Santana and the Who at Tanglewood was so great in 1970. They just came off Woodstock and then took that magic on the road, and then, All over the World!!!
Incredible performance from the Abraxas album. Santana was a full group project at this point . The only reason the band was called Santana was that Carlos Santana had the union dues. The entire band is incredible including the late Dave brown on the Fender. Also, Greg Rolie shows how to play a Hammond organ!1
Anyone notice that Michael merely has a minimal garage-band basic drum set? And he sounds so incredible with just the basic of all gear. That is TALENT. Clear and simple. Talent.
Yes It is remarkable, but you have to consider , beyond his "amazing solo". The Harmony on this masterpiece is played by Michael and Chepito, and this is why this is recognized as pure Latin Rock .
+Green Infrastructure Buffalo NY Buffalo NY alot of us who grew up here in SF, noticed that years ago..I remember a bunch of guys who liked guys w/huge kits, and yet never really stayed in the pocket like Michael Shrieve..ever..to this day, one of the best drummers EVER..
Played this in my first garage band back in '69. Still to this day, it's one of the most adrenaline pumping songs to play. As soon as I start that opening bass line, the juice starts flowing and I'm time-tripping back to '69. What a rush!
I wish they were still around - EXACTLY like this night. This is historic and memorable and emotional and beyond incredible... all rolled in to one jam in one night by one band. This type of music and performance is LONG GONE.
Truly a diamond... Santana at his raw peak with his super band!!!!!!!!! Shrieve, bass the percussionists and everyone all in sync... AWESOME, A GEM!!!!
Sweet Jesus - this is the best video I've ever seen of them (Woodstock was inferior). It really captures what it was ALL about with this version of band - monster rhythm section and SHAMELESS pursuit of the body-high that it produced. It's what snagged us into Santana's world and shot him to the 2013 Kennedy Honors award. BTW, Rolling Stone panned them with their first review. We didn't give a shit.
Pasa el tiempo y la vida de las personas, pero no este tipo de música, es imperecedera. Creo que jamás habrá unos percusionistas tan "verdad" como el de Santana de esta época. Bravo Chepito, eres cojo-nudo.
Loved the Woodstock video because nobody knew who Santana was and they were floored. But the sound quality indoors is so much better. Now this might be my favorite live video of all time.
Holy cow!! The Woodstock version is a pretty amazing moment. But this is a way better gig. I've always thought of Shrieve's Woodstock solo as the only rock drum solo I could groove too. BUT EVEN THAT aspect of this performance top the Woodstock version. Not to take anything away from their Woodstock arrival, at all. This is just so fully badass. I hope "Smooth" era fans can feel how raw and wild a improvising live band Santana began as.
+C.J. O'Dell you are so right..growing up w/this band, i thought all drum solos were like this..at other shows, people went to the head or somewhere, and i always wondered why, until i realized there was only 1 Michael Shrieve..most drummers, while very good, can't hold a candle to him..especially on his bare-bones kit..amazing still to this day..45 years later..
Randall Maull Yes.... Randall..... silly me..... how could I think anything else..... you are so correct. Thanks for the gentle reminder. Much Love to you and your's :)
can't stop watchin this -superb, is there a better live gig than this from that era,Was 17 when they played this, best time of my life for music, will never be beaten.wow
SANTANA NO NESESITABA DE TANTA MAJESTUOSIDAD DE ESCENARIOS NI DE TONELADAS DE EQUIPO COMO AHORA PRESUMEN MUCHAS BANDAS FAMOSAS DEL ROCK SIMPLEMENTE EL BATERISTA CON BOMBO TAROLA 1 TOM AEREO Y UNO DE PISO SONABA INCREIBLE EL TECLADISTA CON SU ORGANO Y SU LESLIE ERA FELIZ LAS PERCUSIONES DESDE CONGAS HASTA TIMBALES Y MARACAS Y POR SUPUESTO LA GUITARRA DEL MAESTRO SANTANA SUPER
Carlos... amazing then. Still amazing today. 1970, all should take a lesson from this. Some have. Thanks! When I laid in a bed in a hospital full of amputees from the war (Vietnam), we heard about Woodstock. Many of us wished we could have been there!!
I think the dude with the maracas is actually pretty funny :) I bet if I was him, I would do nothing less being up there in such an awesome moment having the time of my life with those maracas ;) I also find the audience responding to him with energy and if you think about it, he did get people energized as well. Reminds me of the percussionist that played with Spyro Gyra that went on to become a big shot to this day... That guy was a clown on stage totally out of control.
I'm pretty sure that's vocalist Rico Reyes, the guy that sang lead on "Guajira" (off Santana III) and contributed a lot of other background vocals. He later went on to sing with Azteca, a Santana "offshoot" that also had Neal Schon, Lenny White (Return to Forever) among others.
Can you upload the whole show uncut. You have better quality than the Graham web sight. Please, please, please put up the rest. This is rare quality early Santana at their best.
Can't beat this original group of musicians in Santana. They sounded exceptional together
Santana and the Who at Tanglewood was so great in 1970. They just came off Woodstock and then took that magic on the road, and then, All over the World!!!
One of the best jams of the last century.
I would go so far as saying that this is one of the greatest live rock performances of all time.
Agree!
You have a strong argument for sure.
Not bad

Santana ...undesputed one of the greatest American bands.
Michael and Jose made such a great duo. Miss this style of music so bad.
estos si son artistas! no lo que pasan por la television ahora
David Brown was my inspiration to play bass.
Luther Reigns He was Really good...
A legend!
Me too.

Green Infrastructure Buffalo NY Buffalo NY Most of the best do have a smaller set.
Thats all they need
Yeah right on Mike has these incredible chops and at 15 years old playing with Santana at Woodstock
The Man Is Simply A Beast
Played this in my first garage band back in '69. Still to this day, it's one of the most adrenaline pumping songs to play. As soon as I start that opening bass line, the juice starts flowing and I'm time-tripping back to '69. What a rush!

I do too, it seems real music has died.
Love it so badly!!!!
They are still awesome
Great performence of Michael Shrieve on drums
Michael Shrieve was electric, impossible to stay stopped with this sound!
Truly a diamond... Santana at his raw peak with his super band!!!!!!!!! Shrieve, bass the percussionists and everyone all in sync... AWESOME, A GEM!!!!
This version is A LOT better than the one at Woodstock!
Hands Down!
For sure...But their haircuts were a lot better at woodstock!! LOL
Santana always allowed others in his band to show their talent !
Ultimate live performance- nothing can match it today. First seen them at Diamond Head Festival Hawaii 1969.
theres nothing better in this world than shrieve's solo right as it ends leading up to the main melody
Carlos Santana. One of the greatest rock guitarists of all time. And Michael Shrieve, the greatest drummer.
EPIC
Knowing the iconic Woodstock story, this is what can happen when everyone's head is in the game. Many younger people don't understand.
Sweet Jesus - this is the best video I've ever seen of them (Woodstock was inferior). 1970!!!!! I was in the 9th grade. This is the version I seen in concert and really turned me on to this song!!!!!!
Michael Shrieve on drums - YES!!!!!
Magnificos músicos. Son toda una banda. Es un deleite escucharlos. ¡Bien por la Santana Band!
gotta love this version, so awesome!!! Everything came together percussion, organ, guitar great sound
If you were sitting down while watching this live, you have no soul!!!!!
Robert if you were standing up and not moving to this you had no soul. Probably not much of a pulse either.
Now This Is A Sound Garden
Even better than Woodstock! Michael Sherieve is amazing!
You can say that again!
Nope how can you compare it to Woodstock how ????!
Love!! Back when concerts didn't need light shows and dancers. Lol Real talent.
Holy Molly!!!!!! Talk about musicianship!
Santana Band so powerful during these times it's a wonder the stage didn't explode along with the audience's heads. 👍🙏👍🙏
Bravo Chepito, eres cojo-nudo.

4:16. Get ready for 2 minutes and 40 seconds (I know, I counted) of the most awesome drum solo you'll ever hear.
+C.J. Walfredo Reyes tambien tiene lo suyo..

There are some good bands today but I listen to this and say WTF? This brings me to tears. Good ones...
GOD I LOVE MUSIC, ESPECIALLY FROM THE DAYS OF MY YOUTH THE 60's & 70's..... SO GLAD TO HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCED SUCH GREAT MUSIC ALL ALONG THE PATH
Actually, this toe-tapping number was released as the last track on their first album "Santana" released in August, 1969.
Debra, we are all still young ;)
Randall Maull Yes.... Randall..... silly me..... how could I think anything else..... you are so correct. Thanks for the gentle reminder. Much Love to you and your's :)

Hammond B3 all day!!!
great find on valentines day so im sending this one as they cook some numbers on those congas shieve needs a dimension all to himself
They can't do nothing like this today even if their lives depend on it
Incredible drumming. This could be considered by some to be even better than the performance at Woodstock, which was marred by microphone feedback.
From the ones I talked to in my taxi, like Greg Rolie,it was a sweat session
Off the hook!

This 13 minute live version makes the 6 and a half minute long studio version look positively tame.

Any chance you have the same qualityTull show uncut from tanglewood with no counter? All of the ones I have found on here arn't to good sound wise.
@ Santana - Tanglewood 1970 - Soul Sacrifice
… to sacrifice a soul
santana was a just a blues player until Chepito introduce AFRICA into the set...
Robert, thats Bill Graham.
quien es el tipo de las maracas ? uno de los mejores instrumentales qué he escuchado ¡¡
Can you upload the whole show uncut. You have better quality than the Graham web sight. Please, please, please put up the rest. This is rare quality early Santana at their best.
