I swapped a fully loaded GS 1250 Triple Adventure Black for one of these. Best thing I ever did! (I’m a young 56 by the way 😂) I now have the ability to re-live my R1 days when I want to while taking in the scenery when the mood takes me. Quite frankly the very best motorcycle I have ever owned in 40 years of riding.
I had a fully loaded r1200gsa and my 2022 SAS is a lot more fun to ride. I've done some touring on it and can't wait until next season to do some long trips with it. I'll be 70 next year but this bike makes me feel younger!
I moved ‘down’ to a Multistrada V2S, preferred it to the V4 after three GSs, absolutely love it, looks better than a KTM too.
Good for you Bro. We are a long time dead, it would be a great shame not to live while we are alive. I love reading these kinds of posts. Have fun with that lovely beast.
Im 67 and ride a Multistrada V4s full. I adore it, but the KTM was on my list and may well be when I replace the Multistrada.
The multi 4 year unlimited mileage warranty and sublime ride sold it to me. 👍
New sub for. You
1290 super adventure S owner
Thanks for your quality reports
Jean-Christophe from France. 56 years old !
Just watching this and thought I should mention I have an SAS and an Aprilia RSV Mille , love them both to bits and I have just hit 70yrs old.
I'm closer to 70 than 60 and love my 1290 SAS, whats more had bikes since I was young and this is the best by far. You didnt mention the Radar Cruise Control ....believe me its utterly brilliant when you grasp it, it reacts quicker than you or I can!! So far my average despite ragging it is 56mpg over some pretty stunning mountain roads nearby - or taking it easy and enjoying the ride, which as you suggest with suspension Pro is amazing. Standard tyres are a limiting factor in the wet, but lets face it you dont take risks in the wet, so in the warm and dry they are totally acceptable. Comfort is enhanced not only with heated grips but their ERGO seat range (11 options in total) which can be heated....its wicked! enjoy your time with it and get it in the upper rev ranges....thats when you feel young.....
I am 71 but i m feling ven i am riding the bike its a super bike
feling young
Test road the R and the S... both on road. Since I'll be 95% ON road, going with the S. This will be my sixth bike, first KTM. Nice vid!
A bike for former sports bike riders, I,m now in my 60,s and this is my steed. When I,m on it I just want to keep going and its nice to have some fun with the sports bike especially in the bends.
I like how, when discussing old folks and tech, you passed the [old] Grey Mare. As for the stage of life when having fun and doing dumb things, I haven’t found the upper age limit yet :) Great review and I’m looking forward to your video on the suspension.
Well done Kate, excellent put together video. Lots of great information to mull over when considering this bike and others in this sector. Love the humour too👏👏...there are always going to be grumpy people who love to belittle others but there is obviously something very wrong or missing in their lives...bless. enjoying the channel so much 👍😎👏👏👏👏
I'm 54 and it will probably be my next bike. That's if you can get me off my 1290 GT. That will be one hard sell!!! love it. great videos Kate.
Great ride 'n restraint keeping the ticket man away.
One thing Kate is cost of service ( a lot don't look at maintenance cost).
Awesome Video, Beautiful KTM 1290 Super Adventure R
It sure is!
Great vlog Kate. I have the 2018 SAS and love it. At 54 yrs young when I swing my short legs over I become a hooligan, especially when you hear the Akrapovic pipe perform. Looking forward to your next video. Safe riding.
I'm 69. I have a 2021 Super Adventure S. When I moved to Spain from the US I moved over from a ZX-14 (ZZE-1400) to the KTM. It took me a while to properly appreciate the Super Adventure. It's power is adequate but it's not a rocket. It handles well and it weighs less than my Kaw. I finally figured out that I had been a bit unrealistic with my expectations. It's not some sort of a magic machine. It is is a solid motorcycle that does most things well enough to be just a good general purpose street bike. When I accepted it for what it is I learned to appreciate it for what it is.
The best bike out their is the one that suits you. It’s not up to anyone to tell anyone else what they should be riding!
Yes! But marketing preys on the weak.
@@Ukmongoose3 thanks for the reply. I was referring to bikes as being very personal. One man might like a GS, don’t make it right for another. Nothing wrong with vloggers giving there opinion, they have there uses but no one can know what bike until is right until they ride it for some time.
@@benkelly2190 Hey Ben, I wasn’t being personal or specific really. It is interesting though, to postulate where we would be without very persuasive advertising. ‘The Long Way Down’ for instance, was a very clever way of shifting the biking zeitgeist away from the perceived anti social sportsbike and aiming the mainstream focus firmly at what is effectively a two wheeled car. Most likely a step towards attempting to banish sports riding altogether, in favour of ‘safer’ biking. Just a thought.
You nailed it. I’m 69 and have the 1290 SAR. Best bike ever.
I love my 1290SAS, far and away the best bike I have ever ridden. Everything is effortless, seal, gravel, it just does it and well
Yea Kate I’m the grandad with the gs 1200 which I love but you are right to make the younger rider think about their options re adventure bikes. Don’t like the look of KTMS but they have their attractions which young people might like. Well done, good video.
I'm hoping to get the 1090 by next spring. Sat on it and found it so comfortable, plus none of my arthritic joints hurt. I tried it as I can't afford the GS model I want but I have a feeling that my future will be orange!
Hi Kate. The KTM is a lovely bike but I now have the desert X and it is sublime…. But then I am only 59 so tend to stick to the younger person bikes….. 😂
After years of owning GSs and GSAs I've finally switched to one of these and I'm really delighted with it. And I'm an old git..
3 BMW s adventure bikes later and Im on a KTM SAS!!! Im sixty five but I totally understand your point, I love it!
A review on the Ducati scrambler 2023 would be a good vlog
Info from the motorcycle live this year is that it is changed and improved for next year
i bought a 1200 gs back in 2004. The guy in the BMW shop thought that i may have been the youngest to buy one at that time. I was 23 when I ordered it, and 24 when I picked it up 10 months later, when they arrived in shops. I loved my GS, even if I looked like a 50 year old man on it. hahahahaha
I leave the anti-dive on almost all the time. I found that with it off, the dive from the long travel suspension was dramatic when barreling into a tight turn. Plus, I used to own a BMW K1200S and got used to no front end dive. The quick shifter works great on my 1290 SAS and makes an already fast ADV that much faster...you can exit a turn and just bang off the shifts riding that wave of torque.
Love my SAS after 7 GS,s I won’t be going back! And I’m 59.
Was very impressed when I got to test ride this bike! Went into the test ride thinking, nah this isn’t going to be for me.. wow was I surprised, loved and actually enjoyed it😁
J'ai 68 ans et j'adore cette moto qui s'adresse à mon avis à des conducteurs confirmés. Poids et vitesse sont difficile à gérer pour un néophyte. Merci pour cette vidéo
You should try the Super Adventure R, that bike makes you feel like a teenager 👌🏼
The important thing is to keep the enthusiasm and continue to make the next video I always wish you good luck
SHE’s ONLY GONE & DONE IT AGAINN!!
Never mind the bike…. Love the Humour!! 😂😂
Great review, clearly explained.. love it!!
Agree with you Kate, I’ve got the SAR and it reminds me of the sports bikes I used to ride 20 years ago, I’ve had a few tralies in the last few years (the 1290 is my third), this is by FAR my favourite!
I am 23 soon to be 24 and as soon as I get my category A I'm getting a triumph tiger 1200 gt explorer or bmw gs1200r adventure or a suzuki vstrom 650 i want practicality and comfort plus better for pillions
Had mine for 18 months and never laughed or enjoyed riding a bike so much. BUT from September I've had nothing but bother with the tech pack. It's currently sat in my KTM dealer waiting for KTM to dial into it. And from what I can gather I'm not on my own. I love the bloody thing I really do but with the warranty running out in 6 months is it a keeper. Mmmmmm I think it'll be getting moved on.
Reliability is not a strong point for KTM and if they are out of warranty the costs can be mind blowing 🙄
That’s why I sold on my 1290SDR after a year, too many electronic niggles. And my dealers wasn’t too quick sorting them
@@mbal4052 I had to wait 6 wks. Not until I lost my shit did they come.
KTM Keep Taking Money, my brother had the same issue with his Duke 690, he had two of them and he said never again.
Got rid of my 1190 adventure r because it was so unreliable. Engine is awesome, electronics are crap. Never own one out of warranty.
Great vlog Kate, I would say an alternative (to the KTM) 'young persons' adventure bike is the Multistrada V4S for all the reasons you have chosen the KTM.........and nothing to do with the fact I have one! 😊
And it's £5000 more for similar spec
@@fjrboy True - but you get what you pay for. KTM do suffer with the electronic glitches. For example the KTM 1290 SAS I test rode the ‘ignition on’ button on the right hand switchgear failed when I stopped for petrol. After a degree of trial and error it worked long enough to return to the dealership. I have had no issues with my Multistrada V4 whatsoever.
@@bigal5895 I'm glad you have had no issues, the V4 seems a great bike...this is my second 1290, no issues with either bike
Whilst im only 27, and have only been riding a few months, my first adventure bike will be a GSA 1200 2019 to replace my car back end of next week. Whilst id love the 1290, i feel 160hp is too much me being an newer rider.
Current bike is an F900XR TE.
Adventure bike..... This is what i want....its my furure step ..... at moment i am trainee just not so long time ago started driving ( L plate)
Im 31, had my 1250GSA for 2 years, love it, low maintenance, 5 year warranty with unlimited miles. Tested the SAS, like it. Not sure if it’s enough for a swap tho. Sucks going back to chain driven bikes.

Hi Kate, you really opened my eyes with riding experience.
I've ridden the Ducati V4S (had it for a couple of days), which I really enjoyed; it got me thinking about updating my Pikes Peak, and you've managed to get me considering moving away from Ducati!
But, like everything else in this world, it will probably come down to pricing here in Australia as well.
Stay safe mate 👍
Dear Kate could you do a review on the 2023 Honda 500X as it could be a good bike to many people all your reviews are good content👍
Great video as always. I personally think another contender to this for the younger folk (I am only a young 37 myself lol) is the Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE. While the stats are not as high in terms of BHP and Torque. The styling is typical Kawasaki 'yobbish young', especially in the green, which I happen to have lol. Again, all subjective, but I wouldnt rule the Versys out. Without the panniers and top box on its a cracking and fun bike to ride around spirited on country roads. Also loaded with tech, LCDs, ride modes, automatic suspention adjustment, ABS, TC, bi-directional quick shifter, heated grips etc etc
Nice vlog. If I had the money for it, and I could knock 30 years off my age, this could be my bike. Very enjoyable vlog Kate. Big thumbs up 👍👍🇳🇱
Sold mine a few months ago. It was brilliant but the electronic bugs drained all my enthusiasm for the bike away . Now I’m with the S1000 XR and I’m loving it 😉 Nice video. Thank you 👌
What bugs did you have and were they not covered under warranty?
@@kevinlawton5761 ok thank you for asking. It was two types of red warning messages. The first was “General Failure” . And it was annoying. After the first Service they eliminate that but didn’t said or identified any malfunction and it was not satisfying for me. They just told that the electronic central unit of the bike had to be resettled and erased the faulty instruction. The second time, a few thousand Kms after a new flashy warning message “ SUSPENSION”, came up on the dashboard and that was enough for me! They told that it was probably another bug from the technical programming , the same origin of the first, and that if I felt the bike was running ok, probably it was another false alarm message and it broken my heart to acknowledge that they were telling me that it was not a real problem but something that I should accept living with, nothing major…I made my mind to sell it fast, until I had a serious problem for neglecting any future message like that one, were nothing but instead was something really wrong, like the story of Peter and the wolf, you know?… They never said they would charge me to solve it, as the bike was new, but I lost the confidence. So, sadly (at the time) I decided to sell.
S1000xr absolute beast of a machine. Enjoy it !
Mates got one but his is 1290super adventure r 2017 he is 6foot 7 fits him well and goes really well a bike thar bike shouldn't go round corners that good but it will i am still on sport bikes but at some point being over 50 i might have to swop to up right bikes but anybody swoppi g i think you will have fun
Good to see I'm not my age, I'm near 60 and have one, it's awesome 🤣🤣🤣
I've ridden a couple and they are fantastic!!... A face only a mother could love though!!. Cheers.
I don't give a shit what bike I'm "supposed" to have for my age-range group. Get what you want- and f**k what other people think. 😆👍🏻
haha yess sir!! That's why I have an 'old mans GS' LOL!
@@UsernameKate 🤣 The GS is the best bike in the world and everyone knows it. It's an excellent choice. Miserable old goats will always find something to judge people for, regardless.
Great video very informative tec you some how remembered without a cheat sheet. Just wished you took the time to show these kids how to pick that bike up properly if it happens to tip over. Ride on.
Another great vlog Kate looking forward to seeing your next one ride safe lovely 😍
That's, I'm buying the KTM following Grandma Kate's advice! 😉👵
They are a blast, fast, handle great, and you can do dirt and slab. Your just not limited to slab.
I fall into this category want to go a little off-road but not old enough to be an ADV dad or middle life crisis. Reason I was gonna get a s1000xr but this bike seems to be the XR but you can take it off-road.
That's a good way to put it! Its a more... 'youth' aimed adv bike 🤣 and by youth I mean 30s onwards in adv bike terms 🤣
@@UsernameKate well I’m 34 so feels like a perfect bike for someone my age especially here in Colorado as we have a lot of dirt roads
Wybierz wersje R ktm super adventure 1290 r będziesz jeździł off road.
Great quality camera work. Good review too.
The KTM SA S? So far the best I bought and I had many, issues? None so far and I have a dealer who takes his responsibilities seriously 😇
Great video Kate! The best tech available is the hill hold assist. I live in a city in the mountains. When you run into a stop sign or stop light on a steep section you realize immediately how useful it is. Especially in heavy traffic. Best!
Turned mine off, when paddling backwards say on a tight turn it comes on!....nearly had me off on a camber
20 mph in 3rd gear pretty good 👍
Motorcycles are exciting, why not ride something that lives up to the idea. I'm not a youngster, but my want for a motorcycle that will adventure, cut up a set of turns like a very sharp knife, and turn a 10 second 1/4 mile. ish. KTM, they have the number. Yes my 1090 has about twice the capabilities I will ever have, but TWIST, SHIFT, GO. it never gets old.
Good review Kate, when are you selling your GS & getting one 🙂 I've owned a Multistrada & three GS's, plus many more. I've had my 2020 SAS for two years and 26,000 miles and love it.
The trend now is for the smaller mid range adventure bikes especially for off road, this would be a nightmare to pick up in the mud fully ladened, good for long tours on the tarmac thou.
Nice video granny.
Hi Kate, I think you are fundamentally right in your assessment, and as you said you will always have exceptions. For me the KTM & the Ducati are amazing machines that I would have considered, only for one aspect, for me personally they miss a shaft drive. Thank you.
When I think of KTM I think I'm never buying another one.
Exc450:
wheel bearings needing to be replaced every 140 miles
Headlight bulb blowing on every ride.
Switch gear failing.
Sidestand failing.
All.in the first year.
1190 adventure r:
Radiator rotted from the inside after 3 years £500
Starter motor useless under 5°c
ABS failure warning constantly on the dash
Centre stand rotted from the inside and snapped off.
Never own one out of warranty
I'm 41 and own a Tuono. But very rarely do I truly enjoy it unless I'm wringing it's neck. I do more and more long days of riding and it drinks fuel and saps my energy making for a tiring and unenjoyable ride most of the time.
I've been looking at what to get next and my head really wants one of these but my heart is trying to tell me I'm not old enough.
Oh if that's how you're feeling, get one test ridden 😈
@@UsernameKate I think I'm going to. My wife wants to start coming out on rides this year, so I think if we do a long day on the Tuono one weekend, then take her for a test ride on a Super Adventure then it may just sell itself 😁👍
Great video.. have you any ideas how much the bike costs.. in the different packages? Love the content, cheers
As an old fogey and having owned various GS'ers over the last ten tears I love my 1290S it makes my laugh but can be a pussy cat as you showed 30mph and in 4th or even 5th and no complaining from the bike at all.
Kate yes young and gorgeous xx and i must be knackered lol 51 and just started love your videos but your a tourer girl and brew just like myself that’s y triumph rs ticks all the boxes and have upgrades soon SP Race Carbon coming bringb summer back 😀
Tested a 2022 1290 Super Adv and made the mistake of getting back onto my 2017 S1000Xr. I found the KTM clunky, especially the Qs compared to the older BMW.
Keep up the good work Kate…
Can u recommend a female motorcycling jacket for the shorter female rider please.
My partner finds all jackets too long in the arms..
Thanks
Brilliant bike, so much fun and lots of useful tech. 👍
Im looking at the adventure market at the moment, went to the bike show so I could try a few, being 5'6 my options are limited!! I never even had the KTM on the short list... Till I sat on one.
I'm your height and have one of these. It's absolutely fine. I agree with Phil Woods on what he says about it. Fast, fun loads more economical than the multi v4 and also loads cheaper.
To be fair, wether in jest or all seriousness, you've offered a very fair and valid arguement.
A KTM could be, a 'young persons adventure bike'.
For me personally, I think 160bhp, is too much for an ADV, unnecassary amount of power.
I'm also not a huge fan of the amount of tech, on modern bikes. Try fixing it in the middle of Mongolia?!
The fact that KTM, like many manufactures, fit all this tech on the bike, but charge extra, to the customer to 'unlock' most of it, I find annoying. Sell it with 'most' of the tech, heated grips, etc. and have things like, super dooper suspension as an extra, IMO.
I 'almost' bought a KTM, I was looking at replacing my BMW R1200r sport, for a KTM 890 adventure, so I can ride some greenlanes, further afield. I currently use a Himalayan, so travelling long distances is not easy. All was good, until I priced insurance.......
I'm 57 years young, held bike licence for over 30 years, and currently have 8 years NCD.
My insurance quote was.........£300+ MORE than my BMW!!!!!
I'd be interested to see, what you are quoted Kate?!
Anywho, great video, fair and concise arguement/vues on the KTM, look forward to more.
Ride safe and have fun, Grumps.
One thing you may have missed during a short test ride is the death wobble at 40 mph that people are experiencing with any of the different size KTM branded top-boxes.
Not experienced that
Nor me and I have the KTM(Shad), which is big
I have a R1250GS HP edition and i love it, would not switch to a bike with a chain again 🙂
Jedz testowo ktm super adventure 1290 s a juz nic nie będzie takie samo.
Went from a 1250GSA to a KTM 1290SAS. Perfect bike would be that KTM engine in the beemer. Batshit crazy 🤪
A guidarla sulle strade aperte è troppo facile! Prova a guidarla nel traffico di Roma. L'ho posseduta anche io sono alto 1,76 abito a Roma e nel c'entro cittadino non riuscivo a gestirla. Sono passato sempre al 1290 ma al GT. Vado che è una meraviglia. Buona giornata Belllissima.🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Your strong person love to see your video ✌️😍
I wish the KTM 1290 was a bit more passenger friendly like the GS. Then I could consider it as an option.
KTM dropped the ball with Charlie and Ewan, just think what could have been... happy with my GS, and I am relatively young lol still U40 and still ride my sport and street bikes on occasion.
Not really. The ready to race image doesnt fit with those two. Ktm is more Lyndon Poskit, Chris Birch type of brand. And yes Bmw has sold a lot of Gs because of Ewan and Charlie, but ktm still overtook bmw as being the biggest Mc- manufacturer in europe years ago. I think ktm are fine with their decision...
@@pgkr67 it is the, what could have been... best selling brand now is Royal Enfield, KTM have done better now in purchasing Husky and GasGas
They thought ewan and Charlie would fail and damage their brand. The costliest mistake since Decca turned down the Beatles.
I wouldn't touch one with a bargepole. The reliability and service at the dealer network is pants.
It wouldn't have made it round the block never mind round the world.
@@paulyflyer8154they did fail quite miserably but it was all covered up really well . Ktm could see they had zero experience and not much ability but they did miss a huge sales boost and could have covered it all up and pretended they did well like bmw did . Honesty and stupidity
When I think of KTM, I think of Comet mopeds back in 1973. I saw a few but they were not as popular as the Puch models. Back then the Kreidler Florett RS was the orange missile. I bought a 1957 Wittler instead - only £5!.
I'm only 66 and definitely too young for a KTM adventure bike. I need something reliable, light, with good fuel economy and a short wheelbase. I'm retired and don't have time to wait for my bike coming back from the workshop. I want to be on the road. I do my touring on a SV650.
I can’t get past the locust headlights. But that’s just my personal taste.
🤭 it's definitely marmite!
Un consiglio! Quando racconti le tue senzazioni, non staccare mai le mani dal manubrio. Hai in mano un arma impropria 👍👍👍
I have one and love it.
Great bike but I think they are ugly and I hate orange, most of my friends have had issues with electrics too. I’m a young 63 and sadly went down the GS route, two standards and a 1250 GSA. So I tried the Multistrada for a change, both the V4 and V2 and I bought the V2S. Only 115bhp and only 225kg wet, total missile on a B road, and no slouch elsewhere. You can keep the 150hp+ missiles, I get to use all the power and handling with a brilliant soundtrack and for short legged ageing gits like me it’s perfect.
I’m 23 turning 24 and i feel weird saying that i rather be on an adventure bike than a super-sport like my friends.
Great bike, however , KTM gremlins are becoming more prevalent in the electronics. Still think BMW build a better bike and have a better dealer support facility. That’s why I changed.
The KTM 1290 Adv S is the _perfect_ young person's bike? I tend to agree, but only if that young person has the skill, stature and physical ability to handle a tall, powerful and very heavy bike. The 1290 or any 450# plus bike is no fun stuck in mud, pinned against a tree, sliding backwards down a slope, stuck on a boulder or sliding sideways on sand or gravel by a steep drop-off. Generally speaking, I can go with the statement that the full line of KTMs is great and in some cases best in their classes. From the 390s through the 6/7/890s to the 1200s they are fantastic. Just don't try to sell every _young person_ a 475#, 160 HP monster with a seat height of 34" that costs over $20,000. I would hazard a guess that these specs would appeal to very few young folks' desires.
S
Anyone who drives a motorcycle is definitely 'young' relative to their age peers!
Great bike for everyone but wrong you have to pay extra to have parts of the packs switched on 🙁
I just came back from a 8 day bike trip in South Africa where I rented a Honda Africa Twin with DCT and a shit load of electronic tech. As an older biker, with lots of off road experience, I found all this tech completely useless and downright dangerous. The bike nearly killed me when the electronic nanny kicked in at 100 km/h on a rough dirt road when I needed a lot of power to get me out of a nasty tank slapper and it cut all the power. I was frantically looking for soft sheep to hug as I had to dig deep in to my bucket of experience to stay on top of the bike. Give me my old R1200GS without any help, any day thanx...
Nice video
Grandma 😂 give up you’re one of the most badass women I know 😘
Get a major service done at a ktm dealer. Then the mantra becomes "ready to remortgage"
But do young people have A licence class bikes these days? Bearing in mind average age of motorcyclists now is approaching 50 if you take 125s out out of the equation which are mostly ridden by younger people then I bet larger bikes are ridden by over 50s in the main. Going down Matlock Bath on a Sunday certainly backs that up
Kate there seems a lot of average speed cameras is that the cat and fiddle ? Lol 😟
She sings and girly whoo! Made me laugh
Do you think a pillion would be comfortable on this? Trying to find an adventure bike that wife and I could tour on. Was leaning GS 1300 but this is about 10k less
Same here, what have you gone for ?
@@user-go9zh6ty8n purchased the Multistrada V4S. Wife is super comfy on it. Only negative would be 140-170 mile range but we usually get off to stretch before then anyway.
Why this instead of a GS or RT? Please advise.
KAAATTTTEEEE!!!
Finely you showing THE BIKE 😂
But KTMs are f***ing ORANGE.
