Remember to be gentle with yourself. Proper position is quite important, with toes slighty pointing out, it makes a difference. Hula looks easy but as you just realized, it takes a lot of strenght because the movements are tiny and gentle which means an extreme control of the mind and the body. I thankfully went to a school that taught hawaiian history on the mainland for a little and I go to PIFA (pacific islander festival association) but I was always jealous all nā wāhine got to learn hula and I didn't. I would watch and practice the moves myself. Ever since my tutu passed I want to relearn hawaiin and Learn Hula to re connect with my Kapuna. Thank you so much for this video
Growing up my son wanted to hula with my haumana and his sisters, I made a class for little boys and he performed solo on stage. He was sooo happy! He is now about to turn 18 years old. Dance all that you want, it is good for your body, your mind and your soul. Much love to you 💜💜💜

Watching this video reminds me of my auntie who taught HULA because in HAWAII they actually have contests to see who is the best in the state and when it comes to high school usually Kamehameha usually wins and you have to prove that you have HAWAIIAN BLOOD, as my 2 nieces do and both of them are in the medical field, 1 is a nurse Rn,and the other one is a research doctor and both of them graduated 1st in there class 4.0 GPA and there mother was a teacher and my brother is a customs officer at the airport Hnl

It is called ipu heke. It is made of two calabash gourds. You can buy one from my friend on facebook, you can find him as: ipu farm, his name is Kalim. Maybe you can find videos on youtube. This instrument is sacred to Hawaiian culture & it is only used and taught to kumu hula & to very advanced dancers and chanters. I will make a video on it explaining all basics about ipu heke.
