  • (No animals or meat products are portrayed in this program). When new regulations required Salt Spring Island's meat producers to take their animals off-island for processing, local production plummeted nearly in half. In response, the Salt Spring Agricultural Alliance obtained grants to create a local meat processing facility for this important local food product. Chair Anne Macey gives a tour of the facility before it was put into use - from animal holding pens to humane harvesting, processing, meat cutting and packaging. This small local operation is a far cry from the enormous inhumane confined animal feedlot operations (CAFOs) where most meat is processed. Episode 311. [plantofarm.org]

Self financing such a big thing in a community is awesome!

Much of this interview could have been done in place with less harsh acoustics, and still tell us the same story.

Why it is important to assure people that there are no actual animals or meat products shown? If the animals can undergo the slaughter, why can we not at least witness it? An argument can be made that the trend toward "happy meat" just makes people more comfortable the unnecessary raising and slaughter of animals. Why not just go whole food plant based, a healthier diet, now advocated by Kaiser Permanente and many health organizations. It's disappointing to us that Peak Moment has moved towards supporting meat consumption. I wonder if the producers have ever seen Cowspiracy? Considering that animal agriculture, including grass fed, is a major cause of environmental problems and resource depletion, what more important issue could this show about sustainability address??

Good point, Susan. I've wanted to witness such a slaughter, because I feel it is part of my responsibility as a meat-eater--to know the full circle of life and death and life, of our needing to eat to live. I view this tour as a "foot in the door" for people, a tiptoe into even considering viewing a slaughter. Your comment encourages me to take the next step in future.

I would search the channel for "vegan" or "vegetarian", there was a great video about a vegetarian turned back to eating meat, might have been a vegan. Anyways, wonderful channel Janaia, as always.

That's exactly the kind of pro-meat bias on this channel that has caused me to stop watching it. I share the environmental ethic of the channel, but after seeing Cowspriracy and doing subsequent research about the huge impact of animal agriculture on not only global warming (incljuding grass fed) but the very serious problems of resource depletion, I'm vegan for life. Every day that saves some 1100 gallons of fresh water per person. Puts my rain barrel efforts in perspective.

So, show your science and your own objectivity.

Aw, someone watched one documentary, became a vegan, and thinks she's better than everyone else.. i would have never guessed someone like that would show up here and try to get in an argument with strangers on the internet.
