very little off-road / dirt road riding and I still have to play around with settings and such. The extra suspension travel does have its downsides too - at the moment I have a smaller wheel set installed (my "old" spoked wheels off-road set with knobby tires) and high speed stability is much worse on the R than on the S which does not come at a surprise as the suspension travel is 20mm more than on the S. The small wheelset with be my "road set" but I guess I will not be able to go very fast anymore. Funny thing is - the large 18/21 wheels add stability at high speeds - so if top end speed is what you are after ( I am not) the larger wheels would be better for that
@@MotoVibes any issues with the 19/17 combination when running on the SAR? After all, the different diameters may affect speedo reading, ABS, traction control etc. Does the wheelset fit without issues, or are there any other differences in the forks besides Travel. Like different spacers needed or whatever.
In my case I would be looking for a more or less universal wheel set, as I do not intend to change them back and forth. So also looking for an universal tire.
@@TR850 it works but the speedo needs adjustment - I am using a different ABS ring to account for smaller wheels. If I did not already have the rims I would think really hard about getting a 2. set of wheels. It quite an expensive things to do especially when you add 2. set of rotors too
thanks for sharing this experience
Thanks for watching 😉
Feels like when high speed your front really not stable, is it? How's your feeling??
The bike is jerking around because of the turbulence. The bike is staying steady though and it feels quite save (which I cannot say from my older 1290 models)
was that your lose unstrapped helmet strap flapping in the wind hitting 240kph???
Yes, but just the end piece of the strap - it is a D-ring lock - so the helmet was secure ;-)
@@MotoVibes phew! good to hear....love your channel, ride safe!
@@monzadh thank you very much ;-)
Any idea how does this compare with the R model ?
No - not really yet. I have the 2022 R now but I have tires that are limited to 190 kph so I cannot test max speed wobble test with the R yet. The higher suspension will be a disadvantage to the S but the larger wheel diamter will stablize better at high speeds. My guess is that it will behave similar to the S
What helmet are you using?
Please check the description 😉
Amazing video bro ! I love it sooooooo so so so much ,thank you so so so much for it 👌😲😃😍😍😍🥰🤗❤❤❤
Glad you like 🤙 stay awesome 😎
Yap i had old and new and they improved a lot high speed stability for sure
Interesting that this bike did less than 250Kmh max speed. As far as I remember I saw 274 on the speedo of my 2017 SAS. As for the highspeed woble/weaving I think it only happens under hard acceleration combined with turbolence from cars on high speed German autobans. Arround 190 seems to be the worst part, than the bike becomes more stable. One of the times pushed past 270 was on empty highway and very calm morning weather from Munich towards Matighofen :). The bike was quite stable. I guess thistis where they test them.
I think R1200GS feels more stable at high speed, but it does not have the power of the 1290, hence you can't really accelerate so aggressively from 180 and upset the suspension. Bit of apple to lemon comparrison.
I have just ordered set of spoke wheels. Do you mind helping me with some questions on email or any of the messenger platforms?
Man I get wobble at like 120 😂
I do weigh over 100kg and have a great big 58L topbox on the back
I am sure you will see 250+ kph with no wind on this bike - it was quite windy that day. The largest factor I experienced with my S was the clothing - things got better when I started wearing the airbag - I guess it keeps things a bit more snugg.
Now that I have the R model I noticed a difference in wheels size too - larger wheels (18/21 of the R) are a lot more stable at high speeds - kinda makes sense when you think about it too. I currently have the smaller 17/19 installed and I cannot get stable above 180 kph.
Please go ahead and email or message me with questions ;-)
@@awrebyawe Mine was happening under deceleration from 70 to 50Kmh without touching the bars. Slight touch to the bars was eliminating the issue. Seems yours is much more severe.
@@MotoVibes Hmm, I never thought about the vest helping. I also changed the jacket and the pants together with the vest, so I can't really say. I got Stadler SUPERVENT III jacket and Pants ACE II PRO which are on the snug side, so they might be helping. Anyhow, for me the comfort speed (noise, stress, range) is till 180, even 160 these days. I get to ride on highway only to reach far destinations on multi day trips, and in such cases I ride with panniers, hence 200+ is a bit too much:).
I have emailed you with the question about the wheels:)
@@OTWW you should have your answer in the mailbox ;-) Last time I had to keep it to 180-190 max too because of the knobby tires and the small windshield - and for the looks of it my current R model will not go much faster than that either (with the same tires)
240kmh... Mehr braucht man nicht zum reisen 😅🤣.... Super, gutes Video 👍
so isses 😅 vielen Dank!
Tank slapper???
Just came back from a trip on the Autobahn when I saw 247 with a cloth suit and panniers. I think the bike should hit 250 indicated, what is on the Fahrzeugschein as its Vmax, if I were wearing leathers, with no panniers fitted.
Because of the panniers, I guess, the bike was a bit lively at high speed, but not to a worrisome degree.
So there you are, only doing about 238 in reality on a tall bike with wide bars. It is time to buy a Hayabusa if you can't live with the disappointment.
My biggest gripe was stability at higher speeds - that has improved for me. Also, these days I am riding 50/50 offroad tires on my R version - the tires max speed rating is usually the limiting factor for top speed between 160-190 km/h depending on the type of tire. When I had the S model I would go higher speeds on the Autobahn depending on traffic.
My 1290 is speed limited to 200kmh!!! How do I fix this. Does anyone know..
So yes I actually read the description, and it answered my questions. Your 240 is my 150 mph wow that’s fast, too fast for me. “My GoPro is hanging on for dear life”...totally cracked me up. 👍🏼 😎 🇺🇸 🌎
Germans and their Autobahn. The last bit of "freedom" for us 😂 Most people that drive on the Autobahn keep it somewhere between 160-200 kph when there is not limit. Anything much faster will require a lot more concentration and focus.
Thanks for video just got my new one just had first service , need an exhaust though Leo Vince are not going to produce an after market can shame I'll keep looking.
Regards
Chris
It will likely take a while like on the predecessor for all manufacturers to come up with products
Hallo.
What suspension setting did you use?
I was in sport mode
@@MotoVibes Danke fürs antwort, allzeit gute Fahrt
Excellent test to show the improvements, it seems that the frame harmonic flexing of before has been reduced greatly. No what we see is probably what could be eliminated with some more stiffening of the trellis. Then the small oscillating amplitudes will disappear. Hopefully they will do that ASAP. Nevertheless, I value your risk taking a lot. Thanks.
Thank you very much - glad it is helpful. I certainly would not go max speed for an extended period of time but I would ride up to 220 km/h continously if they bike and traffic would allow it. My current 1290 SAR with luggage (and tire choice) ends at 180-190 km/h.
@@MotoVibes I also saw people reporting that Michelin 5 do not show wobble. So maybe it is tire induced. Will be interesting to find out. Cheers !!!
Lowering the forks was helping a lot with high speed stability, believe it or not. Maybe try to lower your front forks 10-15mm?
maybe on the new bike ;-)
Does it not have a steering damper?
Yes, the bike come with a steering damper.
Well - you can go really fast with it but it's not the most important thing 😎
My 2020 1290 SAR has a high speed wobble at 135 bigger stearing damper fixed that wobble
My 2020 R model shows high speed instability a lot earlier too - especially since I have mounted the smaller wheels with 17/19 - the larger 18/21 seem to do better at higher speeds. I may have to look into upgrading the steering damper to see if this helps. The R does have more suspension travel so I am not surprised to see this effect
Any wobble at high speed? I think light wobble on video 200kmph
Yes there is BUT it is the wind pulling on the bike but the bike is keeping very stable. The difference of high speed wobble caused by the bike is that the handle bars start to moved quickly from left to rigtht and back - so the motorcycle is not self stabilizing at 200+ kph which gets a bit scary. In my 2 days of riding the bike always kept stable.
@@MotoVibes thank u sir for ur reply just I want know about highspeed stability and wobble
Thank u ...
Mates one done the same - wheels not balanced - after balance no problem
damn these euro5 regulations had an impact on performance.
i can easily do 253-255km/h on my 2016 1290SA, no matter if i have headwind or not, and it still has some more to go, but i was never brave enough.
granted, i was getting a wobble at 190-210km/h but then it smoothed out. this looks much more stable. i wonder what it can do with a de-cat and a free flow can
It will be getting harder to modify bikes as a lot more electronics have been introduced to ensure emissions are monitored and it will get worse with EURO6. Dropping the cat and remapping the bike is not really an option in Germany as we have to present the bike every 2 years for emissions testing
euro 5
sad story
Any chance bcoz of the GoPro?
Anything in the wind will affect the stability - but the GoPro is relatively small so the impact is likely small too
Remember the do not exceed 100 warning because of those rims and tires (will melt internal rim rubber band around spoke holes and blow ur F'n tires off ! )...
Do you mean 100 kph? or mph? I sure hope the internal rubber band can handle some heat. My 17/19" spoked set will be my road wheel set on the new R - it will get road tires next week instead of the knobbies that are installed now
Bonus you get to skip doing arms in your gym rotation!
high speed riding is good for core strenght too 😂

Yep 👍
the speedometer shows at least 10 - 15 km/h too much......but that doesn't matter with this bike!
That is my experience too 😉
The bike is a bit shaky on high speed..
It is not the bike - it is rather my baggy KLIM suit and the turbulance from the wind & other traffic.
Hi.i have the 2020.KTM 1290 adventure R..and then i drive more and. 100.miles is shaking and is Unstable the entire front in. and I don't know why But I have a such a big problem I always . drive sportbikes it's my 1st adventure bike And I don't like much. Plus also.. i change for street tires..continental attack 3...still.. the bike shaking.A lot.!👎👎
That sounds terrible and is not normal on this bike. I am no mechanic or is it easy to do this without seeing the bike but I would have a look at how well the wheels are balanced- I have had occasions when the wheels were not balanced correctly and this would impact high speed stability. Also see if the steering head bearing has come too loose and tighten it again. Common issue on the 1290 SA. Best place to go is your dealership of course- have a mechanic ride your bike - they should be able to fix this. Hope this helps- cheers
