      what if you are in the blind spot of a vehicle. They will hear a Harley. Blind spots tend to be where cars run into motorcycles, especially in traffic.

      take for instance traffic where you cant evade an idiot driver or in Cali where lane splitting is legal and cars may change lanes and run into you. Skill will most undoubtedly not save you from crashing just like a car pulling out in front of you and you didn't see it coming. Skill cant save you forever.

      The real answer is that a lot of motorcycles, Harley or otherwise, are modified to put on louder exhausts. It's the first thing a lot of people do with their bikes, supposedly for performance benefits.
      Realistically, it's not a huge difference, and it hurts the hobby as a whole by pissing off the public at large and reinforcing the stigma against motorcycles.

    Those statistics about motorcycle accidents are misleading because they do not account for demographics. The vast majority of those accidents in which the biker was responsible involved sport bikes, NOT Harleys or Harley style bikes. It's not that Harleys or Harley style bikes are safer, it's that dangerous riders are attracted to faster, more agile sport bikes. These sport bikes tend to have more and smaller cylinder, leading to higher pitch, lower volume exhaust notes, as opposed to V-Twin bikes which have longer, thicker cylinders, resulting in lower pitch, louder volume exhaust.
    What's more, you out right omitted non-fatal accidents, which are far FAR more common. Out of non fatal accidents involving more than one vehicle, the vast majority of the accidents are caused by the driver of the vehicle with 4 or more wheels not paying attention properly, either because they're on their celphone or they're just glancing instead of looking and thus not noticing the oncoming motorcycle before turning in front of them.
    Please don't try to report on motorcycles anymore, since 5 minutes of google searching doesn't really suffice as a substitute for knowing what you're talking about.

    • @JasonWMorningwood
      @JasonWMorningwood 7 років тому +4

      I agree with you, but to be the devils advocate, loud pipes saving lives kinda is only applicable to preventing fatal accidents.
      To be fair, loud pipes save limbs doesn't have the same ring to it though

      @BerryTheBnnuy 7 років тому +5

      Jason W. Morningwood
      Well, I think loud pipes DO save lives, but only on the interstate... Basically, cars are a LOT less likely to change lanes into you if you have loud pipes. It's hard to hear loud pipes coming from within a car, but once they're beside you, you can't miss'em.

      There are stats about demographics and bike types, motorcycles deaths are roughly 50/50 between cruisers/sport bikes..
      www.iihs.org/iihs/topics/t/motorcycles/fatalityfacts/motorcycles

    • @BerryTheBnnuy
      @BerryTheBnnuy 7 років тому +4

      Felipe Gutierrez
      I can't find that statistic anywhere on the page you linked. It doesn't even make sense that the statistic you cited would even be there considering it's the IIHS, and they published the following, which contradicts it.
      www.iihs.org/iihs/news/desktopnews/popularity-of-high-performance-motorcycles-helps-push-rider-deaths-to-near-record-high
      What we see here is 22.6 fatal accidents per 10k miles among supersport bikes, 10.8 fatal accidents per 10k miles among sport and naked sport bikes, and 5.6 fatal accidents per 10k miles for cruisers.
      The reason for per 10,000 miles is to normalize the numbers. If we look at total accidents on this style of bike and total accidents on that style of bike, we aren't accounting for ownership rates, or even the rate at which people ride them... For instance, someone who owns a motorcycle, keeps it registered, and never rides it will never generate a fatality statistic for that style of bike. So the only way to normalize the numbers to get a real picture of which bikes are more likely to generate a fatality if you ride them is through the 10k mile figure.
      However, even then the number is not entirely fair because it doesn't take into account things like the rider taking risky behavior. Though let's be honest here, while nobody buys a motorcycle out of safety mindedness, nobody buys a sport bike expecting to ride it at the speed limit, or ride it in a safe manner.
      The simple fact of the matter is that sport bikes attract inexperienced riders.
      Let's look at Question number 9 on: www.iihs.org/iihs/topics/t/motorcycles/qanda
      _9. Do rider characteristics differ by motorcycle class?_
      _Yes. Different types of motorcycles tend to attract riders in different age groups. Riders of supersport, sport and unclad sport bikes tend to be younger than riders who choose standard, cruiser and touring motorcycles._
      _Fatally injured rider characteristics are similar within each motorcycle class, but differ across classes. Speeding and driver error are bigger factors in fatal crashes of supersport, sport and unclad sport bikes compared with other classes of motorcycles. Speeding was a factor in 56 percent of supersport riders' fatal crashes in 2014 and 48 percent of the fatal crashes of sport and unclad sport riders. Speeding was a factor in 25 percent of fatal crashes among riders of cruisers and standards, 26 percent of riders of sport-touring motorcycles and 22 percent of riders of touring motorcycles. Sport and supersport riders were more likely to have been wearing helmets than many other motorcyclists. Seventy-seven percent of supersport riders who died in crashes in 2014 wore helmets, compared with 54 percent of cruiser and standard riders._
      So not only do we see that young, inexperienced riders are attracted to sport and supersport bikes, but that you're far more likely to die on one in an accident, even while wearing a helmet compared to cruisers.
      This of course does not mean that the bike style itself is explicitly responsible. Rider inexperience likely plays a huge role in that.
      However, what likely also plays a huge role is the fact that on a sport or supersport, in the event that you hit something, you're effectively launched head first, which is more likely to result in a broken neck. Also, such bikes are more likely to be breaking the speed limit during an accident, as the riders are more likely to be major risk takers. So there are multiple factors at play, and while probably the biggest part of it is rider experience, it's not the only thing that makes sport and supersport bikes more dangerous.
      In conclusion, if you're going to link to a source in support of your argument, make sure that source actually agrees with your argument.
      Or in short... learn to read.

    What makes a HD motorcycle so loud? The rider!
    I had a neighbor who waited months for a custom-colored HD Ultra Glide to be delivered to him. He paid a huge sum of money to acquire this new bike, and the next weekend I was startled to hear a loud banging noise coming from the street. I looked out to find him hammering a long metal shaft into his exhaust, to knock out the baffles! This kept the EPA stamp intact, but made the noise loud enough to set off the car alarms as he rode down the street... Loud pipes annoy neighbors... And yes - I ride too.

    You're better off adopting changes in your lighting. Trains are much louder than motorcycles, and the railroad industry solved most of their accident problems by the introduction of the mars light, not by making the train louder. I'm still using a 4 blink per second device in my headlight during daytime riding. It automatically triggers the human mind's attention. With no additional noise, and not riding like an idiot, no cop has stopped me in last 30 years. I've been riding now for 40 years.

  • @EnsignSuder
    @EnsignSuder 7 років тому +26

    I ride a Harley in a club with over 300 members. No one I ride with rides with straight pipes. So I call bullshit on that one. Air-cooled, radial engines will be naturally louder than a similar sized water-cooled engine. The Harley engine is from a time when America kicked ass and made things happen.
    That said. the majority switch out their mufflers for aftermarket brands like Reinhardt or similar. Those mufflers are louder than the OEM but are still under EPA noise limits, and most that switch do it for the same reason people swapped mufflers on muscle cars: they do it first because the bike breathes better, and better breathing equates to more efficiency, and second, they like the low base note that most aftermarket add. Almost everyone I know that has swapped out the pipes also changed the cams and air cleaner and had their bike dyno-tuned for maximum performance. Not noise. So they aren't a bunch of dweebs that don't understand what they're doing. With over 80,000 miles on my Roadking, I can attest that anyone that is depending on their mufflers to save their lives are idiots. Most of the exhaust noise is behind you. (Although it is pretty fucking awesome to hear 20 or 30 Harleys rolling down a road. Gives me chills just thinking about it.) Training, gear, and situational awareness saves lives. I have to laugh at guys that use the loud pipe argument, but then don't wear a helmet, as if the noise is some kind of protective force field. They probably text while driving, too.
    A Harley touring model that hasn't been re-piped is actually pretty quiet. Several police forces use them, and don't have any issue at all with noise, so I'm gonna call bullshit on you initial point as well.
    Finally, I don't disagree that there are some out there that run with obnoxiously loud exhausts. Those people are the type that don't respond well to lame-assed authoritarian fucksticks telling them what to do. Threaten with noise restrictions and they get louder. Kind of like the Original American spirit, you know, before the pussies took over.

      Gerald Frieberg Let me ask you this: if I cut two cylinders out of an 8 cylinder (yes, they existed) radial engine, what air cooled twin cylinder motorcyle engine awould it be very similar to? Hmm? What would be the major similarities of that and a Harley V twin? What would the cylinder angle be? Or, if I were to add, say, 6 more cylinders around the crankshaft of my v-twin, what type engine would it closely resemble? Maybe some practice in creative, lateral thinking would help you before you post next time.

Defensive driving coupled with driving sensibly yourself is necessary. And I am guilty of having "loud pipes" on one of my two bikes, a Harley that had those pipes on it when I bought it. Solution is that I do not hammer the throttle or do high rpm's around people. Loud pipes need help to be loud. If people would just respect one another, a lot of these problems would go away. With the recent advent of portable information devices the attention span of a growing number of drivers is increasingly diminishing. Since I've nearly been clipped more than once by distracted drivers that didn't see or hear me right next to their door I've decided to upgrade the sound of my bike to hopefully reduce such instances. If you're soooo worried about being safe on the road here's a few suggestions that will enable you to be seen as much as is practicable given the various circumstances vehicle drivers find themselves in. 1. Slow down. 2. Headlight on and wear a flouro vest. 3.Don't speed between cars like an idiot. In fact don't speed at all if you're worried about an accident. 4. Allow for drivers not to see you at all times. I rode for a few years so I know they sometimes cannot see you even when their head turns to look in your direction (Windscreen side pillars). Has happened to me but I "worked it out" and avoided an accident. So, Mots, how about you back off on the noise angle ("An empty drum makes the most noise". As someone who has been rear ended while on a motorcycle and would've been killed had I not been wearing a helmet (seriously, my helmet was destroyed, split near in half. I don't even wanna think what would've happened to my head) I feel uniquely qualified to comment on this.
    My bike didn't have extraordinarily loud pipes, but they were loud enough that I got the occasional complaint (they were stock on a Suzuki cruiser, so any replacement would have probably been louder). The guy who hit me had to have heard them, but he still hit me. People who don't watch for motorcycles aren't going to register hearing one till it's too late. That's why seasoned riders are always looking out for the idiot who's about to kill them (and there's always at least one). I don't believe that loud pipes save lives. Nor do I relish the thought of more hearing loss than I've already inflicted upon myself as a less-than-wise young man.

      Completely agree. Rather than loud pipes (which have the added problem of annoying the neighbors if I decide to set off in the early hours for an all day ride out), I have fitted an air horn. Not measured it yet, but pretty sure it is in excess of 100dB, and will always gain more attention than my engine.
      With that said, I ride like I have a target on my helmet, and everybody else is driving with their eyes closed. The number of cagers I have avoided over the past 15 odd years is disappointingly high. On the other hand, life on a bike undoubtedly makes for a better car/truck driver...

    I've owned 16 motorcycles, the last three have been Harleys and I leave the stock mufflers on. When others run without mufflers their Harleys may sound fast, but the truth is they gain very little power by running without mufflers. Some say loud pipes save lives. I laugh at this because even when others run their Harleys without mufflers you can barely hear them coming. It is after they pass you when you hear all the noise. I guess if they were to run backwards down the highway it might frighten deer off the roadway.

    5:10 I'm not sure where you got those statistics, they might be true, however, that's only accounting for fatal crash statistics, where as if you look at the statistics for all motorcycle crashes, the car was at fault 80% of the time. And, as you might have guessed it, the number one reason for motorcycle crashes is that the car claimed to not have seen the motorcyclist. So yes anything that can draw attention to the motorcyclist, whether it be loud pipes, turning brights on, or having high vis gear, can and will reduce the chances of an accident. Loud pipes save lives.

      puncheex2
      I do realize what Simon had stated, very clearly, but having read the report as both you and Simon should have done, I can't grasp how he can make the claims that motorcyclists are at fault the majority of the time.
      To start off with, the report in no way ever claims who is responsible, but does go into related driving factors, and who of the two vehicles struck the other vehicle. At 5:33 Simon claims that 75% of all motorcyclists are deemed responsible, and having gone over the report I can only conclude he was referring to this statement from the report,
      In two-vehicle crashes between a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle in 2005, in 1,334
      (74%) of the crashes the motorcycle was recorded as the striking vehicle, compared to
      470 (26%) of crashes where the passenger vehicle was recorded as the striking vehicle.
      This indicates that of the two-vehicle crash between a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle,
      nearly three-fourths of the time the motorcycle is the striking vehicle.
      On page 21 figure 3.2.6,
      However, literally right below that paragraph the report makes this statement:
      Note: “Striking” in the above paragraph does not imply fault but only describes the relationship
      of the vehicles in the crash as recorded by police.
      Now if you or Simon actually read the report, maybe you guys would have been I little more careful to make claims and done more homework before making a statement. Simon attempts to make this claim citing only one source that relates to his claim being the NHTSA 2007 report, all other sources are either; noise ordinance laws, which do not apply to the claim that motorcyclists are more at fault in a crash, or news and blog articles, which have no scientific proof of the claim, and are more or less just people complaining that everyone is too loud. This article in his sources, www.noiseoff.org/motorcycles.php , was definitely interesting in that in the summary section, paragraph 7, is worded a lot like the statement Simon made.
      Now let's dig a little deeper into this report shall we. On page 29-30 section 3.2.16 Driver-Related Factors, we have all factors that were a contributing factor to the crash but does not imply fault, however in this section from the report,
      Failure to yield right of way was a related factor in the crash for 4 percent of the motorcycle operators compared to 35 percent for passenger vehicle drivers in the crash. This indicates that in two-vehicle
      crashes involving a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle, more than one-third of the related
      factors for the passenger vehicle driver were not yielding right-of-way to the motorcycle
      operator.
      we can start making assertions based on the data. One being that, of all the data, the above statement is mainly where the "Loud pipes saves lives" argument comes into play. Being that 1/3 (630 fatalities) of all fatal crashes of motorcyclists with one or more vehicle, passenger vehicles fail to give the right of way to the motorcyclist, being louder and more noticeable would have been a contributing factor of whether or not the crash could have been avoided. So, going out with loud pipes (or anything that draws attention to yourself) potentially reduces 1/3 of your risk of dying. So I still fail to see why your argument that loud pipes does not saves lives is even a valid claim.
      "would your final statement there make a difference if the loud pipes weren't also considered a defiant gesture to the civilization the biker lives in?", you ask, the simple answer is no, it makes no difference to me since it does not apply to my reasoning or morals on this topic. However, I will say that asking me this is equivalent to asking someone who owns a gun, "Does your thoughts on owning a gun change knowing criminals own guns too?" and makes no sense in the context. Finally, I have no idea as to why you worded that statement as you did, when you could have just said rebel or degenerate, instead of wording it in such a way as to be cryptic, probably to either a.) assume that the person you are targeting is of lower intelligence than you and want to confuse and trip them up or b.) appear to be of higher intelligence than you are and impress your peers. I assume it's b.) but that's just my opinion, if so, take my advise and next time ACTUALLY READ THE FUCKING REPORT!

  • @bmxriderforlife1234

    i disagree with your conclusion that the motorcyclist is usually at fault more often then not its actually the driver of the car, they forget to check their blind spots and instead of actually looking over their shoulder before pulling out just take a quick look in their side view mirrors then pull out leaving their blind spots unchecked. every accident involving a motorcyclist except one was the fault of the driver in the car, the one time it wasnt the motorcyclist ran a red light. im not saying motorcyclists are perfect many are idiots and cause accidents but alot of the time the motorcyclist was blamed when it was the driver of the car, ive witnessed it myself.

    • @TodayIFoundOut
      @TodayIFoundOut  8 років тому +1

      As a one time regular motorcyclist myself, I can say I've seen all that as well, and don't even necessarily disagree with you here. (It is one of the reasons I don't ride anymore- also I broke my street bike and back then couldn't afford to fix it ;-)) Heck, as someone who used to regularly drive a little Toyota Tercel, I can say people don't see that car either. Can't tell you how many times I've nearly been run off the road driving that from people who just don't see me at all. It's almost like driving a motorcycle. I don't have that same problem in bigger cars. However, when reporting stuff on this channel, we have to rely on what (valid) studies say, regardless of our own personal opinions- everything must be backed by hard data. In this case, the data we have available says what we said in the video about the accidents.
      As a corollary, I've also seen studies clearly showing big rig drivers generally being at fault in accidents. But as someone whose father drove truck for a living for many, many years (thankfully never getting in an accident in like 1-2 million miles), I can say that there were an amazing number of times people would dart in front of him in traffic and slam on their brakes.... He was leaving that gap for a reason, of course. But cars in traffic don't ever seem to grasp that.
      Had he hit them (close call countless times owing to simple physics of how long it takes a fully loaded rig to stop, even at lower speeds), it would have been considered his fault for rear ending them. It would not have been his fault.
      Lots of examples like this. But even so, were I to do a video touching on such a subject, I'd have to go with the hard data available or not mention it at all. And this isn't a bad thing. There are an amazing number of times where our anecdotal experiences lead us to making incorrect assumptions and conclusions. My dad was a great driver; many other truck drivers may not be or for various other reasons may be causing a lot of accidents.
      Similarly, a lot of you may be great motorcycle drivers and are only thinking of the experiences where drivers don't see you and almost cause an accident (or do). But there are also an awful lot of motorcyclists who drive extremely recklessly out there. (I've seen many of those as well.) Just because it's not you, doesn't mean it's not happening. Or maybe it it's not, and the DOT is incorrect in their study. But the way to argue that is not to point out anecdotal accounts, but rather to find the flaw in their methodology and expose it. Are they counting some accidents as the motorcyclists' fault, like the motorcyclist being run out of their lane by one car, ultimately causing them to hit another car or the like? What percentages are accidents like this, if they are indeed happening and being counted against the motorcyclist? Etc.

      Today I Found Out i agree with you, it just bothers me when ive seen really safe riders die because of cars and its labeled their fault, when it really wasnt, i wish i could do the research to prove if the studies are right. i have a feeling the numbers are alot lower then the say, i can also say the same about car accidents involving cyclists, however i did not mean to offend you and i hope i did not. i just happen to feel that there is a flaw with these studies, im not sure if they are just flawed by a margin but it still swings that way anyways or if it truly is more often the fault of the car. ultimately since i cant prove it i cant really debate off any hard data, i do understand where you're coming from you do have to present the facts as they are and you cant let a person bias get in the way. i apologize
      my uncle drives a harley the good thing is though he is a very large man, hes about 6 foot 5 and built like a slightly over weight body builder or a wrestler hes huge and its kinda hard to not notice him but hes also been riding for like 40 years so he knows how to avoid most issues. his bike isnt very loud either it does sound rather lovely though has a nice deep sound he put custom pipes on but they arent any louder then the stock ones i find. my other uncle on the other hand is a really small guy and he used to have a small car, he upgraded to an suv for his next vehicle, but with his car ither people in cars still didnt notice him, i cant remember exactly what is was but it wasnt the tiniest car, i was always kind of surprised by how many times it seemed like people just didnt notice him.
      i also understand traffic laws themselves can be flawed in many ways, but i personally think every car should have a dash cam so when accidents do happen footage can be examined, any on board computers data can be examined and the person truely at fault should be held accountable. i dont think its gonna happen any time soon but i wish it would.
      i agree there are many very dangerous motorcyclists on the road, and they give a bad name to all the good ones. i understand there are terrible drivers from all walks regardless if you drive a motorcyclist a vespa a car an suv a truck whatever it is. even a cyclist can be a danger, ive seen a cyclist basically cause a head on crash as the first person swerved to avoid him darting out and then him swerving into someone elses way as they try to get out of the way the two cars hit head on thankfully they were going fairly slow by the time they connected and no injuries resulted but the person responsible rode away.
      i do have to disagree with you that harley's are loud as they arent very loud stock, and any bike can be made loud any vehicle can be made loud shit my uncle knew a guy with a fucking corvette 454 in i believe a firebird and it apparently used to set off alarms shake cars, couldnt hear the person beside you in the passenger seat talking. ive also seen an electric car in my city with false exhaust system used speakers and such to make the car sound like another car. There are also sport bikes that are way louder, they sometimes sound quieter as they have a higher pitched sound more whiney vs the throaty sound of many harleys. ive tested this, my uncles bike versus my friends sports bike the sports bike is louder decibel wise but a few of those present at the time agreed my uncles sounded louder. neither bike is all that loud compared to the honda or yamaha(not sure what it is other then a cruiser) a street over or the guy up the street with his harley even the triumph down the street is louder then my uncles bike. i can assure you that 2 of those bikes do have custom pipes not sure about the triumph though, but my uncles bike also has custom pipes the two guys who have fully custom harleys with crazy ass paint and literally aftermarket everything neither of their bikes is all that loud, lol i just realized theres alot of people in my childhood neighborhood with motorcycles.

      Single individual crashes have nothing to do with sound levels . Use Your horn switch they say. as You move to locate the cleanest switch on Your handle bars, it's over. Since My hand is already on the throttle a good snap of the wrist will in fact be a much quicker response than fumbling towards the switch as Your grip tightens and you may advert your eyes to locate the horn switch, which most riders have not acquired muscle memory for. The Crack from loud pipes will Penetrate the cabin of a tank as the driver may be distracted as They decide to take your lane. The Stock pipes Harley sales sounds like a sewing machine on purpose. After a buyer has his first near death experience as he is jamming the hor repeatedly while losing blacktop from a suv immediately returns to Harley to check the prices on a newer louder exhaust system. Why else is a whole wall dedicated to pipes? They know. Loud pipes do save lives in certain situations, but no one calls the police and says, "I was almost hit! But My loud pipes got their attention!" What you do get is , "I didn't See Him" and " I didn't hear them". I'll take the ticket for the seconds of discomfort to these poor souls ears so I can come home to loved ones.

    They are loud because unlike a car, they dont have headers and mid pipes and catalytic converters. They are usually installed with mufflers and baffles, but that's pretty much it. The sound of the engine differs from the size and shape of the engine and also an offset in pitch by the number of pistons. 2 piston engines which Harley's and most Street bikes use have a hard, abrasive, low tone sound. While sports bikes with 4 pistons have a higher pitch and consecutive sound.
    Factory stock exhausts will be equipped to have the quietest efficiency, but if your a true rider you will cut those restrictions off because LOUD PIPES SAVES LIVES. In a common motorcycle accident, louder bikes will be more noticeable and easier to avoid, rather than a quiet mosquito that would be a serious hazard on the road. Removing mufflers will also increase the horse power because the amount of air being intaked by a car/motorcycle needs to come out of the engine just as much, therefore this video is a bust. Harley's are fine just the way they are.

If I had simply applied my brakes I would have been a hood ornament on her car. I applied my brakes and turned the bike sideways, I stopped with my leg up against her driver side door. To add insult to injury she rolls down her window and starts yelling at me to watch where I'n going and such. Luckily I had traffic behind me who saw it all and started to yell at the women. The lesson here is don't assume a car driver see's you, sometimes they can be looking right at you but the bike just doesn't register.

    Loud pipes risk rights, they don't save lives. The loud pipes argument falls apart when you realize that 95% of the danger is in front of you, with loud pipes 98% of the noise is behind you, the person who is about to turn left in front of you has their windows up and radio on and will never hear your loud pipes, they don't hear them till you go by. Most of the single vehicle accidents are caused by drinking and riding, Harley riders tend to like to drink and ride, that will get you killed. They like loud pipes to make their low powered Harleys sound more powerful, while they are actually among the lower powered bikes, the sport bikes are so much more powerful there is no comparison, so they buy loud pipes to make them sound more powerful, but as mentioned in the video many poorly designed exhaust systems often cause power to be lost rather than gained. I was once told I couldn't stay at a motel because of the loud bike I rode in on, except I rode in on a BMW that was no louder than a car, but the owner wouldn't even consider letting a bike stay there because of too many bad experiences with loud Harleys. Loud pipes risk rights, those loud Harleys cause areas to be closed off to motorcycles, but they close them to all motorcycles, not just the noisy Harleys that caused all the complaints.

    Of course this English guy who has never rode a motorcycle in his life let alone left his house is analyzing this subject. The stock exhausts are quiet, but extremely restrictive. Swapping out for a less restrictive exhaust improves both the efficiency and performance of the engine. Though loud does not = fast, the higher performing exhausts do tend to be louder than stock. People who rev their bikes for no reason at all at stop lights are assholes. Harley riders as well as sport bike riders are both equally guilty of doing so.

      This particular one was co-researched and co-written by two Americans, one of which (me) has owned many bikes in his lifetime (one street and three dirt; father and one brother have also owned several different bikes from cruisers to jumpers). I do know Simon absolutely rocks an airwheel these days, if that helps. ;-)
      I actually do know a lot about, and have significant experience with, bikes, contrary to commenters' opinion here. :-) But in the end, we are experts at research, so it wouldn't have made a difference had I started out knowing zero about them. In fact, sometimes thinking you know a lot about something is a hindrance when researching/writing these types of things. Often I might make assumptions that turn out to be false, but weren't caught before publication because I thought I knew what I was talking about already. (And as I'm the head editor, no one is there to double check my stuff, unlike other people's work on TodayIFoundOut.) ;-) One of the pro-tips I give every new researcher for TIFO is actually "Don't assume you know anything about the topic! Research every little detail."
      It's actually one of the reasons we don't do too many medical topics. Doctors I've hired in the past are the worst at accuracy, because they answer the questions off the top of their heads from their considerable expertise... without actually looking in great detail into the current state of research in a given topic. It's a major problem. :-) The best I've ever found was a paramedic, as he had the skills to be able to interpret medical studies well and correctly (unlike what most media outlets do), but lacked the existing knowledge to think he knew everything already. He was amazing. :-)
      "People who rev their bikes for no reason at all at stop lights are assholes. " Couldn't agree more. :-)

      vibration is inherent to the V twin design. Stock Harley's sound like sewing machines. A sport bike with a shorty pipe is just as loud. As for efficiency... I own both a 1200cc Harley Sportster and a 600cc Yamaha R6. The Harley consistently gets 60 mpg being ripped on, while my R6 is lucky to get 40 mpg riding conservatively. Better fuel economy at twice the displacement... not exactly inefficient...

    So you try to discount the statement that loud pipes save lives by showing the statistic that most fatal motorcycle accidents are the fault of the motorcyclist. Honestly your citation of that statistic PROVES that loud pipes save lives since the majority of motorcycles in the United States have loud pipes.
    I myself have been nearly hit many times on my motorcycle but the driver of the car hears me (I rev the engine a bit at these inattentive drivers) and they stop or swerve away.

    anyone who rides or know someone who rides knows how dangerous it is because most drivers dont pay enough attention. i've had people pull onto the road right in front of me because they're not looking for bikes. the noise makes sure people know we're there. a lot of riders are just being obnoxious motor heads who want attention, but the noise DOES help protect against distracted drivers

    • @RyanMcIntyre
      @RyanMcIntyre 8 років тому +8

      +SirGeeeO NNNNNnoo it doesn't, unless you can cite specific studies or results of studies that show motorcycle volume to be a positive attention getter, you're only spreading misinformation and rumor. Today's cars are soundproofed so well and the drivers so distracted/oblivious that any amount of sound coming from a bike is wasted energy. That's why ANY studies done in this area agree that obnoxious and ugly bright yellow gear is the only thing to help a biker out. Loud pipes are for one thing: the motorcycle owner.

    • @SirGeeeO
      @SirGeeeO 8 років тому +4

      Ryan McIntyre cars aren't sound proof and if the noise doesnt help then i guess those police and ambulance sirens are useless. • @RyanMcIntyre
      @RyanMcIntyre 8 років тому +5

      True enough about bikes. And when it comes to sirens, you're speaking my language - I've been in the field since 1999, and it's a well-understood fact (documentation for studies confirming this have been in my manuals since college, not sure if I could find it online) that sirens are basically useless. Glad you mentioned that! At 45mph/66fps you lose enough sound energy to decay and absorption and have compressed the leading soundwave enough that you essentially "outrun" your siren. Those same studies also found that 50 feet and farther away, even a 180dbA siren is under 70 in the cab of a modern auto (modern in 1999 btw) - that is the speaking volume of a human.
      Summary: the extra noise does not help, motion and bright colors do. I'm not parroting opinion, only facts from people much smarter than I.

    Need to do more research. Blaming Harley is ridiculous. For that matter, blaming motorcycles is ridiculous. Your lawnmower likely makes more noise than a Harley or any other stock motorcycle. Any owner of any gas powered engine can make them obscenely loud by removing stock baffling. That goes for cars, trucks, boats or anything else.
    The fact that Harley owners seem to be more obnoxious than most and run baffle free pipes and blip their throttles a lot to garner attention does not make Harley responsible for the situation. If Harley didn't make motorcycles at all, those same people would find some other obnoxious means of drawing attention to themselves. Count on it.

    • @TodayIFoundOut
      @TodayIFoundOut  8 років тому +4

      Nobody was blaming Harley itself. In fact, we explicitly mentioned the real problem was the owners' modifications "leading to the real problem- many who buy Harleys are not satisfied with the legally regulated stock noise of the engine and instead choose to swap out the existing exhaust systems for straight pipes that don’t really mute the engine noise at all. This results in sound that can exceed 100 decibels when revved up." And of course, the quote mentioned in the video from the COO of Harley-Davidson imploring Harley owners to stop doing this and Harley taking "steps to eliminate the modifications by no longer shipping racing exhaust systems that can work on street models to dealers." :-)

If keeping yourself safe is so important then why do so many of you ride without helmets? Why don't you wear motorcycle specific clothing with armor? Why all the black clothing and helmets (if you even wear one). Would it kill you to wear something reflective and bright? All the time I see Harley riders at bars. I don't think you're drinking iced tea or soda, then you ride to the next bar. I think conforming to your group, feeling bad-ass and attracting attention are the main motivation. After a month in the traffic and nearly being swiped several times I could see why people modify there exhaust. Not just for more power but to give themselves every chance of surviving on the roads and highways. Sometimes motorist can't see us as we may be in there blind spot and this is when an accident can happen. Yes I agree some Harleys are just too loud and I think these ones makes it hard for us all. Personally, I'm more interested in how even a single harley makes it past any noise restrictions. In Australia The Ducati 888 actually required a new rear sprocket to pass the 60Kph driveby test. A bike by far quieter at any speed than a harley at stock.
    I will also point out that most accidents blamed on bikes are the result of "He came out of nowhere." A phenomenon well known amongst even casual bikers where a driver sees them (In some cases even looks them in the eye) and the brain writes them off as not a hazard as they're smaller and less able to do damage, effectively blanking them from the brain. If you take this into consideration most bikers will tell you that any accident they were involved in was caused by a car that did not take any notice of them, and the bike had to avoid allowing the car to get off scott free.thus not being included in the survey. Bikers are aware that an accident, or moment of inattention can end their life, and while there are still accidents caused by bikers pushing to hard, quite often while having fun. I suspect that your statistics on biker caused accidents are "massaged" to fit a political narrative. Bikers are regarded as less important in many political narratives, and thus the statistics sought by many organizations that would seek such surveys, the questions asked and statistics sought regularly avoid asking the questions of who is actually at fault.

So, Mr. motorcycle rider, how about you SLOW DOWN, STOP ACTING LIKE YOU OWN THE ROAD and take a more realistic and safe approach to motorcycling? Always wear a bright coloured safety vest, always have your headlight on, never weave in and out of cars, never speed (THIS is mandatory if you want to be "safe" on the roads.) and ALWAYS be alert that drivers may not see you because of circumstances BEYOND their control. Or be smart and drive a car. I don't believe the calculations about decibels are correct. Yes, the scale is logarithmic, but in base 2. That means that an increase of one bel, or 10 dB, is doubling of sound. Therefore, 80 dB is *twice* as loud as 70 dB, not ten times as loud.

    • @depthsounderdave
      @depthsounderdave 6 років тому +25

      Bob Bell
      You are both incorrect. Decibels are calculated on logarithms to the base 10. He is correct that an increase of 10 decibels is 10 times the acoustic power, but then immediately afterwards he errs by saying that it is also 10 times the sound pressure level. Power is 10*log10(x), pressure is 20*log10(x).

    • @fvcostanzo
      @fvcostanzo 6 років тому +4

      That is incorrect. It depends if you are measuring sound pressure or sound intensity. One is 10log(X/R), the other is 20log(X/R), where X is the measured quantity, and R is the reference (all dB measurements are ratios). 10log(X/R) implies a doubling every 3 dB. 20log(X/R) implies a doubling every 6 dB (approximately). For example, if you are talking sound power (10log calc), 83 dB is twice as loud as 80 dB... and all of this depends on distance. Standard measurement distance is one meter (metric) or 3 feet (English). Sound pressure for an omnidirectional source falls off as a spherical function (10log of the distance), so the further away you are, the lower the sound pressure. BTW, if you want to check the math, the reference pressure for air is 1 Pa.

    I own a motorcycle repair shop. The metric sport bike riders with annoying loud, fart can mufflers outnumber my harley riders 4 to one. They are incessant throttle rappers. And do not understand proper tuning and exhaust scavenging. Your video is one sided, and slanted.... somewhat offensive and laced with incomplete thoughts and poor English.

      Engineers only design things that are to be thrown away, not repaired.
      This means that people that fix what an engineer has been paid to make impossible to repair has to be smarter than the engineer.
      Leave your engineering skills for the rich, ignorant bastards that can afford to replace investments rather than repairing them.
