With no disrespect to the victims, I hate when they use autism as an excuse it is so disgusting but also insulting to every autistic person who would never do such a henous thing.

I think it’s ridiculous that the doctor said his autism wasn’t a major factor in his killing but the other guy said the way he stabbed repeatedly was probably to due with his autism. I’m sorry, but that’s bs. Repetitive motion and behavior are continuous, not just a one night thing. Stabbing is not a stem. Am I wrong?

No you are not wrong. These sweeping generalizations are not supposed to be made by seasoned professionals, particularly if they have not personally evaluated the person they are discussing. There is a tendency by a lot of people to focus only on one factor which is completely unrealistic and to make “cookie cutter” pronouncements. Few of these people have worked directly and daily over a long period of time with this population and they tend to become too reliant on medical diagnoses versus personal dynamics with these killers, particularly whatever is trendy at the moment. (It takes a very long time into their sentence before an offender feels comfortable fully divulging all the details of their life; it is common sense that most people don’t do this at the time they are initially evaluated, an obvious fact which seems to escape the public). I find the problem of rigid over reliance a little more pronounced in UK documentaries, but it is present in the US as well.
A great great deal goes on inside these people’s families to produce them; this gets very little discussion on these shows and the public remains confused and cynical about the superficial causes given for the “whys.” For example, the absence of any genuine human bonds inside these families produces an absence of what is called an ability to “attach.” This looks similar to but is entirely different than autism even though both groups appear detached. As one murderer explained to me, “People have no idea how unbelievably cold the families of murderers are inside.” In some killers, both might be present.
You will get a much better discussion of all the details by reading books on a case which is not cut down to fit in a 50 minute slot. Accurate evaluation requires sifting and debating as many facts and theories as you can on a case.

Autism effects each person so differently. Many with Autism have a hard time understanding their emotions and can struggle with empathy and such. I think this kids Autism effected that area a lot and the combo of the Psychosis was a recipe for disaster. Granted I think what he did was horrifying and he should be in a jail where he can get mental help for thr rest if his life. I feel so bad for the victims and their families. I hope they can get some peace.

@froginthemoss Yes...some are hyper empathetic while others with autism can be on the opposite end of that. Autism affects every person who has it differently.

Because people rarely know those things. Parents don’t actually care to notice much. I don’t find it unusual at all. 😂 Silent neglect. They aren’t around to see what abuses happened to them, and only stick to what’s socially expected of them as parents. Most parents don’t actually care. They just want a child like a puppy or trophy, and abandon them daily like furnishings in a house. Also, nobody really cares to give benefit of the doubt to an unlikable person. Especially children. A child has no voice or power, and will always be belittled to an ungrateful evil brat on any convenient occasion. It’s the status quo, unless you are cute or popular or loved by many.

But I have never once thought of killing anyone. While I understand making sure people know that autism isn’t just one box- lack of empathy doesn’t mean lack of morals. Competent psychologists KNOW that autism in no way involves agression. Autistic people don't attack others in any way. On the contrary, they can react to loud noise or to being attacked, by screaming of running away, but never attack anyone for no reason at all. Who is this guy? why is he insisting on him being autistic and moreover, saying that his autism has anything to do with his actions? They should remove him from his practice.

I believe they are experiencing what we all do when we talk to ourselves in our head...for example "hhmm should I go to the shops now or later" "no i'll go later when there is not so much traffic". I think of those of Fairweather’s ilk as mutations of nature. Favorable mutations enhance survivability; unfavorable ones decrease it. The positive characteristics are retained within the species group and passed on through the generations. The negative type tends toward extinction, but a small sample manages to survive and perhaps even reproduce, rarely. Then we have to account for social environmental factors and cultural differences. Of course, this is all very complex. . . . As for sentencing, Fairweather should never walk free again. He’s a mutation society can do without.

My niece is autistic and doesn't do that kind of thing. It's when a person is on The Spectrum or has ADHD and it's used as an excuse for the atrocities people commit, it shows a poor misunderstanding of both conditions. I know people with autism and AFDHD none of them would turn into serial killers none of them commit crimes against humanity. None of them commit unimaginable atrocities.
That kind of behaviour and those actions are a mental disorder that isn't being cared for. I live in America. You can walk into any emergency room and tell them you have disturbing thoughts and that you have the desire to act out those desires. You'll be held in the psych ward for at least a few days and given an emergency evaluation. You can do this if you're suicidal too. I don't know if other countries have the same policy as a way to prevent you from harming yourself and others.

I think that's the biggest stage of nature & nurture impacting your behavior. Your brain is developed enough to make your own decisions but not enough to fully grasp the consequences and long-term effects. The body is going through major changes and you and your peers are at the age where you're dissecting every little thing to fit in & find your niche.

Evil in conjunction with it being a child might not be something that sits right with people, but it's a fact. Otherwise, we would not have disturbing cases like this. They can be as young as six years old. Innocence is a whimsical notion anymore.

Nuts how people are so insecure about things that some other people actually love

I don't recall them talking about this kid's parents. Where were they in all of this? Did he have siblings? I don't think that was mentioned either. Surely his mother, who was mentioned once when they said he alleged he was talking on the phone with her, had to be involved somehow and might have shed some light on why her son was acting this way.
I find it odd that nothing about his parents was mentioned or his home life. All I recall was that he was bullied in school and then decided to be a bully himself to make himself fit in better.

I sincerely hope they reevaluate him after the age of 18 to properly diagnose him with Psychopathic Personality Disorder because that needs to be on his record and be very clear. 27 years is ridiculous. Each life was worth 14 years? What were their eyes worth? So sad. I lift those families up to the Lord. Also a lot of misinformation about autism, none of which is the fault of the host. I hope this never happens again, but the odds are he will do it again when he gets out.

Ah, ha says the retired RN. Right out of the gate we have “ hearing voices” and “paranoia”. Also, we have the teen saying he didn’t feel bad about the killing. The in situations just with the hearing voices and paranoia the onus is on the parents to ensure their child gets referred to a psychiatrist. Also, it likely would be discovered that this teen had abused, killed small animals as a child.

I think this episode lacked depth. The answer stays rather unclear. Usually there'd be a female psychologist who'd add to the explanation, explaining what might and might not explain it. The criminologist always assigns it to a way to get in control, which may very well be true, but many people who try that don't end up murdering, so the other insights tend to add a lot to the explanation as well. I'm still confused about whether this child had empathy or if he was callous, what set him to get obsessed about serial killers, what kind of roll psychosis can play in such a thing and how common it is for voices to be this bad and how likely it is that people are able to say no to them, etc.

Him being autistic and obsessed with serial killers, should not have been allowed, let alone the obsession in a "normal" child, he was a child when he murdered. His parents should have been on top of that.

  • @RonjaBlom82

So not only are they talking about us autistic people in a very degrading way, but they are also using every stigma around it and also a lot of what they are saying isn't true. Most people can't read other people's minds, having a problem with social ques is not knowing what you mean with maybe, or saying something but meaning something else I.e the unspoken words. And saying people with autism instead of autistic people is so bad because it perpetute that it's a "sickness/illnes" and not something you are born with. Being autistic is an important sentence to solidify that it's a part of what makes us, us.
