  • “We’ve had 50 years of unusually stable weather… What do we need to do now, to garden in times that are less predictable?” Plant breeder Carol Deppe, author of The Resilient Gardener: Food Production and Self-Reliance in Uncertain Times, suggests growing a wider variety of crops adapted to conditions where you are; crops needing minimum inputs; and varying gardening patterns with the year. “Short season crops are a premium,” she asserts. She discusses seed saving, and storing enough seeds so everyone in your neighborhood can be gardening if need be. She’s a big fan of growing potatoes and squash to extend each season’s food, plus beans and corn for long-term storage. Carol is breeding seeds with resilience for unpredictable conditions, including open source seeds which anybody can use as they wish without patent restrictions. Episode 335. I think that Carol Deppe should receive a Nobel Peace Prize.

The open source seed initiative could save the world from corporate monopoly of seeds, guaranteeing a way out of their control.

Some extremely useful tips including hoarding seed: drying and freezing bought seed (if necessary) to extend seed life. I have a treasured (but unfortunately dog-chewed) copy of Deppe's first book on plant breeding but was unaware of her subsequent books. Great video and an enormously wise and very far-sighted woman! She should be advising Homeland Security on issues of food security. I would suggest that Jerusalem artichokes (sunchokes) are another must-have crop. They're an irrepressible, no-fail crop that can be left in the soil in winter until needed, and while the tuber is not particularly inspiring sunchokes make the tastiest flour I have yet come across.

I am very impressed by the work both of u do.
Now more than ever we need to return to nature and learn what many of us have almost forgotten.
We are in the process of starting community gardens in South Florida where growing is a true pleasure.
Please keep the good work going. Thank you!

Wonderful video! I have one item to contribute to meat eaters. The meat rabbit can be utilized to make a full sustainable circle. I learned what plant based foods will sustain them, if commercial grain is not available. Raised rabbit meat is the lowest in fat. Their manure is fantastic for direct fertilizing. Yes we are experiencing climate change in central New Hampshire. We are also experiencing the beginnings of a draught in June, so I am using drip irrigation in our gardens early. We commercially log and I see Red Maple trees dying at the tops. Not the NH I knew in 1976, when I was 26 ! As 4th generation farmers, we are keeping our eyes open!

As you get older and cannot move around you may experience an inability to move around. Like osteoarthritis which can limit movement. Also she is a writer which could mean she has spent a lot of her time sitting. Also not good for you. I hurt my back a few years ago shifting lots of gravel and now when its cool i find movement limited. Being skinny isnt always healthy either.

Well, our environment's a toxic medley and the corporate medical establishment is allergic to cures--so there's that.
